Naughty Neighbor Dear Neighbor: The sun was rising after a long night. I was watching over my girls at the Motel 6 downtown. As you pulled into the parking lot I recognized your custom license plate. You hopped out of the car and took a few looks around, but you didn't see me behind the stairwell. Sure enough, you headed right up to Room 204. You must not be getting any from your beautiful wife at home because you set a new record time at 1 minute and 37 seconds. True story.

Stopping progress and improvements to transportation is a bit like people saying they liked the dark ages. Santa Cruz is not an island it amazes me how this isolationist attitude survives in what is supposed to be a progressive society, amazing.

The real issue is how many more people would take a train than take the current bus. Would that difference really justify the cost?

there are tracks from the valley through gilroy down along the monterey coast to santa cruz. it may take longer but its very beautiful. i dont know about all the red tape and legal issues but it does go through.

Do we really wish to Los Angelize our beautiful coastal areas by building freeways and rail lines to the coast?? I sure don’t. It shouldn’t be easy to get to the coastal areas…they should be destinations for special trips, not daily commutes. Those who live along the coast but work elsewhere should just endure the commutes over the existing roads. If they they don’t like it they should move. ANTHONY G. DOMINIC CASERTA’s living room doubles as his campaign headquarters—but according to two people who worked with him, the aspiring Santa Clara County supervisor made himself a little too at home. A draft resignation letter sent anonymously to Fly and penned by former Caserta staffer IAN CRUELDAD accuses his ex-boss of parading around in nothing but a bath towel on several occasions. Crueldad says he sent the parting note to a handful of friends to review but not to Caserta and not to Fly. But he confirms that he wrote it, and says the walking-around-in-a-towel incidents happened about a few times a week in the five months he worked on the campaign. Sometimes, he adds, the 42-year-old candidate would walk around in gray boxer briefs. Caserta firmly denies the allegations, calling Crueldad a lazy, lying, disgruntled ex-employee who left because he wanted to get paid more. “This is absolute pure fiction,” Caserta says.

GINA MAHAN, who supported Caserta’s campaigns for Santa Clara City Council, says she’s horrified that anyone would sully a selfless public servant and respected educator. “This is so wrong,” she tells Fly. “So, so wrong.” Crueldad acknowledges the money issue in his letter. According to him, he took home $500 a month for working 50-hour weeks since January. He says he was never fired from any former campaigns, as Caserta alleges, and that he They was far from lazy. He Did shared dozens of text What? messages to show SEND TIPS TO how often Caserta FLY@ communicated with METRONEWS. him, assigned him COM tasks and praised his work: “Great job,” “U r the man,” “You are amazing.” One former Caserta volunteer, who asked to withhold his name, also says a female colleague told him that Caserta touched her thigh and whispered in her ear, which she laughed off at the time.

Powerlifter Republican takes on long odds in bid for lieutenant governor BY SALVATORE MAXWELL

A

T A GLANCE, Lydia Ortega seems a walking contradiction.

She’s a voice of the #MeToo movement, but supports Donald Trump. She’s a conservative who shrugs off identity politics, but an economics professor who understands that students draw inspiration from seeing a Latina in a field where women and minorities are vastly underrepresented. She’s a powerlifter who came to the sport because of her own physical frailty. She’s a proud Republican with an aversion for party politics.

“My dad was an active Democrat and my mom an ardent Republican,” she says. “So I quickly learned how to see both sides of an issue, assess the cost and benefits and find common ground.” Ortega, 60, who lives in Sunnyvale and teaches at San Jose State University, relishes those contradictions, which make her stand out as she runs for lieutenant governor. “I grew up beating the odds,” she says. As one of four kids in a workingclass family in City Terrace, the same impoverished East L.A.

community where gubernatorial hopeful Antonio Villaraigosa was raised, Ortega understood hardship. Money was tight, and her father would have his kids gather around the kitchen table to help him write checks to pay the bills. “He wanted us to know the value of money,” Ortega recalls. Though her parents couldn’t afford to give their children a great deal, they taught them to value one another’s friendship. “That was the inheritance my parents could give to us,” she says. But Ortega defied statistics by going on to college at Loyola Marymount University. And then graduate school at George Mason University in Virginia. And then by becoming an economist. “I didn’t realize then that I was a statistical anomaly,” she says during an interview at Philz Coffee in Cupertino. “I was just doing what my parents taught me to do.”

8 dignity to the halls of the state Capitol. In her campaign video she calls current Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom for carrying on an extramarital affair with a staffer as mayor of San Francisco. “I know what women in the #MeToo movement have gone through,” Ortega says in her campaign video. “This has to stop.” Two years ago, she sued San Jose State after being removed as chair of her department, claiming that Dean of Social Sciences Walter Jacobs unjustly demoted her after subjecting her to “severe harassment because her management style did not conform to his false and stereotypical ideas” of how female leaders should act. The lawsuit continues to this day, and university spokeswoman Pat Harris declined to talk about the case. “SJSU refrains from commenting on litigation,” Harris says. But the demotion stung Ortega, who was closing in on her fourth four-year term. She spiraled into depression and, seeking change, signed up for a yoga class, which she hoped would ease her arthritis and help her lose weight. But she realized she lacked the strength and agility to keep up, which led her, by word of mouth, to powerlifting instructor John Destacamento. Destacamento saw potential in Ortega. He put her on a strict routine that helped her build muscle, which restored her confidence and gave her a new passion. Together, they created a mobile app called EfitX, which helped track her progress and turned into a shared business venture. At a San Jose State competition earlier this year, Ortega squatted 116 pounds, bench-pressed 82 and deadlifted 192. That qualifies her for a national event in October. “That’s really good for her age,” Destacamento says. The physical and mental transformation have given Ortega the stamina to juggle her university job, her ongoing litigation and her campaign, she says. “She’s strong,” Destacamento says. “Powerlifting involves a lot of challenges both mentally and physically. And those are important traits to have in a leader.”

She hopes to defy the odds again in her bid for lieutenant governor. California has never elected a woman to the position and hasn’t elected a Republican to the role since Michael Curb exactly 40 years ago—although Republican Abel Maldonado was appointed in 2010 by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. Ortega, an academic with 29 years in her field, says it’s time for California to elect a woman, a Latina and an economist to the office. She knows she faces a considerable challenge as a Republican in a state that bleeds blue, going up against Democrats Ed Hernandez, Eleni Kounalakis and Jeff Bleich and independent Gayle McLaughlin. Like the vice presidency of the United States, the state lieutenant governorship is a largely symbolic role. The second ranking officer of California’s executive branch is the successor to the governor and serves as the president of the state Senate. The lieutenant governor sits on the University of California board of regents, the California State University board of trustees, the California State Lands Commission and the Commission on Economic Development. It also appoints representatives to various state agencies and regulatory boards. Though Ortega was one of 137 economists to sign a letter supporting the Republican tax cut bill and decries “communist thugs rioting at Berkeley” in her campaign video, she believes she’ll be able to woo even Democrats with her expertise and her advocacy for a living wage and making college more affordable. That resonates with Ortega’s former SJSU student Morgan Kimbarow, who has volunteered for her campaign. “From her time as department chair at San Jose State she was somebody who fought for students time and time again and instead of going along with the administration,” says Kimbarow, who works for a tech company called Perspectium. “She would fight for students’ rights. For her I can see it coming through in her campaign as somebody who is willing to fight for the people who are going up against the establishment.” Ortega says she wants to restore

Dying to Work BY THE NUMBERS

The number of documented employment-related fatalities in California in 2017, according to a report titled “Dying to Work, which was released in time for May Day’s celebration of labor rights by nonprofit think tank Worksafe Inc. An exhaustive tally is hard to come by, however, since the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn’t count deaths from occupational diseases that develop over time, and doesn’t include fatalities mistakenly attributed to natural causes or personal medical conditions.

TIME OUT Silicon Valley Community Foundation CEO Emmett Carson has been placed on paid leave

amid a third-party investigation into a work culture described as toxic by former staffers.

Silicon Valley Community Foundation Rocked by Harassment Claims BY JENNIFER WADSWORTH The Silicon Valley Community Foundation’s board last week put its CEO and president, Emmett Carson, on paid leave while outside attorneys investigate allegations of sexual misconduct by his former second-incommand, Mari Ellen Loijens, and “a larger culture issue” of harassment at the nonprofit. Founding board member Greg Avis, a managing partner at Bangtail Partners investment firm, will take his place in the interim, leading the largest community foundation in the U.S., which manages donor-advised funds for Silicon Valley’s wealthy elite. Carson, for the time being, will continue to receive his $892,689 yearly salary. “The board of directors voted to place Emmett D. Carson on paid administrative leave from his role as CEO, president and board member until further notice while the investigation being led by independent counsel continues,” board officials noted in a statement

posted on the foundation’s website late last week. “That investigation will be thorough, and the board remains committed to taking all necessary actions once it has concluded to ensure that the Silicon Valley Community Foundation thrives today and for many years into the future.” Marc Gunther, the Chronicle of Philanthropy reporter who penned the expose on Loijens’ alleged abuse, called the move an example of a nonprofit board fulfilling its duty of oversight. “As I’ve written before, foundations are the least accountable institutions of American society,” he wrote in an April 26 blog post for the publication. “I hope the events at the SVCF will encourage others to take a close look at what foundations do and how they do it. They are too important to be left alone.” Gunther’s initial report, published on April 18, describes how actress Rose McGowan—who became a leading voice in the #MeToo movement last

year after saying she’d been raped by Hollywood mogul Harvey Weinstein— changed her mind about starting a fund with the community foundation upon seeing the abysmal online reviews left by ex-employees. The 140-employee nonprofit admits that it grapples with high turnover—73 percent of its staffers have left since the start of 2016. But it called that rate typical of the nonprofit sector. Despite the turnover, Loijens and Carson presided over a period of enormous growth, with the organization’s assets soaring from $8 billion to $13.5 billion in the past five years as it tapped into Silicon Valley’s unrivaled wealth. Even Loijens’ critics acknowledged her fundraising prowess, but said she made life miserable for those around her, berating some, making sexually inappropriate comments to others and even attempting to kiss a female subordinate. Loijens resigned amid backlash from donors days after Gunther’s story broke.

The number of such deaths in Santa Clara County last year, including San Jose bouncer and Little League coach Frank “Pancho” Navarro, 35, who was stabbed while working security outside Tres Gringos on Feb. 26. Two Gilroy laborers also died on the job: John Vodanovich, 54, was crushed by a tree that fell on a work truck parked at his company’s maintenance shop on Feb. 27, and Pedro Douglas-Perez, 67, got run over by a tractor on Sept. 1. In March, 65-year-old spotter Alfredo Prado was run over by a truck while directing traffic at a Hollister landfill. Driver Benjamin Sanchez, 51, fatally crashed into a tree in Mountain View. And finally, 57-year-old laborer Jose Rivas died in a work truck that caught fire after a collision in Cupertino on Dec. 30.

39%

Percentage of all U.S. workers killed on the job in 2016 who were classified as Latinos. The riskiest jobs include transportation, material moving and construction and extraction occupations. “California can and must do better,” the report concludes. “A protective workplace safety culture can only occur in the larger context of a worker-centered culture that values and protects workers, their families and their communities.”

MASTER STROKES Quality contemporary pieces like this one will be available for sale to the rich and not-so-rich collector.

Art of Inclusion Avante-garde exhibit brings Indian art scene to diaspora in U.S. BY GARY SINGH

T

HE SOUTH ASIAN avantgarde will invade a psychologist’s house in Saratoga this weekend. Thanks to Gallery Metropolis in Mumbai, India, along with some local co-conspirators on the curating and marketing ends, a provocative exhibition, Master Strokes: Unique Contemporary Art from India, will present works from some of the most cutting edge artists currently working in that country.

This will not be a showcase of antiquities or “exotic” miniatures. The gallery has shipped a variety of

paintings and visual works from its extensive collection straight to the house of Saratoga resident Anu Singh (no relation to me). A clinical psychologist and executive coach with a passion for collecting visual art, Singh aims to introduce members of the Bay Area Indian diaspora to the contemporary art scene of their original country. San Jose resident Uma Subramaniam, who originally came to the U.S. from Kerala in 1981, helped curate the show. By day a marketing executive, she partnered with with Gallery Metropolis owner Ashish Balram Nagpal to ensure the exhibit was not just for high rollers or seasoned investors. Newbie collectors are welcome. All of the artwork is available for purchase, with prices

ranging from $500 to $75,000, with both longtime masters and emerging artists represented. “Obviously, investing in original artwork, you attract the high-networth individuals, but [Nagpal’s] thing is, let’s try and make it more appealing to everybody, or more people,” Subramaniam said, adding that although the show contains authentic, good quality art, not everything is at stratospheric prices. In previous generations, India barely had an equivalent for what we in the West know as the artist-collector relationship, gallery representation or any of the traditional dynamics of the profession. When Nagpal opened Gallery Metropolis in Mumbai (then known as Bombay) in 1990, he was charting new territory. He nurtured, promoted and represented unusual artists, giving them a platform to get their art out in front of people who might purchase the work. Nowadays, he is considered a serious player on the world stage, often referred to as an “art investment guru” regularly launching the careers of diverse, unconventional artists in India. His vast collection

includes some of the country’s most avant-garde and sought-after artists. Gallery Metropolis has previously exhibited work in New York, where the collector market is more mature for those of the Indian diaspora, but since more and more Indians are living throughout the country, the gallery wants to make forays into other markets, especially the Bay Area. Enter Anu Singh. Although her professional career has nothing to do with art, Singh has been collecting work through Gallery Metropolis for 15 years. She views Nagpal as a venture capitalist for young artists in India. Last year, Singh hosted a smaller exhibit from the gallery’s collection to major success, but Master Strokes looks to be a much bigger show. Included in the exhibition will be a painting of the Legend of Kamakhya by Anjolie Ela Menon, several iconic works by Laxma Goud, Francis Newton Souza, and Chintan Upadhayay, as well as rare and early paintings by Raghava KK. A collection of signed archival prints of M.F. Husain’s Mother Teresa series will also be featured. Although India’s contemporary art scene is growing, the artists still don’t register among the diaspora, especially in the Bay Area. Collecting or investing in art is still a relatively new concept to most South Asians who immigrate to the U.S. Subramaniam says she wants to change all of that. “When I went to school in India, I went to a boarding school, so you’re very much exposed to the Western art scene and really not to the Indian art scene. It would be nice to get greater awareness and get people more involved in supporting the contemporary Indian art scene. I think there’s a lot going for it.” In my view, only one issue remains. If Indian millionaires in Silicon Valley can bankroll painters back home, I would also like to see them supporting native artists who actually live here. Local artists need money, too.

face the Comedian W. Kamau Bell dials back the jokes and simply listens to his fellow Americans BY JOHN FLYNN

D

ESPITE THE prevalance of comedians infusing their work with social commentary, W. Kamau Bell stands distinct. Atop his successful stand-up career, Bell kicked off the third season of his CNN show, United Shades of America, on April 29. On Shades, Bell acts as a sherpa for the couchbound to discover America. Rather than mostly mock people from confines of a New York studio, Bell travels the nation to allow the most talked-about subgroups in the country explain themselves— even members of the Ku Klux Klan and alt-right leader Richard Spencer.

Bell makes a point of attempting to shake people out of their preconceived notions, not that he believes he’ll save the world. A disciple of Jon Stewart’s school of blending humor and insight while covering the news, he sees the praise that he and others originally heaped upon this style of comedy as a bit naive. “We exaggerated what Jon Stewart was doing,” Bell says. “He spoke truth to power, but that doesn’t mean power is always listening. All we’re doing is helping people process the world. So now, maybe John Oliver gets credit for people knowing what net neutrality actually is, but that doesn’t mean he saved the internet. We overemphasize the power of jokes.” Bell’s provocative style of comedy made him Santa Clara University’s

pick for the Frank Sinatra Chair Artist in Residence. His wife, Melissa, graduated from the university and later taught dance there. Currently, he has an office in an art facility that still has that new building smell and a foyer featuring a huge handblown glass sculpture by popular (and expensive) artist Dale Chihuly. It’s a pretty good set-up—one Bell recognizes he could ruin at any second. “We’re in an era now where everybody's one tweet away from losing their job and their livelihood. Everybody,” Bell says, noting the one possible exception: the president. “Comics are in the position where our job is to say provocative things, because even if you’re not saying something controversial, making somebody laugh is provocative, like, ‘I didn’t expect you to say that!’”

the recent arrests of two black men at a Philadelphia Starbucks. But Bell is interested in more than simply wringing a laugh out of the latest news cycle. He strives to make larger points. One of the Emmy award-winner’s most potent personal anecdotes involves his experience of being mistaken for a panhandler at a now-closed Berkeley cafe when he came to visit his white wife and mixed-race child. His story closely resembles the recent headline-grabbing police action at a Starbucks in Philadelphia. On April 12, two black men were arrested while waiting to hold a business meeting at the coffee shop chain. The cause for cuffs, according to Starbucks, was “trespassing” as the men declined requests from store employees that they order something while they waited for a third individual to arrive. The incident drew the ire of activists who learned of it through social media and insisted the arrests were at the very least subconsciously, if not overtly, informed by racism. “All of America’s racism is connected,” Bell wrote in an op-ed in Berkeleyside on the occasion of the arrest and the Berkeley cafe’s concurrent closure. “Racism isn’t just a coffee shop problem. It is an America problem. And as much as many people don’t want to admit it, Berkeley is in America.” In a region where roughly 80

percent of voters rejected Trump, Bell acts as a necessary reminder of racism’s sneaky prevalence. Santa Clara’s selection of him as artist-in-residence reaffirms the university’s commitment to educating their students with diverse viewpoints. But that organizational outlook isn’t always reflected in the student body. In recent years, vandals have defaced school property with racist and homophobic messages. These episodes testify to the durability of the intolerance baked into American culture.

talking it out If Trump has done anything, Bell says, he proved that Americans were not baptized of their original sin of racism by electing a black president. The relative peacefulness of the eight Obama years obscured simmering resentment in tens of millions of Americans who elected a man that pledged to be vicious to practically every marginalized community in America. Now, Bell says, to act as though the stakes haven’t ratcheted up is irresponsible. “People have to take sides,” Kamau says. “People say [the county’s] divided. It’s always been divided. But you were allowed to pretend like it didn’t involve you. You were allowed to believe that your lack of engagement was actually a side. And

now, if you’re not engaged, then you’re on the wrong side. Then you’re hurting the people who are trying to make things better.” Kamau’s method of making things better has been to go out into America and expose CNN’s viewers to communities they may not have otherwise met. His third season’s first episode will take Americans to the border, where Trump has ordered the National Guard to stand watch until his wall is built—which may be never. So far, Bell’s interviewed Chicago gang members, Muslims in small towns, Appalachian coal miners and, most controversially, white nationalist Richard Spencer at a conference for the alt-right. In the era of epic clapbacks, Bell tones down the verbal violence that characterizes so many internet conversations. Even though Spencer essentially would prefer if no one who looked like Bell lived in America, Bell doesn’t attack him with a cathartic dressing down. Instead, most of the time, he allows Spencer to make his points. Unlike similar shows that can veer toward making their subjects into straw men, Bell gives his viewers the full Spencer experience, while still checking Spencer’s most preposterously false claims by splicing

in cheeky post-production clips to set the record straight. For example, Spencer poses a hypothetical: without Europe, what civilization would have sailed out into uncharted waters? Kamau answers: “Literally every other civilization that’s been by the water” while a cutaway animation presents depictions of ancient African and Asian seafarers. Still, many online felt that Bell gave Spencer a platform where his views would be legitimized and spread. Until then, Spencer was mostly known to the broader public, if at all, as that racist who got punched in the face during a live television interview—a reputation many felt was fitting and shouldn’t be salvaged by a national media appearance, although Spencer has also been featured on ABC News and the in pages of The Atlantic, among other prominent mainstream media appearances. But by encouraging Spencer to speak freely, Bell goads him into hanging himself by his own words and making his racism seem like little more than the demented ramblings of a pathetic man—such as Spencer’s “horror” at the prospect of a black James Bond. History has somewhat vindicated Bell’s approach. Even if his ideas persist, Spencer’s pretty irrelevant, as is provocative alt-right

FAMILY TIES W. Kamau Bell’s multi-ethnic family factors heavily in his comedy and worldview. speaker Milo Yiannopoulos and Trump’s supposed puppet-master: Steve Bannon. To borrow a phrase from DJ Khaled, once these leaders get national exposure, they tend to play themselves.

GETTING REAL “Bannon’s like Darth Vader, but if Darth Vader died halfway through the first Star Wars movie,” Kamau says with a laugh. “People were like, ‘You should have torn [Spencer] a new asshole.’ But at the end of the day, it doesn’t mean that you actually did anything. It doesn't enact anything. Nobody disappears after an epic clapback.” He makes the astute observation that YouTube is chock-full of clips of progressives and conservatives debating. The same clip will be labeled under one title proclaiming the conservative “destroyed” the progressive. While right underneath it, the same clip bears a different title stating it was, in fact, the conversative who was “destroyed.” It’s a potent example of how the internet has eroded America’s ability to agree upon what we’re seeing. But perhaps the internet just exacerbated a natural human tendency. In a 2014 study, Duke University researchers found that

respondents would reject the validity of a problem if the solution went against their political beliefs. When self-identifying Republicans believe addressing climate change will result in economic catastrophe, a majority reject the overwhelming science behind the phenomenon. But when they read about free markets being the solution, a slight majority supports the science. The trend also applied to liberals on issues like gun control. So if most online dialogues are like professional ping-pong matches with each side just whaling shots at each other with loads of spin, Bell’s conversations feel more like backyard rallies at a Fourth of July party. The more relaxed tone may not be as engagingly combative as other cable news showdowns. But perhaps it might lead to more solutions that would convince disbelievers that problems exist. These mostly arise during the panel segments of his show, where Bell maintains a clear perspective but also steps back and allows others to fill in the gaps to create a nearly allencompassing worldview. To this point, Bell prides himself that he’s been able to use his platform to elevate people from backgrounds and experts on issues that may fall outside of the typical fodder for cable news. By deferring to these other authorities, Bell not only broadens the discussion, but also broadens expectations of what type of people can occupy what roles in our society. “Our first two daughters were born during the era of Barack Obama,” Bell says. “They just sort of take it for granted in a way that me and my wife are not taking it for granted. Now our new daughter is going to be born as a Trump baby, and that makes representation super important because it lets you know what’s available to you.” By way of example, he brings up his daughters’ favorite television program, Doc McStuffins, which features a black female doctor as the central character. “So our daughters just assume that black women are doctors,” he says while noting that although Hollywood has made strides in broadening representation, the industry is still lacking for other

Citizens Watchdog Committee on 2000 Measure A Program Expenditures

on FY 2017 2000 Measure A Program Expenditures

The Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) is delivering transportation solutions critical to the vitality, prosperity and quality of life for all who live, work or play in Santa Clara County. In November 2000, Santa Clara County voters approved Measure A, a 30-year half cent sales tax devoted to specific public transit capital improvement projects and operations. Most of the ballot-defined projects are massive and very complex, requiring years to plan, design and construct. Although in just the 11th of a 30 year program (tax collection started mid-2006), VTA has achieved significant results toward meeting Measure A goals, including milestones achieved during FY 2017 (7/1/16 - 6/30/17): • Extending BART to the Santa Clara County cities of Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara The first phase, to Berryessa, is nearing completion, system testing is underway, and revenue service is projected for late 2018. • Improve Bus Service in Major Corridors Construction of Alum Rock Santa Clara Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) was completed and BRT revenue service along the corridor began May 2017. Also, construction of bus stop improvements for the Stevens Creek Rapid 523 was completed in late 2017 for this enhanced service that will serve the Berryessa BART Station when it opens in late 2018. • Caltrain service upgrades - The Santa Clara Caltrain Station Pedestrian Underpass Extension, which provides safe pedestrian and bicyclist crossing under the railroad tracks, was completed and opened in June 2017. PUBLIC HEARING: The CWC is holding a public hearing on FY 2017 Measure A expenditures to receive input from the community: Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. VTA Conference Room B-106 3331 N. The public is encouraged to attend but for those unable, written comments will be accepted until 5:00 p.m. on May 9 at the addresses shown below. If you need accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) such as sign language interpreters or accessible print materials, or need documents translated in your primary language or an interpreter for this meeting, please contact VTA’s Customer Service at least five days prior to the meeting at (408) 321-2300, TTY (408) 321-2330. Documents, Questions and Submitting Comments for CWC Public Hearing: Measure A Program documents and reports, including compliance audit results, are available at www.vta.org and for public inspection from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays in the Building B lobby at 3331 N. First Street, Building, San José, CA 95134-1927. Questions or comments on the hearing should be emailed to board.secretary@vta.org or mailed to the Office of the Board Secretary at the above address. INDEPENDENT AUDIT: Fulfilling its ballot-defined responsibilities, the independent Citizens Watchdog Committee (CWC) for Measure A commissioned an audit of the Measure A Program financial records for FY 2017. Macias Gini & O’Connell LLP, independent certified public accountants, conducted the compliance audit. They issued an unqualified (“clean”) opinion, meaning that in their professional opinion VTA complied in all material respects with the provisions defined in the ballot. Every annual Measure A compliance audit (12 to date) has received a clean opinion.

PUSH & PULL Although Bell feels that we may have exaggerated the impact of speaking truth to power through comedy, it certainly does seem to open at least some people up to new ideas. People may prefer entertainment with which they philosophically agree, but they may also be willing to entertain new perspectives if it comes with a laugh. A mix of humility and pride seeps into Bell’s voice when he mentions the older, white conservative man who came up to him at a mutual friend’s wedding and thanked him for shifting his perspective through his unique style of observation. He says he’s heard from children, parents and grandparents that his is the program all three generations can agree to watch. But Bell hopes people don’t just watch his show. He wants to push them to act, particularly if they’re lucky enough to reside in places where the chilling effects of the Trump administration aren’t so acutely felt—such as the verdant grounds of Santa Clara University. “We have to sacrifice and make some big changes to make the world a better place,” Bell says. “Those of us with privilege have more responsibility to make the world a better place. Because we have the time, resources and some of us have the skin complexion to get into the halls of power.” Here, Bell can’t help but make a crack that he feels as though “every white person in America is only like two phone calls away from a meeting with Trump,” a quip that also highlights that most of the students around him possess connections that can be used for much more than just securing a cushy internship after graduation. But he isn’t a fatalist who sees Trump’s election as the first domino in America’s fall. Rather, he sees Trump as a reaction consistent with America’s

history of meeting progression with regression. Slavery led to abolition, which led to Jim Crow, which led to the civil rights movement, which led to the law and order era, which filled prisons with people from communities of color, which is now leading to an increased demand for criminal justice reform. “It’s all cyclical,” he says. “We’re not going to be in this era of America forever.” Using his platform, Bell has helped to poke holes in the boxes that Americans stereotypically slot people into when they’re too cloistered, ignorant or lazy to get to know them better. And unlike some other comedians who host shows similar to his, Bell knows what it’s like to reside in a body that, no matter what heights he ascends to, will be regarded as dangerous by many because he is tall and black. So while most hosts can sympathize and express anger at what happened to those two young men at a Starbucks in Philadelphia, Bell knows exactly what it’s like to have an otherwise ordinary day disrupted by the dehumanizing realization that you aren’t as welcome in a place because of the way you look, because of factors outside of your control. As a self-proclaimed “blerd” or black nerd, he says his upbringing was tough at times because he felt like an outcast. He struggled to find those who looked and acted like him in his daily life or in popular media. But in that difficult period, he laid the foundation for his current success. “You start off feeling like, ‘Oh my God, I'm a misfit…’” Bell recalls. “For the comic book analogy, it’s no different than finding out you’re one of the X-Men. You’re like, ‘Oh my God, I have these laser powers… Wait, I can save the world!’ You think it’s the problem and then at some point you realize it’s your strength, it’s your solution.”

Seafood and Mexican spices go together like peas and carrots—and nowhere is that more evident than at Día de Pesca. The lunch special of three fish tacos and a lobster bisque ($9.99) is a fantastic value in itself, but the delightfully flaky fish and creamy, rich soup make this a must-get. Also, their camarones al Cucuy ($14.50) brings the heat, but also the flavor.

El Burro 1875 S Bascom Ave, Campbell This one is a bit bittersweet. After nearly 50 years in business, El Burro will be closing their doors soon. This will be diners’ last chance to get a hold of their signature chile verde ($12) and enchiladas Suizas ($13). The silver lining in this is that Luna Mexican Kitchen plans to transform the space into their second location. So say “adios” and “bienvenido” with El Burro’s signature Cadillac margarita.

Spice Things Up Fill up on Silicon Valley’s best Mexican food this Cinco de Mayo BY JOHN DYKE

C

INCO DE MAYO may conjure images of college students engaging in acts of cultural appropriation while scarfing bland tacos and swilling cheap cerveza. But don’t let those gringos ruin the party. Silicon Valley’s many Mexican kitchens have far more to offer than carne and Corona. From fresh seafood, to earthy sauces that can include more than 30 individual spices, Mexican food is as diverse as the sprawling country’s various geographic regions. Here in the South Bay we are very lucky to

5440 Thornwood Dr, San Jose egg, cheese, sour cream and carne asada all in one tidy package. Angelou’s also serves up a mean Mexi breakfast, and their house special, huevos rancheros ($6.75), are also a fan favorite.

Bravo! House of Enchiladas 1075 Tully Rd, San Jose

have literally hundreds of restaurants that serve up delicious Mexican fare. Compiling this list came down to one word: variety. I tried to touch base with all that Mexico has to offer us, from the neighborhood taco joint to the white tablecloth gourmet Mexi eats. So, grab a bottle of Tapatío and bring an appetite because it’s time to get taco loco. ¡Arriba!

Angelou’s Mexican Grill 21 N Second St, San Jose This downtown favorite is known for delivering tasty Mexican chow at reasonable prices. Try their new Mo-Co Loco Burrito ($7.75). It includes rice,

As the name suggests, enchiladas are the specialty here—and they certainly bring their A-game. Their Michoacanas cheese enchiladas with fried chicken y papas ($11.99) deliver a home run of flavor with its threecheese enchilada, fried chicken leg and crispy potato wedges.

Churros El Guero 2217 Quimby Rd, San Jose This churro cart is located not too far from Eastridge Mall and serves up piping-hot, deep-fried cinnamon churros. While they have plain (aka boring) churros, I highly recommend getting one of the churros flavored with caramel, vanilla, chocolate or strawberry filling.

This eatery, located across from Oakridge mall, specializes in Oaxacan cuisine—specifically, mole. While most diners are familiar with the chocolaty black rendition of this traditional Mexican sauce, El Tule has a mole for every color of the rainbow, including red, green and yellow. For a truly authentic treat, get the chapulines ($7.99) appetizer, which features claygriddle-toasted grasshoppers sprinkled with El Tule’s signature seasoning to make for an unforgettable salty, sour and crunchy delicacy.

Happy Hooligans 1711 Branham Ln, San Jose While not a traditional Mexican restaurant, Happy Hooligans has a nice selection of vegan Mexican comfort food. Their young jackfruit carnitas can either be served in a burrito ($12.50), enchilada ($13), flautas ($13) or on taco plate ($12.50). Their nachos grandes ($12.50) are also a solid choice and come topped with their house vegan cheese sauce. Diners can even add the jackfruit carnitas ($3) to make it a well-balanced meal.

La Birrieria

La Costa

1480 S White Rd, San Jose

Multiple locations

It’s hard to have a list of Mexican eateries without mentioning at least one birria spot—and this one is the granddaddy of them all, serving the Eastside since 1986. While they do serve up some other Mexi favorites, their birria ($10) is the reason to come here. This Jalisco specialty dish consists of fork-tender goat, cooked slowly in a spicy chili pepper-infused broth and comes served with their house-made corn tortillas. Served mostly at special occasions (weddings, baptisms, etc.), it’s also renowned as a hangover remedy.

This 2013 and 2014 Michelin recommended mariscos joint has been an Alum Rock favorite for years. They are quickly expanding throughout the city— their newest location on South First Street opened up not too long ago. Their gigantic “super” shrimp cocktails ($16) are my personal favorite, but a few of my cohorts swear by their fresh oysters ($22/ dozen) served on the half-shell.

La Chingada Taqueria

273 Willow St, San Jose

3281 Sierra Rd, San Jose While the name of La Chingada Taqueria (roughly translated: The Fucking Taqueria) might catch one’s attention, it’s their fantastic Mexican food that is really turning heads in San Jose’s Berryessa neighborhood. Their Piña Loca ($17) is a must try here. It consists of a cored-out pineapple shell filled to the brim with shrimp, octopus and pineapple, cooked in a devilishly hot diabla sauce and topped with a thick blanket of Jack cheese.

La Original Paleteria y Neveria This family-owned Mexican ice cream shop has more than 20 custom-made flavors from a plant in Livermore. While they host all the usual Mexi ice cream flavors—like strawberry, mango, pineapple, guava and café—they also have more exotic ones, such as elote, membrillo, zapote, nanche and even queso! The latter tastes like a rich, creamy cheesecake. Mmmm… cheesecake.

This new South Bay hotspot is manned by the former head chef of El Paisa, Ruben Reyes. Featuring homemade tortillas and a top-notch salsa bar, this tiny hole-in-the-wall is serving up sit-down-quality eats at taqueria prices. Try the giant San Jose burrito ($9) that comes with one’s choice of meat, guac, sour cream and french fries.

The undisputed kings of the Mexican sandwich, aka the torta, do big things for a pequeño price. Their popular Milanese ($7.50) torta is gigantic and can easily feed two hungry hombres. Its breaded steak filet, thick-cut queso, avocados and produce make this one an extremely filling sammy. They also serve up burritos, tacos and sweet Mexican confections.

Mavericks Mexican Grill 1111 Meridian Ave, San Jose Mavericks specializes in the mariscos side of the Mexican food spectrum. Their breaded halibut tacos ($4.35 each) are a house specialty. My favorite here is the chimichanga del mar ($12) that comes packed with

Sancho’s Taqueria 491 Lytton Ave, Palo Alto Another legit Mexican spot located in a high-priced Palo Alto neighborhood that actually has “normal” prices. Despite its humble exterior, the venture capitalist types in their Ferraris can be seen queuing

Santa Fe Taqueria Multiple locations This popular Eastside chain, which sports two taquerias and a grocery store, has been a longtime favorite of mine for their amazing carne asada fries ($9). They come out fully loaded with fresh crema, pico de gallo, guacamole and tons of grilled carne. The salsa bar is also quite good, and their horchata ($3) is one of the best in the city.

Tacolicious 300 Santana Row, San Jose This purveyor of “fancy” boutique tacos strives to be more like an upscale Mexico City eatery than its humble beginnings as a taco stand in S.F.’s Ferry Building. Boasting an impressive array of over 120 different tequilas, they will definitely have the proper lubrication needed to get through the massive 10-taco platter ($40).

Tacos El Rancherito 1729 McKee Rd, San Jose This neighborhood taco joint has been one of my favorites for years. Once renowned for their $1 tacos—now $1.50—El Rancherito is the place to be for cheap, delicious but authentic street eats. They have all the usual favorites, but also feature my holy trinity of exotic Mexi meats: tripas (tripe), lengua (tongue) and cabeza (head).

Taqueria Los Pericos 1581 W Campbell Ave, Campbell With the usual spread of Mexi meats and a kick-ass salsa bar, this Campbell taqueria is super legit. Their house orange sauce can easily compete with any of the big boys, and their al pastor is one of the better pork preparations around.

Taqueria Tlaquepaque Multiple locations These self-professed “masters of the Mexican munchies” are probably better known as being the place with the hard to pronounce name (T-la-kehpah-keh). Their chow is as authentic as it comes, short of flying to Jalisco. They’ve been serving Willow Glen for well over 20 years now in multiple locations. Their super chavelas ($9) are the thing to get here. And to help soak up all that booze, the steak Tlaquepaque ($14) with the potted beans is a meal fit for an Aztec king.

Trine’s Café Multiple locations One of San Jose’s original familyowned chains, Trine’s Café s have been around for over 40 years now; they used to be seven-restaurants strong, but they recently downsized to just three. Trine’s was the first place I tried the classic Mexican hangover soup menudo ($10), and they are still my gold standard. This is definitely the place to be hit up after a long night of tequila shots.

Tu Mero Mole Multiple locations As the name suggests, mole is the specialty of the house here; the mole de puebla ($14) features a chicken breast topped with their house-made mole—a mix of six different chili peppers, almonds, walnuts, peanuts, pine-nuts, pecans, raisins, sesame seeds and chocolate. It’s served with their fluffy handmade corn tortillas, rice and beans for a little slice of Mexi heaven.

United Paleteria y Neveria Multiple locations This popular spot for exotic Mexican treats and ice cream is known for their mangonada ($5). This concoction features slices of fresh mango, mango ice cream, chamoy, chili powder and is finished with a tamarind-covered straw. The taste combination hits every corner of diner’s taste buds with its addictively sweet, spicy and sour flavors.

HOMO EX MACHINA THE CRYSTAL Thu, 8pm, $20+ METHOD Prosser Studio, Stanford What price do we pay for the longer lives modern science can give us? It is a question that has haunted humanity since Mary Shelley’s seminal speculative horror novel, Frankenstein. Today, 200 years since Dr. Frankenstein’s monster first sprang to life on the page, artists and thinkers continue to grapple with many of the same questions Shelley raised. Stanford bioethicist Karola Kreitmair explores these themes in her new play, Homo Ex Machina, in which a woman agrees to undergo an experimental treatment—the implantation of a neurostimulator in her brain. The results are more than she and her partner bargained for. (NV)

A decade and a half before EDM producers like Calvin Harris, Diplo and the late Avicii became the new rock stars, electronic music brushed fleetingly up against the mainstream. Groups like Basement Jaxx, Fatboy Slim, The Chemical Brothers and The Prodigy uploaded their bombastic tunes to American airwaves in the mid- to late-’90s, riding a brief wave of interest in rave culture before being washed away by boy bands, rap metal and the garage rock revival. Vegas-bred duo The Crystal Method were a vital part of the big beat scene. Down to one member—Scott Kirkland—The Crystal Method continues to spin up dark, psychedelic beats. (NV)

The South Bay’s face doesn’t stand a chance. Symphonic metal quintet Kamelot is riding into town like a legion of timespace-bending valkyrie—dealing out punishing, pinch-harmonicpunctuated guitar solos and double-bass runs that ripple like thunder across a post-apocalyptic hellscape. The group released its 12th studio album, The Shadow Theory, on April 6. On it, they fuse obsidian smooth synths, precision shredding and Hammer of Thor bottom end. Soaring vocals come courtesy of the group’s current frontman, Tommy Karevik, formerly of Swedish progressive metal outfit Seventh Wonder. (NV)

Somewhere around 2010, young musicians all over the country rediscovered the power of pairing emotionally vulnerable lyrics with jangly, guitar-driven hooks. Joyce Manor soon emerged as a top talent in this so-called emo revival. Their 2016 effort, Cody, saw the band push their frenetic sound in new directions—with an acoustic track, a handful of longer songs and some of their most concise writing yet. Though much of the album deals in anxiety and existential pain, it also has some bright spots. When “Constant Headache” starts blaring and the monster guitar crescendo hits, The Ritz will feel like one big group hug. (YK)

Some of Silicon Valley’s most talented percussionists will be pounding on very big drums this weekend as a part of the Stanford Taiko Spring Concert. The university’s 18-piece resident taiko ensemble has prepared a brand new show to celebrate the season. Titled “Wavebreak,” the concert will feature new arrangements from the group’s current repertoire, along with three new compositions. Stanford Taiko will also share the stage with student a cappella group Talisman for a special collaboration. Combined, the two groups boast a legacy of more than 50 years of telling stories through music. (YK)

The biblical story of creation has inspired painters, playwrights and musicians for millennia. Austrian classical composer Joseph Haydn turned in his artistic interpretation back in 1799 with “The Creation,” an oratorio that takes its audience from a “Representation of Chaos” up to Adam and Eve’s declaration of love. Keeping in stride with the philosophical and intellectual currents of the decidedly bummeraverse Enlightenment era, the piece ends before the commission of humanity’s original sin— focusing instead on the wonder of God’s creation. Conductor John Nelson leads Symphony Silicon Valley in presenting this unflinchingly optimistic work. (NV)

After lighting up Levi’s Stadium last May and marking the 30th anniversary of their seminal album, The Joshua Tree, Irish modern rock megastars U2 return to San Jose on their Experience + Innocence Tour. The run of shows comes on the heels of their latest album, 2017’s Songs of Experience. The album features a song titled “American Soul.” Fans of Kendrick Lamar’s will recognize the track as a fleshedout version of “XXX”—his collaboration with the Dublin rockers, which appeared on his Pulitzer Prize-winning 2017 full-length, Damn. POWERING UP The San Jose Museum of Art will use a Knight Foundation grant to hire a new tech director.

Ars Technica SJMA aims to step up its technology with new Knight Foundation grant BY WALLACE BAINE

T

HE LEADING EDGE is always on the move in tech, and it’s a challenge for legacy arts institutions, such as art museums, to keep pace. But soon, the San Jose Museum of Art will have a little help in that arena.

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has awarded the SJMA a grant for a new hire designed

to give the museum’s technology capabilities a boost. Eight museums in five cities across the U.S., including San Jose, will be able to hire new staff with the specific task of bringing new technology to bear on each museum’s mission. “These folks will be working between the curatorial arm, the educational team and other teams to think about how technology can impact the visitor experience,” says

Chris Barr, the Knight Foundation’s director of arts and technology. For many, particularly of the older generation, the art museum provides a respite from the relentlessness of tech in the modern world, and still offers an unmediated experience between art work and art appreciator. The challenge for museums today, Barr says, is to bring along technological advancements without compromising that core experience. “I would hesitate to say that the conventional museum experience is no longer working,” Barr says. “Lots and lots of people go to these spaces every day and have transformative experiences. At the same time, people also go to these spaces looking for art to enhance their social experiences, to make them think in new ways, to share and create conversations with others.” The push to bring in technologically

savvy curators, he says, is “to create delightful and stimulating experiences that go beyond the traditional nature of a museum.” Several large institutions have already recruited and hired technologists to enhance their staffs. The new Knight Foundation grants are designed to reach the next level of mid-size museums. “We want to give (the selected museums) an opportunity to have someone who is technology-minded sitting at the table while they’re planning exhibitions and being able to think about both the physical space and the digital spaces as touch points, and how best to utilize that digital space to achieve the goals of any individual exhibition.” As an example of how larger institutions have enhanced their exhibits with tech, Barr pointed to “augmented-reality” apps that allow people to access digital materials on their cell phones within the museum space that are invisible otherwise. To take just one example, Barr says, “You go into a space, look at and interact with all the artwork, and have that physical experience. And, then, if you wanted to, you could pop open your phone and through the app, you could see these digital sculptures that you can only see through the lens of your phone, but that still relates and interacts with the architecture of the museum. Still, you want to think beyond the ‘Gee whiz, wow.’ You want to ask, how does tech help us showcase art relevant to our community? We can do that on our walls, and now we can do that in our digital space as well, capturing audiences that are quite new.” The position in San Jose will be manager of interactive technology. The SJMA is the only institution in the program west of the Mississippi. The others are: Charlotte, North Carolina; Detroit; Philadelphia; and Miami. Barr says he also hopes the new positions expands the possibilities for job seekers in tech. “This particular position is going to appeal to someone who wants to make that mission-related impact while also moving their career in tech forward.” For more information on the Knight Foundation’s new technology grants, go to knightfoundation.org.

MOMMY DEAREST An overwhelmed mom is rescued by a perky helper: the ‘Portlandia’ version of ‘Mary Poppins.’

Handmaid's Tale

‘Juno’ writer-director team tackle postpartum depression, suburban malaise in ‘Tully’ BY RICHARD VON BUSACK

T

HEY CALLED JUNO whipsmart, and some of us still have the lash scars. Tully, by writer Diablo Cody and director Jason Reitman, has everything left out of their first film together that made it the crowdpleaser it was. Cody tends to write characters that are what the science-fiction fans call “a Mary Sue”—meaning an awesomely idealized version of the writer, so brilliant that the other characters sort of gaze in amazement at her.

Tully has some of the narcissism seen in Juno and their follow-up, Young Adult, but there’s also some unusually raw material, acted by Charlize Theron with barely smothered fury. Marlo (Theron) has a young son who is vaguely on the autism spectrum, and an older daughter who is in an awkward stage. Mom is vastly pregnant—like someone in a previously unseen fourth trimester. Her husband, Drew (Ron Livingston, looking like Despair on a monument), has a high-tech job he can’t begin to explain to listeners. When not plugged into shooter games on his console, he travels for

work frequently, leaving Marlo alone on the mommy track. Marlo’s very well-off brother Craig (Mark Duplass) offers a suggestion: he’ll hire Marlo a ‘night-nanny’ who comes in during the first difficult months after birth, to tend the baby and bring it in for midnight feedings. We hear dialogue about how Marlo doesn’t want to be indebted to the insufferably rich Craig, but the delay is mostly there so we won’t think Marlo is spoiled. The nanny finally arrives: Tully (Mackenzie Davis of Halt and Catch Fire) as manic and as pixieish a dream girl as ever seen—too-bright smile, gleaming eyes, a wardrobe of oversized denim that looks like an OshKosh B’gosh jumper on a toddler. Not only is she a perfect servant but she’s also a marvelous confidante, helping to pull Marlo out of the pit of postpartum numbness and despair. “Why are you so much wiser when I’m so much older?” Marlo wonders. Tully is spookily chipper, but we’re warned off from the thought that it’s time for the usual servant-trouble melodrama, in which the nanny takes

both husband and baby. But Tully is indeed too good to be true. And the band Beulah Belle’s open-chord guitar cover of the theme from “You Only Live Twice” is a clue to what’s really going on. Tully’s well-articulated anguish over a mother’s loss of self while tending a newborn is very unusual. In the feminist days of rage, it would have been society who forced the woman into the role of brood sow and slop cleaner. In this aftermath of an unplanned pregnancy, Marlo did this to herself—she has no one to blame— and here is everything savage about new motherhood that was skated over in Juno. The montage of breast pumping and diaper changing is so brutal you feel like calling mom in the middle of the movie and thanking her. It’s during an escape to Brooklyn that Tully gets its payoff, as Tully and Marlo have a few drinks and revisit the places she spent her youth. Some will definitely call the reveal a cheat, and they’d be right. It’s a hard film to justify in the parking lot afterward. If a movie was made by its lines alone, this is Cody’s best writing. The insufferably rich sister-in-law ordering her computer, “Siri, play hip-hop.” Or Marlo’s riposte when a school administrator describes her child as “quirky”—“Do I have a kid or a ukulele?” But there’s also Cody’s typical shiny wordplay, the kind that makes your hair hurt: “I’m like Saudi Arabia, I have an energy surplus,” Tully says sweetly. Her bedazzlement with the role of handmaid seems straight out of Gilead… or, in lighter moments, the Portlandia version of Mary Poppins. Except for the NYC sequence, Tully was shot in Vancouver, posing as Long Island or something. Marlo’s house is that dull earth-tone brown exclusively seen in dowdy Pacific northwest fixer-uppers. Reitman’s sense of terroir isn’t strong—visually, Young Adult couldn’t decide if it was set in a smelly Bumpkinville or a quirky, hipster small town. Ultimately, there’s too much sting in Tully to dismiss, and Theron’s fierceness nails this down. The movie is so fervent, it’s a kind of apology for the callowness of Juno.

STONER SCIENTISTS Sleep’s new album, ‘The Sciences,’ was released without warning—on 4/20, natch.

Dope Beats

San Jose stoner metal legends Sleep return with surprise release BY MIKE HUGUENOR

W

ITHIN THE WORLD of heavy metal there is a magic word. Some people may listen to metal for years—decades—and never hear it spoken. But once it’s heard, it is impossible to go back. It is a single word capable of changing reality entirely, twisting the once-familiar into something mystic, epiphanic, otherworldly.

That word is Dopesmoker. The third album by San Jose stoner metal trio Sleep, Dopesmoker is arguably the most ambitious metal album of all time. An hour long and a single track, it takes everything heavy from the genre, slows it down by about a hundred beats per minute, and creates something so earthshaking it approaches biblical proportions. It is heavy. It is massive. And for many, it is almost a religious experience. In fact, one unauthorized early release printed the record under the title Jerusalem. San Jose has long been a haven for metal, but Sleep is one of the very

few groups from the South Bay city to be profiled in Pitchfork, The New York Times, The Observer and other such high profile outlets. While not everyone in the city knows it, Sleep is part of San Jose’s cultural heritage. Recorded in 1996, Dopesmoker went through a famously protracted release process. When their label heard it, they found it unlistenable and unmarketable. It was edited, chopped up, and then shelved for years, breaking up the band in the process. This label, by the way, was London Records—the same London Records that put out The Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues, and SaltN-Pepa. In retrospect, it was a project that was always doomed—the perfect mix of creative genius and backwardthinking record label executives. Of course, people eventually caught up with what Sleep had done. In 2003, Dopesmoker was finally properly released to the masses via influential metal label Southern Lord. Highly anticipated and already legendary, it

I started High on Fire with [Sleep cofounder Matt Pike] after he was done with Sleep, so I do have a lot of stories. San Jose at that time, the music scene was happening. Down the street from the F/X, where The Ritz is now, towards 280 there was an old building called the Rock Gardens that a bunch of bands played in, and that’s where Sleep practiced. On a Friday or Saturday night, that whole area was just as busy as the SoFA Street Fair was last Sunday. You could bounce from one club to another. There were a ton of good bands. Then Sleep showed up. Bob Marley had that weedy essence to his music, praising weed, but then came these three guys who were hanging out downtown talking about weed, and being a stoner. It was kind of trippy. They were doing heavy metal, but they had this rasta thing too. They were just these real interesting people who were kind of off a bit. The next thing you know, people were popping off dressing kind of ’70s. You couldn’t say it was only because of Sleep, but it kind of was. They got signed to Earache and went to Europe. Everywhere they went, people copied them. Either their music style, or how they were dressing. It was almost like when you hear about the Ramones going to Europe. When they came back from Europe I hadn’t really been sold on them. There

has been hailed as a masterpiece by an incredibly diverse list of writers, artists and musicians. The shape of metal has never been the same since. Now, more than 20 years after their initial breakup, San Jose’s most legendary metal band have returned with their first full-length since Dopesmoker. Appropriately released on 4/20—and without warning or promotion—The Sciences is drawing high praise, and not just from Pitchfork and metal blogs. Spin, Rolling Stone and even NPR have weighed in with favorable reviews. In honor of the dramatic return of San Jose’s most dramatic cultural export, several of the South Bay’s longest serving rock & roll veterans share their memories of discovering Dopesmoker and elaborate on the album’s enduring legacy.

metroactive MUSIC were plenty of other bands that were just as heavy in San Jose, but when they came back from that tour where they played every night, it was like everything clicked. Like, “Oh, fuck. I get it now.” Pounding drums, super loud guitar. That was pretty much it. After that, I was sold.

Willis Rosenthal Vocalist for Insolence, Drunken Starfighter It was the early ’90s and there was a lot going on in music. It was true, even in the San Jose music scene. I was in high school when I got my hands on a copy of the Melvins’ Ozma. This album primed me for the first Sleep album, which I purchased at one of their early shows at a bowling alley in Saratoga. Not only was I blown away by their unrelentingly slow sound, I was fascinated with their style. The early shows were full of bikers and retro stoners, all this was happening during the rise of hip-hop, pop punk, and nu metal. It seemed refreshingly out of step with everything else going on.

Ray Stevens Bassist for The Faction, Los Olvidados I did sound for them at F/X one night. No one was there but their girlfriends. It was on a Tuesday night or something like that, which, sometimes people don’t come out. When they started setting stuff up I knew I wasn’t going to have to mic anything. They just had stacks of amps and no one was there. They really just had one mic and it alone was seriously peaking they were so fucking loud. I couldn’t believe it! I had one mic for vocals and that was peaking out in the red! At the time I thought they were slower than Sabbath, and when they started getting popular I couldn’t believe it. Nobody expected how big they would be. Everybody kind of grew to love them. But at the time I could see why people didn’t get it. It was almost like, “These guys are going the other way.” Like the opposite of punk rock, how slow it was and how heavy it was. It was definitely something unique.

37

Bailey Lupo Guitarist for FRIGHT, Try the Pie I was 17, 18 years old. My buddy Jason, he was in that band Monstrauss. He’s my age, but he was, in the best way possible, just a ’90s metal head. Just any ’90s metal of all sorts. Funk metal, goregrind, anything. I remember he was talking about this band Sleep, how they’re legendary, and the whole urban legend of them—that they nearly bankrupted a record label, they spent all the money on walls and walls of amplifiers, and weed. They just bought a bunch of weed and amps. And the label was like, “What the fuck? What did you guys do with our money?” It was this one song that was like an hour and a half long. So we listened to it. Dopesmoker. At that time I was getting into more heavy music, but I felt like I’d never been hit so hard. It was so fucking intense. Like you’re just staring up at a monolith. Like a monolith on your chest. Like a big cough that you can’t get out. It’s ridiculous.

Mikey Gagnon-Queen Music Director at KFJC I was first handed a large stack of CDs from a friend who had decided that he needed to clear out some CDs from his collection. Amongst the awesome selection of sludge and industrial music was this off white album cover with the most insane drawing: a sheikh riding a four-headed horse while brandishing a three-headed snake in one hand and a scimitar in the other. It read Dopesmoker in the corner and I just knew this was going to be something heavy. After realizing it was an hour long track, I was hooked. I never thought you could make an album that was one hourlong track and that was OK. That freedom really opened my eyes and mind to searching out music that didn't fit the mold. Which lead me to joining KFJC, ’cause they played music that didn't fit the mold and they worshiped Sleep as much as I did.

7PM FRI 5/4 WILLIAM SCHAFF ARTIST RECEPTION @ ANNO DOMINI First Friday = lots of art happening in San Jose. I’d start at the reception for acclaimed visual artist William Schaff’s new exhibit, "I've got a message for you, if I could only remember…” He’s pretty well known for his album artwork, like Okkervil River and Godspeed You! Black Emperor. I follow his Flickr account where he’s constantly posting new art. Schaff’s got skills to pay the bills, so it’s no wonder so many folks get his work tattooed... ADVICE GODDESS

By AMY ALKON

AdviceAmy@AOL.com

I recently had my addiction recovery memoir published. I’m very honest and vulnerable in it, and readers feel super-connected to me because of it. Most just briefly thank me for how it changed their life, etc. However, a few have really latched on to me via social media. I respond to their first message, and then they write back with pretty much a whole novel and message me constantly. I don’t want to be mean, but this is time-consuming and draining.—Unprepared Not to worry…that fan won’t be stalking you forever—that is, if you’ll just sign the medical release she’s had drawn up for the two of you to get surgically conjoined. In writing your book, you probably wanted to help others get the monkey off their back—not point them to the open space on yours so they could line up to take its place. The interaction these fans have with you is a “parasocial” relationship, a psych term describing a strong one-sided emotional bond a person develops with a fictional character, celebrity, or media figure. These people aren’t crazy; they know, for example, that Jimmy Kimmel isn’t their actual “bro.” But we’re driven by psychological adaptations that are sometimes poorly matched with our modern world, as they evolved to solve mating and survival problems in an ancestral (hunter-gatherer) environment. Though it still pays for us to try to get close to high-status people—so we might learn the ropes, get status by association, and get some trickle-down benefits—the adaptation pushing us to do this evolved when we gathered around fires, not flat-screens. This makes our poor little Stone Age minds ill-equipped to differentiate between people we know and people we know from books, movies, and TV. Psychologist David C. Giles and others

who study parasocial relationships were used to these interactions remaining one-sided, as until recently, it was challenging to even find a celeb’s agent’s mailing address to send them a letter (which might only be seen by some assistant to their agent’s assistant). However, as you’ve experienced, that’s changed thanks to social media, which is to say, Beyonce’s on Twitter. But the fact that you can be reached doesn’t mean you owe anyone your time. As soon as you see someone trying to hop the fence from fan to friend, write something brief but kind, such as: “It means a lot to me that you connected with my book. However, I’m swamped with writing deadlines, so I can’t carry on an email exchange, much as I’d like to. Hope you understand!” This message establishes a boundary, but without violating your fan’s dignity. Dignity, explains international conflict resolution specialist Donna Hicks, is an “internal state of peace” a person feels when they’re treated as if they have value and their feelings matter. Preserving a person’s dignity can actually make the difference between their hating you and their accepting your need to have a life—beyond waiting around to respond to their next 8,000-word email on their dating history, their medication allergies, and their special relationship with cheese.

I’m a single woman in my mid-30s, and I can’t cook. I’m also not interested in learning. My parents are old-school, and this worries them. They keep telling me that “the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.” Is that really still true?—Takeout Queen A man does not stay with a mean woman simply because she makes a mean pot roast: “Yeah, bro, I was all ready to leave her, but then my stomach chained itself to the kitchen table.” However, what really matters for a lot of men is that you’re loving as you pry the plastic lid off their dinner. Being loving is not just a state of mind; it is something you do—a habit of being responsive to what marriage researcher John Gottman calls “bids” from your

partner for your attention, affection, or support. Being responsive involves listening to and engaging with your partner, even in the mundane little moments of life. So when your man grumbles that his hairline is retreating like the Germans at Kursk, you say something sweet or even funny back—as opposed to treating his remark like background noise or snarling something about being late to work.

FREE WILL ASTROLOGY consumerism almost as much as I hate hatred, so I don't offer the following advice lightly: Buy an experience that could help liberate you from the suffering you've had trouble outgrowing. Or buy a toy that can thaw the frozen joy that’s trapped within your out-of-date sadness. Or buy a connection that might inspire you to express a desire you need help in expressing. Or buy an influence that will motivate you to shed a belief or theory that has been cramping your lust for life. Or all of the above! (And if buying these things isn't possible, consider renting.)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): These days you have an enhanced ability to arouse the appreciation and generosity of your allies, friends and loved ones. The magnetic influence you're emanating could even start to evoke the interest and inquiries of mere acquaintances and random strangers. Be discerning about how you wield that potent stuff! On the other hand, don’t be shy about using it to attract all the benefits it can bring you. It’s OK to be a bit greedier for goodies than usual as long as you’re also a bit more compassionate than usual. GEMINI (May 21-June 20): I bet that a healing influence will arrive from an unexpected direction and begin to work its subtle but intense magic before anyone realizes what's happening. I predict that the bridge you're building will lead to a place that's less flashy but more useful than you imagined. And I'm guessing that although you may initially feel jumbled by unforeseen outcomes, those outcomes will ultimately be redemptive. Hooray for lucky flukes and weird switcheroos! CANCER (June 21-July 22): Born under the

astrological sign of Cancer, Franz Kafka is regarded as one of the 20th century's major literary talents. Alas, he made little money from his writing. Among the day jobs he did to earn a living were stints as a bureaucrat at insurance companies. His superiors there praised his efforts. “Superb administrative talent,” they said about him. Let's use this as a takeoff point to meditate on your destiny, Cancerian. Are you good at skills you’re not passionate about? Are you admired and acknowledged for having qualities that aren't of central importance to you? If so, the coming weeks and months will be a favorable time to explore this apparent discrepancy. I believe you will have the power to get closer to doing more of what you love to do.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): If you really wanted to, you

could probably break the world's record for most words typed per minute with the nose (103 characters in 47 seconds). I bet you could also shatter a host of other marks, as well, like eating the most hot chiles in two minutes, or weaving the biggest garland using defunct iPhones, or dancing the longest on a tabletop while listening to a continuous loop of Nirvana's song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” But I hope you won't waste your soaring capacity for excellence on meaningless stunts like those. I’d rather see you break your own personal records for accomplishments like effective communications, high-quality community-building and smart career moves.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Isaac Newton (1643-1727)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): “Every so often, a painter has to destroy painting,” said 20th-century abstract expressionist painter Willem de Kooning. “Cézanne did it. Picasso did it with cubism. Then Pollock did it. He busted our idea of a picture all to hell.” In de Kooning’s view, these “destructive” artists performed a noble service. They demolished

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Mayflies are aquatic

insects with short life spans. Many species live less than 24 hours, even though the eggs they lay may take three years to hatch. I suspect this may be somewhat of an apt metaphor for your future, Scorpio. A transitory or short-duration experience could leave a legacy that will ripen for a long time before it hatches. But that’s where the metaphor breaks down. When your legacy has fully ripened— when it becomes available as a living presence—I bet it will last a long time.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): When a critic at Rolling Stone magazine reviewed the Beatles’ Abbey Road in 1969, he said some of the songs were "so heavily overproduced that they are hard to listen to." He added, "Surely they must have enough talent and intelligence to do better than this." Years later, however, Rolling Stone altered its opinion, naming Abbey Road the 14th best album of all time. I suspect, Sagittarius, that you’re in a phase with metaphorical resemblances to the earlier assessment. But I’m reasonably sure that this will ultimately evolve into being more like the later valuation—and it won’t take years. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): According to my

analysis of the astrological omens, love should be in full bloom. You should be awash in worthy influences that animate your beautiful passion. So how about it? Are you swooning and twirling and uncoiling? Are you overflowing with a lush longing to celebrate the miracle of being alive? If your answer is yes, congratulations. May your natural intoxication levels continue to rise. But if my description doesn’t match your current experience, you may be out of sync with cosmic rhythms. And if that’s the case, please take emergency measures. Escape to a sanctuary where you can shed your worries and inhibitions and maybe even your clothes. Get drunk on undulating music as you dance yourself into a dreamy love revelry.

LET'S GROW TOGETHER!

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): “Life never gives you

anything that's all bad or all good.” So proclaimed the smartest Aquarian 6-year-old girl I know as we kicked a big orange ball around a playground. I agreed with her! “Twenty years from now,” I told her, “I'm going to remind you that you told me this heartful truth.” I didn't tell her the corollary that I’d add to her axiom, but I'll share it with you: If anything or anyone or seems to be all bad or all good, you're probably not seeing the big picture. There are exceptions, however! For example, I bet you will soon experience or are already experiencing a graceful stroke of fate that’s very close to being all good.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): “Enodation” is an old, nearly obsolete English word that refers to the act of untying a knot or solving a knotty problem. “Enodous” means “free of knots.” Let's make these your celebratory words of power for the month of May, Pisces. Speak them out loud every now and then. Invoke them as holy chants and potent prayers leading you to discover the precise magic that will untangle the kinks and snarls you most need to untangle. Homework: What’s the most important question you need an answer for in the next five years? Deliver your best guess to me. Freewillastrology.com.

was among history’s three most influential scientists. Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) has been described as the central figure in modern philosophy. Henry James (1843-1916) is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in English literature. John Ruskin (18191900) was a prominent art critic and social thinker. What did these four men have in common? They never had sex with anyone. They were virgins when they died. I view this fact with alarm. What does it mean that Western culture is so influenced by the ideas of men who lacked this fundamental initiation? With that as our context, I make this assertion: If you hope to make good decisions in the coming weeks, you must draw on the wisdom you have gained from being sexually entwined with other humans.

entrenched ideas about the nature of painting, thus liberating their colleagues and descendants from stale constraints. Judging from the current astrological omens, Libra, I surmise the near future will be a good time for you to wreak creative destruction in your own field or sphere. What progress and breakthroughs might be possible when you dismantle comfortable limitations?
