atrick Ellis was at a crossroads, his future hanging in the balance. Having been expelled from San Benito High School and San Andreas Continuation School, Ellis ended up at Pinnacle Court Community School during his sophomore year. Ellis, who is the executive director of the Chamberlain’s Children Center, says being at Pinnacle was pretty much his last chance to turn things around. Fortunately for the 37-year-old Ellis, he had some quality educators wanting to making a difference in his troubled life. The most impactful person in Ellis’ life, Kip Ward, who was a teacher at Pinnacle, took Ellis under his wing. Through dozens of conversations, Ward showed that he truly cared about Ellis and what he was going through. ➝ 6

CRITICAL ACCLAIM Chamberlain’s Children Center uses a unique approach to empower at-risk children.
6
“When I first met Kip, he took the time to listen and work through some of the issues I was going through,” says Ellis. “He was always there for me, and showed up with a consistent and positive attitude about how things worked. I had never met a teacher quite like him before—someone who was so relatable and seemed to understand what is going on in students’ lives. Within a short amount of time, I was able to feel motivated to do well and began to feel better about myself and my past.” As a result, Ellis wound up returning to and graduating from San Andreas in 1998. Ellis also credited then-Pinnacle Principal Tim Foley and teacher Frank Perez for building positive relationships with him, an impact that still reverberates today. “Those three people made a huge difference for me,” Ellis says. “They were able to show me how powerful relationships can be to help a child pull out of a spiral. They helped me to have hope and realize my potential—something I was really needing at the time.”
So perhaps one shouldn’t be surprised that Ellis wound up being the executive director at Chamberlain’s Children Center, a renowned and critically acclaimed organization, which uses a holistic approach to empower at-risk children to move forward in their lives and develop skills that lean them toward self-sufficiency. A state licensed and nationally accredited facility, Chamberlain’s Children Center uses therapy, case management, schooling and residential treatment to give kids and teens all the tools they need to eventually become independent and thrive. Even though Ellis didn’t go through Chamberlain’s, his situation as a teenager isn’t that much different than many of the kids and teens who are staying at Chamberlain’s today. That is why Ellis is so passionate about what Chamberlain’s Children Center represents and the impact they have made, in Hollister and beyond. Chamberlain’s receives and takes in a number of children referrals from social service agencies in San
Mateo, Santa Cruz, Monterey and San Joaquin counties.
“Chamberlain’s has long stood for promoting positive relationships for children who need it the most,” he says. “We’re working with one of the most vulnerable population in the country, and in each troubled child’s life the one common thing in them building resiliency is they’ve had positive mentors and role models and trusting individuals in their lives. That has long been a focus of what Chamberlain’s stands for.”
With the exception of a brief stint in Southern California, Ellis has worked at Chamberlain’s since he was 20, starting as a child work trainee. “I worked with youth and was absolutely blown away that I was getting paid to build relationships with kids,” he says. “It was really an eye opening experience for me, and helped me realize what I wanted to do for a living and the passion I had for the community. It was about giving back to kids who need much more than what the community can typically offer them.”
After a couple of years at his initial position, Ellis was promoted to after school program coordinator before being named the program coordinator. When former executive director Robert Freiri left for a job in San Mateo near the end of 2016, Ellis was named the interim executive director. He served in that role before the interim tag was removed in the first week of April. What makes Chamberlain’s unique and effective, Ellis says, is that it’s not uncommon for employees to spend time off the clock to attend key milestone moments of the children they’ve mentored or worked with. “In one instance, we had children who were interested in learning more about faith,” he says. “A few of them decided to get baptized, and so we sent out a mailer to all the staff letting them know it was happening. We had a large number show up on their own time, just like a parent would. It’s about building trust and relationships, and proving to kids that adults can be trusted and there are many good people in this world who care about them.”

on for about 30 years,” says Saxton. “It’s hard to say when it originally began—it just grew. In the original days everyone just said, ‘Hey let’s have a garage sale in the last day of August.’ So it’s been an interesting evolution.” Attendees will enjoy many activities including vendor booths, “Art in the Park,” and the “Garage Sale Alley,” that heralds back to the event’s humble beginnings. A special Kid Zone, introduced in 2016, is filled with fun activities for children including a rock wall, petting zoo, pony rides and a second stage dedicated to kids entertainment. “We are very excited to bring it back this year,” says Saxton. “More fun stuff for kids to do that does not cost anything.”

he biggest day of the year is quickly approaching for residents and visitors of Aromas as Aromas Day returns with activities, entertainment and local flavor. “It is like stepping back in time to a little small town,” describes Jan Saxton, coordinator of the event since 2003. “It’s the kind of small town event that just doesn’t happen everywhere anymore.” Aromas Day features tasty treats including the old-fashioned pancake breakfast at the Aromas Grange Hall and the food court that supports local nonprofits and all-day free entertainment on the main stage. “In it’s current form, it’s been going
This annual free event is an ongoing tradition originating with community members coming together to hold an annual downtown garage sale the last weekend in August. The event has evolved and changed over multiple decades and responsibility for the event has changed hands several times over the years, beginning with the Aromas Service Club which ran the affair for two decades. Currently, Aromas Day is organized by a volunteer team of Aromas residents and is underwritten by the Aromas Fraternal Order of Eagles, who organize, advertise, and provide the free entertainment. Aromas Day is the biggest event of the year for the Aromas Eagles. Booths are provided free for local non-profits as a fundraising opportunity. Last year over $15,000 was raised, which Saxton notes, “is the whole point of doing it.” Parking is available by donation in the main parking lot on Aromas Road next to the A.R. Wilson Sports Park entrance with free wagon rides to and from the event. The parking lot is the safest and most convenient place to park as all of the major streets in town will be closed and occupied by pedestrians. In addition, all parking lot proceeds go to the Aromas School Home and School Club to fund the sixth grade science camp allowing every student to attend. Attendees are urged to wear their walking shoes, bring umbrellas in case it is sunny, and jackets in case it is windy and foggy. About 5,0006,000 people attend Aromas Day. “The atmosphere on the street is very laid back and friendly, there is a nice mix of people,” says Saxton, “It is a very diverse crowd, very harmonious and laid back, and I love it.”

e’re blessed to live in an area of wonderful festivals. Beyond our famous Garlic Festival, music buffs might look no further than the recently held San Jose Jazz Summer Fest or the upcoming Monterey Jazz Festival (September 16-17). But if
you’re looking for something a bit more far afield, and if the pocketbook allows—I highly recommend an excursion to Spain in July for the Heineken Jazzaldia in San Sebastían, Spain. I recently returned from attending this Festival, for the fifth year straight. A friend and colleague who has been going for 20 years recommended it
to me, and warned me: “once you go, you’ll want to go every year”, and it seems that he was prophetic. The year was the 52nd Annual Jazzaldia, and they certainly have the formula right. The setting is wonderful, in the parte vieja of the Basque city of San Sebastían, on the north coast of Spain, near the border to France. The concerts are presented on a variety of stages—on the beach, in the Kursaal (beautiful modern auditorium), the Eugenia Theater (older, elegant, great acoustics), the Plaza de la Trinidad (outdoor venue) and at a modern museum—all great venues. The programming is top notch, the people wonderful, the Basque cuisine one of the world’s finest. All combine to give a fantastic experience - even for people like me who are “not big festival-type people”! Musical highlights include Charles Lloyd (California resident!) receiving the annual Jazzaldia award for lifetime achievement, the Wayne Shorter Quartet, Santa Cruz native Donny McCaslin and his Quartet, Gregory Porter, Abdullah Ibrahim (doing a breathtakingly beautiful set, featuring an incredible horn section featuring Terence Blanchard), Japanese piano sensation Hiromi with Venezuelan harpist Edmar Castañeda, Herbie Hancock, Ernie Watts Quartet and many others. Pop acts on the big stages included The Pretenders and Bryan Ferry (both did impressive shows!). Yes, being on the Atlantic Coast, it does rain sporadically, and often. One wears a poncho with a hood— and just goes with it, as the musicians play on. Hard to imagine a better setting. Will I return next year? Already planning on it—and continuing to work on improving my Spanish! Hear Brad Stone’s regular jazz program “The Creative Source” (produced here in Gilroy), featuring new jazz releases, every week on the UK’s Soulandjazz.com. The program streams on demand.

time a bit unconventionally. When I am not ‘working’, I love to start my day by taking a long walk with my dog. It’s great for mind and body and sets me up to be productive the entire day. I spend many hours volunteering at my daughter’s school. I also enjoy spending time with and vacationing with my family, hiking and dinners with close friends and family.
What is your most memorable transaction? In the past, my husband and I have helped a few families get into home ownership by purchasing homes on their behalf, renovating the homes, and then ‘flipping’ the home to these families. These are memorable transactions to me since these families could not compete with all cash investors swooping up distressed inventory. We were able to provide an opportunity to buyers who were finding it difficult to compete getting into a home. To this day I still get calls from these clients who appreciate the opportunity of what we did for them. Linda Sue Scott

What drew you to real estate? I had worked in Human Resources for about 10 years. Around that time my husband and I decided to start a family; so, I decided to jump off of the traditional corporate ladder. That eventually led me to real estate—teaming with my twin sister starting in 2001. In 2007, I obtained my broker’s license and I’ve been operating as an independent broker since. After working
in Human Resources for so many years, it was a natural progression getting into real estate. I pull from that experience and knowledge of working with people on a daily basis.
What do you do when you are not working? Being in real estate, I think we are always ‘on-call’ and rarely never ‘not-working’. But, this business does allow for us to coordinate our
I feel the most beneficial thing I do is simply sitting down and explaining the buying and selling process to my clients. Many buyers and sellers don’t understand what an ‘escrow’ is or even a ‘contingency period’. Empowering my clients with knowledge of the buying and selling process before it starts makes everything go smoother, less-stressful, and seem a lot less daunting.
