It’s clear that Angie Tolliver is not a real editor. Her answers are embarrassing. And it’s obvious that Carolyn Schuk is not a real reporter. She clearly has no ethical standards nor the guts to answer publicly for her actions. Shameful.

SVNEWS

PIO Goes MIA Santa Clara County’s Superior Court has gone through a number of major leadership changes in recent months. Last fall, the court’s chief executive, DAVID H. YAMASAKI, They left for a similar job in Did Orange County. A What? month later, REBECCA FLEMING SEND TIPS TO traded her CEO gig in FLY@ METRONEWS. Stanislaus County to COM succeed him. Around the same time, the Hon. PATRICIA LUCAS was appointed presiding judge and the Hon. DEBORAH RYAN assistant presiding judge for the 2017-18 term. The above-mentioned changing of the guard was duly documented in a series of press releases and a few news reports. However, a more recent staffing change involving a lesser-ranked but semi-visible court official has aroused suspicions. JOE MACALUSO, the court’s generously compensated public information officer (he made $135,490 in 2015), left sometime in early February without any fanfare or even a perfunctory email to reporters about whom to contact in his stead. Court General Counsel Lisa Herrick declined to say whether he resigned or was fired, but she did note that the court hasn’t yet decided whether it will even replace the loquacious flak. Handling media relations for the time being is one BENJAMIN RADA, a former musician and Stanford alumnus who worked his way up from clerk to secretary and, as of last month, to communications. Some observers are convinced Macaluso was sacked. Fly reached out to him for comment but didn’t hear back by press time. That’s to be expected, though. Macaluso rarely responded in a timely manner to media requests, and that’s according to media outlets beyond Metro. Long before Macaluso left, however, it appears other people were already doing his job for him. Rada has been handling court access requests from TV stations and photographers since last summer, and Herrick has been the more reliable point person for journalists for several months now. Given how evasive Macaluso was with local reporters, however, it’s safe to say his absence won’t be mourned in the journalistic community.

All in the Family QUEEN OF HEARTS Gigi Vidales, 4, poses with a portrait of herself as a baby attached to an artificial heart.

Photographer captures key moments for society’s most vulnerable BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH

W

HEN GIGI TURNED 4, her heart turned 3. But she has no memory of the transplant or the nine months she spent linked to a plastic pump that kept the blood flowing until doctors found her a new heart. “Can I show this to Gigi?” Virginia Becker asks the girl’s mother, Monadella Vidales, who nods in approval. Becker crouches down and flips a glossy image toward the girl. “Do you know who that is?” Becker coaxes. Gigi smiles shyly and shakes her head, but her brown eyes widen in curiosity.

“That’s you,” Becker says, pointing toward the picture she snapped three years before. “Look how tiny you were.” The blown-up portrait shows Gigi at little more than a year old—a thick, black mop of hair, gap-toothed smile and one chubby leg kicked in the air. Atop a cloudlike pillow, she’s covered in plastic tubes, wires and bandaging. Protruding from her tightly wrapped midriff is a “Berlin Heart,” a German-made device drawing blood from her failing ventricles to a chamber outside the body before pushing it into her lungs. “How about we take a new picture to show everyone how strong you are,” Becker suggests. After changing into a long white dress, Gigi poses for Becker in a sunlit lobby of the Ronald McDonald House in Palo Alto, where dozens of families stay indefinitely while their terminally ill children undergo treatment. In one picture, Gigi sits by an antique

typewriter with a sheet of paper that reads, “I love my new heart!” In another, she holds a bouquet of white roses. Next, she’s the Queen of Hearts with a heart-tipped scepter and felt crown. “Let’s do the before and after now,” Becker announces, handing her the Berlin Heart portrait. Gigi, seated cross-legged against a bright white backdrop, props up the photo with her right hand. “Do you have a special heart?” Becker asks, popping her head up from behind the camera. “Can you show us?” Gigi pulls down her dress collar to reveal a thick, shiny scar. “Beautiful,” Becker coos. “That’s your special heart.” Virginia Becker, 62, founded the Family Album Project to photograph milestone moments of society’s most vulnerable—the sick, bereaved, elderly, homeless and destitute. Since launching the nonprofit seven years ago with her husband, 68-year-old Albert Becker, she’s given away tens of thousands of studio-quality prints for free. “When I started, I knew why I wanted

to do this without knowing how,” says Becker, who lives in the mountains south of Los Gatos. “I tell people that I basically didn’t know the difference between an F-stop and a bus stop.” The infectiously upbeat former schoolteacher had already embarked on dramatic career changes. She dabbled in acting, ran a tattoo parlor and taught special education. But Becker’s interest in photography stemmed from a deeper sense of purpose while helping a friend whose mother died. “We were preparing for the service and noticed that there were so many photos from when she was younger, but nothing from the last 10 years of her life,” Becker says. “Nothing since the digital age.” Though smartphones have led to an epidemic of over-sharing, the snapshots are no substitute for the art and intention of a good portrait. “I thought if we could get the hard copy print back into circulation, we’d preserve these personal histories,” Becker says. “I wanted to give people something to hold and to share, to put in a shoe box and pass to new generations.” After learning the basics of photography, Becker and her husband began mining their personal connections for people and places to shoot. Early referrals brought them to a senior center in Novato, to the Ronald McDonald House by Stanford University, to foster youth and lowincome apartments, to youth camps for cancer survivors and high school proms for students with special needs. “It really is like a key,” Becker says of her craft. “The camera opens the doors into all these lives and all these places you might never have gone to.” The Family Album Project has also memorialized moments that might otherwise have been forgotten. With Becker behind the lens and her husband behind the laptop, the couple began photographing those marginalized and struggling—children with terminal illness, seniors grappling with loneliness and isolation, families struggling to keep a roof over their heads and people without any home at all. In each photo, Becker tries to convey the subject’s personality, strength and dignity. “You don’t see a lot of portraits of children with extensive medical equipment,” Becker says. “You don’t see a lot of portraits of the homeless, or seniors or low-income families who can’t afford to pay a photographer.” Through the Family Album Project,

Becker has landed a number of separate and ongoing assignments that connect her with people battling enormous hardships. The Red Cross hires her to photograph people in the wake of natural disasters. Through the nonprofit Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, Becker takes keepsake portraits for parents grieving a dead baby. “Sadly, we’ve taken a lot of photos that end up being used for someone’s memorial service,” she says. “You never know, but it helps you appreciate the moment that’s captured.” Inspired by weekly sessions with the Downtown Streets Team—a local nonprofit that offers job training to the homeless—the Beckers trekked last month to a Salinas shantytown. Among the many people they photographed at the encampment, called Chinatown by locals, there was a young man in his twenties who went by the name Little Mike. In one image, his arms are crossed over his chest, but he’s relaxed, smiling. That night, he was shot in the face—the victim of one of several shootings in Chinatown that week. As far as Becker knows, he survived. But that photo became the last visual record of Little Mike unmarred by a bullet. Last week, Monadella Vidales, a 32-year-old mother of six, flew down from Oregon for Gigi’s annual checkup at Stanford’s Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Upon learning the Beckers were staging one of their biweekly photo shoots at the Ronald McDonald House a day after their planned trip home, Vidales delayed her flight. “We didn’t want to wait until next year,” Vidales says. “Virginia became a big part of our lives. She caught every memory that we had here.” Not three days after diagnosing Gigi with cardiomyopathy in March 2014, doctors sent her from Oregon to Lucile Packard to await a new heart. Vidales barely had time to pack before being transported on a medical flight with Gigi and her siblings in tow. When Vidales and her brood arrived, Gigi was swollen, round and hairy, still an infant but pumped full of medication and steroids to keep her alive. “When Gigi was diagnosed, a lot of people didn’t know how to react or what to tell you,” Vidales says. “They say things like, ‘it’s all going to work out.’ They’re kind of awkward about it.” Not Becker. “She understands,” Vidales says. “She sees these families and these kids for who they are. She’s been there throughout these ordeals with family after family.”

An inside look at San Jose politics

TIP OF THE SPEIER Roughly 500 people gathered for a rally in Palo Alto over the

weekend to call for the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment.

Rep. Speier Calls for Constitutional Amendment on ERA BY DIANA SAN JUAN In 1923, women’s suffrage leader Alice Paul introduced the idea of equal rights for women. It’s unlikely Paul would have foreseen people wearing “pussy hats” to help argue this point, but nearly a century later women are still fighting for equal rights. On Sunday morning at Rinconada Park in Palo Alto, roughly 500 people gathered for The Rally and Walk for Equality. Organized by the same women who arranged the Women’s March in San Jose, Sunday’s speakers included an impassioned speech by Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Mateo). The event culminated with a two-mile walk to call attention to threats on women’s rights while also championing support for the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). Speier, who represents the 14th congressional district, focused her

remarks on support for the ERA to become the law of the land. Congress passed it in 1972, but only 35 states, including California, ratified the constitutional amendment, leaving the count short by three states. “We now have 26 words, that’s it, count them,” Speier said. “Twenty-six words that we want to add to the Constitution. It’s not 1,200 pages like the Affordable Care Act. It’s not hundreds of pages like the so-called ‘American Care Act’ that had no ‘Health’ in it, but that’s another story. It’s 26 words. And why is this important? How can we be a country as equal as we presume to be and not have women protected in the Constitution?” In her comments, Speier referred only to Section 1 of the Equal Rights Amendment. According to polling done by

USA Today, a majority of Americans incorrectly assume that women are guaranteed equal rights under the Constitution. Ida Sunneras, a 17-year-old student at Palo Alto High School, took part in the rally along with other members of Girls Learn International. “I realized a few years ago that I have a certain restless feeling in my body, that I realize it’s not gonna go away until there is equality,” Sunneras said. “I think I just care a lot; not only for myself, but for everyone. It’s simple—justice long overdue.” Nevada’s legislature recently took up the ERA and the amendment is expected to be ratified after passing out of both the state Senate and Assembly. Two more states are needed to meet the requisite 38 to solidify women’s rights in the U.S. Constitution.

San Jose to Target Flood Scam Artists While plenty of people stepped up to help victims of the Coyote Creek flood that swept through San Jose last month, others have stooped to new lows. Complaints of price-gouging contractors and negligent landlords have prompted city officials to consider legal action on behalf of residents. Under state law, San Jose is one of only four cities in California that can bring lawsuits of unfair business practices against private parties. On Tuesday, the City Council gave City Attorney Rick Doyle the go-ahead to sue any flood-related scam artists . “We have an opportunity today to put this law to good use,” Mayor Sam Liccardo said in a memo. “[A]s we hear reports of contractors charging four times their proffered estimates for performing work such as pumping Sam Liccardo water from inundated basements on South 19th Street, while desperate homeowners have little time to explore.” According to California’s Business and Professions Code, Doyle can file suit by himself or with legal nonprofits to bring private actions. Liccardo wants the city attorney to identify how much money the city will have to allocate to pursue either option and then report back to the council at a later date. In some cases, landlords have refused to get rid of mold and make critical repairs, forcing flood victims to leave without any relief from their rent obligations, according to the memo. In the month since the flood, the city has cleared about 4,000 homes and apartments for re-entry. But many families remain displaced. Last week, city leaders put out a call for help, asking landlords to house some 500 or so flood victims who haven’t been able to return home. —Jennifer Wadsworth

people a year. That’s because of the “I” word. We’re talking about immigration.

THE BEST OF THE WORLD

T

his issue celebrates the best of Silicon Valley—a product of American ingenuity, California sunshine and the world’s most optimally diversified genome stew. Some of the world’s smartest people live and work here, with the possible exception of the ones who oversee spillways at Anderson Dam. Immigrants got a bad rap last year when they were cast as job stealers and sex

offenders, but evidence indicates otherwise. With 37 percent of the population here foreign-born, we have nearly treble the national rate, yet both our unemployment and crime rates are ridiculously low. (The Stanford trash dumpster rapist came from Oakwood, Ohio, not Sinaloa—on an athletic scholarship no less.) So give us your hired, your offshored, your graduate classes, yearning to drink employer-supplied, fruit flavored iced tea. The wretched refuse for our team-building exercises. Our prosperity depends on on foreign brain and brawn. Despite declining birth rates (OK, laptops in bed may not be such a good thing after all), out-migration to cheaper places and the inevitability of death, our county’s population grows by more than 20,000

This issue is dedicated to immigrants, from Mexico, China and Vietnam. From Ethiopia, Israel and Ireland. Even Canada, where Ash Kalra, who represents part of Silicon Valley in the California Assembly, is from. Apple was started by the son of a Syrian immigrant, Tesla by a South African. Founders of Yahoo and YouTube were born in Taipei. France not only gave us the Statue of Liberty, but eBay and the camera phone, the latter by way of a CEO who unlawfully overstayed his visa. Merci! Immigrants watch our kids, weed our gardens, code our apps, build our homes, run convenience stores, open boutiques and restaurants, start and run companies. It’s also one of the reasons why we have a rich selection of global cuisines and fusions thereof. Each year we survey, select and recommend many of the best places, and this year continues that tradition. We’re not in favor of building walls, let’s get that straight. Unless, of course, someone wants to fix that damn dam before the next flood. —Dan Pulcrano

BEST (AND ONLY) MICHELIN STAR RESTAURANT IN SAN JOSE ADEGA Portuguese restaurant Adega opened in late 2015 as a simple café in Alum Rock, a district known to smart locals as a place to eat well but not exactly a regional culinary destination. Within a year, Adega became a surprise phenomenon as the first restaurant in America’s 10th biggest city to garner a Michelin star. Now, regulars who used to saunter in for lunch book dinner six weeks out and order a multicourse tasting menu. The young team of Jessica Carreira, 23, and fiancé-chef David Costa, 30, hold down the kitchen while the front of the house is parentally supervised by Carlos and Fernanda Carreira. Lisbonborn Carlos came here as a San Jose State student, Fernanda was born in the Azores and David hails from a Lisbon suburb. First-gen Jessica is the only native in the pack but learned culinary chops in the mother country.

EDITORS’ PICK BEST PLACE TO GET SOUPED UP AND SING MI QUANG CO THAO Despite its newcomer status, in less than a year Mi Quang Co Thao has deservedly earned a reputation for having one of the South Bay’s best renditions of Bun bo Hue in the South Bay. Their version of the beef-based soup covers all the bases: sweet, salty, spicy and sour—all blended into one cohesive dish. Generous helpings of meat and rice noodles in each bowl are just a bonus, really. The north San Jose restaurant’s yellow Turmeric Noodle dish is also a tasty treat worth trying. A modern Vietnamese-style interior and friendly and courteous service gives them a leg-up on similar establishments. As a bonus, they also have a sweet stage for live karaoke performances at night.

BEST HOPE TO BREAK THE CURSE OF CASA CASTILLO SOCIAL POLICY “The Curse of Casa Castillo” is well known among downtown restaurateurs and San Jose culture writers—Hi, Sal! But for the uninitiated, here’s a primer: back in 2001, Casa Castillo was doing just fine in its digs at 200 S. 1st Street on the Paseo de San Antonio pedestrian corridor. Then the city’s redevelopment agency forced the Mexican joint to vamoose. Since then, many have tried to make something work there, but none have lasted long. We think Social Policy, or “SoPo” as it’s known, has what it takes. It’s the third brick and mortar location by Bellano Coffee. They serve excellent coffee under their own brand, Kickback, which they roast themselves just south of downtown. The coffee is sourced mostly from Central and South American growers, which contributes to its bright flavor and smooth finish. They also have an excellent menu, courtesy of Executive Chef Marshal Reid, plus beer and wine on the way.

EDITORS’ PICK BEST AROUND THE HORN ENTREE JUBBA Jubba serves one the more difficult cuisines to find in the South Bay, as East African/Somali doesn’t turn up many search results. We’ve heard it described as almost a fusion of Mexican and Caribbean foods, but not really. Customers can’t go wrong in ordering a Sambusa appetizer and the Kay Kay. The Sambusa is a deep-fried pastry dough, filled with a spicy blend of meat and veggies—one is never enough. The Kay Kay is a stir-fry mix of beef (or chicken), vegetables, bananas and chopped chapatti (imagine naan on steroids). Each bite is savory and sweet with just the right amount of kick.

EDITORS’ PICK BEST PLACE TO SHUT UP AND ORDER WHAT’S ON THE MENU ALOHA FRESH Build-Your-Own-Poke places proliferate the South Bay, but Cupertino’s Aloha Fresh offers a sorely needed change of pace that features pre-set legit Poke recipes by native Hawaiians. With fish that’s flown in daily from Hawai’i and ingredients sourced from surrounding farms, Aloha makes it easy to eat healthy and delicious. Their toothsome black rice base and “Surf and Turf” combo, featuring one poke mix and Kahlua pork, is da real kine.

EDITORS’ PICK BEST BRUSQUE FISHMONGER K&C WHOLESALE When feeling a powerful lust for red salmon, some head straight for the nearest supermarket. But for the serious seafood aficionado, there’s simply no substitute for a trustworthy fishmonger. K&C Wholesale, located in the Luna Park neighborhood of San Jose, is the real deal. With no street-facing entrance, customers must pull around the back of the unassuming warehouse building. Check the whiteboard for the day’s prices and be prepared: bring cash and brace for a no-nonsense transaction. It’s doubtful that the folks at K&C have ever perused a corporate grocer’s customer service manual, but when you’re getting fish this fresh, who cares? 30

EDITORS’ PICK BEST OBSCURE SOUTH AMERICAN FRUIT CHAPPARRAL SUPERMARKET When it comes to finding an appropriately large tortilla for wrapping a burrito or securing the best deal on avocados, savvy Silicon Valley shoppers should know to head to the nearest Mexican super market. But what about satiating a lust for the sweet, citrusy tang of a mamoncillo; the particularly Peruvian zing of aji amarillo; or for the perfectly balanced cup of yerba mate? Chapparral Supermarket, a Latin American market on East Santa Clara Street, carries hard-to-find South American products from Jamaica, Cuba, Nicaragua, Colombia, Peru, Argentina and beyond. That includes Spanish limes, brands like Incas Food and a wide selection of yerba mate blends for the discerning mate drinker.

BEST REASON TO WAIT 20-30 MINUTES TAYIBAAT MEAT AND GRILL Tayibaat Meat and Grill is an unassuming halal butcher shop in Milpitas that turns into a foodie haven around noon. The wait to get a seat in this quaint eatery can be anywhere from 20-30 minutes. Tayibaat has a small, curated menu that features mostly kabobs, rotisserie chicken and hamburgers—now featuring halal bacon! The rotisserie chicken is quite good, but we usually stick with the kabobs. They have either “Chili” or “Tikka” kabobs, with the former being cubed and the latter consisting of ground meat. Our personal favorite, though, is the Lamb Chili. Dishes come out with a nice helping of fluffy basmati rice and Afghan bread.

BEST PLACE TO BECOME A BELIEVER ROSITA’S DE BASILIO DELI & MARKET We should all be so lucky to have an abuelita cooking up something delicious and familiar, and this Alviso treasure provides just that vibe. A refreshing change of pace from the get-in-get-out dining experience, Rosita’s serves up traditional Mexican fare—but two highlights not to be missed are the Chicken Mole and Carnitas. The Mole has a nice, deep chocolate flavor that blends well with the tender chicken, and their Carnitas are prepared a little unusual, as they’re fried up chopped thin and crisp (almost like a Machaca) in the pan. One bite will make anyone a believer.

EDITORS’ PICK BEST PLACE TO MAKE A NEW INDONESIAN FRIEND INDO CAFE Another cuisine that may be unfamiliar for many, Indo Cafe in Saratoga has offerings similar to Indian and Thai food. Fortunately, owner Maria Handayani is a charming and pleasant guide who is all too happy to talk customers through the menu—as well as inform about her culture, if you please. The go-to for first-timers has to be the Padang Rice Combo. It gives diners a little bit of everything to sample: from Chicken Satay to the wildly popular young Jackfruit Curry. The dining experience feels akin to eating at a friend’s house.

BEST NOTORIOUS XLB SHANGHAI DUMPLING

Visit us in Santa Clara and San Jose SANTA CLARA 3127 Mission College Blvd.

This polarizing dim sum joint specializes in Shanghai, or Hu, cuisine. While there are plenty of good options on the menu, it’s their Xiaolongbao (a.k.a. XLB) soup dumplings that make this Cupertino eatery a must-try. They have all the usual cast of characters—Salt and Pepper Fish, Smoke Duck and the Shanghai-style Stir Fried Noodles— but we’d be remiss in not suggesting (no, demanding) customers order at least two or three orders of the XLB. Maybe even try the pan-fried version. Shanghai Dumpling even has a little dinner theater, as two employees are stationed at a window near the front doing nothing but frantically preparing basket-after-basket of the XLBs.

Look. There’s nothing wrong with a quick gut bomb at the nearest taco truck or a late-night orange sauce explosion. We’ve had plenty of those in our time. But when it comes to refined Mexican cuisine at a price that won’t break the bank, Olla Cocina excels. With its great interior design, fantastic selection of tequila and mezcal, and Executive Chef Everardo Andrade dreaming up inventive yet authentic renditions of the food he grew up eating in his native Veracruz, this addition to San Pedro Square feels more like something you’d encounter in a hip nightlife district of de efe than an anglicismo eatery. Try the albondigas (lamb meatballs), the huarache vegetariano (a corn masa patty topped with shiitake, butternut squash and more delicious veggies), or the lenguado relleno de mariscos (a sort of turducken of the sea with plenty of delicious Latin spices). Wash it all down with a super michelada.

BEST SOUR OF SPRING THE VALLEY OF THE HEART’S DELIGHT It may seem like a homer pick to tab a beer called The Valley of the Heart’s Delight, but Almanac Brewing Company—based out of San Francisco—paid homage to Santa Clara Valley’s agricultural roots in killer fashion. We stumbled upon this beautiful bottle of 7-percent ABV suds at Spread in Campbell. While the price tag ($14.99) sent shockwaves through our digital wallet, we blissfully gave in to the extraordinary flavor combinations of a sour blonde ale aged in wine barrels with apricots and strawberries. We would drink this all the way to summer if our partners didn’t control the purse strings. 48

EDITORS’ PICK BEST PLACE TO DISCOVER HONDURAN GOLD MAYA’S CAFÉ The very definition of a quaint, hole-in-the-wall restaurant, Maya’s Café is located in a nondescript strip mall on the San Jose-Campbell border. The décor looks like a FIFA affiliate—absent the corruption, of course—and there’s always a fútbol game on the telly. The owner is an extremely affable man, who’s always making sure customers are happy. The menu leans primarily towards Honduran food, but also features Mexican and Salvadorian dishes, as well. The Sopa de Mariscos (seafood soup) features a Thai-like coconut base (sans the curry) and huge pieces of fresh fish—including a giant crab claw. Our go-to is the Camarones Aztecas: shrimp stuffed with cheese and jalaopeños and then wrapped in bacon. Pair these suckers with a side of rice, beans and handmade corn tortillas and its piggy time.

BEST KINGS OF THE CORNER DIRIDON MARKET Johnny (left) and Marwan Akkary are the kings of one well-trafficked corner in San Jose. Taking a page out of Cheers, the brothers know the name of just about everyone who enters Diridon Market—a block from downtown San Jose’s tarin station—and they always have a smile at the ready. As Christians who experienced religious discrimination in Syria, the brothers immigrated to the U.S. in 2013 and bought the bodega a year later. Their devotion to customers is second to none, as they stay open most holidays and regularly update their food, beer and wine selection upon request. “We grew up in a tiny village,” says Johnny, who worked as a product manager for a global paint company before coming to the U.S. “Everybody knew us and everybody cared about us. So, when we came to this community, we also brought this part of our culture. We care about this community and they care for us. Some neighbors don’t even shop here and they just come by to say hi.” Marwan, who previously owned two furniture stores, has a boisterous laugh and speaks English, Arabic, French and “un pequito” Spanish, which has come from his frequent conversations with neighbors. “Americans are open to everybody,” Marwan says. “I put on the music I like and they accept me as I am.”

EDITORS’ PICK BEST REDUX OF CLASSIC ’70S DAYTIME TV THE GO GO GONG SHOW Local poet, writer and host extraordinaire “Mighty” Mike McGee has been organizing open mic nights for years. These days he’s really caught on to a winning formula by recognizing and recreating the schlocky genius of The Gong Show, an amateur talent show created by the late, great Chuck Barris, which ran in syndication for a decade into the ’80s. Deploying his charm and quick wit, McGee is the ideal host for the show, which gives contestants control of the stage as long as they can hold the crowd’s attention, or until one of the local “celebrity” judges decides enough is enough and clangs the massive gong, which serves as a sonic vaudeville hook.

EDITORS’ PICK BEST MONTHLY FIX FOR FANCY ISLAND DRINKS 55 SOUTH’S TIKI NIGHT The beaches of Santa Cruz aren’t too far away, but they are chilly. Fortunately, 55 South hosts a totally bodacious tiki night on the last Tuesday of every month. Grab seriously sugary, fruit-flavored rum drinks fashioned by the craft cocktail lounge’s talented mixologists. A few examples from March’s tropical festivities include the Zombie, Castaway, Big Bamboo and Lady of Singapore. All libations are served in novelty ceramic mugs—some are fashioned into the likeness of parrots, plenty have little umbrellas and all pack a Hawaiian punch.

EDITORS’ PICK BEST ALL-AGES MUSIC VENUE WHERE YOU CAN STILL BUY A DRINK ART BOUTIKI Outside of privately—and often covertly—organized shows at houses and in industrial spaces, there aren’t many places where the under-21, and especially the under-18, can catch live music in the South Bay. That’s what makes the SLG Art Boutiki such a gem. A comic book store and digital shirt-printing shop by day, by night it often hosts live music. Many of the region’s best young bands regularly rock the SLG stage and the venue also brings through many touring acts. But just because the venue is open to those not allowed in bars doesn’t mean it’s dry. During certain shows, beer and wine is available for the 21-plus crowd. 63

EDITORS’ PICK BEST CAFFEINATED COMEDY FIX KEVIN WONG South Bay comedy veteran Kevin Wong began hosting monthly comedy shows at Red Rock Coffee in Mountain View because of the café’s history of supporting local arts. Proprietors were kind enough to give Wong and co-producer Wendy Bartholomew the coveted Saturday night slot. Wong’s affinity for the offbeat lends itself well to his lineups, which usually feature four to five comics who represent various cross-sections of humanity. “First question I ask is, ‘Do they add to the show?’” Wong says. “I like left turns out of people that are slightly different.” His knack for assembling a solid lineup has earned him a following. “It’s beginning to feel like family,” he says. Headlining the next show is Zack Chapaloni, a regular at the San Francisco Punchline, as well as star and co-writer of Metacafe’s PausePlay. Unlike many a comedy venue, Red Rock’s a booze-free affair, but there’s a bar next door.

Donations help with living costs and tuition, so refugees can train themselves for a career instead of low-wage work. IRC also partners with employers to hire refugees, many of whom have degrees and were forced to leave good jobs in their native countries. “It’s about being open to those who no longer feel safe in their own country and who desperately want a chance to start over,” Ferguson says. “When I work with refugees, it makes me feel patriotic.”

EDITORS’ PICK BEST THREADS TO HONOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE URBAN NATIVE ERA Our special issue dedicated to the contributions of Silicon Valley immigrants would be remiss in omitting a company that celebrates the nation’s indigenous people. Standing up for people who first settled the land we now call home, San Jose State grad Joey Montoya created a business that celebrates and advocates for Native American tribes and culture. A descendant of the Lipan Apache of Texas, Montoya’s clothing, music and media brand, Urban Native Era, has raised awareness through positive messaging. The customized apparel is designed to raise awareness about Native American community issues while breaking down stereotypes that brands like Urban Outfitters appropriate. Montoya has worked alongside celebrities such as Shailene Woodley, Rosario Dawson and Mark Ruffalo, all of whom wear Urban Native Era apparel and support Montoya’s movement. 73

BEST OFFICE ADMIN BY DAY, ROMANCE NOVEL STUD BY NIGHT JASON AARON BACA He started modeling for romance novels on a whim, but Jason Aaron Baca has now beaten Fabio at his own game. The Los Gatos resident, who dabbled in acting and fitness modeling, came across a book cover in Barnes & Noble featuring a studly hero in medieval garb when inspiration struck. He pulled out a pen and paper, wrote down the names of some authors and began reaching out. It took a decade, but as of August last year the 43-year-old Baca has modeled for more romance covers than the long-locked godfather of the genre. “It’s been an amazing journey,” says Baca, who has kept his job as an admin at the county Housing Authority. “I’m shy by nature, and this has given me a way to express myself in a way that I couldn’t with acting.” Baca keeps a strict diet and exercise routine, and his side hustle as romance novel eye candy has forced him to kick it up a notch. “After I beat Fabio’s record, people were asking me how long I planned to keep doing this,” Baca says. “I don’t know. I guess I’ll keep going until they name a sandwich after me.” 77

EDITORS’ PICK BEST LITERACY EVANGELISTS BOOKMOBILE Bookmobiles have been around for as long as people could attach a cart to a horse. But as public libraries adapt to the digital age and an increasingly diverse array of cultures, the vehicles are as much a part of the future as of the richly storied past. The Santa Clara County Library District sent its second bookmobile on its maiden voyage just last week. Amytha Willard, the pink-haired librarian in charge of the fleet, says she never imagined that penchant for books would put her behind the wheel of a big-rig. “Bookmobiles are the best-kept secret in library school,” she says from the driver’s seat. “For anyone who can’t make it to the library, the bookmobile brings the library to them.” That means driving out to the farthest reaches of the county—from migrant farmworker camps in Gilroy, to off-the-grid forest-dwellers in the Santa Cruz Mountains, to cloistered tech campuses in every city but San Jose, which runs its own library system. “It’s all about reflecting people’s needs and reaching out to diverse populations,” Willard says. “We want to stay in people’s lives.” 80

EDITORS’ PICK BEST CELEBRITY SIGHTING BARRON PARK In a small pasture tucked between a hospital and a suburb lives one of Palo Alto’s biggest celebrities: Pericles the miniature donkey. The mild-mannered denizen of Barron Park famously modeled for the fast-talking donkey in the 2001 movie Shrek. The movie went on to win the first Academy Award for animated feature, grossing $500 million and inspiring three sequels. Perry’s handlers pocketed just $75, but they get far more support from locals, who donate money to care for Perry and his new gal pal, Jenny. The pair are the latest in a long line of four-legged forebears at Barron Park, where generations of donkeys have lived since the 1930s.

HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO RUNNING THE SHOW ORLY LOCQUIAO Born in the Philippines, Orly Locquiao started home-tattooing in 1996. Today he’s now inking some of the Bay Area’s biggest sports stars—such as Colin Kaepernick—at his Humble Beginnings Tattoo Studio. Locquiao’s family taught him the symbolism behind the Polynesian and Tahiti shapes and patterns he often employs in his ink and clothing. Locquiao tattooed Kaepernick with a traditional piece on the quarterback’s chest to represent the strength of family. Many of the artists at Humble Beginnings stay true to their culture with a wide repertoire of traditional inks. Locquiao is also the cocreator of Cukui, the ubiquitous, cross-cultural San Jose streetwear brand that mixes Polynesian and Latin artistic styles. 90

EDITORS’ PICK BEST CHINESE-AMERICAN SHREDDER ON THE CUSP OF A RECORD DEAL YVETTE YOUNG The child of Chinese immigrants who moved to Silicon Valley from Beijing, Saratoga native Yvette Young had a musically rigorous childhood. Classically trained from a very young age, her parents onced pushed her to continue playing the piano through the pain of a broken pinkie finger. She’s still great on 88 keys, but Young’s real passion is six strings. She absolutely shreds on guitar and now leads the local instrumental rock trio Covet. When the band last spoke with Metro for a cover story in January, they were about to embark on a nationwide tour and record labels were in hot pursuit to have them sign. Believe it—they’ve got what it takes.

EDITORS’ PICK BEST PROMISE KEPT THE WEEKND RETURNS TO SAP Born to Ethiopian immigrants living in Ontario, Canada, Abel Tesfaye would grow up to lead an alt-R&B revolution as The Weeknd. After a crucial plug in 2011 from Drake, a fellow Canadian, The Weeknd’s dark and deviant lyrical style and affinity for slow-churning, benzodiazepineblurred beats caught fire—and the industry took notice. Now the sound that Tesfaye helped pioneer is all over the Top 40. The Weeknd made a stop at SAP Center last year and, apparently, he dug the vibe. “I never been here before,” he told the crowd. “But you guys are showing so much love. I don’t think I’m gonna skip this city ever.” A man of his word, The Weeknd returns to The Tank on April 28.

Death to Fashion DROP DEAD GORGEOUS History San Jose’s new exhibit features fashion ranging from dead cheetah coats to mad-hatter accessories.

‘To Die For’ exhibit explores Valley’s deadly couture obsessions BY GARY SINGH

I

F ONLY CHEETAHS could talk. When curators and volunteers began rifling through History San Jose’s textile collection and discovered a vintage coat made from slaughtered cheetahs, one thing led to another. Soon enough, out came an entire exhibit devoted to the darker aspects of San Jose's retail and fashion industry. Fashion to Die For: A Shopper’s Dilemma is now open in the Pasetta House at History Park.

The title of the exhibit conveys multiple layers of meaning. “To die for” is a common phrase when shoppers absolutely must have a particular item. If animals are gunned down in the wild to manufacture a coat, or if arsenic is used to make clothes, as it was a century ago, “To Die For” takes on a whole new meaning, as it does when downtowns die thanks to suburban shopping malls. Thus, on the surface we see what looks like a historical survey of fashion in mid-century San Jose, but in reality, Fashion to Die For offers a more sinister matrix of contemplation, not the folksy stuff often seen at History Park. One almost feels transported into an episode of “Alfred Hitchcock Presents,” circa 1955 or so. I mean that as a compliment.

Concerning the aforementioned atrocities, everything unfolded locally, so the exhibit focuses on San Jose. Right here in town, animals were raised and slaughtered just so fancy women could prance down First Street with ostrich hats. Mercury from the New Almaden mines was used by hat makers and for textile dyes. The economic depression of the 1870s gave rise to racist policies like San Jose’s Anti-Chinese Laundry Association, reflecting growing discrimination that culminated with the federal Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882. Fashion to Die For is not a huge show by any stretch, but it took a lot of work. History San Jose holds over a million items in its archive, and rifling through just the textile stuff took hours and hours on end. Organizing everything into a few rooms devoted to the dark side of San Jose history was surely a daunting task. Two whole

SILICON SILICONALLEYS ALLEYS

rooms, for example, feature dead animals transformed into highbrow women’s and men’s fashion, which surely dominated downtown San Jose 60 years ago, back when retail still existed in that neighborhood. Under glass cases, we see an alligator purse from 1907, a snake and lizard skin envelope clutch from 1945, plus old-school hats made from dead beavers, pheasants, raccoons and pigeons. On each wall we see photos of the animals in the wild, in their natural environment, with accompanying text panels. Other rooms include artifacts like top hats, satin shoes, faux-leather combs, and even one whole case of small items from various San Jose shopping stores in the first half of the 20th century. A circa-1930 Hale Brothers Store credit card sits in the same case as 3D glasses from Hart’s, circa 1965. In that same case, we also see ashtrays, necklaces, and a postcard from when Eastridge Mall first opened. All the items were donated to History San Jose over the decades. Perhaps the most striking displays are a wall-size blowup of the Valley Fair poles in the 1960s and another photo of what First Street in San Jose looked like in the 1940s. The photos are not newly discovered— anyone who's researched or dug through material over the years will recognize them—but to see them enlarged to wall-size is quite a treat. As readers might already know, downtown San Jose was the valley’s economic engine for the first half of the 20th century. Every single block featured numerous retailers, theaters and a thriving service industry infrastructure. But as soon as the manufactured Eden of postwar American suburbia captured the imaginations of nuclear families, barbecues and lawn mowers from coast to coast, shopping malls began to bail from downtowns. In San Jose’s case, the retail has never fully returned and probably won’t, at least not in the same capacity. It will instead be something that redefines what we understand as “retail.” Nevertheless, let me give a shout to the volunteers and curators at History San Jose who rifled through thousands of textile artifacts. Fashion To Die For is the result of their hard work, and they live to tell these stories.

Hip-hop isn’t the only genre that’s figured out just how fun a clever prosperity-gospel tune full of choice product placements can be. Chris Janson’s “Buy Me A Boat”—featuring a rip-roaring chorus about the power of cold hard cash—has racked up more than 50 million views on YouTube. “I ain’t rich, but I damn sure wanna be,” the Missouri-born songwriter sings on the track. The conclusion is clear: money might not be able to buy happiness, but it can sure as hell buy a boat, a truck to pull it, and a brand-name ice chest full of “silver bullets.” (NV)

They say illusions are accomplished by distracting the audience. Some performers deploy misdirection, others rely on a stunning assistant. The Naked Magicians have a different approach. With the wave of a wand and an “abracadabra”— poof!—their clothes are gone. Australian performers Christopher Wayne and Mike Tyler conjure up cackles all over the globe with their revealing and decidedly R-rated routine, which mixes comedy, magic and plenty of skin. Already big Down Under (heh…) and in the U.K., Wayne and Tyler are bringing their bare-assed act to the States. (VS)

In this benefit for Casa Círculo Cultural—a nonprofit focused on fostering cultural spaces in the local Latin American community— participants will drink some of the world’s finest whiskeys for a good good cause. Whiskey makers and their brand ambassadors will be on hand to walk tipplers through the tasting process, explaining how their products are made and how to identify all the intricacies of world-class bourbon, scotch and whiskey. The event, originally slated to take place at GlassHouse, has been moved to the SoFA District’s newest sipping spot—Forager Tasting Room and Eatery. (NV)

Featuring soaring cars, invisible cloaks, mysterious house elves and talking snakes, this is no place for muggles. Relive the mystical and wondrous tale of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets backed by a live orchestra. Watch as Harry, Ron and Hermione return for their second year at Hogwarts while the Symphony Silicon Valley recreates John Williams’ score below the big screen. Watch the symphony move through gentle themes into the climactic finale—the battle between Harry and the dreaded Basilisk, summoned by he who must not be named. (VS)

On the eve of the trickster’s holiday, a Fool’s Day Function brings together a diverse assortment of local artists— including a North Bay rapper and a South Bay alt-R&B group. In all, eight performers will take the stage, while hosts Thatfool Al of Westacy Entertainment and E-40 collaborator DJ Sane work to keep the crowd going dumb. Topping the bill is Nu Ethnic, a San Jose trio who blend modern rock sensibility with a neo-soul vibe. Also rocking the mic is the BAMNaffiliated Andrew Bigs, an East Side emcee who sneaks heft into his humorous flows, which he spits over jazzy beats. (DSJ)

Even before Skrillex began collaborating with the likes of Korn, music critics have observed the crossover appeal between his brand of maximalist EDM and heavy metal. The grinding, fax-machine-death and wuba-wub-wubs of his bass-heavy drops recall the alternating chugachuga-to-screeching-harmonic breakdowns of metalcore. Viewed from this vantage the pummeling “electronicore” of Kansas City-based The Browning makes perfect sense. It’s perfect for fueling the pit and raising a riotous chorus of fist pumps from the crowd. Like the industrial metal heavyweights Fear Factory before them, The Browning merge glitchy drum machines and haunting synth patches with punishing riffs and aggro blast beats. (NV)

He’s big in Russia—like, opening up for Twenty One Pilots big. Nikolay Stravinsky was born in a small town by the Volga River, Ulyanovsk, the birthplace of Vladimir Lenin. After moving to Moscow and studying music, he played in Tarakany!, one of the first Russian punk bands to emerge from the newly formed Russian Federation in the early ’90s. These days he writes, records and performs as Selfieman. Literally a one-man band, Stravinsky is practiced at building songs live with the help of a looping station and a bevy of instruments, from keyboards to guitars to drums. He is now working to break out in the States with his new Englishlanguage album Relative Time. (NV)

His decidedly Eastern name might not conjure images of the stereotypical American blue collar worker. Nevertheless, there is little doubt that folk balladeer Vikesh Kapoor is drawn to the stories of despair now rising like a black pall from the ruins of company towns all over the Rust Belt and throughout Appalachia. And though the very inhabitants of those dwindling industrial outposts— long undercut by outsourcing and automation—might blame someone like Kapoor for their plight, his acclaimed 2013 debut LP, The Ballad of Willy Robbins seems prescient in 2017. With haunting harmonica and a Dylan-esque cadence, Kapoor weaves spectral tales of love and loss in smalltown America. (NV)

Still Here MEMORY LOSS There are some highlights in ‘Cheech Is Not My Real Name,’ but the counterculture icon’s memoir lacks detail.

Cheech Marin to discuss new memoir at Kepler’s event BY JOHN FLYNN

R

ICHARD “CHEECH” Marin and Tommy Chong came up with the “Dave’s not here” gag by accident. While Chong fiddled with a new tape recorder, Marin went outside to start an improv bit. When Marin knocked, Chong wasn’t sure the recorder was working, so he stalled, prompting the genuine frustration from Marin. Turns out, they’d been rolling the whole time. But that half-minute of spontaneous brilliance had been the result of years of practice.

“You get hit by dumb luck standing in the middle of the intersection waving your arms,” Cheech says over the phone. “But prepare, prepare, prepare. It's like being a pinch hitter. At some point, [someone tells you], ‘Go in and hit a home run.’” That anecdote is a sampling of what’s in Marin’s new memoir, Cheech Is Not My Real Name But Don’t Call Me Chong. The book gives a glimpse into the mind of a policeman’s son turned counter-culture icon. One of the book’s best passages centers around the first time he smoked pot. In the chapter entitled, “What Else Have They Been Lying About?” Marin recounts getting “high as a motherfucker” while finding a new appreciation for the stylings of jazz flutist Herbie Mann and laughing

uncontrollably with his college buddies. Then he unfurls his theory on the effects of the now-legalized drug. “I have always found that marijuana is an enhancer of whatever state I am already in…” he writes. “What marijuana does, among other things, is change your perspective. It slows things down and you get to see them in another light, from another angle.” Unfortunately, much of Marin’s memoir lacks the verve expected from the comedy legend (former ESPN editor John Hassan is thanked for being a “talented collaborator”). It’s also too short on details. For example, when Marin worked as a small-time reporter, his first assignment was interviewing Little Richard. After a “rollicking, hilarious” performance, he ends up in Richard’s dressing room, where they discover a mutual interest in smoking pot. When Richard unveils his “scraggly Mexican weed,” Marin produces a chunk of hashish, and this is his account of what happens next: “Without further ado we proceeded

to get high with Little Richard. Richard told more stories but at some point he realized that we actually were journalists and that nothing else was going to happen. He yawned and said that he had to get some sleep and wished us a merry good-bye.” That’s it. In similarly disappointing fashion, he describes interactions with Richard Pryor, George Clooney and Gabriel García Márquez, among other celebrities. It’s especially disappointing because Marin has demonstrated he’s capable of more. Over the course of his long career, he has collected Chicano art for 30 years and displayed his private collection in more than 50 museums—a basically unheard-of feat. And, as a selftaught scholar, he whomped CNN’s Anderson Cooper on Jeopardy. “He couldn't believe that I beat him,” he says of his trivia show triumph. “He was in shock. But I've always enjoyed taking advantage of being underestimated.” He doesn’t take full advantage here. The memoir pales in comparison to comedian Norm MacDonald’s Based on a True Story, which blended his real life with surreal digressions into vivid fiction. Marin’s book gives a laundry list of career milestones and people met, but only occasionally delivers on its tacit promise to let the reader think and live vicariously through its author. Still, I can’t blame Marin for putting this out. It’s hard to resist a publisher backing a dump truck full of money onto your front lawn. It’s also a start on a “writing phase” he wants to begin now that he’s “of appropriate age—a million.” (He’s actually 70). Although it’s less obvious in his writing, Marin remains an engaging, thoughtful entertainer determined to raise the visibility of Chicano artists who have long been under-heralded. Attending his stop in San Mateo is a chance to shake hands with living history. Plus the memoir’s jacket art is fun—depicting Marin smashing a pinata of his younger self and unleashing an explosion of candy and joints. Beyond the cover, however, it feels like Cheech is barely there… man...

Careful What You Wish For IN CITY LIGHTS Theater’s newest production, Frankenstein, an original dramatic adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic, the nature of mankind and its arrogance is investigated to a horrifying degree. The story, of course, is familiar—even to those who only know the very different plot of the famous movie interpretation. But this production, written and directed by Kit Wilder, is intriguingly different in its overall approach and is far more cerebral. As the show opens, the characters emerge on a stage dotted by large, stalagmitelike columns. They begin by reciting quotes from famous philosophers, giving this relatively ethereal play both context and exposition. Cut to Victor Frankenstein, who is hard at work in his lab, ignoring the discouragement of his friends and elders in an attempt to meddle with the forces of nature and reanimate a human being. Soon Victor gets his wish, but it’s more than he bargained for, as his fate and the fate of his creation are wrapped Frankenstein around each other in an increasingly destructive dance. From the bit players to the main characters, the entire Thru Apr 23 cast operates at a high level. Henry, played by Jeremy $21+ Ryan, is funny and endearing as Viktor Frankenstein’s City Lights best friend and confidant. Victor’s long-unrequited love, Theater, Elizabeth, is played by Roneet Rahamim with sincerity, San Jose naivety, and increasing exasperation. Even lesser characters like Ross Harkness as the old blind man who comforts The Creature, and Nicholas Papp as William in his first City Lights production, bring real humanity to a forlorn atmosphere. But the standout performances of the show belong to Max Tachis as Victor Frankenstein and Nick Mandracchia as his creation, The Creature. Tachis plays Frankenstein with a temerity rivaled only by his increasing madness and horror at what he’s manifested. Mandracchia, as The Creature, is both disarming and unsettling in his swings between love and suffering, understanding and punishment. Together they create a fantastic and ultimately destructive dialogue about the meaning of life and of atonement. Compared to a conventional play, City Lights’ Frankenstein is more a series of vignettes, the scenes appearing like quick flashes of light in the dark, jumping between past and present, dream and reality in a cinematic display. Everything from the fantastic lighting and overwhelming music to the movielike pace of the narrative are sewn together in a creepy, thought-provoking package. —Tad Malone

Hirokazu Kore-eda’s funniest and funkiest film yet

Side By Side KEEPING IT TOGETHER A talented but struggling writer yearns to reconnect with his son in the charming ‘After the Storm.’

The pen proves as mighty as the sword in ‘After the Storm’ BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

T

HERE ARE STILL Westerners who have never seen a Japanese movie that didn’t have swordsmen in it. Director Hirokazu Koreeda’s new dramedy After the Storm shows what they’re missing. It’s his funniest and funkiest film yet.

That said, the cheaper, smudged side of Japan shows up in all his movies—like in the not-so-sweet hereafter of After Life, the grubby kids left to fend for themselves in Nobody Knows, or the

beach-city fix-it shop with its tattooed proprietor in Like Father, Like Son. Even Kore-eda’s lesser movies show a Japan that doesn’t appear much in the movies, and After the Storm is one of his best. It’s late summer. The 23rd typhoon of the season is lurking offshore, raising the temperature to sweltering. Ryota (Hiroshi Abe) has come out by train to an old-folks apartment complex. He slurps down some noodles at the train station and goes to visit his recently widowed mom. This good-looking Ryota could be defined in one of two ways: he’s either a writer with a gambling problem or a gambler with a writing problem. He published a novel to some acclaim but few readers. Since then, the divorced man has been working as a private

detective, on the grounds of researching his next book. This excuse is facesaving, not that Ryota has much face to save: he lives in a dump, he haunts pawnshops, he stalks his ex-wife, and he inaugurates sleazy double-crossing scams with the clients who hire him for divorce work, which involves staking out hot-sheet “love hotels.” Abe’s smoothness means the viewer sort of forgives him his trespasses: he’s a rascal without any violence in him, a desperate victim of circumstances, not an out-and-out bastard. And in scenes with his mother—memorably played by Kiki Kirin—you can see where he got his hustle and charm. Kirin, who was in Kore-eda’s Still Walking, is the movie’s real reason for being. Being slightly wall-eyed makes Kirin a master of the sidelong look; she misses nothing. Her Yoshiko is a strangely joyous portrait of an old woman. Out for a walk, she talks about being followed by a butterfly, and wondering if it was perhaps her

Yoshiko is hardly immobilized by grief, though she’s keen on a little manipulation of her family. “Don’t leave grandma alone,” she whines theatrically, getting Ryoka, his ex-wife and their kid, Shingo (Taiyo Yoshizawa), to linger during the night of the rainstorm. She may be a denizen of a dingy low-income apartment, a purchaser of expired groceries, and a wearer of ratty, patched sweaters, but she’s shrewd. When Ryota says “the great talents bloom later,” Yoshiko replies, “You took too long to bloom.” She gets paid back in kind by manipulation: Ryota says, “I’m sorry I’m such a useless son,” and then we see him raising his eyes for a quick glance, to see how that apologetic routine went over with his mom. She doesn’t really buy it. Kore-eda pushes for a bit of a happy ending when all we really needed was some hope. Mostly, the humor reminds one of the Thanksgiving classic Home for the Holidays. Even if the comedy here is drier and less confrontational, this unpretentious family knows how to get in one another’s grills. The surroundings are homely, the hustles are funny, and the sage and salty old lady is an elder to be cherished.

REVIEW

FRANTZ

SPACED OUT Jake Gyllenhaal plays an astronaut trapped aboard the International Space Station with a very hungry alien.

Trapped Together the appeal of Gravity; the cast (Olga Dihovichnaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada) claw their way through the corridors as the thing chases them. But there Life are many “Now, we wait!” scenes in between R; 110 Mins science-fiction declaratives: Valleywide “We’re looking at the first incontrovertible proof of extraterrestrial life!” Before humanity makes its last desperate stand with duct tape and flashlights, there are many swears: “This is some Re-Animator shit!” says Reynolds, breaking the law against quoting a better movie than the one you’re in. Life is a movie you wish you could see for the second time first, so that everything that fails to make sense first time around, every amazingly stupid action the cast carries out, would be clarified. Glum, hushed, occasionally grisly—it runs out of a better rationale than the idea that what we describe as a monster’s wrath is just the life force expressing itself. It’s unclear this movie has a reason to exist, beyond the reason of showing what a sucker’s game it is to try to top Alien. —Richard von Busack

A lavish, smart and affecting kind-of remake of Ernst Lubitsch’s Broken Lullaby a.k.a. The Man I Killed—the latter title refers to a well-known antiwar poem by Thomas Hardy. Francois Odon’s tragedy darts between black and white and color, just as it darts between French and German. A couple of years after WWI, Adrien (Pierre Niney), a sensitive young vet arrives in a small German town to visit the grave of a friend, Frantz. Anna (Paula Beer) spots the Frenchman visiting her fiance’s grave. A friendship begins … but Adrien hasn’t told the entire truth about himself. The sentimental story works in every department, from the fine casting to the restraint of the cast (Marie Gruber, as Frantz’s mother, is particularly touching). Rumors of the next war seem visible, but the film is hardly specific to the war—it’s a warning against the sink of nationalism that seems to be engulfing the major nations of the world today. Ozon’s command of classic movie modes has never been finer—he longs for the studio-era past like few directors, but he’s never previously pulled the elements together, as he has in this romantic and engrossing film. Revivals THE CAT PEOPLE/I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE

(1942/1943) In New York, a young wife-to-be (the ravishing Simone Simon) fears that sex will make her subject to an old-country curse: that under the influence of passion, she’ll become a ravening panther. With expert sound design, editing and shadow-casting, director Jacques Tourneur, working under producer Val Lewton, wreaks a bizarre yet convincing tale, including two much-imitated scenes: a night swimming sequence and the nerve-tightening walk by the park, where something large and carnivorous seems to be lurking in the underbrush. BILLED WITH I Walked with a Zombie. A Canadian nurse (Frances Dee) crosses the wide Sargasso Sea to the sugar plantation island of St. Sebastian. Her new job is to nurse a wife rendered mindless, likely by a zombie curse. Working from a script that has a lot in common with Jane Eyre, director Tourneur establishes a mood of retribution, and of colonialism poisoning the colonizers. (It’s got nothing to do with “the natives” infecting the whites.) Here are old chickens come home to roost, as we see

in the repeated shots of the plantation’s totem. It’s the figurehead of the first slave ship that they brought to the island (an arrow-riddled San Sebastian) referred to by the islanders as "Ti Misery." No zombie gut munching, be warned, though this is as political as any George Romero movie, and the racial dialectic here is 20 years ahead of its time. Stars Tom Conway, George Sanders’ look-alike and act-alike brother, in the Rochester role of a bitter planter, husband to the bewitched woman, who likes to hold forth on the “putrescence” of the Caribbean. It’s unlikely you’ll forget the face of the imposing Darby Jones, looming among the dead canes in his role as the mute and staring Carrefour. (Mar 1-April 2 at the Stanford Theatre.) (RvB)

NORTH BY NORTHWEST

(1959) The grandfather of the James Bond adventures, with ever-traveling hero, gentlemanly villain and untrustworthy woman—and smashing set pieces scored to ominous music (Bernard Herrmann, here, at his best). When Madison Avenue ad man Roger O. Thornhill (Cary Grant) stands up at the wrong moment at the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan, he's mistaken for one Irving Kaplan, an American superagent; from this point on he's pursued across the continent by agents of the omniscient spymaster Van Damm (James Mason at his silkiest). Those sniffing around the subtext of Hitch can find some meat in the Taming of the Squire sequences, in which Thornhill gets treated by coolest of Hitchcock blondes Eva Marie Saint, like a trick who won't leave. Much elemental excitement here: the biplane sequence, still a model of suspense filmmaking, a surprise assassination, and a finale along the gigantic heads at Mt. Rushmore. Metal Music DJAWADI IS COMING The man behind the ‘Game of Thrones’ score, Ramin Djawadi, is bringing his ‘Live Concert Experience’ to San Jose.

‘Game of Thrones’ composer leads symphony, choir at SAP BY NICK VERONIN

T

HOUGH HE’S NOT a household name like Drake or Rihanna, the music of Ramin Djawadi might be just as ubiquitous. His spare piano renditions of songs like “Paint it Black” and “Black Hole Sun” help to build suspense and guide viewers to moments of revelation in Westworld.

But years before he began composing motifs to accompany the

human-android interactions on HBO’s prestige sci-fi drama, he landed his first big hit when he was tapped to score the premium cable network’s massively popular fantasy epic, Game of Thrones. Over the course of the show’s six seasons, he has pulled at fans’ heartstrings from behind the scenes. Beginning with the main GoT theme—that snarling cello line, the swelling strings and thundering timpani—Djawadi sets the tone for delicious treachery, bloody battles and political maneuvering. And he continues throughout each episode to gently nudge the audience in various emotional directions with his carefully crafted sonic palate.

This week, Djawadi will lead a full orchestra, choir and percussion ensemble, in the “Game of Thrones: Live Concert Experience” at SAP Center. This time, the music will take center stage, while clips from all six seasons of the show will be projected onto a variety of screens above and surrounding the players. “It’s really amazing to look back at how this show has expanded,” Djawadi says, adding that he couldn’t possibly have conceived of his work on GoT turning into anything like the “Live Concert Experience.” It all began back in 2011, when Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss reached out to Djawadi and asked him if he would consider helping them score the show. “I watched the first two episodes and my jaw dropped,” he says. “It was amazing.” The three quickly developed a

rapport and dived into the show. Djawadi credits Benioff and Weiss for their well-articulated vision of what the TV version of Game of Thrones should be. They wanted it to be a timeless show, set in a very specific universe. Indeed, GoT deals with themes that have been ever-present across the sweep of human history: love, deceit, manipulation, power, violence. And just as in real life, the show’s characters are multifaceted. They are capable of kindness and wrath, pity and pride, and often seek to do what’s honorable at one moment before turning around and acting out of naked self-interest in the next. Depicting the motivations behind the actions of each character does not simply fall to the show’s producers, directors or actors. Djawadi and his team also have a major role to play. When composing the music for the show, Djawadi engages in lengthy conversations about how to conjure the right feeling with his music. Those talks have led to the creation of a collection of themes. “We have a Daenerys theme and a Lannister theme,” he explains. “We have a ‘conspiracy’ theme that gets used a lot with Little Finger” and which made its first appearance in season one when Ned Stark had his ah-ha moment thumbing through the history of the great houses of Westeros. There is also an “honor” theme—often played with a French horn. “It feels very noble to me,” Djawadi says. All of these themes and more will be visited during the “Game of Thones: Live Concert Experience,” as important passages from the show are shown. “It really hits upon all the key parts,” Djawadi says of the concert, noting that he has enjoyed fan reactions in every city on the tour so far. Many have told him that the experience reminded them of many plot points they had forgotten. “It’s been so much fun to do,” he says. “A lot of people have come up to me and said, ‘Oh my gosh! I want to watch all six seasons again.”

PLANNED OBSOLESCENCE The Berkeley-based Super Cassette are releasing their triumphant new single on a floppy disc.

NO WATER AFTER MIDNIGHT

THE CASSETTE VISION and Super Cassette Vision—contemporaries of the Atari 2600 and predecessors to the Nintendo Entertainment System—may seem like relics today. But for those born in the late ’70s and early ’80s, these now-obsolete gaming systems may carry a certain nostalgic heft. Case in point: Berkeley indie rockers Super Cassette are now preparing to release their second two-song single on floppy disk. The physical copies contain two MP3s, a series of ASCII artworks, liner notes, and a “secret thank you” message to anyone who actually manages to get the floppy disc into some sort of computer. “We made 100 copies of the first run,” says Max Gerlock, Super Cassette’s singer and primary songwriter. “It’s not that likely that even one of those people will pop it in a computer at any point, so I wanted to make sure that anybody who did take that Super Cassette time would see it as worthwhile.” Mar 30, 9pm, Free The physical copy also comes with a download code for Caravan Lounge, higher quality MP3s of the songs, since at 1.44MB the San Jose floppy can hardly fit even one standard MP3 file. “Each song we had to compress to 16kb per second to get them on there,” Max says. “Colorblind,” the first track, opens with coiling layers of delay and sounds a bit like Microcastle era Deerhunter. The band cite both Radiohead and The Strokes as influences, and there are bits of both in the mix, even if they don’t necessarily sound like either. But on “Sober,” the single’s second track, the band’s deeper influence begins to show: “Koji Kondo,” says Nick, Super Cassette’s guitarist and Max’s twin brother, “the composer for Mario and Zelda.” The guitar melody on “Sober” is immediately reminiscent of ’90s anime and classic 8-bit soundtracks. Like the best of both genres, it exudes a feeling of near invincibility. It’s a melody that could carry you beyond the harshest adversity—even if you’ve already died on that part 80 times and you’re about to give up. Super Cassette begin their first U.S. tour in San Jose at the Caravan the same night as the release of their second floppy disc single, Crooked Teeth/ Bootstraps. —Mike Huguenor

ADVICE GODDESS

By AMY ALKON

metroactive.com | sanjose.com | metrosiliconvalley.com | MARCH 29-APRIL 4, 2017

AdviceAmy@AOL.com

Nobody expects a free meal from a restaurant. So what’s with wedding guests who think it’s acceptable to give no gift or just $100 from two people? My understanding is that you are supposed to “cover your plate”—the cost of your meal (at least $100 per person). If you can’t, you shouldn’t attend. I’m planning my wedding and considering not inviting four couples who gave no gift at my two siblings’ weddings. Upsettingly, most are family members (and aren’t poor). I’d hate to cut out family, but if they won’t contribute, what else can I do?—Angry Bride If gift price is tied to meal price, it seems there should be a sliding scale. Uncle Bob, who’ll singlehandedly suck down 16 trays of canapes and drain the open bar, should pony up for that Hermès toaster oven. But then there’s Leslie, that raw vegan who only drinks by licking dew off leaves. Whaddya think…can she get by with a garlic press and a handmade hemp card? The truth is, this “cover your plate” thing is not a rule. It’s just an ugly idea that’s gained traction in parts of the country— those where bridezillas have transformed getting married into a fierce social deathmatch, the wedding spendathalon. What gets lost in this struggle to outlavish the competition is the point of the wedding—publicly joining two people in marriage, not separating their friends and relatives from as much cash as possible. And though it’s customary for guests to give gifts, The Oxford English Dictionary defines “gift” as “a thing given willingly”— as opposed to “a mandatory cover charge to help fund the rented chocolate waterfall, complete with white mocha rapids and four-story slide manned by Mick Jagger and Jon Bon Jovi.”

But because you incorrectly believe that guests owe you (more than their company), you’ve awakened your ancient inner accountant, the human cheater-detection system. Evolutionary psychologists Leda Cosmides and John Tooby describe this as a specialized module the human brain evolved for detecting cheaters, or “people who have intentionally taken the benefit specified in a social exchange rule without satisfying the requirement.” Identifying and punishing freeloading slackers was especially vital in an ancestral environment, where there weren’t always enough grubs to go around. These days, however, maybe you have the luxury to do as I advise in Good Manners for Nice People Who Sometimes Say F*ck. Refuse to let a few (apparent) Stingy McMingies shape “who you are—which is created through … how you behave.” Instead of grinding down into tit for tat, you can decide to be generous. It’s a thematically nice way to start a marriage, in which 50/50 can sometimes be 95/“Hey, don’t I at least get your 5 percent?”

Though my boyfriend is loving and attentive, he’s bad at responding to my texts. He’s especially bad while traveling, which he does often for his work. Granted, half my texts are silly memes. I know these things aren’t important, so why do I feel so hurt when he doesn’t reply?—Waiting You’d just like your boyfriend to be more responsive than a gigantic hole. Yell into the Grand Canyon and you’ll get a reply, and it isn’t even having sex with you. What’s getting lost here is the purpose of the GIF of parakeets reenacting the Ali/Frazier fight or the cat flying through space on the burrito. Consider that, in the chase phase, some men text like crazy, hoping to banter a woman into bed. But once there’s a relationship, men (disproportionately) use texting as a logistical tool—“b there in 5”—while women continue using it as a tool for emotional connection. That’s probably why you feel so bad.

Feeling ignored is also not ideal for a relationship. Psychologist John Gottman did research on newly married couples, and newlyweds who were still together six years down the line were those who were responsive toward their partner’s “bids for connection,” consistently meeting them with love, encouragement, support, or just attention. Explain this “bids for connection” thing to your boyfriend. However, especially when he’s traveling, a little reasonableness from you in what counts as a reply should go a long way. Maybe tell him you’d be happy with “Ha!”, “LOL,” or an emoji.

120 FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): The dragon that stole your treasure will return it. Tulips and snapdragons will blossom in a field you thought was a wasteland. Gargoyles from the abyss will crawl into view, but then meekly lick your hand and reveal secrets you can really use. The dour troll that guards the bridge to the Next Big Thing will let you pass even though you don't have the password. APRIL FOOL! Everything I just described is only metaphorically true, not literally. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): According to legend,

Buddha had to face daunting tests to achieve enlightenment. A diabolical adversary tempted him with sensual excesses and assailed him with vortexes of blistering mud, flaming ice, and howling rocks. Happily, Buddha glided into a state of wise calm and triumphed over the mayhem. He converted his nemesis's vortexes into bouquets of flowers and celestial ointments. What does this have to do with you? In accordance with current astrological omens, I hope you will emulate Buddha as you deal with your own initiatory tests. APRIL FOOL! I wasn't completely honest. It's true you'll face initiatory tests that could prod you to a higher level of wisdom. But they'll most likely come from allies and inner prompts rather than a diabolical adversary.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Since I expect you'll

soon be tempted to indulge in too much debauched fun and riotous release, I'll offer you a good hangover remedy. Throw these ingredients into a blender, then drink up: a thousand-year-old quail egg from China, seaweed from Antarctica, milk from an Iraqi donkey, lemon juice imported from Kazakhstan, and a dab of Argentinian toothpaste on which the moon has shone for an hour. APRIL FOOL! I deceived you. You won't have to get crazy drunk or stoned to enjoy extreme pleasure and cathartic abandon. It will come to you quite naturally— especially if you expand your mind through travel, big ideas, or healthy experiments.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Hire a promoter to create gold plaques listing your accomplishments and hang them up in public places. Or pay someone to make a thousand bobble-head dolls in your likeness, each wearing a royal crown, and give them away to everyone you know. Or enlist a pilot to fly a small plane over a sporting event while trailing a banner that reads, "[Your name] is a gorgeous genius worthy of worshipful reverence." APRIL FOOL! What I just advised was a distorted interpretation of the cosmic omens. Here's the truth: The best way to celebrate your surging power is not by reveling in frivolous displays of pride, but rather by making a bold move that will render a fantastic dream 10 percent more possible for you to accomplish. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Endangered species: black rhino, Bornean orangutan, hawksbill turtle, South China tiger, Sumatran elephant and the Leo messiah complex. You may not be able to do much to preserve the first five on that list, but PLEASE get to work on saving the last. It's time for a massive eruption of your megalomania. APRIL FOOL! I was exaggerating for effect. There's no need to go overboard in reclaiming your messiah complex. But please do take strong action to stoke your selfrespect, self-esteem and confidence. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Race through your yoga

routine so you have more time to surf the Internet. Inhale doughnuts and vodka in the car as you race to the health food store. Get into a screaming fight with a loved one about how you desperately need more peace and tenderness. APRIL FOOL! A little bit of self-contradiction would be cute, but not THAT much. And yet I do worry that you are close to expressing THAT much. The problem may be that you haven't been giving your inner rebel any high-quality mischief to attend to. As a result, it's bogged down in trivial insurrections. So please give your inner rebel more important work to do.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Research shows that a

typical working couple devotes an average of four minutes per day in meaningful conversations. I suggest you boost that output by at least 10 percent. Try to engage your best companion in four minutes and 24 seconds of intimate talk per day. APRIL FOOL! I lied. A 10 percent increase isn't nearly enough. Given the current astrological indicators, you must seek out

By ROB BREZSNY week of March 29

longer and deeper exchanges with the people you love. Can you manage 20 minutes per day?

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In a way, it's too bad

you're about to lose your mind. The chaos that ensues will be a big chore to clean up. But in another sense, losing your mind may be a lucky development. The process of reassembling it will be entertaining and informative. And as a result, your problems will become more fascinating than usual, and your sins will be especially original. APRIL FOOL! I lied, sort of. You won't really lose your mind. But this much *is* true: Your problems will be more fascinating than usual, and your sins will be especially original. That's a good thing! It may even help you recover a rogue part of your mind that you lost a while back.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You say that some of the healthiest foods don't taste good? And that some of your pleasurable diversions seem to bother people you care about? You say it's too much hassle to arrange for a certain adventure that you know would be exciting and meaningful? Here's what I have to say about all that: Stop whining. APRIL FOOL! I lied. The truth is, there will soon be far fewer reasons for you to whine. The discrepancies between what you have to do and what you want to do will at least partially dissolve. So will the gaps between what's good for you and what feels good, and between what pleases others and what pleases you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You should begin

work on a book with one of the following titles, and you should finish writing it no later than April 28: "The Totally Intense Four Weeks of My Life When I Came All the Way Home" . . . "The Wildly Productive Four Weeks of My Life when I Discovered the Ultimate Secrets of Domestic Bliss" . . . "The Crazily Meaningful Four Weeks When I Permanently Anchored Myself in the Nourishing Depths." APRIL FOOL! I lied. There's no need to actually write a book like that. But I do hope you seek out and generate experiences that would enable you to write books with those titles.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): If you were a passenger on a plane full of your favorite celebrities, and the pilot had to make an emergency landing on a remote snowbound mountain, and you had to eat one of the celebrities in order to stay alive until rescuers found you, which celebrity would you want to eat first? APRIL FOOL! That was a really stupid and pointless question. I can't believe I asked it. I hope you didn't waste a nanosecond thinking about what your reply might be. Here's the truth, Aquarius: You're in a phase of your astrological cycle when the single most important thing you can do is ask and answer really good questions. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): You now have an elevated chance of finding a crumpled one-dollar bill on a sidewalk. There's also an increased likelihood you'll get a coupon for a 5 percent discount from a carpet shampoo company, or win enough money in the lottery to buy a new sweatshirt. To enhance these possibilities, all you have to do is sit on your ass and wish really hard that good economic luck will come your way. APRIL FOOL! What I just said was kind of true, but also useless. Here's more interesting news: The odds are better than average that you'll score tips on how to improve your finances. You may also be invited to collaborate on a potentially lucrative project, or receive an offer of practical help for a bread-and-butter dilemma. To encourage these outcomes, all you have to do is develop a long-term plan for improved money management. Homework: Carry out a prank that makes someone feel good.
