Not surprising at all. Have couple friends who work from them & no one has anything good to say. Micromanaging supervisors who treated their employees like reboots that’s just a little of the problem.

OK, so I didn't see you—but I wish I had. Driving home after working late Friday night I drove around the neighborhood looking for a parking spot. Thank god my car was small enough. I pulled off a superb parking job between a sedan and an SUV. I paid attention to the room each car had in order to pull out. I did wonder if maybe I should take photos of each license plate just in case. I didn't, but I should’ve! The next morning the SUV was gone and I found my driver's side windshield wiper arm bent so it wouldn't work. And it rained that day. What a pisser—but the main thing that upset me was that I didn't know who did it. The mystery stuck to me for half a day. Then I brightened up because I realized the kind of person that does such a thing—breaks the law, vandalizes but does it covertly—this is called a coward, a wuss. My educated guess is he also does drugs, flies off the handle easily, has few friends, and has criminal qualities. I guess I win no matter what you do. I hope you're a reader though, and read this. I personally fixed my wiper arm with pliers and elbow grease. The damn thing works better than ever now!

THE FLY
SVNEWS
Slanderista
When Voices-Morgan Hill charter school’s petition to stay open for another five years came up for a vote last month, Santa Clara County Board of Education trustee CLAUDIA ROSSI asked some tough questions. How much of the school’s budget was going to the charter management organization? Was the school inflating its student achievement data? Why does it pay teachers less than their public school counterparts? Though the board ultimately approved the charter’s renewal through 2023 in a 4-2 vote with Rossi and her colleague ANNA SONG opposing, Voices Executive Director FRANCES TESO isn’t ready to let bygones be bygones. In a letter dated Jan. 12, the charter school principal called They Rossi’s assertions Did slanderous and What? demanded that she SEND TIPS TO take back what she said FLY@ at the Dec. 13 board METRONEWS. meeting. Teso says COM she took time during the relative quiet of the holiday break to reflect on Rossi’s “false and defamatory statements” about test scores, teacher pay and management fees. “Your false statements served only to unnecessarily alarm parents and expose yourself to liability,” Teso wrote. “If even one student dis-enrolls from Voices or a new student chooses not to enroll in a Voices charter school, or one teacher chooses to leave our organization due to your false statements, Voices will have met the damages requirement in an action for defamation.” In other words, Teso is gearing up for a lawsuit. Rossi balked at the provocation, saying she fears it will have a chilling effect. “I don’t take back what I said,” she tells Fly. “But it’s upsetting to receive a threat.” Rossi says elected officials should feel free to ask difficult questions to make an informed vote. “If we’re now working under the fear of being sued by lobbies that are wealthy,” she says, “then that could really affect how we deliberate.”
PLAYTIME’S OVER Parents who spent years lobbying for a new playground at Baldwin Elementary School may lose access to it if the district closes the campus.
SCHOOL’S OUT
Oak Grove Unified may close four campuses, citing declining enrollment BY TORI TRUSCHEIT
J
ERMAIN MONTIEL grew up in south San Jose, so he was thrilled to send his kids to Baldwin Elementary in the Oak Grove school district. “You feel safe, it’s quiet and you don’t have to worry about hearing gunshots,” he says. Houses sell for over a million dollars in Baldwin’s zoned area and a new Costco just opened near Great Oaks Boulevard. “It’s a place where you want to raise your family.” But because of the district’s financial struggles, Baldwin is on the shortlist for closure next year, along with Del Roble, Glider and Miner elementary schools. The school board was
scheduled to hear public comment on the proposal Wednesday and make a decision by early March, using recommendations from a parent committee working through the winter to narrow down which schools should close. A neighborhood with milliondollar homes seems an unlikely candidate to lose its elementary school, but the district cited declining enrollment and insufficient state funding as prime causes. Baldwin, minutes away from the Santa Teresa Golf Club and the nearby foothills, could be the next casualty of the South Bay’s housing crisis. “It’s just too expensive in the area,” says Dominic Rizzi, a seventhand eighth-grade science teacher at Caroline Davis Intermediate School
and president of the Oak Grove Educators Association. Empty nesters stay in their homes indefinitely, watching the value of their homes soar, while young parents struggle to pay rent in the area and leave for cheaper areas. A Baldwin teacher who asked to remain anonymous has seen families move out of district to Hollister, Los Banos and Las Vegas this year to escape the housing crisis. To close the budget gap, Oak Grove, a preschool-through-eighth-grade district, tried to pass a $132 parcel tax in 2016, but it failed by 267 votes. “We have overlapping boundaries with [East Side Union High School District] and any time they try to pass a parcel tax, too, we’re asking for the same folks to contribute to us as well,” Rizzi says. Instead, the district is seeking ways to generate revenue, including choice programs to lure students from nearby districts, along with the state money that follows them. Another solution, renting out space in closed school buildings to private and charter schools, has Baldwin parents worried. “I can’t afford to send my children to private school,” Montiel says.
other entity now is going to use them?” In its final report, the committee listed “recent modernization investment” as a reason to keep the schools open, but some parents view the improvements more cynically. “The district sees the opportunity to make more money,” Montiel says. The impact of any school closure will hit families of color the hardest. The schools on the chopping block have four of the five highest percentages of students of color in the district. Ninety percent of students at Miner are of color, which includes 73 percent Latino students. “These particular schools being chosen to be closed is a form of systemic racism and discrimination, whether they’re aware of it or not,” says Roxana Marachi, education chair of the San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP. Mendoza, who is the parent representative for Baldwin Elementary on the committee, abstained from the Jan. 16 final vote in protest. “For communities of color, who are indirectly and directly told your whole life that you are dispensable, that you are movable, for those kids to be the ones to lose their neighborhood school sites, that’s horrible,” she says. Shaun Tanner, a white parent of three students at Del Roble, including one student of color, wanted the school to stay open. “We chose to be in Del Roble for a reason, because of the diversity of the school,” he says. He pointed to Oak Grove’s complicated busing system, which costs the district more than $1 million a year, as a reason that high-minority schools are up for closure. Students in the Coyote Creek corridor, east of Highway 101 and north of Silver Creek Valley Road, have been bused far across town to Baldwin and Santa Teresa for years, rather than attending nearby Christopher Elementary. “They should be attending Christopher, but residents over the years have threatened the district enough to force the district to send them to Baldwin and Santa Teresa,” Tanner says. With enrollment already declining, Oak Grove may be reluctant to alienate high-income white parents in Coyote, lest they pull their students and the money that comes with them. The district still lacks a long-term financial solution, either for declining enrollment or its financial struggles. “We can’t force parents to stay within the district,” Rizzi says.

He’s already seen two neighborhood schools fall victim to the district’s budget woes. In a round of school closures in 2004, Oak Grove shut down San Anselmo Elementary, near Baldwin. It’s now a private school run by a chain of schools called Stratford, which opened a school in Milpitas in 2016. Tuition for first through sixth grade is $18,200 a year. Stratford rents the building from Oak Grove, providing a source of revenue that the district says it needs to keep remaining campuses running. And just west of Baldwin, Blossom Valley Elementary was shut down and rented to Legacy Christian School, where elementary school tuition is $8,550. Stratford wouldn’t rule out opening another school in the area, especially because space for new campuses is at a premium in the Bay Area. “We’re always on the lookout,” says Kathleen Hawkins, a spokeswoman for Stratford schools. Rizzi fears that the district could also rent to a charter school, citing Rocketship, which operates 10 schools in San Jose, as a possibility. Typically, charter school teachers are not unionized, and rather than accepting all neighborhood students, most charters use lotteries and waitlists to manage admission. “It’s concerning for us to know that a school could be picked up by a charter,” he says. A spokesman for Rocketship say the network has no immediate plans to move into the area. “Whenever possible we build our own buildings, as we have for all 10 of our San Jose schools,” says Cheye Calvo, chief growth and community engagement officer at Rocketship. “Therefore it is unlikely we would be interested in renting space from Oak Grove. Our current growth plans focus on meeting parent demand in the East Bay.” Baldwin and Del Roble would be prime spots for rental because they’ve recently had physical upgrades. Baldwin’s $2 million in new bathrooms and a new playground came after parents lobbied for them, frustrated that the district—in another revenue-generating move—had rented space to a fee-based preschool. The preschool got priority use of inside bathrooms, sending Baldwin kindergartners on a trip outside to use bathrooms across campus. Margarita Mendoza, a Baldwin parent, fears their efforts were a waste. “These were taxpayer dollars,” she says. “These were facilities the school board voted for for district kids. And now some

SPECTERS & SPOOKS Sarah Winchester, played above by Helen Mirren, and her famous Mystery House are the subject of a new horror flick, ‘Winchester,’ due out Feb. 2.
Ghost Story
A new film about the Winchester Mystery House reminds us about the power of myth BY RICHARD VON BUSACK
T
HE FAMOUS WINCHESTER House stands as a contrast between the valley as it was—a place of delight, sure, then as now, if you have the money—and the latter-day Santa Clara County, in all of its incredible sprawl, where the hammering and sawing never stops.
At night, lit up, it draws people driving past on Winchester Boulevard with its potential for horror. The guides put you in a susceptible frame of mind as you climb the strangely angled stairs and walk the dim corridors. Since the reclusive Sarah Winchester’s demise of old age in 1922, the place has had an enthusiastically cultivated bad name. As early as 1939, the WPA Guide to California, an early tourism reference
book, described the mansion as “the externalization of a psychopathic mind.” After a few weeks of location work last year, the Spierig brothers— Daybreakers’ Peter and Michael, twin directors from Australia—have finished a feature film about our local portal into weirdness. “Insanity and blood” promise the advertisements, along with an A-list leading lady: Dame Helen Mirren as the wealthy Sarah Winchester. The film hasn’t been previewed for
the press. But in an email, Winchester scriptwriter Tom Vaughan describes the film in one word. “Tense,” he says. “The Spiriegs did their own draft of the script after me, and they did a beautiful job directing as well. There’s a prolonged tension through the whole film. One layer after another is revealed, both about the characters and the house itself.” There are some outlandishly fine Victorians in Melbourne—relics of the Australian gold rush, as described by Hal Porter in his memoir The Watcher on the Cast-Iron Balcony. After location work, the filmmakers went back Down Under to finish shooting the film. Producer Tim McGahan told of how the Mystery House on screen would be a combination of the real Winchester House in San Jose and multiple Victorian mansions in Australia. “We would walk in to some of the mansions on location scouts and find almost

almost identical servants’ quarters and kitchens to those in the Winchester House. It was uncanny. “The Winchester Mystery House poses certain challenges when shooting. Firstly, it is an active business and operating tourist attraction in its own right. Secondly, many of the rooms and corridors are far too small for a crew to access, or even for our actors to stand upright in. Sarah Winchester was only around 4 feet, 10 inches tall, and so it seems she only needed to build the house to accommodate her height. As part of the filmmaking process, we need to get cameras into all sorts of positions, as well as accommodate other production equipment. Some of the sets we built in Melbourne had to balance the scale of the house and rooms with filming practicalities. We created sets made up of intricate Tetristype puzzles that required assembling and disassembling, and the 12

ET READY FOR the second century of Winchester mythmaking as a new horror movie brands San Jose’s best-known tourist attraction as “the most haunted house in history.” The new claim will place it in such distinguished company as the Amityville House, the Villisca Ax Murder House, Southern Italy’s Castle of Otranto and the Overlook Hotel in Stephen King’s The Shining.
No proof is offered to support the boast, but hey, this is 2018. The throngs clomping through the twisted corridors of our city’s most infamous gift to popular culture will surely grow. Bigger than the crowd at the largest inauguration in history. The Winchester Mystery House won’t reveal its attendance, an order that comes “from up top,” according to spokesman Jake Williams. Ninetyfive years after Sarah Winchester’s death, her side project of a house— the shambolically designed 160-room Queen Anne Victorian whose actual name was Llanada Villa—draws eye
rolls from locals but continues to hoover tourism dollars. Williams helpfully offers that the annual visitor count is “in the six figures.” Which means that at $39 per adult ticket plus revenues from the gift shop, event rentals and film licensing, the top line is either in the mere millions or in the tens of millions. Team San Jose, the city’s visitors bureau, has no data either. A Ouija board might provide some answers. The county tax collector’s website reveals that the address pays about 30 grand a year in pre-Prop 13-pegged property taxes, which

TOURIST TRAP “On Amazon, someone called me a killjoy,” says Mary Jo Ignoffo, a history teacher at De Anza College and the author of the book Captive of the Labyrinth: Sarah Winchester, Heiress to the Rifle Fortune. Obviously, they have to have something to put on the poster, but would Ignoffo describe her subject’s life as a saga of blood and madness? “Nnnnnnno,” she says. “Blood, I don’t understand at all. Sarah Winchester has been accused of being insane a couple of times, historical evidence to the contrary.” Ignoffo’s study of Winchester
was piqued by the cache of some 20 years’ worth of correspondence Ignoffo discovered, letters between Winchester and her attorney. “One often hears that there’s nothing out there,” Ignoffo says, referring to an alleged dearth of historical records and primary documents concerning Winchester. “In fact, I was able to uncover hundreds of references from sources.” “Madwoman” is one way to describe Winchester, but that’s less easy to prove than another phrase: “Land baroness.” Winchester owned some very nice chunks of Santa Clara County, and areas beyond: 100 acres near San Francisco Airport, and 160 acres in San Jose around the house. Los Altos was her ranch. “When she sold it, the city of Los Altos was born,” Ignoffo notes. Ignoffo hadn’t visited the house before she started her study of Winchester. Like many locals, she’d drive past the mansion, convinced that it was for visiting out-of-towners. “I’d never been, which was funny, since people around the world want to

GHOST STORY
In this telling—one practiced by the very entertaining guides at the Mystery House— Winchester kept the construction going for decades, with workers devising baffling floor plans, doors to nowhere and zigzagging staircases. And there she languished for the rest of her life—the hammering and sawing only ceasing when she breathed her last. Except she wasn’t living at the Winchester House when she died. “The most important thing people don’t realize,” Ignoffo continues, “is TERRIFYING TEMBLOR Sarah Winchester that from the big boarded up much of her mansion earthquake in 1906 after the 1906 earthquake. to 1922 she lived in Atherton, despite the go there,” she says. “The convention and whole mythology of the building visitors bureau are bringing in tourists going on 24/7 until the day she by the busload. But the locals seem to died. Her place in Atherton is a roll their eyes—they’re not the first in very normal house—it was recently line to go see the house.” renovated and featured in a recent issue of Gentry magazine. Sarah’s attendant for 12 years described the Winchester House as a ‘hobby house.’” Winchester’s story is a twice-told tale The big quake of 1906 hit the great in this area. Sarah Pardee was a wellWinchester house hard, leaving it born and well-educated Connecticut maimed and unfinished. To save it lady, the daughter of an affluent from the elements, Winchester had carriage manufacturer. Her marriage portions sealed off; hence the staircases to William Winchester was considered to nowhere, the sealed corridors. As for a love match, but tragic losses followed the conical turret where the guides to it. When Sarah Winchester was 26, her the house tell you she had her séances, only child, Anne, some 5 weeks old, there’s no proof that it’s more prone perished of the wasting disease known to paranormal activity than anywhere as marasmus. Less than 15 years later, else in the place. There’s no evidence for a lot of went to a Boston medium. With all of things the guides tell you.” the grief over Civil War deaths, it must As for the séances: “I discovered have been lush times for psychics. PERFECT SCAPEGOAT The myth about the mansion—that it was haunted by ghosts of those killed by the Winchester rifle— continues to find resonance today.
the night in the Winchester house, if she was so very convinced that the place wasn’t crawling with furious ghosts. “No. My first thought is that it would be cold. There’s nothing insulating the walls.”
THE REAL WINCHESTER Given the sketchy evidence that she was in communication with the afterlife, there are some exculpatory circumstances that would make such spiritualism almost mainstream. Winchester was indeed part of an era when it seemed as if the next world was just out of reach. Locally, Jane Stanford, wife of Leland, was using spiritualism to try to contact the dead son whom the Palo Alto university memorializes. Even men as scientifically minded as Sir Arthur Conan Doyle believed that new technology was going to allow us to witness and photograph the spirits of the dead. Consider the inventions of the time, such as the telephone (Winchester was one of the first in the San Jose area to have one)—here was technology in an era when tech was indistinguishable from magic. But Winchester is remembered as the creator of the spidery house, instead of as a philanthropist who endowed a lung-disease hospital. She spent her last dozen or so years setting up an endowment for the Winchester
Chest Hospital in New Haven, today administered by Yale. “Her financial dealings in the last decade don’t reflect someone who was crazy or insane,” Ignoffo argues. “They’re detailed, closely analyzed. She protected her finances in order to fund this hospital.” As for Winchester the movie, Ignoffo isn’t going to be first in line to see it. “I wouldn’t rush out. I have trouble with the horror genre.” Still, she has hopes. “I’m the first person who officially suggested Sarah Winchester was a sane person. I hope the movie depicts her like that, and I hope someone eventually makes a historical drama.” Winchester’s story has been featured on various local and syndicated shows, and Ignoffo was a guest on the ‘Winchester’ episode of William Shatner’s Weird or Not? (“I was the ‘not,’” Ignoffo jokes.) The people at the mansion would love to have a biographical film produced, and they would show it. Her story needs a filmmaker. I have all the documentation ready.” Fortunately for Winchester’s fans, Winchester screenwriter Vaughan is an admirer of the industrious widow. “She was way ahead of her time. An independent spirit who had the money to back it up. I can only imagine how many people she drove

HAUNTED HOUSES Still, there is a mystery that goes far beyond the supposed haunting of the Winchester House: what curdled the reputation of these great houses? Movie watchers know that something turns a house bad. Perhaps they can go bad on their own. Maybe the most perfectly written summing-up of this kind of madness is Shirley Jackson’s opening for her 1959 novel The Haunting of Hill House. “No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.” “Not sane”—a whispery, gentle kind of description for a house gone bad. But every haunted mansion started out benign, a showplace. “Solid black walnut every inch of it—balustrades and all. Sixty thousand dollars worth o’ carved woodwork in the house! Like water! Spent money like water! Always did! Still do! Like water. Gosh knows where it all comes from.” Such are the trappings of the great house in the script of Orson Welles’ The Magnificent Ambersons (1942). The fall of the house of Amberson is due to the
invention of the automobile—the factories building them pollute the area and allow commuters to come into the city from the outskirts. The Ambersons’ manor becomes ghostly because the neighborhood values crash. Without being a conventional horror story, Ambersons explains as well as any movie the process of how these wooden castles, these ultimate marks of status, ended up as the kind of edifice you advertise on billboards with skulls on them. Hopefully the upcoming Winchester will provide some invigorating fear, and burnish the local legend a bit. But maybe the ghosts in the Winchester House are due to an uneasy feeling, as per the folk belief put into words by Honore de Balzac: “Behind every great fortune is a great crime.” Ignoffo concludes: “Well, I have a theory about Sarah herself. I theorize that if she had inherited her wealth from something that wasn’t guns—say, the Singer sewing machine—that there still might be stories of garment workers haunting the place. But the house is a symbol of our ambivalence and conflict about guns. While there’s no evidence Sarah Winchester felt any conflicts about it, I think people’s discomfort about the Winchester house reflects the Civil War, the way Native Americans were treated, and urban gun violence today. It’s easier to consider this as the place built by guilt over guns than to have some kind of meaningful dialogue about guns.” Producer McGahan notes, “Some might take the view that the success of the Winchester Repeating Arms Co. ultimately existed at the expense of many lives. Regardless of whether or not you believe in ghosts or ‘haunted’ houses, my take on the story is that the ghosts are a representation of Sarah's own guilt and torment due to the loss of so many lives at the hands of the rifles.” Winchester screenwriter Vaughan suggests that the very opulence of the place may have seemed to later observers as decadence. “I couldn’t say for sure,” he says, “but there does seem to be this sense that the resources required to build and maintain these structures might have been better used elsewhere. There’s an empty sadness to them now, isn’t there? It feels like a haunting is exactly what they deserve!”

crazy because she refused to play society’s games. That’s enough to start a lot of nasty rumors all over town alone. The more you learn about her, the more compelling she becomes. If our mythology is people’s gateway into her story, I’m totally OK with that. I’m just gratified she’s getting the attention she deserves.” Winchester’s producer Tim McGahan comments, “There are many theories about Sarah Winchester, but little verified information about her true personality. I personally think Sarah Winchester was an incredible woman, well ahead of her time, intelligent, generous to her staff and a wonderfully creative architect.”

PAST, PRESENT, FUTURE The iconic Century 21 dome, above, can be seen from The Winchester Mystery House—as can Splunk, right, a cloud services and software company. wouldn’t cover the rent on a onebedroom apartment across the street at Santana Row. Last Sunday’s tours were overbooked and running 20 minutes late. A white-haired man bumped from one slot tried to jump the line for the next one and challenged a parent holding a toddler at the front of the line to “take it outside” when he didn’t get his way. Good thing the rifles handed to guests for the $40 souvenir green screen photos weren’t loaded; tempers run hot in January. Just months after Sarah Winchester’s death in 1922, her niece sold the house for $135,000 to a real estate investor who leased it for 10 years to John and Mamie Brown. The Browns moved onto the property in 1923 and within five months of Winchester’s death commercialized the house as a roadside attraction. The following year, Harry Houdini visited the odd mansion.
The newspaper clipping about his visit called it the “Mystery House.” Winchester’s supposed dalliances with spiritualists were crafted into a narrative about the supernatural. Winchester’s fruit orchards were, over time, developed into a few billion dollars’ worth of real estate: a multi-dome cinema complex, the Westfield Valley Fair shopping center and the Town & Country Village shopping center, which was razed and replaced by Santana Row. Cinema operator Ray Syufy built the Century 21 Cinedome on land leased from Brown family heirs. The introduction was likely made by a Syufy architect, noted modernist Vincent G. Raney, who married the Browns’ daughter. The Century 21 theater that opened in 1964 became a prototype for the later free-standing cinema domes, likely including the iconic Hollywood one.
Director Steven Spielberg was a senior at Saratoga High School when Century 21 opened, and he watched films at the recently demolished Century 25 on Saratoga Avenue; Ralph McQuarrie’s spaceship in the Spielberg movie E.T., some observe, resembles the illuminated domes. For many years the biggest mystery was who owned the Winchester Mystery House. In 1987, the San Jose Mercury News outed Monte Sereno resident Ray Farris II, a Brown family member, as a principal. The Merc was not kind to Farris, reporting on slip-ups at his nursing homes as well as his arrest in Los Gatos for laying hands on a 9-year-old who upset his corgi and bichon frise dogs. No longer flying under the radar, 40 members of the old money Raney and Farris families were listed as signatories to letters in 2013 and 2014 that appealed for permission to tear
down the “obsolete” cinema domes to make way for an “urban village” as part of a Santana Row expansion. They were only partially successful. The three domes still stand and the Century 21 was deemed eligible for preservation on the National Register of Historic Places. It’s a fenced car park presently for Stevens Creek auto dealers, so the sold-out Winchester movie opening happens this week across the street at Santana Row’s CineArts theater. The Mystery House is making the most of it, meanwhile, screening trailers for the movie at the end of its tours. Its fast-cut editing and screams of terror will leave an imprint on the collective psyche—plan to hug your kids at bedtime if they see the movie—further monetizing a cheezy yarn that birthed one of the valley’s biggest real estate plays, and now a major motion picture.

Not many contemporary artists can channel the essence of early ’80s pop like Mexico City’s audiovisual production and performance duo Shiro Schwarz. Together since 2011, Pammela Rojas and Rafael Marfil have been offering audiences an immersive, extrasensory experience for more than half a decade. The two are known for pairing 64 bit-inspired, hallucinogenic visuals with the electric pulse of disco to produce a quirky, genre-defying aesthetic. Matching familiar synth melodies to the clap of gated-reverb—as they do on “Together”—the pair have proved adept at whipping up a nostalgic boogie. (SP)

BUCKSKIN Artist Kohei Nawa’s ‘PixCell-Maral Deer,’ on display in his ‘Trans-figure’ collection at Pace Gallery in Palo Alto.
Transformer
Japanese artist gives found objects new skin in ‘Trans-figure’ collection BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR
A
N ANIMAL GLITTERS in the artificial light at the center of the gallery. Immobile, it stands almost 10 feet tall, 4 feet of which are antlers. Hundreds of round glass beads encase it in a clear, protective coat.
Up close, they look like crystal balls of varying sizes that have been affixed in a precise design. Through these prismatic lenses, you can make out the coarse, finely preserved hairs on the body of a taxidermied deer. PixCell-Maral Deer is the finest example of organic materials colliding
with inorganic ones in Kohei Nawa’s “Trans-figure” at Pace Palo Alto. According to the gallery’s director, Justine Chausson, Nawa, a Japanese artist based in Kyoto, bought the already dead deer on eBay. He’s applied the same technique—creating a second skin—to other once-living things also on display, including a penguin and a tiny, yellow duckling that’s full of pathos. It should be swimming with its mother and siblings instead of standing on dry land encrusted in glass barnacles. In the largest room of the gallery, however, Nawa changes his approach and coats a small village of found objects in polyurethane foam. In Villus, the artist has arranged a
group of items—the largest at the back of the room, the smallest at the front— and placed them on square, white, waist-high pillars. The foam deforms everything there with curdled growths that look like hardened cottage cheese. A hand grenade, a folded wheelchair, a bonsai, a bull’s skull, a rubber ducky; they all appear to be suffering from an unhealthy bloat. Nawa has transformed them into spectral outlines of their former selves. A life-size ram, probably not a real one, retains its original shape. As treated, though, it becomes something else now that its off-white wool is sealed inside an artificial shell. The artist is also experimenting with another textural element in the room. He casts colored LED lights down onto the sculpture. They’re programmed cyclically, to hold on the objects for a minute or two before changing color, and then stopping on them once again. One set of colors, yellow, green and pink, added another visual dimension to the piece, as if you were suddenly looking at it through 3-D glasses. The other combinations of colors didn’t add much to the experience, besides making for a pretty light show.
Other objects in the backroom appear in a third treatment, made of silicon carbonate particles. A toy bear’s head and a toy bunny are coal black, but they also sparkle with silver flecks of aluminum powder. Glass, foam and silicon—much of the exhibit is concerned with layers of synthetic skin. Villus's is static and cold. You don’t want to touch anything. With the inclusion of a Mario brother and other toys, it drifts into whimsy (“It's a Small World” wouldn't be out of place if there were a soundtrack playing). Without the lights, the objects just stand blankly on their pedestals without much to say. It’s like looking into an empty mirror. Nothing is reflected back at you. In comparison, the towering deer and the duckling that could fit in the palm of your hand still contain the animals’ souls. Or, rather, the artist has restored the soul to its owner by giving it a second skin. Nawa’s practice ranges wider than this one subject. His website (kohei-nawa.net) lists at least a dozen categories in which he’s classified his work. This is his first solo show in the U.S. and, as such, really only serves to introduce him here. “Trans-figure” also includes a series of paintings titled Direction. He paints them at an angle with monochromatic straight lines. They’re less inviting than Piet Mondrian’s warm geometry. But online, Nawa demonstrates the process of making them. The camera follows the slow drip of his thick, inky paints. His approach is meticulous and painstaking, but an interesting method doesn't necessarily guarantee an interesting result. There's something both ugly and beautiful about the deer and the duckling. It feels like Nawa is breaking some taboo by repurposing the dead to serve his art. You can find more of those contradictions on his website than in the gallery, and they're worth seeking out. Especially the ones where the paint oozes outside the lines. His work is disciplined enough to withstand, and benefit from, occasional doses of confusion and disorder.

FREAKY FELINE ‘The (Anti) Valentine Show’ returns to Works/San José with art like ‘Love Cat <3’ by Mark Martinez.
A Valentine Vaccine
FOR MARK MARTINEZ, a San Jose-based artist, Valentine’s Day is just another Hallmark holiday dreamed up to sell candy and canned greeting cards. Every February, he finds himself wondering about those who don’t have a perfect relationship and challenges the definition of love. “For a lot of people it’s almost like a fantasy,” Martinez says, noting that unrequited love is a serious bummer. “When one person is in love with somebody, that love is actually not a real thing.” Opening on Friday and running through “The (Anti) Feb. 18, “The (Anti) Valentine Show” will be Valentine Show” showcasing the work of 150 local artists who have created pieces around themes such as anti-love, Feb 2-18 anti-hypocrisy, anti-commercialization and antiWorks/San José, objectification. The word “anti” is in parentheses San Jose to indicate that artists are welcome to represent a workssanjose.org positive side of Valentine’s Day if they wish. “This is a show that we’ve done a few times before,” says Joe Miller, president of Works/San José, the downtown gallery hosting the show. “We’ve done it about every other year, and each time it’s been an open call. Anybody who wants to bring in a piece can be in the exhibition.” Works/San José first introduced the show to the community eight years ago. The inspiration, according to Miller, was to present an alternative view to Valentine’s Day. Organizers felt that it was important to show the other side and highlight the feelings of people who feel unloved or anxious about the holiday. Since then, the show has almost doubled in size. Most of the artists are San Jose locals who are well known around the community. Many have showcased their work in other exhibits in San Jose, but there are also a few first-timers. Mark Martinez will be returning this year with a piece titled Love Cat <3. He has been creating art for about six years now. His work is mainly inspired by cats; this one has an Alice in Wonderland vibe. In vivid colors, the cat sits up on a tree, mesmerized by love—with hearts in his eyes and teeth. The feline bears a striking resemblance to the Cheshire Cat. Just like the world of the film, love is nothing more than just a fantasy. —Jaleny Reyes

The fest runs Feb. 27-Mar. 11, bringing actors Andie MacDowell of Groundhog Day, John Travolta, William H. Macy, Charlie Sheen, Turner Classic Movies historian Ben Mankiewicz, Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany, and the rising star Tom Cullen—of both Downton Abbey and the British movie Weekend.
These are the names as of now. As February unfolds up to the Cinequest opening date, there will be others, including the screenwriters who’ll be turning up on the “From Script to Screen” presentations. Last year’s fest had its glitches—VR that sometimes wasn’t real enough, for example. Many faced problems crossing the valley to Redwood City, where a portion of the festival was held as a result of the closure of the Camera 12 in downtown San Jose. Cinequest is returning to the Century Downtown 20, located far, far away in San Mateo County. But this year, since 3Below is open, the Camera 3 is more or less back from the grave;
the California Theater is open for the bigger-scale productions, and the Hammer Theater is ready for more intimate, shot-on-digital work. Opening night is Macy’s new directorial effort, Krystal; Macy, who won the fest’s 2003 Maverick Spirit Award, directs another MSA winner: Rosario Dawson. In the title role, the sultry yet nerdy Dawson plays a hard-luck stripper sought by a naive young man (Nick Robinson of Jurassic World). Closing night is Paul Sanchez’s Brothers in Arms, a documentary about the making of Platoon, the much Oscarlauded 1986 Vietnam film directed by a veteran of that conflict, Oliver Stone. “Prairie Madness” took its toll on settlers who tried to colonize the Great Plains states—from the Dakotas to Texas, European arrivals were driven to suicide or insanity by the howling winds. This nervous condition was the kind of bad news that land offices tried to hush up, to keep from discouraging more immigrant farmers moving in. Texas-born writer and professor Dorothy Scarborough wrote a supernaturally-tinged novel about how

the desolation was particularly hard on women. She published anonymously, at least in part because she worried about reprisals for describing the hardscrabble life in farm towns the 1880s. The film of her novel is 1928’s The Wind, by the brilliant Swedish director Victor Sjostrom (auteur of the still-best film version of The Scarlet Letter). Lillian Gish is a lone woman driven to hysteria by the dust storms. It’s very infrequently revived, likely because it’s frightening, and nigh-impossible to find on home viewing; it screens at the California Theatre on March 9 with master organist Dennis James at the Wurlitzer. Almost 100 premieres are happening at the fest, including the Kaiser Thrive award winner Pick of the Litter, by Dana Nachman and Don Hardy, the directors of Witch Hunt and Batkid Begins. It’s a sort of reality show in which the winning puppy out of a pack of five will become a guide dog. Fans of Battle of the Sexes might be lured to Borg/ McEnroe about the rivalry between two of the 1970s’ best tennis players, John McEnroe (Shia LaBeouf ) and Bjorn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason). Ashram stars renowned character actress Melissa Leo and Kal Penn, best known for the Harold and Kumar series, in a thriller that explores the underside of a charismatic guru’s meditation center. Michelle Pfeiffer stars in the drama Where is Kyra? In a piece that seems to have the same outline as the Sam Elliott-starring Hero, Burt Reynolds is the lead in The Last Movie Star. The Czech film Barefoot is about a country boy relocated to Prague during World War II; it’s directed by the Oscarwinning Jan Sverak (Kolya). And the eclectic Brad Anderson, who once upon a time brought his first film, The Darien Gap, to Cinequest before going on to better-known work, such as the excellent Transsiberian, returns with the Rosamund Pike and Jon Hamm thriller Beirut. Eleven nightly VIP soirees at downtown restaurants, followed by no-host Maverick Meetups: “If you don’t like the movie, at least you’ll like the after-movie drinks” has been a longstanding unofficial motto of the festival.

GOING SOLO In her one-woman show, ‘Latin Standards,’ Marga Gomez remembers the music and cultural contributions of her father, Willy Chevalier.
Father Dearest
Marga Gomez pays tribute to her father in one-woman show, ‘Latin Standards’ BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR
M
ARGA GOMEZ WAS out of breath when she arrived outside the Brava Theater Center on her Razor scooter. The comedian and raconteur was in the midst of a successful three-week run of Latin Standards, her latest, and possibly last, solo play. She was revving up for the closing weekend in San Francisco, looking forward to her three days with the show at San Jose’s MACLA in February and waiting for an email to confirm a
return engagement to Brava in March (she received the confirmation later that afternoon). We sat down in the empty cabaret room where two lonely palm trees, made of green and gold tinsel, sparkled against a black backdrop. With Gomez not on stage, the trees looked like they were wilting and in need of the turgor pressure her charismatic stage presence provides. Latin Standards is her second solo play that attempts to reckon her personal reminiscences of her dad alongside his legacy as a songwriter of Latino hits in the 1950s and ’60s. Gomez says the difference between
that first show, A Line Around The Block from 1996, is the wisdom she’s gained after 20 years. “He was a little mythic in the first show. It was like, ‘This is the man I saw,’ but this show is like, ‘This is the man I am.’” This Freudian slip—she doesn’t say, “This is the man he was”—indicates not only how much she admired him and, as an adult, emulated his desire to make it as an entertainer. It’s also a sign that she’s learned how to inhabit his ghost. But not in a mournful way. She learned how to use humor from her parents, who deployed levity as a shield against hardship. “Although they had glory days, their youth was pretty traumatic,” Gomez says. “But they always used humor. Even my mother, who wasn't a comedian, had a very mean sense of humor.” Some of the jokes in Latin Standards tease out the details of her parents’ turbulent 12-year marriage. One of Willy Chevalier’s songs (her father’s stage name) will play in the background while Gomez excavates their meaning. There’s Tito Puente’s
recording of “De Me Para Ti” and Trio Los Condes’ rendition of “En El Último Escalón,” which concludes bitterly, “Porque vas a conocer a el diablo (Because you’re going to meet the devil)”. While the focus of this show is on her father, her mother was the subject of her very first play, Memory Tricks. In telling their stories Gomez approaches with respect. “They were influencers of their time in the Latino community,” she says. “My perspective was to tell stories that weren't told about Latino heroes in culture and entertainment but who are still heroes.” She also wanted to make it simpler than the 1996 show. “This is really compressed, in and out of the best day ever with my father.” That best day, when Gomez was a girl, she accompanies her father to a meeting at an advertising agency. Chevalier’s going to pitch a radio commercial campaign to a coffee maker. Because of his late nights at clubs and theaters, he never woke up before 3pm. He asks his daughter to wake him up early, at noon. She agrees on one condition—that he take her with him to the meeting. The story reveals the depths of her affection for him, especially when she speaks in his voice, adopting both his posture and affect. But she’s able to balance a child’s sentimental image of her late father with an unsentimental sense of humor about his foibles and flaws. Gomez also teaches solo performance. She works with students who have "tapped into something, into the truth. I don't care if someone is a polished performer, if they're clunky. I'm more interested in the story they're telling and if they have the ability to take notes and do rewrites. Some people are just all there and they want to just get more out of it and hone it and cut the excess.” For anyone interested in learning how to translate personal memories onto the stage, Latin Standards is a master class.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY
By ROB BREZSNY week of January 31
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In his "Crazy Lake
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): Stories have the power to either dampen or mobilize your life energy. I hope that in the coming weeks, you will make heroic efforts to seek out the latter and avoid the former. Now is a crucial time to treat yourself to stories that will jolt you out of your habitual responses and inspire you to take long-postponed actions and awaken the sleeping parts of your soul. And that's just half of your assignment, dear Taurus. Here's the rest: Tell stories that help you remember the totality of who you are, and that inspire your listeners to remember the totality of who they are.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In 1989, a man
have mined about 182,000 tons of gold. Best estimates suggest there are still 35 billion tons of gold buried in the earth, but the remaining riches will be more difficult to find and collect than what we've already gotten. We need better technology. If I had to say who would be the entrepreneurs and inventors best qualified to lead the quest, my choice would be members of the Aries tribe. For the foreseeable future, you people will have extra skill at excavating hidden treasure and gathering resources that are hard to access.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Author Anaïs Nin said, "There are two ways to reach me: by way of kisses or by way of the imagination. But there is a hierarchy: the kisses alone don't work." For two reasons, Anaïs's formulation is especially apropos for you right now. First, you should not allow yourself to be seduced, tempted, or won over by sweet gestures alone. You must insist on sweet gestures that are synergized by a sense of wonder and an appreciation of your unique beauty. Second, you should adopt the same approach for those you want to seduce, tempt, or win over: sweet gestures seasoned with wonder and an appreciation of their unique beauty. CANCER (June 21-July 22): Are you more inclined
right now to favor temporary involvements and short-term promises? Or would you consider making brave commitments that lead you deeper into the Great Mystery? Given the upcoming astrological omens, I vote for the latter. Here's another pair of questions for you, Cancerian. Are you inclined to meander from commotion to commotion without any game plan? Or might you invoke the magic necessary to get involved with high-quality collaborations? I'm hoping you'll opt for the latter. (P.S. The near future will be prime time for you to swear a sacred oath or two.)
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): In March 1996, a man
burst into the studio of radio station Star FM in Wanganui, New Zealand. He took the manager hostage and issued a single demand: that the dj play a recording of the Muppet song "The Rainbow Connection," as sung by the puppet Kermit the Frog. Fortunately, police intervened quickly, no one was hurt, and the kidnapper was jailed. In bringing this to your attention, Leo, I am certainly not suggesting that you imitate the kidnapper. Please don't break the law or threaten anyone with harm. On the other hand, I do urge you to take dramatic, innovative action to fulfill one of your very specific desires.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Many varieties of the
nettle plant will sting you if you touch the leaves and stems. Their hairs are like hypodermic needles that inject your skin with a blend of irritant chemicals. And yet nettle is also an herb with numerous medicinal properties. It can provide relief for allergies, arthritis, joint pain, and urinary problems. That's why Shakespeare invoked the nettle as a metaphor in his play Henry IV, Part 1: "Out of this nettle, danger, we pluck this flower, safety," says the character named Hotspur. In accordance with the astrological omens, Virgo, I choose the nettle as your power metaphor for the first three weeks of February.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Knullrufs is a Swedish
word that refers to what your hair looks like after sex: tousled, rumpled, disordered. If I'm reading the astrological omens correctly, you should experience more knullrufs than usual in the coming weeks. You're in a phase when you need and deserve extra pleasure and delight, especially the kind that rearranges your attitudes as well as your coiffure. You have license to exceed your normal quotas of ravenousness and rowdiness.
Experiment" documented on Youtube, Harvard physicist Greg Kestin takes a raft out on a lake. He drops a tablespoon of olive oil into the water, and a few minutes later, the half-acre around his boat is still and smooth. All the small waves have disappeared. He proceeds to explain the science behind the calming effect produced by a tiny amount of oil. I suspect that you will have a metaphorically comparable power in the next two weeks, Scorpio. What's your version of the olive oil? Your poise? Your graciousness? Your tolerance? Your insight into human nature?
spent four dollars on a painting at a flea market in Adamstown, Pennsylvania. He didn't care much for the actual image, which was a boring country scene, but he thought he could use the frame. Upon returning home, he found a document concealed behind the painting. It turned out to be a rare old copy of America's Declaration of Independence, originally created in 1776. He eventually sold it for $2.42 million. I doubt that you will experience anything quite as spectacular in the coming weeks, Sagittarius. But I do suspect you will find something valuable where you don't expect it, or develop a connection with something that's better than you imagined it would be.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): In the 1740s, a
teenage Capricorn girl named Eliza Lucas almost single-handedly introduced a new crop into American agriculture: indigo, a plant used as a dye for textiles. In South Carolina, where she managed her father's farm, indigo ultimately became the second-most-important cash crop over the next 30 years. I have astrological reasons to believe that you are now in a phase when you could likewise make innovations that will have long-range economic repercussions. Be alert for good intuitions and promising opportunities to increase your wealth.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): When I was in my
early twenties, I smoked marijuana now and then. I liked it. It made me feel good and inspired my creativity and roused spiritual visions. But I reconsidered my use after encountering pagan magician Isaac Bonewits. He didn't have a moral objection to cannabis use, but believed it withered one's willpower and diminished one's determination to transform one's life for the better. For a year, I meditated on and experimented with his hypothesis. I found it to be true, at least for me. I haven't smoked since. My purpose in bringing this up is not to advise you about your relationship to drugs, but rather to urge you to question whether there are influences in your life that wither your willpower and diminish your determination to transform your life for the better. Now is an excellent time to examine this issue.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Would you like to shed unwieldy baggage before moving on to your next big challenge? I hope so. It will purge your soul of karmic sludge. It will prime you for a fresh start. One way to accomplish this bravery is to confess your sins and ask for forgiveness in front of a mirror. Here are data to consider. Is there anyone you know who would not give you a good character reference? Have you ever committed a seriously unethical act? Have you revealed information that was told to you in confidence? While under the influence of intoxicants or bad ideas, have you done things you're ashamed of? I'm not saying you're more guilty of these things than the rest of us; it's just that now is your special time to seek redemption. WRITE AWAY The Chiang Mai Writers Club and Wine Bar features a display of antique typewriters and old black-and-white photos of newsrooms, among other literary ephemera.
At home abroad Finding literary inspiration at the Chiang Mai Writers Club BY GARY SINGH
L
AST WEEK, the anti-manabout-town returned to a literary vortex of major influence. Eight years ago in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I discovered a place on Rachadamnoen Road inside the central area of town. The Chiang Mai Writers Club and Wine Bar was right down the street from the Phra Singh Temple.
Bob Tilley, a retired journalist from the UK, owned the place, along with his wife, Tong, and it functioned as the unofficial English-speaking foreign
correspondents club of Chiang Mai. Every possible demographic of expat writer might be found inside. A lonesome traveling screenwriter might show up to get drunk in the corner, a journalist might pop in after filing a story, or someone may just be looking for other writers to drink with. The phrase, “you never know who you’ll meet” rang true. On the day I arrived in 2010, an antique Underwood typewriter sat on the bar. Old black-and-white photos from newsrooms of decades past hung from the walls, each inside an ancient dusty frame. Antique glass cases held fading encyclopedias,
books, magazines and other literary ephemera you’d expect a lifelong worldly writer to collect. It also seemed like English-speaking travelers often came in and left gifts. It was that kind of place. As I sat there, Tilley told me numerous stories about life as a correspondent stationed in East Germany during the Cold War. With 50 years of experiences under his belt, Tilley had serious yarns to tell, some of which jammed a small book that he sold me for seven bucks. He was a living connection to the “old days” of freelance stringing, with hundreds of assignments—some legit, others dubious—taking him all over the underbelly of various European cities and then finally Thailand. He illuminated what it was like to exist as a freelancer, writing for both upmarket and downmarket publications, supermarket gossip rags or academic journals—for whoever would write the damn checks. Such was (and is) the mercenary life of a freelancer. You

straddle many different crowds of people without ever feeling truly at home in any one of them. Which is exactly how I started years ago, so Tilley became not just an inspiration, but a beacon of assurance that a shred of the freelance journalist’s life was still imaginable for me somehow, at least in theory. He told me to never give up. If you have to write for salacious outlets just to pay the bills, then do so, but don’t quit trying. I was so inspired that I wrote a column about Tilley on the flight back. Sadly, Tilley passed away a few years ago, so I never got to hang with him again, but last week when I showed up, Tong was still there. The place did not look much different. The same photos and furniture were present. The menu hadn’t changed. The antique typewriter now sat like royalty on top of an old cabinet in the back corner, right next to an old communist-era dial telephone from Hungary. A maroon fez sat on top of the typewriter. A Thierry Henri soccer jersey and a San Francisco Giants pennant hung on the wall behind them. The spirit of Bob Tilley was still palpable. The entire place was filled up with Western tourists, with no natives anywhere. As I ate my meal at a twoseater table, it only took five minutes for a tipsy Australian to walk over from the bar, and then while standing there looking down at me, bash everything that Donald Trump is all about. How could millions of people vote for this immoral degenerate piece of narcissistic garbage, he asked, eyes bugging out. The rest of the world is scared at how a dangerously illiterate lunatic could be the American president, he blurted. Calm as a monk, I agreed, adding that apologizing for Donald Trump is part of any international travel itinerary for Americans these days. Unfortunately. Hammered Australians are ubiquitous in Thailand, so this was no big deal, really. After my meal, I bid everyone adieu and wandered back onto Rachadamnoen Road. As before, Chiang Mai was alive. Almost every single block seemed to feature bars, backpacker hostels, massage joints, artisan shops, tour companies, scooter rentals, street food carts, laundry services, beautifully crumbling ambience and very old Lanna-style Buddhist temples. Tilley made the right choice by moving here. I vowed to return.

WOMBO COMBO The chicken, beef and lamb at Diwan Al Falafel are 100 percent Halal.
Taking it to the Street
S
AMPLING LOCAL STREET food is a must while traveling abroad. One of the most vivid memories I have of visiting the Middle East involves eating my way through Jordan. I must have noshed at a half-dozen shawarma and falafel stands throughout the capital city of Amman. I can still recall the hypnotic effect of the giant hunks of mystery meat turning on a spit. That memory sprang to the forefront of my mind as I entered Diwan Al Falafel and saw the familiar blocks of meat, spinning round and round. I was greeted by a smiling, mustached man welding a giant carving knife; chef Mohammed Afif—who has 40 years of cooking experience—gave us the rundown of the menu. Fortunately, no mystery meat here, as they only serve 100 percent certified Halal meat, which comes in either chicken or their beef-and-lamb mix. I almost went with a traditional wrap, but decided that I’d rather have a combination plate to sample as much as possible. While not officially on the menu, a chicken, beef and lamb combo ($14.99) is available, if you ask. I also ordered up a side of their namesake falafel ($4.99/six pieces) to see if they were worthy. The word huge doesn’t do the combo plate justice, as they really pack as much food as humanly possible onto the dish. The juicy and seared meat is served atop a bed of fluffy and tasty turmeric rice. The plate also comes with a side of hummus, pita bread and a cucumber-and-tomato salad that reminded me of a fattoush, minus the bread. The entire dish was very enjoyable, but I’d have to give the edge to the chicken shawarma over the beef and lamb, as it had a slightly better flavor. The hummus was also delightfully creamy, well-flavored and I must commend them on actually using a good quality extra virgin olive oil with it, as a lot of other establishments usually use a much lighter—and flavorless—oil. As for the eponymous falafel, they indeed were worthy of the name; crunchy, moist and packed with flavor. These might just be the best falafel I’ve ever tasted—outside of mom’s kitchen, of course. I could have eaten them alone, but I couldn’t resist dipping them into the hummus. Foreign food carts aren’t in everyone’s future or past, so it’s nice to be able to get a taste of the street—sans street. Mystery meat need not apply. —John Dyke

LINE ’EM UP Project Pasta combines Italian food into the world of assembly line fast-casual dining.
Penne Delightful
T
HE TERM “CHIPOTLE-IZATION” has become synonymous in the food world for any fast-casual restaurant that features an assembly line method for producing a diner’s order. I believe Subway and Henry Ford might take umbrage with the term, but that’s an argument for another day. This technique has been used to assemble everything from burritos and pizzas to poke and salads. The one cuisine I have not heard of until this point is pasta.
This is where Project Pasta comes into the picture, as they're taking the assembly line and giving it an Italian twist. I will admit that when I first heard about this I did a bit of an eye roll. However, I always try to keep an open mind and, after our visit, I must say my cohorts and I walked away very impressed. The statement, “I’ll definitely be back” was uttered several times. But, I'm getting ahead of myself. Let's start at the beginning of the line, shall we? As with all these establishments, there are hard decisions to be made before one can enjoy their repast: such as what type of pasta (spaghetti, farfalle or penne): which sauce (marinara, pesto or Alfredo); what sorts of toppings (11 different veggies) and, most important, what type of meat (meatballs, chicken, sausage and bacon are all available) will be involved. Of course, for those that are indecisive, Project Pasta does have preset house combos available. My associates weren't in the mood for making decisions, as they both settled on the Great White ($10) preset, which comes with a combo of Alfredo and pesto sauce, penne, spinach, mushrooms and chicken. My custom order featured penne, marinara, sausage, beef meatballs, bacon and a multitude of veggies ($11). After it’s ordered, the concoction is cooked up in a frying pan and whipped into one homogenous amalgamation. Their sauces might be their strongest attribute. The marinara was smooth, a bit herby and had that slight sweetness a good traditional tomato sauce needs. I also stole a bite, or two, of my colleague’s white pesto and it too was deliciously creamy and well-flavored. The veggies were all fresh, and—while all the meats were good—the edge goes to the sausage as it had a nice, subtle smokiness to it. We all agreed that adding shrimp to the menu would go a long way toward pasta perfection. The Chipotle-zation of America isn’t slowing down any time soon, but if the future holds more establishments like Project Pasta, count me in for the revolution. —John Dyke
