A U.S. District Court judge in Los Angeles rejected a bid by California Attorney General Xavier Becerra to block the purchase of two failing Verity Health System hospitals by Santa Clara County. The Feb. 22 ruling cleared the way for the county to close
its $235 million purchase of Saint Louise Regional Hospital in Gilroy and O’Connor Hospital in San Jose, plus the DePaul Urgent Care Center in Morgan Hill this week. County officials said they expected to close the deal Feb. 28, when a courtapproved purchase agreement expired, and take ownership on March 1. “We are pleased that the district court denied the stay, which will allow the county to complete its purchase of the hospitals,” said County Counsel James Williams. “We will now

Calm before the storm PARK LOVERS WAIT A FEW MORE DAYS FOR DRY WEATHER Michael Moore Editor
Since the end of this month’s first series of rainstorms that drenched the Bay Area, overflowed creeks and filled South County reservoirs beyond capacity, residents and visitors are flocking to parks and outdoor areas in Morgan Hill to enjoy the dry weather while they can.
Robert Eliason
COLD BUT DRY Bundled-up twins Caspian and Crimson-Kate Adams, 6, and their mother Shalea took advantage of the dry,
cool weather last Sunday, Feb. 17, to climb and play at the Railroad Park on Depot Street in downtown Morgan Hill.
Morgan Hill is host to a number of parks and playgrounds in the city’s downtown (Railroad Park, Hilltop Park, etc.) and in neighborhoods throughout town. You might have to wait a little longer for another dry spell, as the National Weather Service predicted high chances of rain Feb. 26-28, with another bout of showers expected this weekend. So far this winter, about 22 inches of rain has fallen on Morgan Hill, according to the Santa Clara Valley Water District’s website.
Teens blame district for sex abuse LAWSUIT: MHUSD TURNED BLIND EYE TO ABUSE BY KEVIN COLE Michael Moore Editor
The families of three teenage girls have filed court documents accusing the Morgan Hill Unified School District of negligence that allowed former drama production contractor Kevin Cole to sexually abuse the plaintiffs at various times in recent years on a local high school campus. The complaint, filed in January in Santa Clara County Superior Court, seeks an unspecified amount of damages from
MHUSD and Cole for “mental, physical and nervous pain and suffering” due to the abuse, and for costs associated with medical and therapeutic treatment of the girls’ injuries, reads the lawsuit filed by attorneys Robert Allard and Lauren Cerri of the Corsiglia McMahon and Allard law firm. Two of the girls’ families are also suing Morgan Hill-based youth theater company South Valley Dance Arts—which hired Cole for a show where some of the alleged abuse occurred—for negligence. Cole, 36, of Newark, was convicted last year of misdemeanor annoying and molesting a child in relation to an incident backstage at an SVDA production of The Nutcracker at Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill in late
2017. During the jury trial, six teenage girls testified that Cole had inappropriately touched and spoken to them during theater instruction or performances over the course of four years. The jury found him guilty in June 2018 of victimizing one of the accusers. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail, and is currently on probation for the criminal conviction, according to court records. He later filed a notice to appeal the conviction, which is currently under consideration by the courts. Cole could not be reached for comment on the recent lawsuit. During the 2017 SVDA production, Cole was accused of touching female performers on intimate body parts, over their clothing, while helping them
change backstage. A parent called Morgan Hill police, who arrested him as he was leaving Sobrato’s theater the night of Dec. 1, 2017. The victim of the crime for which Cole was convicted last year is not among the plaintiffs in the January lawsuit, which is in its initial litigation stages. Two of the plaintiffs are alleging that Cole’s abuse took place during the Nutcracker performance. In a previous unrelated case, the Allard firm in March 2017 secured an $8.25 million settlement from MHUSD on behalf of three young girls who were sexually molested by John Loyd, their fifth-grade teacher at Paradise Valley Elementary School. ➝ Lawsuit, 11

As the weeks have worn on, the fight over the two future hotels in Madrone business park has grown increasingly contentious. Paid signature gatherers, sponsored by the hoteliers, and the paid information disseminators funded by MMP Properties, have clashed outside of local storefronts in recent days, resulting in calls to police. The signature gatherers are asking registered local voters to sign a petition that, if successful, would require the city council to either repeal a Jan. 23 ordinance rezoning a parcel in Madrone Village, or put it to the voters with a ballot referendum. Their opposing information disseminators have been handing out flyers touting the benefits of a developer’s proposal to build two new hotels on the Madrone property— the reason for which the council unanimously approved the rezoning. The developer’s flyer alleges the petition would reduce funding for city services. Brad Krouskup, president and CEO of Toeniskoetter Development, developer of the two-hotel proposal, said this claim comes from the city’s Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) projections. Asit Panwala, whose parents own the Comfort Inn and Suites on Condit Road, has been speaking on behalf of the hoteliers. He said the new hotels will cause a saturation of hotel rooms in the city, driving down room prices and having either no effect or a negative effect on TOT revenue. The clash of ideas has resulted in accusations of dishonesty, ulterior motives and even an element of face-toface conflict as the two sides have competed for audiences outside local shopping centers. Morgan Hill Police Sgt. Bill Norman confirmed officers have been called to
Walmart and Target in recent days for incidents involving the paid signature gatherers and developer’s representatives. “Officers educated both the petitioners and property owners on the law,” Norman told the Times in an email. “No arrests were made.” The city council first unanimously approved plans to amend the usage for the Madrone Business park at a Jan. 23 council meeting. The hoteliers in Morgan Hill have opposed the project from the beginning. The project would begin a Fairfield Inn and Suites an a Hilton Home 2 Suites to the property, which is at the corner of Madrone Parkway and Woodview Avenue. Following council approval, the hoteliers launched a petition campaign to overturn the council’s decision via referendum. The petition would require signatures from 10 percent of Morgan Hill’s registered voters, and must be presented to the council by or before March 8. Madrone Village is the shopping center/business park off of Cochrane Road and Madrone Parkway. It had originally been zoned for a larger commercial space, such as a grocery store, but the council decision added a hotel use to the zoning. Paid signature gatherers have been outside Morgan Hill establishments with the petition for residents to sign. On Feb. 11 the city sent an email to residents about the petition. The email explained the petition process and possible impacts a new hotel could have on transient occupancy tax, or hotel tax, collection. Similar language was then used in flyers circulating from the developer of the hotels and land owner, MMP Properties and Toeniskoetter Development. City Attorney Donald Larkin previously told the Times that the reason for the email was to set the record straight after misinformation had been spread by the paid signature gatherers. While the signature gatherers are only circulating a petition with the
ordinance attached, the city and developer allege that the signature gatherers have been verbalizing false or misleading statements in an effort to get the signatures. The city’s email said that if the council’s decision is overturned there would be a loss of revenue for the city. The email warned that the petition’s success “would cause the city to lose approximately $800,000 annually in projected general fund revenues from (TOT), which provide funding for police, fire, parks and road maintenance,” wrote Maureen Tobin, Communication and Engagement Officer for Morgan Hill. “A special election, if necessary, would also impact the city’s general fund at a cost from $200,000 (to) $400,000.” Following the city’s addition of the La Quinta hotel in 2016, the city’s TOT revenue increased from $2,284,543 to $2,730,850. TOT revenue is used for maintaining city infrastructure. In November 2018, voters improved a 1 percent TOT increase, bringing the rate to 11 percent on the cost of any hotel room rate in the city limits. Krouskup said he thinks the hotel’s objection to the project comes from a fear of competition. Krouskup said that the interactions he has witnessed between the signature gatherers has been cordial. However, Panwala and some signature gatherers alleged those MMP properties paid to hand out brochures have harassed the signature gatherers and impeded on the petition process. Louise Brotz has been working for years as a paid signature gatherer, but said she has never encountered a situation where other people are being paid to block petition signatures. She alleged the people handing out flyers have followed her and frequently shouted when residents were trying to sign the petition. “It’s virtually impossible to do what you need to do because people don’t want to be in the middle of that,” said Brotz.

After participating in the Britton Middle School Robotics Club led by adviser Frank Orlando, Kobe Nguyen and Ethan Hanlon decided to start a club at Live Oak High School. Last year, they approached Kristopher Boursier, and she agreed to be the Live
Oak faculty adviser for a robotics club. Hanlon led weekly meetings in Boursier’s classroom, and the club grew and adopted the name Nuts and Bolts Robotic Club to honor the school’s acorn mascot. Five club members first competed in the Tech Museum’s Tech Challenge in April 2018. After that, Hanlon set his sights on the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), where students design and build
an aluminum-framed robot that weighs up to 125 pounds that completes specified tasks in an arena about half the size of a basketball court. FIRST, an acronym for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a worldwide organization that provides students with the opportunity to gain confidence to explore the innovation process while learning science, engineering, technology, teamwork and
problem-solving skills. Participants are eligible to apply for more than $80 million in FIRST scholarships from leading colleges and universities. With help from established FRC teams, most notably the Valley Christian High School team, and mentors Brent Taira, Annette Lane and Jim Hanlon, the Nuts and Bolts team has secured a grant from NASA, a sponsorship from Nutanix and help from many other
community members. The students held a day long “Build-A-Thon” on the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday and raised over $1,000. “School and district administration have been extremely supportive, including providing a dedicated workshop for the team,” according to the club. The FRC competition kicked off Jan. 5, when details of the mission were unveiled in a live stream watched by thousands of participants around the
world. The teams have only six weeks to design, build, program and test their robot. The Live Oak Nuts and Bolts Robotics Team is competing in the Monterey Bay Regionals, to be held in Seaside on March 21-24. OPINION FROM THE WEB Re: Heller cartoon, Feb. 22 print edition I just saw a cartoon created by Joe Heller in your Feb. 22 edition. The cartoon is of President Trump declaring a national emergency because he was only given two packets of ketchup after he asked for three, upon opening his bag from McDonald’s. How dare the Morgan Hill Times allow such an outrageous political assault and trivialize the importance of the declared emergency. We have caravans of people illegally flooding into our country, including sex traffickers, drug runners, and some intending to cause great harm against the U.S. Joe Heller, you may think this is a laughing matter, but we don’t find it funny. You’re a fool, and shame on the Times for allowing it. Dan Roth via Facebook

Don’t sign the petition
M
y 20-plus years of experience representing the citizens of Morgan Hill has taught me many valuable lessons, and there is one that really stands out: Morgan Hill people don’t like taxes and won’t support tax measures. Yet our great city faces many financial challenges; funding an adequate number of police officers, maintaining our infrastructure and fully funding our pension liabilities are three that immediately come to mind. Your elected city council has done a very good job of identifying and beginning to implement funding alternatives for increasing municipal income. The strategy is built around economic development. Our outstanding economic development staff at city hall spent over a year developing a “blueprint” aimed at maximizing city income from economic expansion. They’ve now had over a year of implementing specific tasks identified in the blueprint, and they are making outstanding progress on the identified action items. We always want to get maximum citizen participation and buy-in when developing plans, and we were fortunate to get strong input on the blueprint, including many of the folks considered “thought leaders” in Morgan Hill. It was completed to the total satisfaction of those involved and sailed through approval at the planning commission and city council. The blueprint identifies four areas of economic pursuit: innovation and manufacturing, retail, tourism and medical. For tourism, the blueprint establishes that the current inventory of 900 rooms is inadequate for today’s demand and needs to be increased for visitors, whether they be tourists or employees at new businesses. To enable expansion, zoning changes are required. It also established the need for some of our existing hotels to be upgraded and modernized. Based on how widely our economic

blueprint was accepted, I believe the community is supportive of the actions identified in it. A group of hotel owners has started a petition for a ballot measure to potentially reverse the unanimous council approval of a zoning change needed to enable two identified and committed hotels to build in the most logical spot for them. If successful, the resulting delay will be costly in many ways.

Re: ‘Guest view: City hasn’t learned on hotel issue’ My opinion: this petition is supported by the Comfort Inn, thus I assume they are scared of the competition. Please let the people choose. If you have a quality hotel with good pricing, people will choose your hotel. This is business. They are using a petition to decrease competition in the market. This personal interest petition, if it passes, will cost the taxpayers (me and you). Please do not support this petition. “Mo GP” via Facebook
Re: ‘Guest view: Hotels are good for the economy’ I would suggest that the new mayor sit down and meet with current hotel owners and ask them what is (their) vacancy rate on a weekly and monthly level. This will determine whether a new hotel is warranted, not some pie-in-the-sky dream of increased tourism. Bring in high tech companies; that will increase revenues. Gino Borgioli via Facebook

Nurses want county to bargain ➝ St. Louise, 1
approval of the sale to U.S. District Court, and sought a stay of the sale, pending resolution of the appeal. If successful, Becerra’s effort would have voided the county’s purchase agreement and forced the two hospitals to close. There were no other purchase offers. “The public interest factors weigh against the stay,” U.S. District Court Judge R. Gary Klausner wrote in his six-page opinion. “A stay may result in the cancellation of the sale, which could in turn lead to a closure of both hospitals. “The bankruptcy [court] did not abuse its discretion when it found that ‘far from protecting the health and welfare, a stay would set in motion a series of events that, in all probability, would reduce the availability of healthcare services to the public,” the judge wrote in his ruling. A spokesperson for the attorney general still had conceded defeat early this week. On Feb. 25, Becerra’s press office issued a terse statement: “We are exploring our options.” The attorney general had only one option after Klausner’s ruling—to ask the 9th CIrcuit Court of Appeals to intervene before Feb. 28, a move
observers considered futile and unlikely. "These two hospitals are essential to the continued health and well-being of folks in our region,” said Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian, president of the county Board of Supervisors. “Continued litigation by the attorney general is a distraction from the important work we have to do. It's time to stop arguing about who's right and start focusing on what's right, and that's taking care of the folks here in the county who need our help." Becerra had argued it was necessary to block the sale—even it if meant closing the hospitals— to ensure that his office could enforce guarantees of healthcare services. “Two federal judges have now rejected the attorney general’s arguments against the county as meritless attempts to exert authority he does not have over local governments,” said County Executive Jeffrey V. Smith. “The county will ensure that O’Connor and Saint Louise hospitals continue serving our communities with the enhanced services we will offer through the hospitals as part of the county’s integrated health system.” Klausner affirmed in today’s ruling an earlier decision in Bankruptcy
Court that the sale of the hospitals “is not reviewable by the attorney general.” “Losing Saint Louise Hospital simply was not an option for me and for the 100,000 Gilroy and Morgan Hill residents who would have lost their local hospital,” said Supervisor Mike Wasserman, whose district includes Gilroy and Morgan Hill. “I am grateful to the many people who joined our fight.” “This is all about the thousands of patients who need our services, 451 hospital beds and 1,700 highly trained and dedicated nurses, doctors and other healthcare industry workers who provide those services,” said Supervisor Cindy Chavez in a statement. “We are very pleased that the district court denied the stay, allowing the county’s purchase of the hospitals to go forward,” said Williams. “The county has and will continue to serve as a model for local governments nationwide in protecting the health and well-being of our residents.” Smith predicted that after the county takes legal possession of the two hospitals on March 1, the transition process will be “seamless” as far as patients are concerned, wth most of the
Jeff Smith doctors and staff at the two hospitals staying at their current jobs. There is one more bump in the road for the county—a possible strike by Saint Louise and O’Connor nurses. The California Nurses Association, which represented nurses at O’Connor and Saint Louise under contracts voided by the Bankruptcy Court, has asked the state Public Employment Relations Board to intervene on the nurses’ behalf. The nurses union is a rival of the Registered Nurses Professional Association, which represents nurses at the flagship of the expanded county healthcare system, Santa
Xavier Becerra Clara Valley Medical Center. The new countyemployee nurses will be covered by the RNPA contract beginning March 1. CNA members told the county Board of Supervisors last week they would strike at O’Connor and Saint Louise if the county didn’t recognize their union and begin negotiations on a new nurses contract for the two hospitals. The CNA has asked the state Public Employee Relations Board to seek an injunction in state court next week to force the county to the bargaining table. The county said to do so would violate state law, the RNPA contract and the county’s own personnel rules.
“We asked the PERB to seek an injunction to ensure the county bargains in good faith with the Saint Louise and O’Connor nurses through their chosen union, CNA,” said Andrew Prediletto, the regional CNA director. “We want to ensure nurses stay at the hospitals and to preserve the patient care protections that nurses have won over the past two decades.” Felix de la Torre, general counsel for PERB, said he will make his recommendation on the CNA request to the board by March 1, but said he could not say when or if the quasi-judicial board would make a decision.
We are pleased that the district court denied the stay, which will allow the county to complete its purchase of the hospitals. We will now be able to keep these hospitals open to ensure access to healthcare for the residents of Santa Clara County. —JAMES WILLIAMS

DON’T SIGN THAT PETITION! HERE’S WHY:
You may be asked to sign a petition that, if successful, would REDUCE funds available for our Police Department, Fire Department, road repairs, parks and public schools. It would also COST our city $200,000 to $400,000 for a needless special election. These professional signature gatherers from outside our community are PAID for your signature. Unfortunately, they may misrepresent the facts to get it.
KNOW THE FACTS! •

Rape hearing postponed again SHARWIAN BOBIAN TO RETURN TO COURT MARCH 14
Micael Estremera of the Santa Clara County Public Defender’s Office, said the 43-year-old defendant was in custody at the courthouse for his latest hearing. However, for unspecified reasons, Estremera asked Judge Nona L. Klippen to waive Bobian’s appearance Feb. 21 “for this proceeding only.” He also did not appear in the courtroom for a Feb. 14 hearing. The Feb. 21 hearing was scheduled for Bobian to make a plea, but neither
Michael Moore Editor
Sharwian Bobian, a homeless man accused of raping a San Martin woman who had been assisting him, again waived his appearance Feb. 21 at a hearing at the Morgan Hill courthouse. Bobian’s attorney,
he nor his attorney entered one. His next hearing is scheduled for March 14. Bobian, 43, remains in custody in lieu of $275,000 bail on the charge of rape. He is accused of sexually assaulting the victim the night of Jan. 2 inside Bobian’s makeshift shelter on Llagas Avenue. The victim and her husband, who live in San Martin, had been helping the homeless man for several months prior to the alleged rape. Bobian was initially
arrested by sheriff ’s deputies the night of Jan. 2, when the victim reported the alleged assault to authorities. However, he was released less than two days later as Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen’s office declined to press charges. On Feb. 5, the DA reversed course and filed a rape charge against Bobian in relation to the Jan. 2 incident in San Martin. San Jose police found and arrested him Feb. 8 in the
area of U.S. 101 and Yerba Buena Road. At the courthouse Feb. 21, the victim’s husband expressed growing exasperation with the repeated delays. “I’m frustrated with the system, and with the lack of communication from the district attorney’s office,” said the victim’s husband, who this newspaper is not identifying by name. “We’re just continually coming to court, and they just keep moving it. I felt like nothing was decided today.”

Dance company sued for negligence ➝ Lawsuit, 1
Loyd was convicted of molesting four children on the southwest Morgan Hill elementary campus, and is currently serving a 40-year prison term. Cerri said the plaintiffs in the Cole case are hoping to resolve their complaint with MHUSD out of court. “Given our experience with the MHUSD, we are hopeful that we will be able to come to a resolution that is in the best interests of our clients without much involvement of our clients or having to proceed to trial,” Cerri said. It was also revealed during Cole’s criminal trial that, prior to the alleged abuse during The Nutcracker,” Cole had been the subject of a history of complaints to MHUSD staff. In 2014, a Sobrato student told school staff that Cole— then a school employee—had
inappropriately touched and spoken to her. Two school staff members at the time— drama teacher Chris DeMelo and assistant principal Vera Gomes—conducted a cursory investigation into the student’s accusations and found her complaint not credible. The school employees did not report the abuse allegations to police. Cole continued to be employed by the school district until 2016, according to testimony in the criminal trial. While the plaintiffs in the January lawsuit are listed anonymously, this incident closely matches the experience of plaintiff “Jane Doe 3” as described in Allard’s complaint. This girl was “sexually abused, molested, harassed and/ or assaulted” by Cole on the Sobrato High campus, “many times in front of school staff,” the
complaint reads. The victim, a Sobrato student at the time, was subjected to Cole’s abuse starting with the 2014-15 school year, through August 2017. Allard’s lawsuit says a complaint in 2014 to MHUSD staff had to do with Cole’s behavior toward two female students. The January lawsuit notes that state law considers the MHUSD employees to be mandatory reporters of alleged Kevin Cole child abuse, and accuses them of shirking their legal obligation to report the complaints about Cole to local police. MHUSD “owed a duty, through its employees, to supervise and protect such children entrusted to its care
from harm…and to report any reasonable suspicion of child abuse” to law enforcement, the lawsuit reads. MHUSD spokeswoman Lanae Bays said the district is currently “limited in the ability to respond” to the recent allegations, in order to protect the privacy of minors and employees involved. “We can share that Kevin Cole was not employed by the district at the time of the incidents that led to his arrest in 2017, and the minors involved were not Morgan Hill Unified School District students,” Bays said on behalf of MHUSD. The district filed its response to the complaint in Santa Clara County Superior
Court Feb. 11. The response from MHUSD’s attorneys argues the the district is not responsible for each of the claims listed in the plaintiff’s lawsuit for various reasons. Cole has previously worked as a MHUSD employee in the Sobrato High drama department. In 2017, he was a drama lighting and sound technician contractor approved by the district for productions on campus. The district recommended that SVDA use him for their production of The Nutcracker Nov. 30-Dec. 1, 2017, according to the January lawsuit. The district’s recommendation of Cole to SVDA, years after at least one Sobrato student complained about his behavior, is further evidence of MHUSD’s liability, reads the January lawsuit. Plaintiffs “Jane Doe 1” and “Jane Doe 2” included
SVDA in their complaint for negligence because the non-profit company failed to institute safeguards and procedures—such as vetting adults who worked backstage or requiring the presence of at least two grownups in the costume changing area—that could have prevented someone like Cole from preying on them, reads the lawsuit. SVDA had “a duty to supervise and protect (the two plaintiffs) from inappropriate and/or predatory behavior by individuals it selected or retained to work around them,” the complaint continues. SVDA did not return a phone call requesting comment on the January lawsuit. Academy staff previously argued that MHUSD gave them no choice but to use Cole as their lighting and sound technician for their productions at Sobrato, which the district owns.
Given our experience with the MHUSD, we are hopeful that we will be able to come to a resolution that is in the best interests of our clients without much involvement of our clients or having to proceed to trial.

PRECOCIOUS PLAY Sobrato High freshman Jana Pineda dribbles down court during the Bulldogs’ 56-38 loss to South San Francisco High in a CCS playoff semifinal on Feb. 21. Pineda is one of the team’s top projected returners next season, along with Angeline Madriaga and Trezure Tu’ua. GIRLS BASKETBALL
Another strong season SOBRATO’S GIRLS HOOPS TEAM CAPS OFF ANOTHER SOLID YEAR, REACHES SEMIS emanuel lee Sports Editor
Rpbert Eliason
Up 21-15, the Sobrato High girls basketball team could almost visualize a spot in the Central Coast Section Division III playoff championship game. It wasn’t meant to be. The Bulldogs went ice-cold the rest of the way en route to a 56-38 loss to South San Francisco High on Feb. 21 in a playoff semifinal at Del Mar High. “It kind of sucks we weren’t able to go all the way, but we accomplished a lot and still have a lot to be proud of,” said Kianna Maldia, the Sobrato point guard extraordinaire. “It was definitely very emotional when it was all over, and it hit me hard that first we weren’t able to move on and second that I just ended my career.” Fellow seniors Jessica Byrum and Alyssa Rascon also suited up for the final time in a Sobrato uniform, and what a great run it’s been. Ever since Maldia entered the school—she was a starter as a freshman—the Bulldogs have enjoyed tremendous success, advancing to the CCS playoff semifinals in two of the last three years. The Sonoma State-bound Maldia brought a ton of playmaking ability, swagger and tenacity to the court while also helping elevate the play of her teammates. The highlight of the team’s season came in the CCS playoff quarterfinals, when the No.
6 seed Bulldogs knocked off No. 3 seed Soquel, 53-42. Sobrato, which finished the season at 20-7, played at its highest level yet in knocking off Soquel. Maldia scored only seven points, but produced 15 assists, many of the highlight-reel variety. “It was 21-all in the third quarter when we turned it up defensively and took away a lot of their looks to the basket,” Maldia said. “Every single one of our players stepped up, and everyone was making plays offensively and the defense rolled with it. We hadn’t played like that ever in the whole season, but we knew playing a game like that would take us to the next round. It was just great seeing that and seeing everyone so happy and believing in themselves and trusting one another. I haven’t seen us play like that in a while.” Sobrato also was playing at a high level in the early going against South San Francisco in the semifinals, and was seemingly on its way to a spot in the championship game as it led by six points, 21-15. However, SSF got hot, Sobrato went ice cold and got into foul trouble, and a close game became a rout. Maldia expressed gratitude for being able to play for coach Erica Wallace, who gave Maldia freedom to make plays and run the offense. “She would allow me to take over when it was necessary,” Maldia said. “When it was game time situations and time to make a play, I knew I had to come through.” Even though Sobrato won’t be able to replace a player of Maldia’s caliber, Maldia said the team should still be solid next season. The Bulldogs are projected to return Angeline Madriaga, Trezure Tu’ua and Jana Pineda, a solid core nucleus of players who have the potential to take their respective games to a higher level
ON TARGET Angeline Madriaga shoots over a South San Francisco player in Sobrato’s 56-38 loss in the Central Coast Section Division III playoff semifinals on Feb 21. The Bulldogs finished the season at 20-7. by the start of next season. “They’re the type of players who want it a lot and it’s great,” Maldia said. “They should be holding their own just fine.” Sobrato finished 7-3 in the Blossom Valley League’s Mount Hamilton Division, losing twice to champion Silver Creek and once to Leland. They opened up the CCS playoffs with a 60-29
win over Del Mar, going on a 24-7 run in the first quarter to essentially ice the game. They followed that up with a big win over Soquel. Even though Maldia was clearly the difference maker, other players stepped up as well, boding well for the future. With another off-season to work on her game, Tu’ua seemingly has
the potential to develop from an all-league player to a MVP of the league type player. Madriaga displayed sound decision-making on the court along with an ability to drain outside shots. As a senior next season, Madriaga will be counted upon to provide leadership. Pineda had flashes of terrific play as a freshman this season, and she’s only going to get better.

eleste Pierce (Crnkovich), age 62, passed away on February 18, 2019 in Reno, NV after a long battle with metastatic breast cancer. Celeste graduated from Bellevue High School (East), in Bellevue, NE in 1975 and attended Regis College (now Regis University) in Denver, CO receiving a B.A. in Political Science in 1979. Although Colorado has its beautiful mountains, it was a warmer climate and the ocean that called to Celeste. She moved to Cupertino, CA in 1980 where she met her future husband and obtained a certificate as a para-legal from Santa Clara University. She began her career as a litigation assistant with several law firms in Silicon Valley. Celeste enjoyed hiking, camping, and boating in California, plus visits to the beach. She also had a warm spot in her heart for stray animals and rescued several dogs and cats that became beloved pets. She was generous with friends and family, alike. And, she made a great sandwich! Celeste and Dennis moved to Morgan Hill, CA in 1999 where Celeste continued her career as an independent legal assistant. In 2016 they moved to Dayton, NV when Celeste joined the State of Nevada, Attorney General’s Office, as a Legal Researcher assigned to the Nevada Department of Transportation. She was preceded in death by her father, George A. Crnkovich, also of Bellevue, NE. Celeste is survived by her husband of 29 years Dennis Pierce of Dayton, NV and mother Dolores Crnkovich of Bellevue, NE, brothers Greg Crnkovich of Jacksonville, FL, Dr. Tim Crnkovich (Sue Ward) of Omaha, NE, Chris Crnkovich (Hilary) of Chicago, IL, and Dr. Frank Crnkovich (Patricia) of Littleton, CO. She will be interred in Bellevue, NE on March 2, 2019 in a private ceremony. Memorials may be sent to your local chapter of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
