Tossed Out A political consultant who posted a topless photo of his ex on Twitter has failed to follow through on bogus libel accusations. This summer, SHAIAN MOHAMMADI sued Metro and reporter JENNIFER WADSWORTH for defamation, claiming a Fly column about the revenge porn incident sullied his reputation and placed him on probation at law school. Codefendants named in the lawsuit included San Jose Councilman DON ROCHA, as well as his former policy aide, ANN GRABOWSKI, who accused Mohammadi of harassment but was not involved in the revenge porn. Rocha went on the record in Fly’s story to defend his former staffer, while Mohammadi’s ex-girlfriend provided Fly screenshots of vulgar language and an admission that he’d posted a topless photo of her. The They 14-page complaint, Did filed July 3 in Santa What? Clara County court, SEND TIPS TO claimed the revenge FLY@ porn revelation METRONEWS. was false and cost COM Mohammadi friends, clients and job leads. He hired an attorney—JOHN MLNARIK, who had just lost a defamation case against a Santa Clara blogger—but never bothered to serve anyone with the lawsuit. Once the 90-day deadline passed this month, a judge dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning Mohammadi can’t re-file the claim. It’s possible Mohammadi remembered that Fly has screenshots of his Facebook admissions, or maybe he never planned to follow through with the case in the first place; it’s common for people with controlling tendencies to use the courts as an extension of their harassment. It’s also possible that Mohammadi sued to stifle a free press—a troubling trend that has gained steam as inconvenient facts are increasingly labeled fake news— or intimidate Grabowski and his ex, a respected activist and political operative who requested anonymity. In his lawsuit, which was picked up by the Mercury News and Courthouse News Service, Mohammadi called the bad press the root of his problems. In reality, his problems started around the time he tried to publicly shame a woman, if not well before then.

Cold as ICE HOTLINE BLING Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) failed to provide anonymity for people who provided tips—often times half-baked—on suspected undocumented immigrants.

ICE hotline turns neighbors, friends, spouses into informants BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH

HE ANONYMOUS tipster had clearly done her homework. In a June 23 phone call to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, she described a pair of “illegal aliens” from Mexico who had allegedly overstayed their visas. She reported their ages along with their first, middle and last names and the exact address of the San Jose home where she believed they were staying.

On July 21, a Bay Area man accused of domestic violence dialed up the ICE hotline. He urged government agents to deport his wife, who’d fled to a battered

women’s shelter. The man dismissed the allegations against him as a ploy by his wife and her father—described as “a prominent attorney in the Philippines”—to obtain legal residency in the U.S. These are just two examples of roughly 2,000 “tips” ICE listed on a call log compiled during the hotline’s first six months. Many of them were from callers who had only a passing acquaintance with people they suspected of being in the country unlawfully. “Caller requested to report illegal aliens that are protesting in front of a high school in San Francisco,” reads the summary of a June 20 call. “Caller requested to report an alleged criminal alien that he saw yesterday on the Bay Bridge,” an ICE operator noted on May 3. When the Trump administration launched the Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement (VOICE) hotline in April, it billed the service as a way

to help “victims of crimes committed by removable aliens.” On its website, the VOICE office expressly states that it’s “not a hotline to report crime.” But internal logs show that people have used the service to snitch on strangers, neighbors, colleagues and even family members. “I think this confirms what we suspected about the hotline from the very beginning,” says Avantika Shastri, lead attorney for the San Francisco Immigrant Legal Defense Collaborative. “Basically, the whole point of the hotline is to perpetuate stereotypes about immigrants.” To make matters worse, ICE inadvertently doxxed thousands of callers and the people they reported— including a few-dozen in the Bay Area— by publishing unredacted call logs online. Government agencies usually black out identifying details from records before releasing them to the public. But ICE turned over its VOICE logs in raw form with highly sensitive personal information, including full names, social security numbers, addresses, workplaces and phone numbers.

a political point, and where does that leave me?” She declined to elaborate on the man she was trying to report, except to say that she suspected that he was in the country illegally because he was “mumbling in Spanish.” Hamid Yazdan Panah, a local attorney who runs a very different kind of hotline, the Northern California Rapid Response Network, which aims to protect communities from ICE, says the VOICE logs prove that the hotline is ideologically motivated. By the agency’s own admission, ICE enforcement has been politically driven against so-called sanctuary jurisdictions, which puts California and the South Bay in the crosshairs. Meanwhile, internal emails published by The Intercept show that ICE officials were told to highlight the “most egregious” cases in each region, while downplaying the fact that recent raids have included greater numbers of noncriminal and collateral arrests. Yazdan Panah also notes that the VOICE service offers nothing new, and only refers callers to resources such as victim notification alerts. The hotline’s chief aim, she adds, is to perpetuate the notion that immigrants should be treated as a separate class. “This program raises serious questions about whether ICE is making our neighborhoods safer, or dividing our communities,” Yazdan Panah says. “It seems like an extension of a policy to demonize and scapegoat immigrants.” The result, she says: Victims are less likely to report crimes. In the first half of 2017, reports of domestic violence among Latinos in some of California’s biggest cities—including San Francisco and Los Angeles—have dropped. Metro has requested similar data from the San Jose Police Department, which has yet to compile the responsive statistics. Immigrant advocates call the reluctance to report crimes a direct result of Trump’s ramped-up enforcement. In the first half of 2017, ICE reported a 37 percent surge in arrests. As a result, unions for ICE and border patrol agents have issued statements about surging morale while fear and distrust has spread throughout immigrant communities. “We have seen the effects of these policies when victims of domestic violence are too afraid to contact authorities or go to court for fear or being reported,” Yazdan Panah says. “These policies not only destroy trust in our community, but will clearly target people of color and other vulnerable groups in our society.”

Univision-backed Splinter News discovered the alarming breach of confidentiality by requesting the call logs through a Freedom of Information Act request. ICE handed over a redacted spreadsheet of the VOICE logs. But reporters later found out that the agency uploaded an un-redacted version to a library of FOIA documents on its official government website. When alerted to the oversight, ICE responded by taking its entire archive of FOIA records offline. A week later, the library remains unavailable, and an error message on the agency’s website notes that it’s “temporarily unavailable” pending review. ICE has yet to respond to Metro’s request for comment. Both immigrant advocates and people who phoned the VOICE hotline have called the data breach a stunning display of incompetence. Shastri, whose organization helps families targeted by ICE in Santa Clara County, says the leak raises questions about the purpose of the VOICE hotline. “It’s truly astounding that they put this all out there,” she says. “Obviously, this doesn’t serve anyone’s due process rights.” While records show that some people protested the hotline’s existence by trolling operators with reports of extraterrestrial aliens, the majority of call summaries paint a bleak picture of a nation divided by fear and suspicion. In the half-year since ICE launched the service, people have volunteered themselves as informants and sought to involve federal immigration authorities in personal grievances and family disputes. Some people called to give ICE dates of upcoming divorce court proceedings or to find out if a Spanishspeaking suspect in a criminal case was in the country unlawfully. One Bay Area caller shared information about his secretary, while another told authorities that he suspected his housemate and business partner of stealing money. VOICE callers reached by Metro expressed shock upon learning that their complaints and identifying information had been exposed. When one woman dialed in to report an alleged assault in Berkeley, the VOICE operator appended the call summary with an assurance that “the information will be kept confidential, and she will be contacted by ICE within two business days.” That turned out to be an empty promise. “That’s pretty fucked up,” says the woman, who asked Metro to withhold her identity. “Some asshole decided that they wanted to post this online to make

AURICE CARRUBBA CHECKS his fitted black tuxedo one last time before the doors of the GrandView Restaurant swing open. He glides through the dimly lit foyer as a grand piano in the corner plays â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hotel California,â&#x20AC;? and he stops to speak with a hostess in a natty blue dress, before leaning over the polished wooden bar behind her to greet the barkeep with a tap on the shoulder and a few words of encouragement. He continues on his route. Moving through the restaurant, whose walls are lined with portraits of old-time Hollywood stars such as Sofia Loren, Sinatra and The Rat Pack, the affable Carrubba makes sure to greet every employee by name and with a handshake. After a quick check of the kitchen and its staff, he makes his way to the patio and its sweeping views of Silicon Valley. The sun is just beginning to set, and Carrubba has barely had a moment to soak in the view from Mount Hamilton. But then a stray napkin in an otherwise flawless flower bed catches his eye, and then a rogue out-ofplace chair. He finishes his nightly check and breathes a momentary sigh of relief. This too is short lived. The wine cellar surely will not organize itself. 12

It’s a tricky balancing act, as institutions become exactly that thanks to a loyal set of regulars who can become irritated at even the slightest change. Inevitably, however, changes must be made to spur new clientele. The Carrubbas’ secret? “Staff retention is key,” Maurice says. “We always make sure to keep the chefs and also only add subtle changes to the menu. We like to keep 80 percent of the menu intact, if possible.” In the last seven years, the Carrubba brothers have acquired four vintage Silicon Valley restaurants: San Benito House in Half Moon Bay, which they bought from their father; The GrandView in San Jose; Osteria in Palo Alto; and La Forêt, their newest acquisition, which can be found deep in New Almaden on the southeast corner of Quicksilver Park. Similar to the way Warren Buffett has acquired recognizable brands, each of the Carrubbas’ restaurants are familiar and hold an element of timelessness. While Maurice seems content with his four gems and has no plans on any new acquisitions, he confesses, “I like to find them and they like to find me.” The Carrubbas’ father, Franco,

originally purchased San Benito House in 2007. Built in 1905 as a hotel with one of the first watering holes on the West Coast, the unofficial motto of the bar is “Eat. Drink. Crash.” The creed is understandable, as San Benito House has 12 available rooms for overnight, 18 rotating craft beers on tap, a whiskey list and a barbecue menu that features specialties such as the pulled pork quesadilla. There’s also a 100-year-old Old World bread recipe that makes for some killer sandwiches in the adjoining deli. Osteria, on the other hand, is a Tuscan original in downtown Palo Alto that has served the community for more than 30 years. Located in the bottom floor of the Cardinal Hotel, the restaurant is a perfect fit for a family with deep Italian roots. Their carpaccio appetizer and any of their veal dishes should be listed on every check. La Forêt, an historic two-story hotel built in 1848 in New Almaden, was the first of its kind in California. The original chefs of the accompanying French restaurant, now in its 38th year, were retained after the Carrubbas’ purchase, as was most of the menu—including their famous Grand Marnier Soufflé. “That’s some real old-school training,” he says with a wry smile. The lessons continue, though, as the family’s newest enterprise— GrandView Farms—was launched two years ago just a stone’s throw from the restaurant. While other places tout farm-to-table, Maurice calls GrandView’s program “seed-to-table.” The 60-acre ranch, which sprang up virtually overnight, grows 50 to 60 percent of GrandView’s produce and meat, while also supplying a small percentage of Osteria’s as well. The farm features: chickens to supply eggs for fresh pasta and baked goods; citrus and stone fruit orchard; vegetables such as tomatoes, beets and carrots; greenhouses for herbs; and even a herd of Black Angus cattle. Maurice estimates that within the next two to three years the farm will supply 100 percent of the four restaurants’ food. The plan is to also start producing their own wine in the next four to five years. None of this is to suggest there haven’t been difficulties, as trial and error come to be a farmer’s most trusted friend. The Carrubbas have become experts on the soil and climate, due to the higher elevation. Last winter’s heavy rains actually hurt in some ways, but they did benefit on-site wells. This past year the farm harvested 7,000 pounds of tomatoes, and by next year, Maurice estimates, that number will be closer to 10,000. The high cost of farming has come with peace of mind. “You get to put something out on

a plate that you would serve your family,” Maurice says. One can’t help but walk away from GrandView estates impressed, not just as a foodie but as someone who also cares for the local environment. The Carrubbas have taken “locally-sourced” and environmental stewardship to a higher plane, as all of their vegetables are grown sans pesticides to allow customers to eat “clean and green.” And in the process, they have resurrected historic venues while preserving them for future generations. “When you think about it, we have acquired these staple old landmarks and we just want to continue the tradition,” Maurice says. “More than anything, I want to share these places with people.” ITALIAN

Even worse, delivery services such as DoorDash, Grubhub and UberEats encourage an even more sedentary approach to snacking. The fallout has been noticeable. Increasingly popular food delivery apps, coupled with workers’ growing appetite for lunches that take place in the actual workplace, led to a decrease of 433 million fewer lunchtime outings last year at restaurants nationwide‚ according to a poll by market-research firm A 23

The platform in the South Bay hasn’t entirely caught on, but the fledgling roster of eight restaurants includes recognizable names: Amber India, M Asian Fusion, Tandoori Oven, Pizz’a Chicago,

On a recent weekend, I decided to try Allset and see how it compared to a standard lunchtime outing. Allset offers a reservation platform to maximize lunchtime efficiency by letting users order their favorite items, pay for their meal and tip all in advance. When

a breeze. After placing my order, Allset sent notifications confirming the meal and reminding me of my reservation 15 minutes prior. When I arrived at the restaurant, I was seated immediately and served a hot plate within 10 minutes, which did allow more time to concentrate on my meal and conversation than the logistics of ordering. Despite the attentiveness of our server, however, some of the traditions—from being seated to having small talk with our waiter— felt curtailed. The experience was more transactional than personable, which may indeed be what hungry office workers are seeking on jampacked weekdays, but it wasn’t the way I prefer to dine out. After all, isn’t part of the restaurant experience about the relationship between servers and customers? Nikulin seems unconcerned, suggesting that Allset’s service doesn’t diminish customer relationships but instead adds to the experience. “A lot of people didn’t have the

opportunity to eat at a sit-down restaurant for lunch before, and now with this app they have that chance,” he says. “Our mission is to help restaurants that are struggling from delivery and takeout orders (to) bring people back in for a real dining experience.” So far, Allset has launched in eight U.S. cities and reports 500,000 orders from 600 restaurants. The company plans to expand to 15 cities by the end of the year and grow the number of participating restaurants every week in each city. Nikulin reassures me that some of the app’s drawbacks—such as not being able to modify an order after it’s been placed, or change the amount of tip based on the quality of food and service—are being worked out, and new functionalities should be in place by the end of the year. If Allset irons out the kinks and customers remember there are people trying to make a living on the other side of the app, it might just help solve the age-old problem of not having enough hours in the workday.

I WANT IT NOW Nobu’s ‘Now’ menu features quick tasty bites like the cripsy rice with spicy tuna. a 37-restaurant international empire. Meanwhile, Ellison, CEO and founder of Oracle, owns The Epiphany, a swank downtown Palo Alto hotel and home to the most recent addition to the Nobu family—the first in the Bay Area. As for the signature black cod? Well, that’s just delicious. Nobu, which opened on Hamilton Avenue in July, brings a sense of notoriety and elevated exoticism to each new restaurant and surrounding neighborhoods. With 14 locations in the U.S., Nobu has an established fanbase for signature dishes like black cod with miso ($36). The misobraised fish has no greater champion than Nobu, and the dish has been reinterpreted by no shortage of restaurants. The original version, however, remains the best I’ve ever had. The cod was served with a traditional spear of young pickled ginger and a small tempura eggplant. The fish was flaky, tender, sweet and savory, balancing well with the acidic pickled

ginger. Rock shrimp tempura with the option of ponzu or creamy spicy sauce ($28) is also one of Nobu’s more famous dishes. We ordered the creamyspicy version, which had an enjoyable spicy mayo coating reminiscent of a fancy walnut shrimp dish. Nobu’s menu consists of small plates organized under Nobu Classic (hot and cold) and Nobu Now (hot and cold), and Rolls (cut and hand rolls). The Classic dishes are meant to represent his signature dishes, and the Now dishes are often inspired by the local region. California-inspired dishes include Jidori chicken and waffles ($24) and 48-hour braised short rib ($36). There’s also an option for a full tasting menu. From the classic hot menu, we ordered a Chilean seabass with dry miso sprinkles ($39), another dish that showcased the restaurant’s mastery with fish. Buttery bass coated in dried miso crumbles and served with roasted asparagus provided a light, summery flavor. For a more modern twist under A 30

the Now menu, we opted for crispy rice with spicy tuna ($10 each). Small rice cakes arrived on a butter lettuce cups with scoops of minced and seasoned tuna on top. The dish was unremarkable, which made the small portion easier to accept. The salmon skin hand roll ($9) also tasted similar to what can be found at any other sushi restaurant, and was awkwardly closed with a loose strip of nori at the bottom. However, the soft shell crab cut roll ($18) was artfully presented in a stacked pyramid, offering a unique take on the classic by wrapping shaved daikon around the outside of the nori. Everything about this rollâ&#x20AC;&#x201D; from the sushi rice to fried soft shell crabâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;was delightful. The breezy patio seating at Nobu begs guests to linger and marvel at both the dining room interior or gaze out at the downtown streets of Palo Alto. While the seating does not include traditional low tables with tatami mats, the neutral color scheme and furniture choices are reminiscent of a historic Japanese dining room, missing just the sliding paper screens. Minimalism is key here, as beige walls and banquette

seating, wood grain tables and simple light sconces make the most of the small yet well-lit space. Epiphany and Nobu fit well together in price point and ambiance, but the dishes still leave a little more to be desired. Most portion sizes are small while prices are high, which is to be expected. Service was great and the aesthetics of the Japanese-inspired decor, sans tatami mats, were very roomy and pleasing. We chose to dine for Sunday lunch and missed out on drinks from the bar, but Nobu offers a premium sake selection along with an extensive wine list and creative mix of cocktails. Depending on the day and time, the restaurant provides an intimate environment for couples, families or a night out with friends.

WE BE PUBBIN’ Michael Mina’s tailgate party has no match at Levi’s Stadium restaurant Bourbon Steak & Pub. as “the one day chefs have off to get together and have fun” at Candlestick. When the 49ers moved south to Levi’s—which is also home to Mina’s Bourbon Steak & Pub restaurant—expanding on his original concept seemed like the perfect fit. “When the Niners approached me about starting a new restaurant, I proposed moving my tailgate party inside to do something that had never been done before,” Mina says in a phone interview. “I wanted to make it an experience unlike anything else, and they loved the idea. They built a one-of-a-kind stadium, and I felt this would only add to it.” The Tailgate’s main features include: a two-story, 23-foot long rotisserie, which is the largest in the United States; two wood-fire pits; and three extra-large boiling pots that collectively hold up to 600 gallons for seafood boils and stews. This year, in collaboration with Ayesha Curry’s pop-up concept kitchen, International Smoke, Mina added a full outdoor smoker trailer to the lineup. “We’ve kept the same three features, but the event is growing up very nicely,” he says. “Each year we figure out what works best, and we keep building from there.” Mina has also built out an evergrowing roster of celebrity and

award-winning guest chefs: The 2017-18 season features chef Charlie Palmer of the revered Charlie Palmer Group in New York, James Beard Award-winner Charleen Badman of Scottsdale’s FnB and Seattlebased chef Mark Canlis of Canlis Restaurant. Highlighting guest chefs is not just an opportunity for season ticket holders to experience dishes from different culinary perspectives, but it also creates a sense of camaraderie between the chefs themselves. “Any chef that comes to cook is our guest for life,” Mina says. “There’s a spirit of wanting chefs here, whether they’re cooking with us or just hanging out. Plus, it kind of ups the ante for the chefs that are cooking— you have to bring your A-game.” Despite all the extravagance, much of Mina’s rotating tailgate menus— and even the concept itself—go back to the basics. Smoked and barbecued meats never go out of style, neither does the excitement surrounding the most American of sporting events. “While there’s a huge wow factor to it all, more importantly there’s a spirit to it, and it’s an experience that I can honestly say you won’t find at any other food sporting setting,” Mina says. “At first, I was worried about carrying that spirit from the parking lot to the stadium. But now, I’d say our tailgates have been better than ever.”

Cinema in Silicon Valley Faces Uncertain Future BY RICHARD VON BUSACK THE CLOSURE OF Camera 3 leaves downtown San Jose without a single movie theater—a disgrace for a city so insecure about its cultural profile. One mitigating factor: it’s a temporary closure. Near the end of this year, the 33-year old Camera 3 will transform into a hybrid movie and live theater known as Three Below, where singalongs like The Rocky Horror Picture Show will still play alongside more modern favorites like Harry Potter, in addition to live events such as Q&As for Cinequest. San Jose’s world champion ComedySportz improv team will continue using the facility throughout the fall, but Psycho Donuts has vacated the space for what will become a “new café concept.” “We’ve been working with Jack Nyblom of the Camera Cinemas for a long time, offering programs downtown ever since the Retro Dome closed down on Winchester,” says Shannon Guggenheim. “We thought it was important to keep the ‘three’ in there.”

Three Below expects to be up and running by December, but the demise of Camera 12 last year leaves downtown theater-less, and plans have still not been announced on the fate of the threestory albatross at Paseo de San Antonio. Meanwhile, another local film house is in peril. With five screens and 600 seats, the BlueLight Cinemas in Cupertino has been a cozy home for the smallest movies yet still big enough to host indie film festivals. Now the discount multiplex expects to go dark for good. In a letter to Metro, BlueLight’s founder, Art Cohen, noted that “the financial burden of the rent combined with the lack of building maintenance has made it impossible for me to continue.” BlueLight stands on an eight-acre spread slated for a shopping center development by KT Urban, which was founded by the Tersini brothers Ken and Mark. KT Urban has built several high-rise developments throughout the valley, as well as a pair of towers

(22 and 20 stories, respectively) going up opposite San Pedro Square in downtown San Jose. The Oaks will replace BlueLight with a plaza for walking, high-end retail space and three- to four-story residential buildings, but it’s not certain when. Cupertino’s City Council rejected the design in 4-1 vote this summer, and it’ll be a year until KT Urban can resubmit a new plan. Regardless, the end is nigh for BlueLight. “We have done everything we can to work with BlueLight Cinemas and would have liked them to have stayed,” Mark Tersini wrote in an email. “But they were delinquent on their rent and they notified us of their desire to terminate the lease and vacate the premises. They made a business decision and we respect that.” In the meantime, a petition is circulating on Change.org to request KT Urban to preserve the theater until the bulldozers arrive.

How to Help Wine Country Fire Victims As wildfires devastate wide swaths of California’s wine country for a second week, the region remains in a state of emergency. Forty-one fatalities were reported as of Tuesday. The flames have torn through at least 6,700 structures and forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lake and Yuba counties. Metro’s sister paper, the North Bay Bohemian, was forced to close its office as reporters continue to cover the disaster. It may take weeks, if not months, to assess the full scope of the disaster. But the need for help in the affected communities is immediate, and aid organizations on the ground say one of the most effective ways to help is to give money. The creative group experiments with what people perceive to be good and bad, such as what’s ugly and what’s beautiful. Deploying a wide variety of instruments—including bongos, congas, marimba and chimes—“Pulse” promises to be an impressive display of the power of percussion. Hsieh is known for his precision. On his latest album, Bach on Vibraphone, he confidently guides his mallets up and down the bars, recreating violin sonatas on his idiophone. With “Pulse,” Hsieh will move away from the baroque and into the world of jazz with swinging drums and frantic melodies. (AJ)

A decade after The Smashing Pumpkins dropped their Gen-X opus, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, the Silversun Pickups reminded millennials just how good ’90s altrock was with their breakthrough LP, Carnavas. Former DEA agents Javier Peña and Steve Murphy offer a behindthe-scenes, boots-on-the-ground account of bringing down drug honcho Pablo Escobar—aka the King of Cocaine. Peña and Murphy were the inspiration behind the popular Netflix series Narcos, which tells the story of Colombia's drug cartels and Escobar’s bloody, brutal struggle to maintain power amongst them. The event will feature exclusive stories and images not seen in the show and gives Narcos fans the opportunity to hear from the two men who were key to Escobar’s capture. San Jose is celebrating its third annual poetry festival. The festival will commemorate the diversity within the local literary community and will feature readings and performances from several poets, such as Arlene Biala, Santa Clara County’s poet laureate. displays an enduring love of place—his family moved to Oakland in 1888 when Pedro was 6—from Mount Tamalpais to Santa Barbara, the Dolores Mission in San Francisco, the Russian River, UC Berkeley and the Stanford campus. In addition to the more than 70 works, Lasting Impressions includes a case filled with the tools of his etching trade—gouges, pliers and carving knives. The vintage tools summon up, if not a lost art, then one that’s almost extinct. They’re reminders of what he could do with his hands. De Lemos gives each tree, with its twisted foliage, as much individuality as a person. Standing in the gallery, you can picture the artist putting his administrative duties to rest for the day and driving down the coast to set up an easel along the shoreline.

OURISTS CROWDED the Monterey Peninsula this weekend. Unloosed from their large buses, they strode down Ocean Avenue to take photographs of themselves on Carmel Beach. They stood in pairs and quartets indecisively weighing the imperfections of one restaurant before moving on to disparage another. Without asking permission, one

woman plucked leaves and flowers from a local’s verdant garden. Beads of sweat ran down one man’s neck while he smoked a cigarette in the hot sunshine. He flicked the ash and then the butt onto the immaculate sidewalk. Scenes like these don’t appear in the paintings of Pedro Joseph de Lemos (1882-1954). His version of California, as represented in Lasting Impressions of Pedro de Lemos at the Stanford Art Gallery, is a place of mythical beauty—a West Coast Avalon. Instead of people, his paintings, drawings and etchings are populated with trees. Cypress are bent and gnarled by the wind. Eucalyptus stand so tall their branches unfurl outside the top edge of the canvas.

No matter the variety, the trees flank each other companionably inside the pastel-colored landscapes. But even in an iconic block print like The Cliff Dweller, the ocean, however fragmentary, lingers in the background. Here, as in many of his prints, de Lemos includes the Pacific at the end of a curving trail, an elusive place in the distance. California is a symbol of the promised land, where you’ll find sandy beaches abutting an unblemished blue expanse, sun-flecked with gold. Swimming is the goal and it’s just within reach. In 1917, de Lemos became the head of the Thomas Welton Stanford Art Gallery and the Cantor Center for Visual Arts (then the Stanford University Museum). This exhibit, which first opened in 2015 at the Monterey Museum of Art, marks the centennial of his appointment. While his tenure there lasted nearly three decades, he became a nationally regarded figure in the American Arts and Crafts movement. His expansive range of landscapes

Or experimenting with his palette for Old Pines at Monterey with three distinctive blues, patches of red flora and several shades of green that all remind us of perfect summer days on an uncrowded beach. But de Lemos, alongside many other artists, did his job too well. He mapped out the serenity of these places with reverence. His work invites the viewer in to explore every inch of California’s sand dunes, seashores and lavender-scented nightscapes. He couldn’t have anticipated the response—everyone in the world has accepted his unconscious offer to claim these once secluded, now imaginary, lands as their own.

HE UNITED NATIONS Association Film Festival deserves all due respect—“Respect” is the theme for the outstanding event’s 20th-anniversary program, sponsored by a group dedicated to the U.N.’s goals.

Director Sue Williams’ documentary Death by Design is of much local interest. It’s all about the art of downstreaming— literally. It details the fouling of water in China with hazardous waste from chip manufacturers and circuit board producers. Williams has made five previous documentaries on the state of China. Here she visits the real-life version of the orphanage scene in Blade Runner 2049, where children, racked with lead

and cadmium poisoning, are pulling apart junked computers. Other workers nearby smelt the toxic crap over open fires. Ted Smith of the Silicon Valley Toxic Coalition here calls high technology “a resource suck”—a vortex of almost instantly obsolete phones and electronics, contributing to the annual 3 million tons of e-waste the U.S. tosses annually. Of that amount, only about 15 percent is properly recycled. This mess is China’s problem, not ours, yes? Indeed, it is the problem of China, where a fifth of the arable land has been tainted by the production and demolition of electronics. Sadly, the lead particulates fly into the clouds and come down on our side of the Pacific, like a ghost of that machine you threw away. There is some hope. In one interview, Paul Maher of Ireland’s iameco, touts his company’s repairable,

wooden-framed, and good-looking computer built without carcinogenic PVCs or heavy metals. It is designed to last at least twice as long as the current lifespan of the average computer— which is only three or four years. Speaking of ill winds: Andre Singer’s Where the Wind Blew regards the aftermath of nuclear testing in seemingly deserted parts of the world. “The Polygon” in Kazakhstan was the old Soviet Union’s favorite nuclear testing range. Downwind is what’s been called “the sacrifice zone,” a cancer cluster in which birth defects are frequent. Interviewed are anti-nuke activists, including Karipbek Kuyukov—who was born without arms but became a serious watercolorist, wielding a brush held in his toes—as well as the severely disfigured Berik Syzdykov. Singer also visits St. George, Utah, where some of the cleanest-living Mormons in America were irradiated by fallout from Nevada’s Mercury test range. Regan Hines’ Incarcerating US, describes how the Land of the Free ended up with 2.3 million souls in jail.

Mandatory sentencing, federal spending on prisons and prosecutors, and creative interpretations of conspiracy laws, made sure low-level weed peddlers were treated like high-level criminals. Other matters considered by the U.N. film festival include a documentary on the first female Cherokee chief, Wilma Mankiller; a profile of the Colombian village of Jerico, The Infinite Flight of Days; and A Thousand Mothers, regarding a Myanmar-based Buddhist nunnery. Meanwhile, the 26th installment of the Silicon Valley Jewish Film Festival also opens this weekend. It’s slated to run from Oct. 21 to Nov. 12 at the AMC Saratoga 14 and the Oshman Family Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto. Here are two dozen films, many local premieres, and a free program. Opening night has Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe in the Amazonian adventure Jungle. The closer, Ben-Gurion, Epilogue includes recently discovered footage of the last interview with the first prime minister of Israel, David Ben-Gurion, conducted back in 1968. Ben-Gurion’s grandson Alon will be in attendance for the screening. In between are revivals of some Jewish-themed films that didn’t get enough attention, including the comedy The Woman’s Balcony (Oct. 30), Menashe (Oct. 31, Nov. 7), about a New York Orthodox Jew facing life after the death of his wife, and Richard Gere as a hapless hustler in Norman: The Moderate Rise and Tragic Fall of a New York Fixer. There’s also one that pretty much got the attention it deserved, Past Life (Oct. 29). Israeli workhorse director Avi Nesher has a pair of sisters (Nelly Tagar, Joy Rieger) investigating the mystery of their father’s survival during the Holocaust. Nesher piles it on sky-high. One despondent character calls God a dramatist incapable of tone, a writer who over-relies on coincidence. On the contrary, what could be said about Nesher’s script is what is usually said about the Holocaust: calling it a failure of the divine ignores the fact that it was really a failure of man.

Greg McLean (of the Australian shocker Wolf Creek) directed this middlingly interesting, Daniel Radcliffe-starring true adventure in survival. Yossi Ghinsberg (a hale and bearded Radcliffe) was a three-year Israeli army vet bumming around Bolivia doing the Lonely Planet thing. He encountered a couple of fellow travelers who wanted to explore the jungle in Bolivia before the rainy season started in earnest; when one of the party got foot rot, Yossi agreed to raft him downriver, underestimating the severity of the white water on the way and the steepness of the fragile rocks along the cliff. Eventually left alone in the jungle, Yossi found food (snake), had to do a little surgery on himself and warded off the hallucinations of fierce creatures in the underbrush. Hell of a story, and if only McLean hadn’t brought so little to the table when he embellished it. What he does bring is stuff like a close-up of a flaming monkey skull during a fireside dinner of bush meat, scary ambient noise signaling every threat and a botfly larvae as big as an Alien xenomorph during the film’s single grossest scene. Deft, this movie isn’t. Ghinsberg, who today runs an ecotourism encampment in Amazonia, will be on hand for the screening. Revivals THE PRINCESS BRIDE

(1987) Beloved po-mo fairy tale that fathered a thousand memes, and an event for parents to take their kids to see. Yet it's not really all that good—it's an oily mix of Saturday Night Live skits and old enchantments. Despite Peter Falk’s charm, Christopher Guest’s Castillian accent—and it's quite an accent, used for uproarious effect on the Folksmen track "Skeletons of Quinto" on the A Mighty Wind… despite Andre the Giant and his posse, this movie has always seemed about as genuine as Billy Crystal, as deep as director Rob Reiner, as unaffected as Mandy Patinkin, and as original as the talent of William "The Recycler" Goldman, the man who wrote it. Not a movie for fans of the writer Angela Carter, the actor Errol Flynn, or the director Peter Jackson, who all three demonstrated how this kind of fairy tale can be told with respect

Streaming SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING

Spidey versus a strangely smallerthan-life character: Toomes (Michael Keaton) a sympathetic portrait of the Trump voter type, driven nuts by regulations. He becomes a flying supervillain with the aid of the technology he kept. Toomes' gear is fast and quiet, and it can scoop Spider-Man up, like a mouse rapt by a hawk. He stays working class: Toomes isn't someone who just wants to watch the world burn— this movie has a body count of one. Strange, after all that moaning in Birdman about being relegated to superhero movies, Keaton brings in a melancholy power and dignity to this salt-of-the-earth criminal. The 15-year-old Parker (endearingly played by Tom Holland) thought that he'd been tapped for the Avengers, but now it's the familiar don't call us, we'll call you. Before he absented himself, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) gave Parker a high-tech spider suit Peter doesn't quite understand. Misuse of this suit leaves Parker in the position of a kid who just ran his dad's car into a tree. His high school life is modeled after Freaks and Geeks and The Big Bang Theory; Parker is a reject, befriended by Ned (Jacob Batalon, a master sidekicker). While trying to round up Toomes, Peter is crushed on by a ravishing classmate (Laura Harrier). Somehow his spider-senses fail to notice the rude but sharp bookworm Michelle (the one-named Zendaya). In director Jon Watts' hands, Spider-Man: Homecoming is a true comedy. There may be better Spider-Man movies, but there's never been a funnier one, one that avoids the origin story and poor old Uncle Ben. Holland is a delight—an eager, likable stripling. Caucasians who moaned about the racial changes in the casting got doubled-down on by Watts and the six credited writers. Here's a polyglot, multicolored Queens, scored to the Ramones. Spider-Man still poses in a three-point footballer's crouch in front of Old Glory, but this time she's not on a Manhattan tower, but atop a bodega-lined block. Those who feel New York today is just the latest of the world's bleached coral reefs may be cheered. If it's more frictionless than the way it works in real life, surely this is how NYC—and SpiderMan—ought to be. (Now on Amazon and Blu-Ray.) (RvB)

FIERY LEAD Josh Brolin plays Eric Marsh in the woefully inadequate firefighter tribute ‘Only The Brave.’

Total Hotshots LOCALS ARE WELL primed to admire the heroism of firefighters. Their jobs only get more difficult each year, and no praise is worthy enough for them. Sadly, along comes Only the Brave, with its unimaginative title—a true story of loss, easily predictable from seeing the name Jennifer Connelly in the credits. As the actress Sylvia Sidney once said about the weepy parts she had, Connelly should have been paid by the tear. It’s the story of the Granite Mountain Hotshots, a team dropped in to dig firebreaks and set off controlled burns in the Arizona hills near Prescott. Miles Teller is the rookie McDonough, called Donut, the town fuckup given the chance for redemption by the chief, Eric Marsh ( Josh Brolin). At home, there’s strife between Marsh and his horse-rescuing wife Amanda (Connelly): she wants a kid, he doesn’t want to leave a kid orphaned by fire. Happily, Connelly isn’t given the line “If you go fight that fire, I might not be here when you get back.” (It’s actually “You live in a glass box labeled, ‘Break in case of fire.’”) In glimpses, we see Connelly as she was in the days before she became a weeping Madonna; she’s a lithe horsewoman, and she looks good in a cowboy hat. Visually the

two work well together, what with Brolin having one of the best chins in the business. Director Joseph Kosinski has worked with Disney and on the upcoming sequel to Top Gun. Here he went with the latter’s hyper-proactive style—lots of butt-baring, cock-rock and ball-busting. The script has a lot of flatulence— backdraft, in the smoke-eater’s parlance, Only the Brave especially some two men and a baby stuff PG-13, 134 Mins. about Donut coping with Valleywide parenthood. The fires are fierce, but they come late in the film. Meanwhile, Kosinski fattens a lean narrative with failed poetry. This includes Brolin’s haunting by a flaming bear he encountered on a job— “the most beautiful thing I ever saw”—we see the bear, too, made visible in the kind of CG that doesn't work and hasn't worked from at least as far back as the flaming moose in 2009's Knowing. You’d almost buy it as symbolism, when Marsh tells the tale to his father-figure (Jeff Bridges). Only the Brave’s script is so weak that it makes Brolin and Bridges look not like the top-drawer actors that they can be, but instead like second-generation movie stars putting their feet up. —Richard von Busack

Hip-hop’s next generation comes to Shoreline for Rolling Loud fest BY MATT CRAWFORD

NEW BREED of underground South Florida rappers has gained mainstream traction while the region also serves as a springboard for a hip-hop festival with global aspirations.

After three years of hosting capacity crowds in Miami, the Rolling Loud festival expands to the Bay Area this weekend, and plans are in the works to take the festival to Europe and Asia. The Bay Area show pairs a handful of established headliners,

including Lil Wayne, Schoolboy Q and Travis Scott, with a collection of artists that represent the bleeding edge of modern hip-hop. The event marks the first large-scale recurring hip-hop festival to hit the Bay Area since the unapologetically nostalgic Rock The Bells festival ended on its 10th anniversary in 2013. Bucking the ’90s revival trend that has filled venues throughout the year, more than 50 artists performing on two stages at Rolling Loud have more in common with an XXL Magazine Freshman 15 cover than BET’s Hip Hop Honors. “We pride ourselves on having our eyes on talent at an early stage and balancing that with big headliners,”

says festival co-founder Tariq Cherif. “We believe we are helping to push the genre by doing that. It’s a beautiful blend when you have an act that has 3,000 fans, and their energy becomes contagious for the other 30,000 people at the festival.” Local hip-hop fans will recognize Vallejo-bred Nef The Pharaoh, who toured extensively at large venues with G-Eazy last year and continues to bubble with his latest release, The Chang Project. Emerging Vallejo crew SOB x RBE, Rexx Life Raj, Philthy Rich and Marty Grimes will also rep the Bay Area throughout the weekend. “On the festival front, the Bay Area isn’t really catered to, and we saw a void there,” Cherif says about the decision to bring Rolling Loud to Mountain View for its first expansion. “We know hip-hop is alive and well in the bay, and there are also some great acts coming out of the Bay Area right now.”

The festival continues to L.A. in December before planned events in the U.K., China and Japan next year. Beyond the Bay Area, the lineup offers a fresh look at the fragmented hip-hop landscape, in which many of the latest rising stars earn their stripes on SoundCloud and cultivate massive followings on social media before crossing over into more mainstream lanes. Festival performers Lil Pump, Smoke Purp, Kodak Black and XXXTentacion, a nihilistic bunch from South Florida, are among the latest SoundCloud artists to leverage their audience to attract major label interest. Tracking the success of his single “Gucci Gang,” 17-year-old Lil Pump was named by Billboard the top emerging act in the U.S. this month. Meanwhile, XXXTentacion has transitioned from a cult regional favorite to one of the most controversial acts on the pop charts. Shortly after XXXTentacion’s album 17 peaked at No. 2 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart, graphic details were revealed about alleged domestic abuse charges, including aggravated battery of a pregnant woman, domestic abuse by strangulation and false imprisonment. His Mountain View appearance is his only scheduled performance before his trial is set to start Dec. 11. Faced with a public conversation about the music industry’s role in enabling artists who are allegedly violent against women—Kodak Black is also facing allegations—Cherif says it’s a serious topic, but ultimately it’s up to the legal system to first determine innocence or guilt. “I’m very aware of the reality that is domestic abuse in America and we do not condone it,” Cherif says. “However, we believe that the courts exist for a reason and anybody accused of anything is innocent until proven guilty. In the event that XXXTentacion or Kodak Black are proven guilty in the court of law, we won’t book them again. As of right now, we’re gonna let the courts do their thing.”

TOTALLY RIGHTEOUS San Jose rapper Righteous Reg lives a normal life while also fighting the good fight.

Regular Resistance EVERY TIME SAN Jose rapper Righteous Reg goes to 7-Eleven, he says he fears for his life. In his tracks, the outspoken artist wrangles with his reality of being young and black in a time when the news features men who look like him getting abused and killed on a frequent basis. “The scariest thing in the whole world is being in the line of fire of a policeman who is fearing for his life when I’m just living,” he says. “That fear is what fuels Righteous Reg.” Reg, who will be performing at Streetlight Records on Saturday, first became interested in making hip-hop while admiring the local battle rap circuit. Although he doesn’t engage in freestyle battles himself, the scene’s hard-cutting style seems to inform his uncompromising verses. Succinctly, on his most recent track, “That’s the Way,” the hook features the line “being black is dangerous,” over a looping, snarling guitar. Although there are many voices in “the resistance,” Reg sees himself as an on-the-street complement to the more visible activists—millionaire celebrities who speak out against injustice while often enjoying a remove from its most immediate effects. Plus, with the advent of social media, he can’t avoid viscerally witnessing brutality that might have been more abstract a decade ago.

“I don’t want to see people being slammed,” he said. “I don’t want to see people being shot. I don’t want to see any of it, but as soon as I hit the Twitter button, it’s there.” Obviously, Reg delves into other topics. Citing Nas as a major influence, he wants to be a rapper who is also a “poet and a storyteller.” Reg fits these labels. His songs relate anecdotes, stack rhymes and feature plenty of fun, boisterous braggadocio. And despite his frank raps, he’s not hopeless. On “K.I.M.,” he returns to a positive mantra: “keep it moving, we gon’ make it.” The one-time minister of a friend’s wedding, Reg sees his role as a rapper as akin to a clergyman—he speaks on the concerns of those like him, so they feel they have a voice and a companion in their struggle. “I’m regular guy,” he says. “I live like you do. I see the same things that you see. There’s so much going on every single day that I have to talk about it. Like, what else am I going to talk about?” —John Flynn

An older male friend keeps paying for me—buying me meals and clothes. Am I making a mistake in accepting? I’ve repeatedly made clear that I have no romantic interest in him. I’m a struggling artist, and he’s highly successful. We’re basically BFFs, talking and laughing every day. He occasionally jokes that I should be “giving up the sugar to the sugar daddy,” but I roll my eyes and say, “Hush!” I think he’s teasing me, but could he be playing the long game?—Worried Welcome to the “never say never” school of hope. There are some asymmetries between men and women in the effort required to get some action out of the opposite sex. Some men will engineer elaborate plots to try to wear a woman’s “nuh-uh, never gonna happen” into a “maybe just this once.” A woman, on the other hand, doesn’t have to plot. Assuming she’s reasonably attractive, she can probably just make extended eye contact with a man while eating a banana. This difference reflects what evolutionary psychologist David Buss explains as men’s and women’s conflicting evolutionary goals. It’s in a man’s evolutionary interest to, as they say, shoot and scoot (possibly passing on his genes without putting out any further time, energy or resources). However, because women can end up all “baby on board,” they evolved to look for emotional commitment and the ability and willingness to “provide.” (A woman’s psychological bottom line: “Can this wild man be turned into a minivan purchaser with a dad bod?”)

Buss notes that these sex differences in evolved mating psychology show up in the different ways men and women try to deceive each other. Scammy men tend to exaggerate their “resources” (probably a sizable chunk of the Ferrari rental business) in hopes of suckering the ladies into the sack. Scammy women, on the other hand, tend to feign “willingness to have sex in order to secure nonsexual resources”—as in, “Sorry, Bob. I had my knees welded shut recently. I guess I forgot to mention that. But thanks for the $300 dinner!” In your situation, however, nobody’s deceiving anybody. You’ve repeatedly made clear that there will be no sexcapades. He’s got an amusing dining companion and a dear friend. When we care about people, we do nice things for them. Sure, he’s probably still clinging to wisps of hope. But in time, he should accept that if the day comes when you suddenly grab him in your arms, it’ll be because he’s got a small piece of chicken caught in his windpipe and he’ll die unless you give him the Heimlich maneuver.

I’m a 28-year-old guy, and I read your column on how men and women are clueless about who’s supposed to pay and when. I’ve had dates be insulted when I wouldn’t take their money and others insulted when I did. Is there an optimal strategy for the first few dates?—Lost Meet the flexible feminist. Meanwhile, 39 percent of women wish men would reject their offer to pay—but 40 percent say it bothers them when men don’t accept their money. Argh, huh? Because female emotions evolved to push women to feel bad when they’re

with a man who shows no signs of being a “provider,” I think it’s wise for a guy to pick up the tab on the first few dates. The researchers concur, explaining that “men who fail to pay risk being viewed as lacking economic resources or as being uninterested, unchivalrous or—worse yet—cheap.” That said, your investment should be more symbolic than substantial, and you keep it that way by following my threepoint advice for the first few dates: Make them cheap, short and local. This means, for example, getting to know a woman over happy-hour drinks—as opposed to the kind poured by a sommelier (flanked by his two assistants) who comes to your table right after the team of loan officers helps you finalize your paperwork.

San Jose’s multi-dimensional muse comes to life for poetry fest BY GARY SINGH

ROM DAY ONE, San Jose has channeled a diverse set of muses via the written word, which is why History San Jose at Kelley Park seems like a perfect destination for the third annual San Jose Poetry Festival this weekend.

“The diversity of literary traditions [in San Jose] is remarkable,” says Robert Pesich, president of Poetry Center San Jose. “You have writers writing in Vietnamese traditions, Chinese, Hindi, people from Mexico, El Salvador, all coming together at times to share their work at various events. There’s a

tremendous richness and we’d like to see that cultivated and advanced in the context of the festival.” Poetry Center San Jose is headquartered in the Edwin Markham House at Kelley park. The house was Markham’s former residence at 432 S. 8th St., back in the late-1800s, when his poetry career was just starting to take off. At its current location, the house contains an exhibit of Markham’s possessions, artifacts and 1,000 poetry books donated over the years to the center. When the festival unfolds this weekend, poets from a wide variety of ethnic backgrounds will deliver the goods over two whole days, either via their own words or by giving provocative workshops. The sheer scope of prowess offered is unlike any poetry event in recent years, with

academics, local laureates, street-level heroes, Greek myths, video poetry and kuwentuhan (spoken story in the Philippine tradition) all contributing to a brilliant assemblage of events. Saturday features poets on the main stage along with a small press book fair. Workshops will unfold all day Sunday. The variety is impressive. The main stage will feature an array of opportunities for anyone even slightly interested in poetry: Chicano, Hindi and Middle Eastern poetry. Poetry by veterans, video poetry and haiku. Current Santa Clara County Poet Laureate Arlene Biala will deliver the keynote address. Several indie publications will comprise the small press fair, with San Jose State University commanding a serious presence, further evolving the campus’ relationship with the lit community at large. There is so much to choose from that people won’t know what to do with themselves. For example, on Sunday every single workshop offers something curious, creative and exploratory.

Barbara Jayne Reyes, whose new book Invocation to Daughters was recently published by City Lights in San Francisco, will lead a workshop on Kuwentuhan, a spontaneous talk-story project where participants explore the origins of story, as a concept, in their families and local venues. “What I want to hear from folks who attend is, where in their family gatherings, and in their community spaces, they heard story, who told story, and the structure of how the stories are told,” says Reyes, adding that tangents are often part of how we experience and relay stories. Other workshops include a session titled “The Uses of Myth,” by SJSU professor emeritus Nils Peterson, who co-founded the Poetry Center almost 40 years ago. In the workshop, Peterson will talk about the myth of Daedalus and Icarus and ways in which poets have used this story to express how they go about viewing the world. The class will then get a chance to explore the myth in their own writings. Deborah Miranda will lead a workshop titled “Composting Demons: Poetry in the Midst of the Zombie Apocalypse,” in which attendees learn how to transform their demons into a form of poetic compost, recycling their trauma into productive creativity. Yowza. Former Santa Clara County Poet Laureate David Perez will also appear, not once, but twice. On Saturday he teams up with Erica Goss and then on Sunday he delivers a composition workshop based on video poetry. “No matter how educated you are, no matter how much you like poetry, whether or not you are the kind of person who’s going to put on their smoking jacket and sit by the fire, read Shakespeare or whatever—you’re capable of writing a poem,” says Perez. As such, the festival gets bigger every year. There is absolutely nowhere to go but up. “It’s a young festival,” Pesich says. “It’ll go through various iterations as it finds its brand. I think it’s well on its way. It doesn’t take a genius to do the programming.”
