PROUD PEDESTRIAN Jimmy Adams of Wave and Smile Ministries has been waving hello to the people of Hollister for nearly a decade.

NOVEMBER 24, 2017
hen longtime Hollister resident Jimmy Adams Jr. started his weekday morning walks in 2008, he never imagined he would become a blessing for others while receiving constant encouragement himself. The 59-year-old Adams walks five to six miles Monday through Friday from 6-8am—rain or shine. Adams starts his walk from his residence on Clearview Drive before going on two to three different routes, usually down San Benito Street and looping around San Benito High School and Cerra Vista Elementary School. Along the way, Adams smiles and waves at literally every car or pedestrian he comes across. ➝ 6

KIND HEART Adams’ generous spirit has so touched the town of Hollister that he was awarded not one, but two Kindness Awards.

Adams has built a following around town, as he is known as the Waving Man. With a simple smile and wave, Adams puts a smile on people’s faces. Every once in awhile, strangers will approach him in the grocery store and ask him if he’s the Waving Man. On two separate occasions since September, Adams received
a Kindness Award from students at Sacred Heart School—in both instances the students got out of the car to hand Adams an award. It’s moments like that when Adams reflects with a heart of gratitude. “Walking gives me purpose,” says Adams. “When they tell me how much I encourage them, they’re encouraging me, too. It’s been very rewarding.” Interestingly enough, when Adams first started his weekday walks, he didn’t smile and wave at oncoming cars or pedestrians. It actually took a while—Adams doesn’t remember how long—for him to get comfortable enough to wave and smile to strangers. “Once I started doing that, it took off,” says Adams. “I had to work my way into it. Now people all around town see me, and it’s great that I can make their day and they can make my day. It’s nice because they could be having a down day, and a smile and wave can lift their spirits up and their worries away. It keeps me encouraged to keep moving forward.” Adams usually walks on sidewalks,
two in response. Even if Adams doesn’t get a smile in return, he keeps on plugging away. A devout Christian, Adams has proclaimed his walks as an unofficial ministry—the Wave and Smile Ministry. “I love people, and love goes beyond all colors,” he says. “That’s my motto.” Even though Adams is retired, he keeps himself busy. Adams and his wife of 39 years, Dorissa, bake and sell lemon poundcakes. Adams also plays the guitar, sings, preaches and leads bible studies on occasion. Even though Adams would love nothing more than for people to join him on his walks, he hasn’t had any takers so far. That’s fine by Adams, who will continue his Wave and Smile Ministry as long as his body holds up. “My body still hurts from the injuries I’ve had over the years, but I’m not complaining,” says Adams. “I’m going to keep on doing this because I love the people of Hollister, and I look forward to putting a smile on people’s faces every morning.”

but when the conditions are right— say, when the sun is shining—he’ll walk on the edge of the street. “I want to get close to people,” he says. Adams has glaucoma, which causes double vision sometimes. However, Adams’ eye pressure is under control since he started taking prescription eye drops. Adams started walking to help alleviate serious back pain, a result of the cumulative effects from working as an electrician at NASA and the California State Rehabilitation Department. Adams had to retire in 2008 due to an irregular heartbeat and balky back—his L4 and L5 vertebrae started rubbing—and his doctor recommended regular walks as part of a physical therapy program. “I didn’t want to do any surgeries, and walking was a natural way to relieve the pain,” Adams says. “I still have back pain, but nothing like when I first hurt it.” When Adams waves at passers-by, he usually gets a wave or

fter a scorching summer, the milder fall temperatures are a welcome relief. A languid and restful peace infuses autumn days as though, still lingering in our DNA, we feel a remnant urge to seek refuge and bed down for the winter. It's a perfect time to return to the inland trails we set aside during a searing summer. Fall has special charms for us to enjoy. Yes, the hills are brown, the creeks are dry, and the flowers are gone, but the murk is clearing from our sky, and the crowds
have gone home. If you are feeling the itch for an autumn stroll, here are a few of my favorite late season walks close to home. Coast Range trees whisper their autumn hues compared to the color-clamor of the eastern hardwood forests, but our western sycamores, bigleaf maples, white alders, and Fremont cottonwoods can still dazzle. These trees thrive where water flows, and one of my favorite creekside walks is along Hunting Hollow Road in Henry Coe State Park. Even the drive out Gilroy Hot Springs Road that follows Coyote Creek to the park's
Hunting Hollow entrance is well worth a fall visit. This level trail—a rarity in Coe Park—features some magnificent sycamores often dangling wisps of lichen like Christmas tree tinsel. A short walk from the trailhead, look for one sycamore in particular that has found a loophole in the Law of Gravity, somehow holding up a massive trunk reaching so far horizontally that it simply must fall. The paved trail and highway noise along Coyote Creek Parkway are a stark contrast to Hunting Hollow's peace and quiet, but I am always surprised by the nooks and crannies of fall color and creekside beauty one can find there. Most people start from the visitor center at the end of Malaguerra Avenue in the northwest corner of Morgan Hill, but there are several spots off Monterey Road north of Morgan Hill where colorful sycamores show off: the end of Burnett Avenue, Coyote Creek Golf Drive (a half mile north of Palm Avenue), and Metcalf Park (I cross Metcalf Road and walk south toward Coyote Ranch). Bald Peaks separates the headwaters of Llagas Creek and Calero Creek; one headed south to Monterey Bay, the other northbound toward the San Francisco Bay. It is along this rolling ridge that Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve and Calero County Park join forces to offer a combination of creekside trails that pop with autumn color and far-reaching ridge top views. Figueroa Trail on the Calero side and the Longwall Canyon Trail on the Rancho Cañada side follow creek beds colored with maples and sycamores. If you are feeling chipper, both trails join others that climb 1,000 feet to the top of Bald Peaks where your reward is a view of the San Francisco skyline and Mt. Tamalpais. For now, resist the urge to bed down for the winter, and embrace the crisp and colorful days of autumn.

s the winter season approaches, signs of its coming are brought in stages: The appearance of autumn foliage. The longer nights. The comings and goings of Thanksgiving decor. The crowds swarming department stores. And just like clock-work—the choir’s heard singing. One of these choirs is San Benito Oriana Chorale, which has been gracing San Benito County with its talents for 32 years. Founded in 1985, the chorale was named after Queen Elizabeth the First, who was a patron of the musical arts. It was originally led
by Jeanna Balda, with the assistance of her friend Nettie Fields. It is now led by Rachel Romina, who has been its musical director since 2014. Prior to being its director, Romina was its piano accompanist six years prior and has experience in assisting choirs and soloists in the bay area. She is also the music director and worship leader at Christ Fellowship Church in Hollister. Oriana’s piano accompanist for the Christmas concerts is Masae Araki, who Romina says the chorale is “blessed to have.” “She is a stunning soloist, as well as sensitive and musical accompanist,” Romina says of Araki.
The 38-member choir has been preparing for its 2017 Christmas concerts for the past three months. The concerts will feature a wide array of genres and musical styles, including two Latin motets from the 1500s, the African-American spiritual “Go, Tell It On the Mountain,” a doo-wop arrangement of “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” and various carols. Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” will also be sung with Oriana alumni singers. Along with the adult choir, the eighteen member Oriana Youth Chorus will also be performing in the Christmas concerts. The youth chorus, ages seven to seventeen, will perform three pieces in the first
By JENNY ARBIZU half of the concert. “The rehearsals have been very productive and a lot of fun,” Romina says. “I love working with this group of singers. They are extremely dedicated, focused and full of energy. They are like family.” Concerts schedule: Dec. 10 at Christ Fellowship Church, 2066 San Benito Street at 3pm; Dec. 12 at Mission San Juan Bautista, 406 Second St, San Juan Bautista, at 7:30pm; and Dec. 15 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church, 1200 Fairview Road at 7:30pm. Tickets are available at Postal Graphics; $15 in advance, $20 at door, $10 for students. For more information, visit orianachorale.org.

San Martin market boasts broad wine selection By BEV STENEHJEM
L
ocals know that the one of the very best places to purchase wine is at Rocca’s Market in San Martin. Family owned since 1927, the market is now in the hands of Tom and Dan Rocca, the founders’ grandchildren. While Tom takes care of the produce department, Dan specializes in its wine selection. “About 30 years ago, before I knew anything about wine, we had a wine salesman come in and tell me our wine selection was terrible,” explains Dan. “So he took me to Napa for a crash-course in wine-tasting. While there I discovered that I actually had a very good nose and palate for wine.” Now, with a selection of over 500 different wines, Rocca’s was
voted “Best Wine Selection” in a recent Reader’s Choice contest. Prices range for as little as $2.99 a bottle to an Opus Cabernet with a price tag of $249. With some imports, the great majority of wines are domestic. And many of the wines are best-sellers, straight from our local wineries, which is a great way to pick up several of your favorite bottles all in one convenient location. Just about every winery from Morgan Hill to Hollister has one or more of their wines for sale. Look for Rocca’s Red, a California table wine, made in partnership with Guglielmo Winery and a great value at $6.99. “It’s a good, everyday wine—great with pizza, pasta or burgers,” says Dan.

he holiday season is here, which means it’s time to decide who’s been naughty or nice. You’ll be surprised to find countless unique and one-of-a-kind gifts available like, Rosy Ring Candles, gourmet chocolates, doTERRA essential oils, Brighton brand accessories, 100 percent handmade beeswax candles and lotions, cupcake

human connection. I’m a helper and I always have been and to be able to help people either get into their first home or buy up or buy down to retire—whatever their life is throwing them. It just thrills me to be part of it and see them through it.
What was your most difficult transaction? A mobile home. It was mobile home in a co-op park and maneuvering all of the different avenues as far as the park approval made it really challenging.
How should a homeowner looking to sell during the holidays proceed?

How did you begin your real estate career? It’s actually kind of funny—I was working at a local bank and my significant other said “have you ever thought about going into real estate?” I responded, “Not really, but I have always wanted to work for myself.” He told me, “As well as you connect with people, I think it would be a great thing to do. It
would give you more time, more flexibility, more income.” And I thought, you know I’ll look into it. I started taking the courses online, I took the state exam-passed it on the first go and and catapulted myself into it and haven’t looked back.
What’s the best part of this business? The connections that I get to make with people, I live for

They really need to narrow down what their motivation is as far as why they want to do it. Go through an interview process to find the best agent that is going to meet their needs. The holidays are usually a hectic time for everybody and they need somebody who is up to the challenge. As far as the holiday goes, it’s a time to declutter. If you’re going to put your house on the market, it’s a good time to start donating things you don’t need anymore. If I had a seller come to me and say we really want to do this— this is what I would tell them. Any holiday decorations should be minimal—as crisp and clean as possible.
