for business and most need help from all of us: the restaurants that are trying to make ends meet with a combination of takeout and primarily outdoor dining, and the local shops that have rewired themselves for shopper safety during the pandemic, but need to get people back in the door. You’ll find their stories of adaptation and survival here, too—whether it’s the local wine industry that’s endured fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains or the art community that has had to quickly adjust when its biggest event of the year, the

Open Studios Art Tour, became impossible to put on due to Covid-19 concerns. For many of us, the saving grace during the long lockdown was being able to get outside. While the fires and subsequent smoky air took that away for a while, everyone is getting outdoors again, and this issue also features a lot of ways to do that. From trails to farmers markets to bike rentals to surf spots, this is the Santa Cruz County guide we all need right now.

very year, we publish a Visitor’s Guide to help people discover the best things to do and places to go. But in 2020, the Covid-19 pandemic has devastated tourism at a time when local businesses need support more than ever. How to help? Well, first of all, you’ll find we’ve revamped the format of this issue considerably. While we may not be getting a lot of visitors right now, hopefully this guide can help locals explore Santa Cruz County, too. We’ve also focused on the industries that are open

hen the CZU Lightning Complex fire ravaged the Santa Cruz Mountains, local winemakers could only hope and pray that fire would spare their homes, vineyards, and winemaking facilities. Five wineries—including Big Basin Vineyards, Beauregard Vineyards, Hallcrest Vineyards, and McHenry Vineyard in the San Lorenzo Valley, Bonny Doon and Woodside/Skyline growing regions— were in or near evacuation zones due to the CZU Lightning Complex fire. Ryan Beauregard, winemaker at Beauregard Vineyards, found himself in the thick of the raging flames. “I wasn’t leaving. I have a life of dedication to this mountain,” he says.

Sending his family to safety, he slept outside in the smoke the first four nights. “Woke people up, drove around looking for Cal Fire.” But Cal Fire resources were overwhelmed. Beauregard joined up with many of his fellow Bonny Doon landowners to help out. “There were so many fires. First couple of days felt like we were alone. Smart and fearless people with heavy equipment stayed. Multiple brigades; eight guys in my neighborhood.” Beauregard helped make a fire break around the winery. In the end, it worked. “It was a combined effort,” he says proudly. “The good news is that our winery and our family homes are still standing. Our vineyards have had minimal

physical damage, though the crop is destroyed,” he says. Beauregard is now working to harvest his prized, all-organic Bald Mountain Chardonnay. Grapes from beyond the smoke’s reach also came to the rescue for Beauregard, who was able to purchase Pinot Noir grapes from Hirsch Vineyard on the Sonoma coast. “I also bought fruit to make the Lost Weekend wine from 130-year-old vines in Antioch, plus Zayante and Regan vineyards,” he says. Last month, Birichino’s Alex Krause got up at 3am “to pick the oldest Cinsault vineyard on the planet, and then on to our second pick of the day by 5:30am. We are sad we won’t make any red Cinsault from 2020, nor Carignane from Montague, but boy, the Vin Gris

Santa Cruz Mountains wineries show courage and resilience in the face of fire BY CHRISTINA WATERS

THE VINE PROVIDENCE Big Basin Vineyards’ crop was scorched in the fire, but winemaker Bradley Brown calls the fact that the winery itself was spared ‘miraculous.’ will be good. Fingers crossed,” he says. Krause is grateful to fire crews from Los Angeles who “parked outside our tasting room last month. One crew drove 3,000 miles from New Jersey to help.” Nicole Walsh—winemaker for her label Ser, as well as for Bonny Doon Vineyard— began harvesting Orange Muscat during one of the intense heat waves in mid-August, “just at the time the smoke from the fires was reaching Paso Robles.” While the ripeness wasn’t what she wanted, she was glad she got her grapes in before the smoke arrived there. The custom-crafted house that winemaker Bradley Brown lived in next to his Big Basin Vineyards burned to the ground. “Our winery has been miraculously spared, but the house

is tragically gone, and the vineyard has been badly scorched,” he says. The events leading up to Brown’s Aug. 18 evacuation came fast and hard. “Winds started whipping up late in the day, Pescadero was already ablaze. Helicopters flew overhead and told us over bullhorns to evacuate, and evacuate immediately. That was Tuesday night. Then it hit Eagle Rock and then down to Bonny Doon and toward Boulder Creek. We tried to get back up to save things, but couldn’t.” Brown had just finished bottling some 2019 vintages on the same day that he was evacuated. “I see it as a setback,” he says, “but it’s not fatal.” On the brighter side, at Alfaro Family Vineyards winemaker Richard Alfaro assured me “there’s no doom and

gloom here. Micro fermentations from Corralitos and Trout Gulch have smelled beautiful. First batches back from the lab have tested clean for smoke taint, as did our neighbor’s.” Alfaro did lose some fruit due to seven days of 100-plusdegree weather. “We dropped [left in the fields] all the sunburned or raisined fruit. The fruit that was picked is exceptional.” Given his large acreage of vines, Alfaro’s grapes will find their way into neighboring wines. “We have picked for ourselves and for Marty Mathis, Big Basin, Ceritas Arnot-Roberts, Jamie Kutch and Fernwood. Crazy year. We are making the best of it. We are fortunate to be far from the fires. The devastation of properties and grapes of my friends in the mountains is so sad.”

Santa Cruz County’s most popular art event of the year, Open Studios, finds a new way for the public to discover local artists

BY CHRISTINA WATERS

T

his year’s extremely unusual circumstances have led to a radical rethinking of the wildly popular Open Studios Art Tour, the annual three-week vision quest that allows the public at large to visit the workspaces of artists throughout Santa Cruz County. The format has changed, but the 34-year-old mission remains the same: to provide a showcase for over 300 artists and their exciting variety of creative work. At the helm for 17 years, the event’s director Ann Ostermann knew all the ropes of organizing and publicizing the event. Until this year. “I really had to pivot,” she admits with a laugh. Nixing a virtual tour, Ostermann’s board agreed that nothing replaces actually meeting artists—so they wouldn’t call it Open Studios. Instead, organizers have launched a new website—the Visual Arts Network—designed to bring artists and art lovers together online. “Basically, it’s a curated web directory 350 members strong,” she explains. “There’s a landing page that people can go to and then look for

artists by name or by medium. They’ll click on those links and each artist will have a page.” Artists will be able to showcase and market their works with images, artist statements, contact information and links to websites, social media pages, and sales portals. “We’re the middlemen for those links, which could lead to studio visits by appointment.” Stephanie Martin, an awardwinning printmaker, has participated in Open Studios for the past 14 years. And she already feels its absence on her calendar. “How strange it is to be feeling the changing season and light in September and not be preparing for Open Studios,” she says. “I’m excited about the Visual Arts Network, and hopeful that people might be moved to seek art during these hard times.” An important feature of the new Visual Arts Network is that the web directory is up all year long. “The artist will be able to refresh pages and add new images throughout the year,” explains Ostermann. She says that after surveying over 100 participating artists, she found

that only 45% of them had websites. Most of them, she discovered, had Instagram, Etsy, or Facebook presences. “And many of them had exposure at in-person venues, fairs, and events and hadn’t needed websites. Now they will have one. We’re offering other features, such as workshops on how to use Instagram for the art business, and social media development instruction by experts like Karen Kefauver.” The number of artists who have signed on reveals how important this mega-website is right now. “We charged a $65 flat fee for the entire year,” says Ostermann. “We kept it affordable. I’ve learned to see silver linings wherever I can,” she says. “We’ll keep this up all year. It’s good visibility for the artists, and newcomers will be learning new skills. We’re going to do a big ad campaign for the launch, then a large postcard mailing in November, and another ad push in the spring.” Find the Visual Arts Network at santacruzopenstudios.com.

AFTER THE FIRE

By Datta Khalsa, Broker Surveying the burned areas of our county in the wake of the recent fire is an eye-opening journey, particularly when you hear the back stories of what happened. Many of us have colleagues, clients, family and friends impacted who have shared accounts of heroic acts by not only the firefighters, but also determined individuals and their neighbors helping each other or even total strangers save their homes, often armed with little more than a hose or a shovel. In a related twist on the standard real estate experience, I showed a home last week off of Alba Road that had been saved by the efforts of a neighborhood civilian crew, even as the house on the opposite side of the road burned to the ground and the burn line had made its way to the front yard. This made for an eerie spectacle when showing the place to its prospective next owners. More eyebrow-raising still was the fact that there were already two offers circling—a clear byproduct from the loss of 925 homes from an already-depleted housing inventory. And with the power and water cut off by the ravages of the fire, their escrow will likely not be able to close until services are restored so that the home can be cleared for occupancy. For those who have lost their homes, the focus now turns to the question of whether to rebuild or relocate, and for them the first major challenge they come up against in this process is in dealing with the insurance companies, which can often be more challenging than the fire.

Locally owned for over 50 years, offering the most unique and healthy products in Santa Cruz. Delicious bakery, hot foods, organic juices, a full coffee bar, a deli with homemade food, organic produce galore, and a massive vitamin, supplement and cosmetics department. Feed Your Sol — Staff of Life.

Many are choosing to hire an attorney or an independent third-party adjuster to take on the insurance companies, instead of agreeing to settle for 50 to 70 cents on the dollar. They help people collect the full benefits under the policy, including extended replacement coverage, like-kind materials, code upgrades, and other overlooked expenses like architectural and engineering fees. When calculating construction costs, they may also negotiate a factor called demand surge based on historic 20-40% increases that have occurred in the years following similar large-scale fires and other natural disasters. Add to this proper handling of expenses arising from loss of use which can span up to 3 years, like hotel and meal expenditures, over normal mileage reimbursement, furniture rental and full comparable replacement home rental, plus knowledge of how to properly file for items such as jewelry and guns—which may have limits under theft but not under fire—and it often makes sense to hire an expert to negotiate on your behalf. After collecting on their claims some may choose to relocate, since under most policies the insured has no obligation to rebuild after getting their settlement, and they may not feel like going back based on the loss of their longtime neighborhood, not to mention the fear of ever being able to get reasonably priced insurance again. In the midst of all of this is an underlying gratitude for what remains, and for the many heroes both in private and public service who helped to save what they were able to save. And the hope of new beginnings in the wake of unspeakable loss.

Moran Lake

The Esplanade, Capitola Village

East Cliff Drive, Live Oak

It typically gets voted best beach in California. And with its close proximity to the Capitola Wharf, plus a slew of great restaurants and bars around, it’s pretty much one big slice of paradise. To avoid the crowds, the beach on the other side of the wharf is usually less crowded. With free shuttle service to your car, you can’t beat it.

It’s one of the nicest beaches in the county, with great views and easy access. A secluded treasure.

Castle Beach East Cliff Drive at Seabright Avenue

The castle may have fallen over, but that hasn’t affected Castle Beach’s great sandy stretch. Located between the Boardwalk and the harbor, it’s a great place to let the saltwater air flow through your hair and the ocean lap over your feet.

SANTA CRUZ VISITORS GIUDE | GOODTIMES.SC | 2020

Manresa State Beach and Sunset State Beach La Selva Beach and Watsonville, 831.761.1795, 831.763.7062

Keep your eyes peeled for dolphins that regularly surf the waves, and the priceless sand dollars that wash up on shore.

New Brighton State Beach

1500 Park Ave, Capitola, 831.464.6329

A great campground nestled in coastal cypress and pines makes

this a beach-camper’s paradise. The campground is always full in the summer, so making reservations is a must. A good spot for long summer walks, especially during low tide.

North Coast Beaches Just a few miles north of the Santa Cruz city limits are some of the most beautiful miles of coastline in the world. Most beaches can be accessed by dirt trails or small roads.

Panther Beach Highway 1, about 1 mile south of Davenport

Known for its beautiful rock formations and shiny, clean sand, Panther Beach is a memorable adventure. A take-your-breathaway beach.

SURF SPOTS SOUTH COUNTY Capitola Jetty

When the swell is up, this spot is the place to be. A nice left careens in front of the jetty, and a turn to the right can go on forever, assuming your skag doesn’t hit the kelp-infested water.

The Hook

Named for the copious amounts of kelp in the lineup that “hooks” around skags and booties, this nice little point break has a loyal following.

Manresa/La Selva

Manresa is a mélange of peaks, valleys and sandbars, but often the place is epic, breaking left and right and all over. Expect a long, grueling paddle during the wintertime to the outside.

Pleasure Point

Like its moniker, this place is pleasure for just about everyone. As a result, it’s generally crowded with everyone from groms to experts, longboarders to ultra-thin glassed rippers.

SURF SPOTS SANTA CRUZ Cowell

The bunny slope of surfing gets its fair share of beginners, but it also has nice, sloping waves that go on forever. Easy access and easy attitudes make Cowell stand out.

Steamer Lane One of the best classic breaks in

SANTA CRUZ VISITORS GIUDE | GOODTIMES.SC | 2020

the world, Steamer Lane more than lives up to its reputation. With four reef breaks rolled into one spot—The Point, Middle Peak, The Slot, and Indicators—the Lane has it all.

Natural Bridges

The best tube rides available if the conditions are just right. It’s a speedy right that peaks over an outer reef and peels toward the beach.

SURF SPOTS NORTH COUNTY Three Mile

A great reef break that is usually uncrowded (until now), especially during the weekdays. Three Mile, as with most North Coast spots south of Davenport, includes a long walk through brussels sprouts fields.

Scott’s Creek

From long paddles and strong currents to sharky waters and unpredictable peaks, Scott’s isn’t for the faint of heart or arms. But when it goes off, it’s heaven on water.

Waddell Creek

Similar conditions for Waddell Creek as for Scott’s, except during the summer and early fall, when Waddell is one of the world’s premier windand kite-surfing spots.
