hen the Hollister House Bar and Grill opened on Feb. 10, owner Jack Barbieri was cautiously optimistic that business would be booming in no time. And that’s exactly what happened. In the first several weeks, patrons flooded the restaurant—especially in the late night hours. Hollister House Bar and Grill has several things going for it, including being one of the few late-night dining/drinking options in San Benito County. “Business is doing pretty good and has pretty much met my expectations,” Barbieri says. “I truly thank the people of Hollister for their extensive support.” ➝ 6

The restaurant, located at 500 San Benito St, occupies the same building that housed the Pendergrass, a restaurant that went out of business in October 2013. The space was vacant for 3 ½ years before the 56-year-old Barbieri—a threeyear Hollister resident—bought the entire two-story building and started renovating it in July 2016. “The place was an absolute disaster when we took it over,” says Barbieri. Barbieri’s wife, Danielle, and their son, Joseph, 30, and daughter, Teressa, 23, are often in the restaurant helping out in every phase of the operation. “I did the majority of the work, and had some close friends help me.” Barbieri spent countless hours painting and scraping the inside of the building, a laborious process that took several months to complete. Barbieri says he had no qualms about opening a restaurant in downtown Hollister, an area that has seen its fair share of businesses come and go by the wayside. However, because Barbieri has a strong business acumen—despite never being a previous restaurant owner, Barbieri has
more than 20 years of experience as an owner of automotive shops and a toner cartridge company—he knew those skills were transferable to the restaurant business. Where some people see downtown Hollister as a graveyard for businesses, Barbieri saw a place of vast potential. “I see downtown as a place that going to be coming back and booming,” he says. “For me, there was no opportunity for failure. I’ve been in business for more than 20 years, and I’m a pretty good judge of what will work and what won’t work.” Barbieri says his son and daughter “coaxed” him into opening up a restaurant. They’ve been a huge help; in fact, Joseph was manning the restaurant while Jack was away for the Labor Day Weekend. Jack Barbieri says Hollister House Bar and Grill is a steakhouse with a full bar featuring American cuisine with an Italian flair. Among downtown businesses, it has no trouble sticking out. Drivers and pedestrians can see through the shiny windows and see a bustling scene, filled with customers either

The macaroni and stuffed gouda bites ($9) can also be purchased separately from the Bar Bites menu, which also includes Fat Tire cheese dip with fresh baked salted pretzels ($10). An average tab for two with drinks is around $60. Barbieri says chef Victor Villafuerte—who formerly worked at the 19th Hole in Tres Pinos—has come up with a great menu, one that satisfies even the most voracious of palates. Barbieri makes it a point to mingle with customers, receive feedback from them and implement changes when needed. “I’m much more old school than most. If people are not satisfied with something, they can come talk with me,” Barbieri says. “That is the way to fix a problem—not to go straight to social media and bash on someone or something. Overall, we’ve had a very positive response from people, and we’re striving everyday to make it better.”

conversing or watching one of five large flat screen TVs. The Hollister House Bar and Grill receives a steady flow of customers throughout the day; however, it’s at night when the place gets really busy. With an outstanding and varied drink selection—30 wines, 26 brands of vodka and several beers on tap—customers have an extensive drink menu to choose from. On its website, the hours for the bar are listed as 1am to closing. This can mean anywhere from 10 or 11pm on a weekday to 1am on a weekend. Most of the time around the bar, it’s standing room only. “We have those hours—that way I’m not pinning people down to leave,” Barbieri says. “We’re open until 1am on most weekends.” On the food front, Barbieri says customers rave about the restaurant’s tri-tip salad ($14), burgers and porterhouse steak ($50 for two people). Barbieri says the menu features hearty, rich food with good-sized portions. “You’ll definitely be getting your money’s worth,” he says.

Rapazzini’s petite sirah is hot By BEV STENEHJEM
R
apazzini Winery has been a visual icon along Highway 101 since 1962 when it first opened. The Larson brothers, Alex and Charlie, purchased the winery in 2000 to continue the long tradition of fine winemaking. Acting as sentries, two standard poodles were regally seated at the entrance of the tasting room. The tasting menu is extraordinarily diverse, divided into Whites, Reds, Sparkling and Dessert and World Famous Garlic Wine. In addition to better known varietals such as chardonnay, pinot noir, zinfandel and merlot, are the rarely seen varietals that include grignolini, sangiovese, barbera and carignane. My tasting started with the 2016 Grignolini Rose ($20), a delightful
summer sipper with notes of peach and pear that finished with a taste of buttered rice. Moving on to the reds, I tried their 2013 Pinot Noir ($24) out of Santa Cruz mountains. A swirl of my glass showed off the deep ruby color and fresh strawberry aromas. For me, the show-stopping wine is the 2012 Petite Sirah ($32), from Santa Clara Valley. Made from grapes that grew during the hot, sunny summer of 2011; the result is an inky dark, full-bodied wine, with lots of fruit up front, a smoky tobacco middle and a peppery finish. You’ll have to add your name to a waitlist for one of their top-selling dessert wines, Apribella ($20), an apricot fruit wine, that always sells out. The tasting room has a large assortment of gifts, garlic treats and their world-famous garlic wine.

hen a group of past performers discover their beloved, but crumbling, Broadway theater is scheduled for demolition, they gather for one last hurrah in their old haunt. Based on the famous Ziegfeld Follies of Broadway, stars of the theatrical revue “Weismann's Follies” reminisce about their time on stage in South Valley Civic Theatre’s (SVCT) performance of Follies by Stephen Sondheim. Unlike most of SVCT’s shows, which rely on exciting set designs, Follies is anchored by elaborate costumes and musical numbers. The show’s costumers Michelle Griffin and Adrianne Wilkinson
worked together on the designs for the cast of 36. The actors, ages 17-70, perform much of the show as duets. “The 12 Follies ‘Ghosts’ each have a costume that is representative of a particular decade from the 1910s through the 1940s,” says Griffin, who researched costuming for each of the periods represented. With $2,000 and six weeks to produce what took original Broadway costumers two years and a budget of more than $100,000 to pull off, Griffin says they are proud of the results. “Each ‘Ghost’ costume has a unique shape and each elaborate headdress (created by Wilkinson) is very different from the next,” says Griffin. Griffin says they repurposed many products from Dollar Store scouring pads and wire trash cans
to car backrests—anything that could create a shape and be turned into a headpiece—the tallest of which is 3 ½ feet tall. “We used flowers, old jewelry, feathers from old costumes, fairy wings, Christmas ornaments and picks and so much more,” she says. Because the script calls for a limited color palette of black and white, the designers employed the use of texture, sparkle and costume shape to add visual interest. Griffin says the workload was tremendous and unlike any of other 10 shows she’s costumed for. “This has been my biggest challenge and has put forth the most spectacular costumes.” She says they were fortunate to receive a large amount of help from the cast who took part in sewing, painting and rhinestoning of the costumes. A powerful complement to the embellished ensembles is the music that accompanies the performance. “We’ve changed the show through live orchestra, elaborate costumes and very strong vocal, choreography and acting talent,” says the show’s producer Marianne Snook. Though Follies is the seventh show Snook has produced, she says this is her first all-adult cast. Snook says the shows characters reconsider their lives and how they acted as friends. There is a lot of rehashing of relationship issues during the show, which she says is achieved through flashbacks as each of the actors are “paired” with their younger selves—ghost dancers—“playing out the vision of the memory they are speaking of.” Snook says the Sondheim’s songs are emotional and complex, resonating with anyone looking at their life in retrospect. The San Benito Arts Council is now enrolling students for its Fall Semester. Youth Art Studio 1 is taught by professional teaching artist, Stephanie Skow. amboo. Do you love it or hate it? If you don’t think you like bamboo, let me try to change your mind. To start with, bamboo is a collective common name for hundreds (thousands?) of different plants (technically grasses). Bamboo can be less than a foot tall (at maturity) to more than 100 feet tall. The stems can be golden, black, striped or bulbous, the leaves can be from an inch long to 2 feet long, green, striped or edged in yellow or white. In other parts of the world, bamboo is used for building and scaffolding, bridges and fences. In this country you can find bamboo furniture, fishing rods, plant
stakes, clothing and even weapons. But all that is what can be done after harvesting bamboo, and we’re more interested in the ones that are still growing. First, it’s important to know there are two general types of bamboo, running and clumping. The names say it all. Clumping bamboo tends to stay where you plant it. The clump will enlarge a little bit every year, but is polite and willing to obey boundaries. Running bamboo is the type that, when planted in the wrong spot, can become a problem. Bamboo rhizomes can travel underground for as many as 5 feet from the original plant before sending new shoots skyward. The rhizomes can go under and
around many shallow barriers and suddenly appear in a totally unexpected and unfortunate location. Control depends on knowledge. It is possible to control a running bamboo by simply cutting the young rhizomes with a spade plunged straight down into the soil and following up with breaking off any young shoots that arise from the severed roots. I admire the simple beauty of golden bamboo, and love black bamboo for the contrast between black stems and green leaves. These are two of the most familiar running bamboos. Indocalamus tessellatus is much less common, but is one of the drama queens of the bamboo world with the largest leaves of all, reaching almost 2 feet long. Contrast that with Pleioblastus pygmaeus, a dwarf runner. This bamboo has tiny leaves and a short stature. It is such an aggressive grower that it can be used to stabilize slopes and for erosion control. Uncontrolled height can be a rangy 18 inches tall, but occasional mowing will keep it compact and very tidy in appearance. In general, clumping bamboo comes from the more temperate parts of the world, and some are quite tropical. The hardier varieties are worth the search, not only because of their obliging habit, but also for their beauty. Mexican weeping bamboo (Otatea acuminata aztectorum) is a lovely thing, with narrow, delicate leaves and a graceful, weeping habit. Most bamboo grow best in rich, moist soil with regular water when first planted. Some will tolerate considerable drought after they are well established. Many prefer shade to full sun.
