Power Trip Sure, I get it, private property rights are real. But people take videos at Google’s campus all the time. Is it really that big of a deal to take some footage in front of a visitor’s office? Snapping photos of my car license plate and state ID was so extra. Apparently some security guards are in the business just to intimidate people. If you’re itching to fight crime, why don’t you join the police force and address real threats? Sincerely, Don’t Trip Over Gray Areas

THE FLY
Dual or Die
The South Bay Labor Council (SBLC) has unveiled a list of preferred candidates in some of the more consequential local races. DON ROCHA and DOMINIC CASERTA split an endorsement in the Santa Clara County supervisor’s race. Labor’s picks in San Jose: Vice Mayor MAGDALENA CARRASCO, downtown Councilman RAUL PERALEZ, SHAY FRANCO-CLAUSEN and MAYA ESPARZA. But there was no public announcement about the contest between five-term Sheriff LAURIE SMITH and her former second-in-command, retired Undersheriff JOHN HIROKAWA. Sources say that’s because labor leaders were none too thrilled They with delegates’ vote for Did a shared endorsement, What? which meant affiliate unions could make their SEND TIPS TO FLY@ own decision about METRONEWS. whom to back but COM that neither candidate would benefit from SBLC’s unlimited spending power in the June 5 race. But the only union with the clout to overturn the decision was the one with the most members—SEIU Local 521. And that’s exactly what happened. The union on Monday announced its sole endorsement for Smith, making a bid to unseat her that much more of an uphill battle. It wasn’t a membership vote, as Hirokawa’s camp was quick to point out before going so far as to accuse the sheriff of “1990s era bullying tactics.” “When you have someone who’s been that entangled in the political scene here for 20 years, you know that’s because they’re accustomed to making these types of tradeoffs,” Hirokawa campaign manager JEFFREY CARDENAS says. Smith didn’t return Fly’s requests for comment. The most recent news from the incumbent’s side came in a press release last week about her getting official backing from the union repping her jail deputies. Hirokawa says he’s not surprised. “We do have a philosophical difference,” he says of the jail union. “I am pro-independent oversight and no on Tasers in the jails, which they feel are necessary.”

Bitcoin boosters find new disciples at South Bay meetups
Will cryptocurrencies reach their full potential? Almost certainly not, but that’s not a question to be answered for many years. The question on folks’ minds at the Sunnyvale meetup: Will this make me rich? After what I saw that night, I wouldn’t bet on it.
BY JOHN FLYNN
Betting on bitcoin
B
RYAN BARTON stormed onstage at a bitcoin meetup in Sunnyvale to tell roughly 200 people about his upcoming Save Bitcoin Rally. What does bitcoin, the wildly disruptive value transfer revolution, need to be saved from? The BitLicense, for one, which only allows companies approved by the state of New York to traffic in cryptocurrency, a crushing blow to the libertarian ideals of the earliest adopters. In his speech at the Feb. 13 gathering, Barton targeted former Assemblyman Matt Dababneh, a Los Angeles Democrat who proposed bringing the licensing requirement to California.
“There was a female lobbyist. [Dababneh] pushed her into the bathroom and he pumped and dumped all over her,” Barton said of allegations, disputed by Dababneh, that he masturbated in front of the cornered lobbyist. “He ended up resigning in disgrace, but that wasn’t the worst thing he did. The worst thing he did was try to introduce the BitLicense into the state of California.” Barton wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the logo of the Silk Road, an online black market where bitcoin first gained traction, thanks to its untraceable, pseudonymous nature. Since then, bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies have seen a meteoric rise culminating with a single bitcoin exchanging for nearly $20,000 in mid-December— an astonishing feat for an exchange medium created practically out of thin air by a creator nobody knows.
The crypto klatch took place at the Plug and Play Tech Center, a startup accelerator where they’ve reserved parking spaces for “venture capital investors” 20 feet away from a massive brass statue of Siddhartha. It doesn’t seem there’s any irony intended. Inside, the walls bear posters recognizing the tech center’s most successful companies, including—and I swear I didn’t make these up—Health Gorilla, Fog Logic and Credit Sesame. The hallway features the signatures of big investors. And within these walls, there’s a sea of cubicles dedicated to the creation of startups that do who-knowswhat. But there’s also representation from universities like MIT and major companies like Goodyear and Nintendo. On one wall, there’s a photo of a young Barack Obama speaking here. Upstairs, there are about 20 boxes of pizza and five metal bins of beer and soft drinks on ice, provided free
Mine to Keep Ed Zitron, the founder of EZPR, owns several cryptocurrency mining rigs, the loud, expensive supercomputers that pull coins from the digital ether by solving math problems. Despite his foray into mining, Zitron thinks bitcoin, and, frankly, America’s whole investment system, is a bit of a crapshoot. “There’s nothing to know with bitcoin,” he say. “There has never been. And let's be honest, does any stock really follow much logic?” Zitron got into mining by leveraging some bitcoin he nabbed at a low price years ago. And as opposed to just buying the coins online, mining gives him some security because he consistently gets more coins even if their values fluctuate. But he’s only put in money he says he can afford to lose. And despite his mockery of the loonier trends of cryptocurrency, he feels for the people who just want to make a quick buck in tough times. “Our target of success is so much lower now,” says Zitron, who thinks of buying cryptocurrencies as little more than glorified gambling. “I believe most people’s base is that they’re just surviving. So they see this asset that’s apparently going through the roof. And they don’t want to be left behind.” Enrique Pumar, chairman of the sociology department at Santa Clara University, notes a variety of factors that could push people to engage in riskier investments in the current economic climate: mounting debt, smaller pensions, slow wage growth and a lack of investing savvy. With all this uncertainty, it’s no wonder that some people have tossed their money at something that promises to make them rich quick and improve the world. And don’t get it twisted, cryptocurrencies were and are a tremendous opportunity to make money. After the meetup, I wander the nearly empty facility, staring at hundreds of cubicles underneath dozens of signs bearing the logos of startups. There’s no guarantee they’ll make it. Just like most of us have no guarantee we’ll get a raise, a promotion or even a job that will pay us as long as we need money. With most of America facing a steep uphill climb to financial security, it’s hard to blame folks for investigating a shortcut. “They just wanted a chance at a better life,” Zitron says. “On one hand, you could say it’s risky. And it absolutely was. ... It’s not smart. But it’s human.”
9 MARCH 14-20, 2018 | metrosiliconvalley.com | sanjose.com | metroactive.com
to the attendees, who are people of all races and ages, though the gender ratio tilted masculine. By the end of the two hours, all the refreshments had been consumed. Over a slice of pizza, Fernando Serrano says he bought his first cryptocoin last October—in time for the big rise, but also for the subsequent fall. I asked how the experience has been. “It sucks,” he acknowledges, but he thinks it’ll be “good” again by the end of the year. Serrano compares cryptocurrency and the blockchain to the internet, which also had its skeptics in the beginning but made trillions for early adopters. He also thinks cryptocurrency will gain holds in India and China and that one coin, Ripple (a BitLicense holder), is going to be worth a lot. I nod and drink a free beer, which convinces me he’s talking a bit of sense. The next speakers shatter that notion. After Barton’s tirade came Ami Lebendiker from Mango Startups, which plans to offer Mango tokens to investors in his index fund comprising up to 24 firms in Latin America. When asked how he’ll choose these companies, he says they’ll all go through startup accelerators and that he’ll “try to pick the winners.” And like any super-not-suspicious financial scheme, those who buy Mango tokens early will get a 33 percent bonus—the only fact from the presentation that the man next to me wrote down. This essentially un-vettable pitch raises my eyebrows. But the third speaker drops my jaw. He is an exceedingly earnest middle-aged man who introduces himself only as “Alex.” He speaks with an unidentifiable accent and wears a pressed plaid shirt tucked into pleated khakis hemmed neatly above well-used running shoes. Alex pitches his Money Abundance Project. To paraphrase, he say that if you’re not wealthy, it’s your own fault. And so, Alex promises to make you richer through a series of 50-minute phone calls where he’ll enlighten you with his personalized money-making method. In exchange, you pay him a minimum of $8 per session. He claims it has already brought success to four clients, including himself, and that his method “always works,” so long as the person is willing to accept his solutions. Alex must figure the meeting is rife with marks.

Building Blocks Blockchain, the technology behind everything from cryptocurrency to CryptoKitties, isn’t crazy— it’s going to change the world BY TOMEK MACKOWIAK
E
VEN THE MOST charismatic heros are destined to be supplanted by their more stable, if droll, contemporaries. This seems to be hard-boiled into our human destiny. Agamemnon and Achilles were replaced by their less flamboyant counterpart, Odysseus; the fiery promise of fossil-fuel technologies are now being phased out by the boring, reliable and simple electric motor. It’s the same play being performed on different stages with a different cast. In that vein, one of the most recent dramas can be seen in the spectacular rise and fall of Bitcoin. If you’ve been following Bitcoin over the past six months, it may feel like like the hero is now stumbling down a dark alley—clutching a mortal wound and too preoccupied with applying pressure to see all the “dead end” signs. There are certainly some bitcoin investors feeling that way. Stories abound of people taking out high-interest loans and second mortgages to get in on what was sold as a once-in-a-lifetime investment opportunity toward the end of 2017. Those unfortunate souls pumped
untold billions of dollars into the trending cryptocurrency by purchasing bitcoin tokens. In January 2017, this was an industry valued at over $830 billion. Ten days later, that number dropped over $360 billion, and nobody knows why. Now, as the predicted crashes in bitcoin’s value are manifesting, all may seem lost. But like any good drama, there’s a twist. It appears that bitcoin was not the star after all. It is its underlying technology— something known as the
blockchain—that deserves attention. The blockchain is the ledger system that makes bitcoin such a powerful idea. In addition to its influence on global finance, blockchain promises to upend everything from accounting and project management, to cybersecurity and the insurance industry—and everyone, from your neighbor to the Chinese government seems to be involved, somehow.
BLOCKS ’N’ BITS The blockchain is a distributed ledger—similar to the kind the accounting department at work uses to track incoming and outgoing expenses. Originally, ledgers were kept in actual books, then they moved to computer programs like Excel and Quickbooks. Then the internet came along. The blockchain is an electronic ledger that lives on multiple servers all over the globe. These ledgers are open to anyone and, because of this, it is difficult to change any data recorded on the blockchain—or cook the books, as they say—without raising red flags.
Every server carries the full ledger, so there is no central authority managing the chain. Because it is not tied to a state government, the blockchain is ideal for facilitating crossborder trade—both as a means of tracking the movement of goods and services, and as a platform upon which to build a cryptocurrency, like Bitcoin. Bitcoin is known as a cryptocurrency because it draws its inherent value from a cryptographic algorithm. An individual bitcoin is essentially the solution to a complex math problem. There are a finite number of solutions to be drawn from the bitcoin algorithm, and solving these problems involves serious computing power. As such, those who use their own machines to solve these equations— miners—are rewarded with bitcoins or other digital tokens for their solutions. This incentivizes the mining process and encourages more people to join the system. For true believers, bitcoin represents the first sparks of a global revolution that will democratize wealth, the internet and society as a whole. In theory, the underlying

PRECIOUS KITTY CryptoKitties, which sell for big bucks and use blockchain technology, may seem ridiculous... But, then again, Beanie Babies played a major role in kickstarting eBay.
technology that bitcoin uses to store its data—the blockchain—has the power to decentralize all online information, storing it in cryptic jumbles across the hard drives of millions of computer users, freeing us from the tightening grip of greedy banks, monopolizing tech giants and overeager governments. Still, skeptics see little more than a bubble fueled by wild, irrational speculation and hucksters pushing get-rich-quick schemes. At the moment, it would seem that the bitcoin skeptics have been vindicated. The cryptocurrency was exchanging
for nearly $20,000 on Dec. 16, an astonishing feat for a value system created practically out of thin air. Since then, the price has tumbled, dipping below $7,000 in early February. It currently sits at $9,282. It’s doubtful that number will be current by the time you pick up this paper or read this article online. But whatever blockchain’s value at the end of any given day, one thing is certain: a global system that verifies transactions through a distributed, decentralized network—one that is internally incentivized to be fast and accurate—is incredibly valuable.
That’s because the majority of our lives have to do with verified or verifiable data, whether that information lives in a formal ledger or exists as an informal tally in our heads. Beyond all our financial transactions, there’s our energy and data usage, our communications, time spent on jobs and countless other exchanges that happen explicitly or in the background of our lives. That’s why the topic of blockchain and its many uses kept popping up at China’s biggest political event last week (the National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political
Consultative Conference). Outside of food, shelter and water, accounting is the other major necessity of modern humans. It’s vastly more significant than any other technology we possess. In fact, all other technologies begin with an attempt to increase accounting efficiencies. A few examples include the internet, banking, trade, metallurgy and roads.

BLOCK TALK The blockchain is a ‘distributed ledger’ aimed at increasing the transparency and accuracy of everything from cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, to cyber security, project management and insurance. absolutely smitten with its potential. Instant auditability, legal proof, contract verification and an immutable audit trail are just some of the buzzy catchphrases accountants mutter in their sleep. Blockchain promises to make their vet dreams a reality. This is why Josh McIver decided to start ULedger—a blockchain-based accounting company—instead of continuing with the so-called Big Four (Deloitte, PwC, EY, KPMG). That’s understandable. If Robin Hood ever got his hands on a rifle, he’d probably put his bow and quiver down, too. McIver is certain that the technology he and his team are developing will become the future of enterprise auditing. According to McIver, his technology “helps companies assert and prove the integrity of their data.” That’s no small feat. Today that proof of integrity is the responsibility of hundreds of thousands of accountants. ULedger promises efficiency, auditability, legal proof of
contractual obligations and immutable audit trails so “anytime that a company has data that needs to be proven in some manner, or when other people make decisions based on that data, they can use ULedger to authenticate or certify the integrity of that data.” Right now, the city of Boise, Idaho, is using the technology to help streamline utility payment responsibilities between home buyers and sellers, a once-tedious task that tied up valuable city resources. There are thousands of blockchain applications in the works. Most of them are built using Ethereum (a foundational blockchain technology that simplifies the development of how the blockchain stores data). All of them promise to change the world. The majority will disappear into the ether (or ETH, which is what the Ethereum token is called), but some will endure and persist. It’s difficult to wade through the white noise. It helps to have a guide.

If you don’t have the patience to dig through all the pre-sales and initial coin offerings (ICOs), find a Groshong to help you understand what does what and how. According to the expert, this next generation of blockchain companies affect a broad spectrum of markets. Get comfy; this ride will take you from banking, through alternative energy and end with a digital feline that’s worth as much as a stake in a hypercar (the rarest and most expensive of super cars).

everyone knows that sustainable sources such as solar, wind and hydro are the way to go. That’s where Dan Bates and Impact PPA comes in. Bates is a veteran of renewable energy and a pioneer in blockchain. His idea is simple: He installs solar and wind farms around the world and lets people buy the power they need. He’s installed his power plants in 35 countries. So, why is Bates investing in developing a blockchain technology and token? Most notably, he works in troubled, developing locations. The “PPA” in Impact PPA stands for “power purchase agreement.” Bates wants everyone to have the ability to invest in the empowerment of disenfranchised peoples across the globe. Traditionally, the financing of power grids has been the responsibility of the government. But what if there is no local government that can finance that? Sure, we have global banking institutions that can handle that, but Bates’ question is: “How do you get over that financial [and bureaucratic] bottleneck, which is presented by the likes of the nongovernmental organizations out there, or the World Bank, USAID, Power Africa?” The way to solve that, according to Bates, is to get a group of manufacturers, installers and local leaders to commit to a PPA and sell the tokens on the blockchain to people who Bates thinks are, “interested in social good, they’re interested in the effects of climate change, and how to mitigate those effects and want to put their money into something that will have a positive impact on the planet.” As with all blockchain technologies, those who invest early will have the greatest potential for profit. Impact PPA’s power token is called GEN, it allows people who live around Impact PPA’s power stations to buy as much energy as they need. The MPQ token pays for building the renewable energy power plants and lets anyone around the globe invest. Bates’ team is currently rebuilding the west coast of Haiti. The first of 42 cities is Les Irois. He’s doing this even if no one buys his blockchain token. Bates hopes to accelerate global access to renewable energy through the blockchain’s ability to let people invest in a transparent way.

HOT COMMODITY As of press time, the most expensive CryptoKitty for sale is this dragon-cat hybrid, worth more than $500,000.
FUNNY MONEY Collectible. Breedable. Adorable. Start meow! When you develop a blockchain technology you really want adoptability, scalability and value. That means your technology is easily used, by a lot of people, who will pay a lot for it. As tempting as instant auditability, reliable verification of contracts and global deployment of community-funded renewable energy sound … who doesn’t like cats? CryptoKitties are digital cats that straddle a version of the blockchain that contains all their digital kitty DNA. Owners store their binary felines in digital wallets, like any other cryptocurrency, but they can also breed their kitties with others. That’s how new kitties are released. When CryptoKitties
breed, their DNA is mixed to produce the new generation block and that is added to the blockchain. You purchase CryptoKitties with Ether (ETH). Normal kitties will set you back fractions of one token, where as the exclusive varieties can cost several hundred tokens. As Ether hovers around $700 a token, the asking price of some CryptoKitties can reach north of $535,000 (that’s almost a studio apartment in San Jose). For those who are tired of traditional methods of earning enough money to live in Silicon Valley, like inventing the next disruptive technology or becoming the head of a cartel, CryptoKitties may provide a reasonable way to maintain some degree of stability. If kitties aren’t your thing, and you prefer something more stable and

realistic like a hyper-car (a very rare super car), check out Bitcar where you can buy a part of something like a Bugatti Chiron. Not only will you be able to chuckle confidently at the schmuck pulling up in the Lamborghini Gallardo, but you can also sleep safely in the knowledge that your hard-earned cash is safe, somewhere where the Chiron is garaged, in Dubai or Doha or Vladivostok or Tokyo maybe. Anyway, wherever it is, as long as your wallet is safe and secure, it’s basically in there.
CRYPTO CRITICS One of the most visible thought leaders involved with bitcoin and blockchain is Roger Ver. He’s an early adopter of bitcoin, and very influential in the space. Bitcoin has made Ver very wealthy, but he’s not satisfied with what the Bitcoin Core technology has become. “By the end of the year, Bitcoin Core will no longer be the dominant crypto,” is a prediction of Ver’s that seems to be coming to fruition. He has led a push to redefine bitcoin’s functionality and structure to improve what he feels are shortcomings that should have been fixed years ago. He wants to increase transaction speed, lower transaction costs and continue what he believes are the core duties of bitcoin: a way of reliably sending money, peer to peer, quickly, cheaply and with a good amount of anonymity. Around Aug. 1, everyone holding Bitcoin Core (BTC) in their digital wallets received an equivalent amount of Bitcoin Cash (BCH), a new cryptocurrency that continues what Ver and other early bitcoin adopters feel is the original mission of bitcoin. This has earned Roger a place among the most influential voices around. His battle cry, “#BitcoinCash is what I started working on in 2011: a store of value AND means of exchange,” is an echo of what Gavin Andresen (one of the first developers of Bitcoin Core) said in 2010. The two carry a lot of influence, which has propagated Bitcoin Cash across the globe. Right now the biggest problem with Bitcoin Core (the original iteration of bitcoin) is that it’s not only slow and expensive, it’s incredibly volatile. A solution to the volatility problem is Kowala (KUSD)
a token that’s fast and cheap that is pegged to the U.S. dollar. Why would someone want a cryptocurrency that always equals the dollar when dollars already exist? To simplify the cryptocurrency process for users. “Our mission statement is to remove the obstacles to mass adoption,” Kowala co-founder Eiland Glover says. Removing volatility, expense and latency is certainly an improvement over Bitcoin Core, but where is the sweet payoff for eager investors looking for rapid tenfold returns? At face value, this just sounds like a good way to pay for products and services with a decentralized token. Who wants that? It turns out that a lot of people want that. The search for a reliable and stable cryptocurrency is still on. It’s what Bitcoin Core was supposed to be before things got out of hand. Kowala’s team has developed a unique algorithm that serves as its backbone. To maintain an equivalent value to the dollar, Kowala’s system either mints or purchases and destroys KUSD tokens. Investors can purchase a part of the network and its mining ability by purchasing MUSD tokens. The constant minting or destruction of tokens ensures that KUSD is secured by the value of work being done on the network. Every transaction pays a small fee to the verifying miner, and that fee across all transactions is the work that stabilizes the system. It’s as if your sweat and toil was the stabilizing factor for the currency in which you’re paid. What’s exciting is that anyone can create their own token and design their own blockchain, and anyone can invest during the early stages for very little. New blockchain technologies are funded by presales and initial coin offerings (ICOs) that are open to the public. The winning technologies will pay exponential dividends to their early investors. Just like in the dot-com days, you can employ a Wall Street trader or a local fortune teller to find the best use of the technology; either one will be just as good. Just don’t get roped in like the suckers in the late ’90s who bought pieces of a Beanie Baby trading site or invested in a server made of Legos. Just kidding. That was eBay and Google. An inside look at San Jose politics

BY THE NUMBERS
$5,400
The typical San Jose homeowner stands to lose about $5,400 in deductions this year under the recent Republican-led overhaul of the federal tax code, according to a new report by Apartment List. The projected loss over the course of a threedecade mortgage? About $114,000.
$100,000
The new federal
legislation hits hardest in expensive coastal markets like the Bay Area, where homeowners in the nine-county region could lose upward of $100,000 in housingrelated tax benefits over the course of a 30-year mortgage.
NO CONTEST The 65th mayor of San Jose faces nothing but token opponents in the June primary.
Mayor Sam Liccardo a Shoo-In for Re-election BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH The deadline to jump in the San Jose mayor’s race closed Friday with no realistic challengers for Sam Liccardo, who’s now on a glide path to re-election. A rumored run by labor-aligned Santa Clara County Supervisor Cindy Chavez never transpired. “Although I believe our mayor can and should do more,” she said, “I believe that we can accomplish more by working together.” Liccardo said he can’t speak for whatever organized labor saw in their polling to make their decision, but that he sees the lack of a major opponent as proof of the progress he’s made. “We’ve got plenty more work to do, though,” he said. The only other people seeking city’s highest office are relative unknowns. There’s the arguably homophobic Steve Brown, who lost to Councilman Sergio Jimenez in the 2016 District 2 race after facing backlash for suggesting that businesses should have the right to refuse service to gay customers.
He’s joined in the contest by political neophytes QuangMinh Pham, a Vietnamese refugee and retired doctor, and Tyrone Wade, who in 2014 lost his bid for the District 1 seat against Councilman Chappie Jones. Two councilors are unopposed— Jones and Raul Peralez in downtown’s District 3, which spans the western part of the city. The only open seat is, of course, one of the most crowded with six people vying to succeed terming-out District 9 Councilman Don Rocha. Shay Franco-Clausen won support from labor, while Pam Foley was endorsed by the Silicon Valley Organization— the chamber by another name. Kalen Gallagher and Sabuhi Siddique also put their names in the running against Scott Nelson and Rosie Zepeda. A lot’s at stake in D9, where labor has had a reliable vote from Rocha and business will be pouring money into Foley’s campaign in a bid to shift the balance of power on the council
toward Liccardo. “There’s a lot of pressure representing the working-class community,” says Franco-Clausen, the only openly gay woman of color to run for city office. “I do feel it.” One of the most vulnerable incumbents this year is District 7 Councilman Tam Nguyen, who has often cast the critical swing vote. He lacks support from both labor and business because of his unpredictability. Six contenders will try to unseat him come the June 5 primary—labor-backed Maya Esparza, chamber-endorsed Thomas Duong, Chris Le, Van Le, Omar Vasquez and Jonathan Fleming. Former state Assemblywoman Nora Campos apparently decided against trying to take back her old District 5 seat from Vice Mayor Magdalena Carrasco, who beat Campos’ little brother Xavier Campos in his 2014 re-election bid. Carrasco’s only opponents this year are neighborhood activist Danny Garza and PR director Jennifer Imhoff.

The number of predominantly left-leaning states, including California, in which the median homeowner will get at least $100 less in housing tax deductions under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. The Apartment List study says the impact of the tax law is closely linked to the 2016 election and that it’s no coincidence that none of those states voted for President Donald Trump.
57%
The overall percentage of Santa Clara County residents who own a home, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. That’s nearly 7 percentage points below the national average, thanks to the region’s historic affordability crisis. For white residents, it’s 66 percent, 33 percent for African Americans and 39 percent for Latinos. In past decades, federal subsidies and incentives encouraged homeownership, but the new tax law changes course and may drag down ownership rates, which are already hovering around a 50-year low.

Thu, 8pm, $20 The Improv, San Jose
The Pace Gallery in Palo Alto hosts its first solo exhibition with Evolution, a collection of unique videos, prints and photographs dedicated to the pioneering audiovisual artist Michal Rovner. Nilus, a central part of Rovner’s showcase, employs two screens to project a ghostly silhouette of a jackal sprawled out over two pages of an open book— each mark a tiny impression of a human profile spread out like words in a story. The piece encapsulates Rovner’s innovative aesthetic, and the body of work on display highlights an experienced artist, deep into her successful career. Show runs through Apr 15. (SP)
We know how it goes. Payday is a ways off, but your friends are making plans to eat tonight. Don’t miss out—just commandeer the group text and drive the party to SoFA Market. Participating vendors at the downtown food court now offer $3 Thursday deals on the third Thursday of every month. Grab a sweet treat at Milk and Wood, a slice at Pizzetta 408, some fresh fish at Hawaiian Poke Bowl or a tasty sammie at Toasted Craft Sandwiches. Wash it all down with a Blonde Ale by Baja Brewing Co. or turn it up with some kamikaze shots at the Fountainhead Bar. (SM)
With a bubbly laugh that recalls Family Guy character Cleveland and a look reminiscent of Johnny Depp's cringeworthy portrayal of Willy Wonka, Nick Guerra brings his newest material to San Jose this weekend. A former contestant of NBC’s Last Comic Standing, Guerra is touring behind the release of his first comedy album, Love: The Nick’s Tape. Although small in stature, the comedian has won audiences over with his energetic and quirky persona. He has been featured on Comedy Central and has worked with comedians such as Gabriel Iglesias and Jo Koy. He performs through Sunday. (SM)
COWBOY VERSUS SAMURAI Thu, 8pm, $10 The Pear Theatre, Mountain View Written by Michael Golamco, this edgy comedy centers on Travis, a Korean-American English teacher living in a small Wyoming town who must compete with a handsome white gym teacher for the affection of his new colleague: an Asian American woman who is only attracted to white men. The ensuing battle is less about her and more about American identity. Based on Cyrano de Bergerac by Edmond Rostand, Cowboy Versus Samurai is much more than your average romcom. This elaborate homage is a sharp social commentary that explores interracial dating, sex and the personal struggle of double consciousness. (SP)

GROUND DOWN In Dominique Morisseau’s ‘Skeleton Crew,’ a small contingent of auto workers deal with the pressure of the recession.
The Boneyard
TheatreWorks Silicon Valley’s production of ‘Skeleton Crew’ a well-oiled machine BY JEFFREY EDALATPOUR
E
VERY MORNING, DEZ (Christian Thompson) changes out of his red and black high-top kicks—replacing them with a pair of work boots at the automobile factory where he works. As he puts them away in his locker, he checks for smudge marks then wipes them off with his thumb.
His co-worker Shanita (Tristan Cunningham) brings in a giant bottle of ranch dressing and writes her name on it before she places it on a shelf in the breakroom fridge. She’s visibly pregnant, and although she denies it, the dressing
must be satisfying one of her hunger cravings. Faye (Margo Hall), who’s worked at the factory for almost 30 years, is still sneaking cigarettes despite everyone’s urging her to quit. In a lesser production of Dominique Morisseau’s Skeleton Crew, these idiosyncrasies could come across as quirky, or worse, provide the actors with an excuse to overemphasize their characters’ individuality. Instead, these details inspire fully-formed and lived-in performances by the entire cast of this TheatreWorks Silicon Valley production, now playing at the Lucie Stern Theatre. And, under Jade King Carroll’s steady direction, the actors achieved a kind of harmony that’s rare. Audiences
who attend the play in Palo Alto are benefitting from its run earlier this year at the Marin Theatre Company, which co-produced the drama. Three months in and, like the cars Dez, Shanita and Faye are assembling, Skeleton Crew is a dynamic, well-oiled machine. Morisseau sets the play in only one place—the workers’ breakroom—and yet, the production never feels confined. Scenic designer Ed Haynes lends the atmosphere an authentic feeling of decay by rounding up an ancient microwave and refrigerator, rusting lockers and a patched-up sofa. During the entr’actes, the projections designer, Mike Post, casts black-and-white images of cars being built on old factory lines. Because the images get abstracted when they’re projected against the entire set, they become menacing. Especially when paired with an instrumental soundtrack that groans and whirrs—the sounds of a mechanized society grinding itself down. In this room, in fleeting respites from their daily, Sisyphean tasks, the three union co-workers and, from time to time, their foreman Reggie (Lance Gardner) drink coffee and gossip about each other and the job.
The central conflict begins when Reggie confesses to Faye that the factory is due to close at the end of the year. Their relationship is complicated. Faye is not only the union steward; she was also his late mother’s best friend. Faye’s loyalties are divided between the workers she represents and the man she considers to be, if not a son, then like family. On the verge of retirement herself, she’s torn about trusting Reggie to fight for their jobs. In 2017, Margo Hall was in top form as a goddess made human in Marcus Gardley’s black odyssey (Cal Shakes), and as a movie star slumming it for the sake of art in Robert O’Hara’s Barbecue (SF Playhouse). But as Faye, Hall is commanding in a quieter way. The role itself is not showy. Morriseau knows how to imply melodrama without typing it out verbatim in the script. Faye is level-headed, but she’s had some tough breaks and made some serious mistakes. Hall’s imagination lights up the stage with her version of a proud, occasionally unlucky, yet ultimately shrewd woman like Faye. Thompson and Cunningham are also terrific as Dez and Shanita, respectively. They flirt and circle each other reluctantly, both at first unsure of their feelings for each other. Cunningham, in particular, delivers her lines with an unexpected lyricism. Somehow, in the midst of all this decline, the actress finds poetry in her character’s ability to love. As the foreman caught between management and his employees, Gardner constructs Reggie from equal parts frustration, rage and vulnerability. Skeleton Crew takes place in Detroit at the beginning of the recession in 2008. As the auto industry fell apart, so did the city. The playwright references abandoned buildings and neighborhoods, and the attendant rise in crime. These three factory workers are barely hanging on, but it’s not just their livelihoods that depend on the place staying open. The plant—and all the others like it— is the backbone of Detroit’s economy. Once it collapses, the city, already in a state of disrepair, will too.

BAD VIBRATIONS Mrs. Which, played by Oprah Winfrey, dishes out rote life lessons in ‘A Wrinkle in Time.’
Wrinkles
Day-glo girl-power platitudes fall flat in Disney adaptation of ‘A Wrinkle in Time’ BY RICHARD VON BUSACK
F
OUR YEARS AGO, Dr. Alex Murry (Chris Pine) vanished in a bizarre physics accident—as the mighty blue Tick noted, “Science is not an exact science.” Heroine of A Wrinkle in Time Meg (Storm Reid, decked out with a pair of glasses and a flannel shirt meant to make her look plain) is consoled in her fatherlessness by her indifferently drawn mother (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and her brilliant little brother Charles Wallace (Deric McCabe). Director Ava DuVernay shoots the early scenes in L.A.’s West Adams,
a picturesque old neighborhood architecturally similar to Highland Park. The movie is getting on its feet when the supernatural emerges: first, a home invasion by Mrs. Whatsit (Reese Witherspoon) to announce that news of Meg’s plight has been received by her space sisters. She is joined by the quiltcovered Mrs. Who—sadly, no relation to The Doctor (Mindy Kaling). And then comes the arrival of the large-andin-charge Mrs. Which (Oprah Winfrey). The three teach Meg how to “tesser”— to fold space in search for her father. Dad is easily found, considering the size of universe; look for him on planet Camazotz, the home of a primal evil called, like our zany pal Pennywise, IT. Wrinkle’s author, Madeleine
L’Engle, was a devout Episcopalian, but her book is more Manichean. It was the house style of the Cold War, considering a battle of forces of light and darkness. The spiritual side was up front, in its quote of John 1:5 in praise of the power of light. This has been removed to make the movie nondenominational. Inclusivity is never wrong, but what’s replaced the religiousness is a rat’s nest of slogans, and exhortations to positive thinking. Meg’s boyfriend, Calvin (Levi Miller, Disney’s least threatening boy since the closure of the Mickey Mouse Club), all but tells Meg “I want to empower you.” When the three women recite the names of those who fought darkness on earth, it’s a roster of secular saints—Madame Curie is in there. It’s a live reading of inspirational posters on the walls of a high school library. This movie is going to hit a lot of aging children hard. Wrinkle was the first nerd-book in many ways. Meg was the awkward heroine to many bright rejects, and Reid doesn’t let the character down. But the trio of stars bulldoze the picture, and DuVernay
can’t coordinate this bunch who barely seem to be in the same movie—there’s no serious affection or tension between the women. They pose and smile. In the book the three were perhaps the witches from Macbeth. They had a shadowy side, like Rilkean angels. (Mrs. Who, a walking Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations, recites “When shall we three meet again?”) But it’s hard to take even star-women seriously in costumes apparently designed by Sid and Marty Krofft. Of these three interstellar witchy-poos, Oprah comes out the worst, in a starfish wig the color of oatmeal, eyes encrusted with glitter and blown up to Godzilla size by CG. Witherspoon is wrapped in sheets and twinkling, like a bliss-whipped Hari Krishna. Kaling sports supersized jodhpurs that accentuate her hips. Bad enough when she stands still, but then the script requires her to run in them. Not many interesting planets here, either. Patriotic Californians will feel pride in space paradises that look like the Golden State, from sloping fields of yellow weeds to redwood forests—even if the digital color has been cranked up to retina burn with neon flowers and strobing purple heather. It’s shot in New Zealand, but you’d never know. Bad movies happen to good people. And reactions to the errant awfulness of A Wrinkle in Time may not represent the alt-right’s slander or white backlash from Black Panther’s wonderful world of color. DuVernay must go on—the intimacy in the scenes of father and daughter are touching. And even in this tempest of pixels, requiring the ensemble to awe-gaze so many times at so many light shows, Reid is a presence. She’s sharp, tough and funny—as in a scene where IT tempts Meg with a vision of a cool version of herself, and we see Reid sauntering around, being a diffident tween. Ultimately, the multi-colored style of this movie will triumph. This film’s failure won’t even be a wrinkle in the progress to come.

‘I don’t even know how we’re going to do these new songs’
GET IT TOGETHER Danny Bengston, left, had to take a break from the road back in 2015. Now he’s back, two years sober and looking forward to making music.
Realignment
After substance misuse sidelined their last SJ show, Together Pangea play The Ritz BY MIKE HUGUENOR
B
ACK IN 2015, L.A. psych rockers Together Pangea almost played San Jose. That October, they were booked to headline a night of C2SV at then-recentlyopened Cafe Stritch. Up until the last second, that was the plan. Then something more important happened.
“I ended up going to rehab. That canceled the show,” says bassist Danny Bengston over the phone. At the time, the band was starting to move up in the world. They had just recorded an EP with Tommy Stinson, the bassist of legendary indie
rock group The Replacements, and it was set to be their biggest release yet. They would have come to San Jose as promotion for the record. But things in those days were tumultuous. Bengston describes the time as “pretty intense,” saying he went through a series of bad experiences due to drug and alcohol. His friends started taking note. There was an intervention. Then rehab. Now on the other side of it, things are going well for Bengston and the band. Shortly after his rehab stint, Together Pangea began seeing their tunes featured on TV and in film, including a promo video for the HBO series Animals. Despite the high profile feature, Bengston is modest.
“We’ve been lucky enough to have some fortune in the publishing world,” he says. Last year, the band released Bulls and Roosters, their lushest, and most fully realized record to date. Over the course of 13 tracks, Together Pangea carves out a space between Ty Segall and Fidlar, crafting acidfried melodicism like the former, and combining it with the stylistic sensibility of the latter. Album-opener “Sippy Cup” is an immediate standout, with its tightly coiled verse and catchy guitar lead. “If the world’s on fire, how come I feel so at ease?” singer William Keegan asks in the song’s chorus. This apocalyptic shrug sets the tone for the rest of the LP. Though things have been going well for them lately, there’s a sense that things are still a bit in flux for the band. When we speak, Bengston is in Mexico, where he’s gone on a trip to buy medicine. It’s an experience many musicians and freelancers can relate to, the result of America’s preference for the word “industry” in the phrase “health care industry.”
“It’s completely different from anything we’ve done before,” Bengston says. “There’s a lot of new instruments on there. There’s a lot of like glockenspiel and marimba, keyboards and synths and saxophone. We all feel pretty excited about this thing. It came out better than any of us could have hoped.” Those recordings were completed earlier this month and mark not just a stylistic change for the group, but a fundamental one for a live band. “I don’t even know how we’re going to do a lot of these new songs,” he says. “There’s a lot of planning and instrumentation we’re going to have to figure out.” For now, they’re still playing the material people know. But it’s clear that the new songs have lit a fuse under the band. As he prepares to drive back across the border, Bengston, now two years sober, reflects on what will be his band’s first San Jose gig. “We’re just really stoked to be able to be fortunate enough to keep touring and play shows for people,” he says.

“I’ve been coming to Mexico for a long time anyway,” Bengston says, adding that the band would regularly skip San Diego on tour to play Tijuana, a city they’ve enjoyed returning to over the years. And as a band, Together Pangea are in their own kind of border state: a period of creative flux brought on by a set of recent studio experiments—demos that may be the start of a full-length, or perhaps an EP. Bengston isn’t sure.

ADVICE GODDESS
By AMY ALKON
AdviceAmy@AOL.com
I have a history of terrible relationships that end in awful heartbreak. The advice I keep getting is to date down—get together with a man who is less attractive than I am and who likes me a little more than I like him. I was kind of into the idea of equality on all levels, but maybe I’m wrong.—Rethinking Woman After you’ve had your heart broken, it’s tempting to opt for romantic safety measures. For example, a garden gnome could be an ideal partner—because few women will fight you for your 18-inch “Man of Resin” and because his stubby little legs are molded together, making it impossible for him to run away. There’s a name for this “dating down” thing you’re contemplating: “the principle of least interest.” This is sociologist Willard Waller’s term—from his observations of dating dynamics between college students—describing how whichever partner is the least emotionally attached is in a position to “exploit” the other. Now, you aren’t looking to clean out a guy’s bank account or make him scrub the baseboards with Barbie’s toothbrush. Regardless, you’re likely to have more power in any relationship— and be less likely to be the exploitee—if your response to a guy’s “I love you SO much!” involves polite gratitude or pointing skyward: “Look! A UFO!”
The problem is, how do you engineer this sort of situation? Only “swiping right” on men you have the lukewarmies for? Only accepting dates from men you don’t entirely respect? Of course, even an “I’m just not that into you” strategy like this isn’t foolproof, because what anthropologists call “mate value” can shift—like when the mouth-breathing nerdy loser becomes the mouth-breathing but unexpectedly sexy startup multigazillionaire. Tempting as it is to look for hacks to avoid heartbreak, it’s probably more helpful to look at whether there was anything you could’ve—and should’ve— done differently in your past relationships. Beyond any willful blindness on your part, the reality is, relationships sometimes end in heartbreak. It’s just the price of getting together with a man you love and lust after—as opposed to one you approached with “You know, I’ve always kinda pitied you and found you borderline sexually repellant. Whaddya say we get a beer?”
There’s a mutual attraction between this guy in my doctoral program and me, and we have great conversations. I’d date him, but he’s in a long-distance relationship. Recently, he started giving driving lessons to earn extra cash. I need to learn to drive a stick shift, so I signed up. This has morphed into our spending time together on weekends, having lunch, etc. My friends say this is a bad idea. But I guess I’m just following my heart. Is that so wrong to do?—Crushing “Follow your heart!” is like that “forget about money; do what you love!” professional advice. And go right ahead with that career in lentil sculpture— assuming you’re looking forward to spending your golden years in a very nice retirement tent. As for all this time the guy is spending with you, consider that we seem to have evolved to have the romantic version of a spare tire in the trunk—a “backup mate” (to the partner we’re with). Evolutionary psychologists David Buss and Joshua Duntley explain that “mates might cheat, defect” (run off with another), “leave, or die. They might suddenly drop in mate value.” Their research finds that both men and women seem to maintain backup mates—three on average—and “try to keep their backup mates out of other relationships” (like by giving them false
hope during automotive lurchings around the parking lots of closed superstores). You might also consider that there’s more to making yourself attractive to a potential boyfriend than a few swipes of MAC and Maybelline. Social psychologist Robert Cialdini, reflecting on what he calls “the scarcity principle”: “Study after study shows that items and opportunities are seen to be more valuable as they become less available.” In other words, until a man is girlfriendfree, it’s in your best interest to be about as accessible to him as the upholstery of my late Grandma Pauline’s couch was to the rumps of most of humanity. There were people she would remove the plastic covering for—visiting movie stars and members of the British royal family (a la “I’m bored with St. Barts. How about a slushy January in suburban Detroit?”).

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY ARIES (March 21-April 19): The British science fiction
TV show Dr. Who has appeared on BBC in 40 of the last 54 years. Over that span, the titular character has been played by 13 different actors. From 2005 until 2010, Aries actor David Tennant was the magic, immortal, time-traveling Dr. Who. His ascendance to the role fulfilled a hopeful prophecy he had made about himself when he was 13 years old. Now is an excellent time for you, too, to predict a glorious, satisfying, or successful occurrence in your own future. Think big and beautiful!
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): New York is the most densely populated city in North America. Its land is among the most expensive on earth; one estimate says the average price per acre is $16 million. Yet there are two uninhabited islands less than a mile off shore in the East River: North Brother Island and South Brother Island. Their combined 16 acres are theoretically worth $256 million. But no one goes there or enjoys it; it's not even parkland. I bring this to your attention, Taurus, because I suspect it's an apt metaphor for a certain situation in your life: a potentially rich resource or influence that you're not using. Now is a good time to update your relationship with it. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): The iconic 1942 movie
Casablanca won three Academy Awards and has often appeared on critics' lists of the greatest films ever made. That's amazing considering the fact that the production was so hectic. When shooting started, the script was incomplete. The writing team frequently presented the finished version of each new scene on the day it was to be filmed. Neither the director nor the actors knew how the plot would resolve until the end of the process. I bring this to your attention, Gemini, because it reminds me of a project you have been working on. I suggest you start improvising less and planning more. How do you want this phase of your life to climax?
CANCER (June 21-July 22): If all goes well in the
coming weeks, you will hone your wisdom about how and when and why to give your abundant gifts to deserving recipients -- as well as how and when and why to not give your abundant gifts to deserving recipients. If my hopes come to pass, you will refine your ability to share your tender depths with worthy allies -- and you will refine your understanding of when to not share your tender depths with worthy allies. Finally, Cancerian, if you are as smart as I think you are, you will have a sixth sense about how to receive as many blessings as you disseminate.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): How adept are you at playing
along the boundaries between the dark and the light, between confounding dreams and liberated joy, between "Is it real?" and "Do I need it?"? You now have an excellent opportunity to find out more about your capacity to thrive on delightful complexity. But I should warn you. The temptation to prematurely simplify things might be hard to resist. There may be cautious pressure coming from a timid voice in your head that's not fierce enough to want you to grow into your best and biggest self. But here's what I predict: You will bravely explore the possibilities for self-transformation that are available outside the predictable niches.
A LT E R N AT I V E MEDICINE
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Cultivating a robust sense
of humor makes you more attractive to people you want to be attractive to. An inclination to be funloving is another endearing quality that's worthy of being part of your intimate repertoire. There's a third virtue related to these two: playfulness. Many humans of all genders are drawn to those who display joking, lighthearted behavior. I hope you will make maximum use of these qualities during the coming weeks, Virgo. You have a cosmic mandate to be as alluring and inviting as you dare.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): I suggest you gaze at exquisitely wrought Japanese woodcuts . . . and listen to jazz trumpeter Miles Davis collaborating with saxophonist John Coltrane . . . and inhale the aroma of the earth as you stroll through groves of very old trees. Catch my drift, Libra? Surround yourself with soulful beauty—or else! Or else what? Or else I'll be sad. Or else you might be susceptible to buying into the demoralizing thoughts that people around you are propagating. Or else you may become blind to the
By ROB BREZSNY week of March 14
subtle miracles that are unfolding, and fail to love them well enough to coax them into their fullest ripening. Now get out there and hunt for soulful beauty that awakens your deepest reverence for life. Feeling awe is a necessity for you right now, not a luxury.
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): In the Sikh religion,
devotees are urged to attack weakness and sin with five "spiritual weapons": contentment, charity, kindness, positive energy, and humility. Even if you’re not a Sikh, I think you'll be wise to employ this strategy in the next two weeks. Why? Because your instinctual nature will be overflowing with martial force, and you'll have to work hard to channel it constructively rather than destructively. The best way to do that is to be a vehement perpetrator of benevolence and healing.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In 1970, a biologist
was hiking through a Brazilian forest when a small monkey landed on his head, having jumped from a tree branch. Adelmar Coimbra-Filho was ecstatic. He realized that his visitor was a member of the species known as the golden-rumped lion tamarin, which had been regarded as extinct for 65 years. His lucky accident led to a renewed search for the elusive creatures, and soon more were discovered. I foresee a metaphorically comparable experience coming your way, Sagittarius. A resource or influence or marvel you assumed was gone will reappear. How will you respond? With alacrity, I hope!
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): The Velcro fastener
is a handy invention that came into the world thanks to a Swiss engineer named George de Mestral. While wandering around the Alps with his dog, he got curious about the bristly seeds of the burdock plants that adhered to his pants and his dog. After examining them under a microscope, he got the idea to create a clothing fastener that imitated their sticking mechanism. In accordance with the astrological omens, Capricorn, I invite you to be alert for comparable breakthroughs. Be receptive to help that comes in unexpected ways. Study your environment for potentially useful clues and tips. Turn the whole world into your classroom and laboratory. It's impossible to predict where and when you may receive a solution to a long-running dilemma!
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): On May 29, 1953,
Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay climbed to the top of Mount Everest. They were celebrated as intrepid heroes. But they couldn't have done it without massive support. Their expedition was powered by 20 Sherpa guides, 13 other mountaineers, and 362 porters who lugged 10,000 pounds of baggage. I bring this to your attention, Aquarius, in the hope that it will inspire you. The coming weeks will be an excellent time to gather more of the human resources and raw materials you will need for your rousing expedition later this year.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Although her work is among the best Russian literature of the 20th century, poet Marina Tsvetaeva lived in poverty. When fellow poet Rainer Maria Rilke asked her to describe the kingdom of heaven, she said, “Never again to sweep floors.” I can relate. To earn a living in my early adulthood, I washed tens of thousands of dishes in restaurant kitchens. Now that I'm grown up, one of my great joys is to avoid washing dishes. I invite you to think along these lines, Pisces. What seemingly minor improvements in your life are actually huge triumphs that evoke profound satisfaction? Take inventory of small pleasures that are really quite miraculous. Homework: Describe what you'd be like if you were the opposite of yourself. Write Freewillastrology.com.

SILICON SILICONALLEYS ALLEYS
WAYMARKERS Suhita Shirodkar’s works pull her back to a Silicon Valley she never experienced for herself.
City Signs
New exhibit features paintings, sketches of vintage signs BY GARY SINGH
O
RIGINALLY FROM Bombay, India, Suhita Shirodkar stands on corners, sits on benches, or infiltrates any San Jose locale to paint watercolors of old-school signage. A graphic designer by day, she sketches urban scenes wherever she roams, carrying a notebook, pen and ink, and watercolors to capture vintage components of the landscape as they fade away. Many of her discoveries happen by accident. “It’s a cross between journaling and plein-air painting, but it’s much
more urban-focused and more about documenting, and sort of visual reportage,” she says. “And watercolor just happens to be a very portable medium. I like the idea of accidentally finding stuff. Anything that catches my eye is worth drawing, to me.” More than 50 of Shirodkar’s watercolors will hang from walls in the Leonard & David McKay Gallery in the Pasetta House at History Park, starting this Sunday. The exhibit features sketches of vintage buildings or signage, some under threat from real estate developers, and some already lost to time. A free, self-paced, family-friendly “sketchcrawl” will also unfold across the park.
A book of Shirodkar’s sketches will also be available at the exhibit. Signs of the Times: Urban Sketches of Vintage Signs by Suhita Shirodkar features at least 40 pages of her watercolors along with historical liner notes about the signs or the buildings. Almost all the signs still remaining in San Jose are included in the book. We get beautifully decrepit roadside motels along Monterey Highway, neon signs of suburban liquor stores and paint stores, plus abandoned buildings like Zorba the Greek and the Mexico Theater. We even get facades of legendary still-active institutions like Original Joe’s, Falafel’s Drive-In, Western Appliance and the Flamingo Motel. Seeing a bountiful variety of local classic signs in one book is not only important for longtime dwellers, but also for transplants who just moved here. In a strange way, it almost functions like archaeological research, digging into a San Jose that only barely still exists. As real estate developers continue to smash, gentrify and poison the few aspects of native culture San Jose has left, these types of projects serve as primary historical documentation.
They provide a sense of place for the naturally displaced. What’s more, it took an artist from India to come here and do this. Shirodkar arrived in Silicon Valley 20 years ago during the first dotcom explosion. Back home, she worked in traditional print and the advertising industry and figured she’d come to the U.S. and get a two-year web degree of some sort, but she got married and stayed here instead. She never saw the previous generation of Santa Clara Valley, before vast landscapes of orchards were cannibalized by suburban sprawl. She became fascinated with vintage signage because it threw her back to an era she never witnessed. “I’m still a first-generation immigrant, and it catches my eye, to see things that are obviously from here, but not from the time I know Silicon Valley,” Shirodkar says, reflecting on when she first came to San Jose, back when the city’s agricultural past was mostly razed and paved over. “The signs link back to stuff before I knew it. I do find it very strange that you read about all the old orchards, but I find nothing about it 35 years later. The signs put us into a time that’s hard to imagine for somebody that didn’t see it.” In addition to the art opening at History Park this Sunday, the sketchcrawl will serve as a way for families and kids to observe the park environs and take their time drawing what they see. Urban, or this case, suburban sketching, is about the slowness, rather than a two-second experience like one gets via social media. Sitting down and taking one’s time to observe, draw and understand the subject matter is a fantastic, almost meditative escape from the brain-dead insanity of Snapchat or Instagram. “To sit and draw, it’s such a slow medium,” Shirodkar says. “It’s really slow compared to taking a photograph. It gives you a good feel for a place. When you’re drawing, you’re following contours, like making your way down, looking at something, very slow, and I really like that slow seeing. I miss it in my everyday.”

Drinking, eating and dancing through Silicon Valley on St. Patrick’s Day
S
T. PATRICK’S DAY is this Saturday, March 17. While the holiday was initially created to honor the fifth-century Catholic missionary credited with spreading Christendom in Ireland, nowadays it is more commonly viewed as a chance to honor friends and family by celebrating with great food and plenty of drink.
For those who plan on hitting the town this weekend, there are no shortage of pubs, clubs, bars and restaurants serving traditional Irish fare and pouring green beer. Here are just a few of the watering holes around Silicon Valley where you and your mates can have a good time.
BackBar SoFa 418 S Market St, San Jose 10pm: $10+ Patty goes to Bollywood at this St. Patrick’s Day party. Show up in green and gold Saturday night and dance to Bollywood jams, Bhanghra beats and Top 40 hits.
