Elf Jr' s joyful song Theater company inspires students in Hollister BY JENNY ARBIZU PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT ELIASON
T
he thought of Christmas elves can create mixed feelings among family members. Children love them; parents cringe at them. Though elves have taken over several homes in Hollister this December, a new kind of elf is visiting town. But families can rest assured: This elf won’t be popping up on your shelf. And he’s sure to put smiles on the faces of parents and children alike. Presented by Inspire Performing Arts Academy, “Elf Jr. the Musical” opens on Friday, Dec.15 at the San Benito High School Auditorium. The three-show performance is directed by academy owner, Sally Hail, choreographed by Maddi Alipaz, vocal-directed by Rachel Clayson and produced by Tristan Clayson. ➝ 6 DECEMBER 15, 2017

‘The love of theater these students and families bring to the production is the cornerstone of Sally’s vision’
Those familiar with the movie Elf will find joy in its musical version. The tale stars William “Buddy” Hobbs, a young orphan who is transported to the North Pole after crawling into Santa Claus’ toy bag. Found by Santa and his elves, he is raised as an elf. But years later, Buddy (played by J. Jesus Jaramillo) finds out he’s human and becomes curious about where he comes from. With permission from Santa (played by Cole Barker), Buddy embarks on a journey to New York City to find his birth father, Walter, and to discover his true identity. The musical follows Buddy through his adventures of being part of the human world and his determination to win over his birth family. All the while, Buddy helps New York City remember the true meaning of Christmas. Tristan Clayson described Buddy the Elf as “so jubilant that even his elf coworkers are sick of how happy he is.” This may explain how Jaramillo was cast as the lead character. Jaramillo’s audition for Buddy the Elf was a “ray of sunshine entering the room,” said Hail.

According to Clayson, the musical has all the fixings for an annual holiday tradition. “For those who want to be there this first year and adopt this play into their holiday plans, or for anyone who wants to spend a fun night out for the holidays—this story is perfect,” he said. The desire to have this show continue in the future made the production difficult, Clayson added, but it was a feat the production team was willing to endure. “The love of theater these students and families bring to the production is the cornerstone of Sally’s vision,” he said. “The exuberance they display will be the delight of every audience member during the show.” Inspire Performing Arts presents ‘Elf Jr. the Musical’ Friday, Dec. 15 at 7pm and Saturday, Dec. 16 at 2pm and 7pm at San Benito High School Auditorium,1220 Monterey St. Tickets are available at ipaacademy.com or at Inspire Performing Arts Academy. “When we saw J. Jesus smile, he was an obvious choice for the lead,” she said. The entire cast, to be exact, is sure to be a hit with audiences. Ranging in age from child to adult, cast members are showcased in such numbers as “Happy All the Time” (where elves sing and smile all day long, but Buddy is even more of an excess of cheerfulness). Jaramillo’s depiction of Buddy the Elf will shine for audiences as well during “SparkleJollyTwinkleJingley.” Producer Tristan Clayson is excited for the audience to finally experience the fun the cast has had. “Walter’s initial reaction to finding out about Buddy is sure to be a favorite moment for the audience,” Clayson said. “It’s one which consistently brings many laughs from the cast members observing during rehearsal.” As for Hail, she hopes this musical will become a holiday fixture in Hollister. Much as those elves show up in homes once a year, she plans to revisit this show on a yearly basis. “We want families to plan their

H
ell for Sure Pass. Gorge of Despair. Lake Lola Montez. Wonderful place names are scattered across Sierra Nevada maps colorfully depicting the difficulty of passage or honoring everything from the Devil to wayward Gold Rush dance hall girls. When a friend sent me a list of possible day trip destinations near Yosemite Valley, the Devil’s Dance Floor caught my eye. For two reasons. First of all, what a terrific name! Who wouldn’t want to visit a place where the Devil throws a party? Secondly,
I was surprised that I had never heard of a place near Yosemite Valley with such an intriguing name. The pull was irresistible. Among several ways to get to the Devil’s Dance Floor, the short and easy route won out. From the beginning of Tioga Road at Crane Flat, we drove 3-1/2 miles to the Old Big Oak Flat Road, the road to that leads to Tamarack Campground. The gate was closed for the season, so what would have been a three-mile drive to the campground in summer, instead added three miles to our walk. But what great walking!
There was nothing but solitude and silence along the paved road that descended gently through an open forest of grand ponderosa and sugar pines. From the campground, we turned into the forest and held a steady cross country course due south. Like giant stairs, a succession of round hillocks lifted us higher, each step with more bare granite and fewer trees. Glaciers have sculpted most of the world’s mountain ranges, but immense stretches of glacially polished granite are a signature characteristic of the Sierra. As we rose to the top of the last and highest hill, we laid eyes on a perfect example. The Devil's dances must be wild events because his dance floor is huge. We crossed acres of bare granite dotted sparsely with contorted pines squeezing a living out of narrow cracks in the rock. At the far edge of the dance floor, the granite dome tumbled toward distant horizons. Immediately below us, a forest of black tree snags, remnants of the 2009 Big Meadow Fire, stretched across Big Oak Flat Road toward the community of Foresta. Valley falls and landmarks were round the bend and out of sight, but beyond and above the valley's southern rim, we recognized key peaks in the Yosemite backcountry. The visibility was so clear that we could see Pacheco Peak in the Coast Range, a three hour drive away. Devil’s Dance Floor offers a taste of the alpine high country at a modest elevation (6,836 feet). In winter, Tioga Road is closed at Crane Flat making it a long cross country adventure to the dance floor, but come summertime when the road to Tamarack Campground is open, it is an easy one-mile ramble away. Visiting a special place in Yosemite usually means you will have plenty of company. Devil’s Dance Floor hits a rare sweet spot: beautiful place, great views, easy to reach, and lightly visited.

The bitter root
of chicory. Lettuce and dandelions are close cousins, while chicory's distant cousins include sunflowers, artichokes, and yarrow. Also known as cornflower, bachelor’s buttons, coffeeweed, blue daisy, and wild endive, chicory’s flowers are composite, and leaves are normally toothed or lobed. Plants grow 10 to 40 inches tall. Flowers appear July through October.
How to grow chicory In our planting zone (9b), chicory is a cool season crop that can be started in January and February, for an early summer crop, and again in July or August, for an early winter crop. This gives the seeds time to get started before the weather turns too hot or too cold. Summer's heat causes chicory to bolt, but a light frost actually adds just a touch of sweetness. Seeds should be planted 1/4 inch deep and thinned to 12 inches apart. Avoid overhead watering, as the leaves are prone to rotting.
Chicory pests and diseases VERSATILE VARIETAL Chicory is a woody perennial weed with a variety of uses at home and in the garden.

Chicory is commonly used as a coffee substitute

C
hicory root coffee may inspire thoughts of pastry and jazz, but this rugged roadside weed has a place in San Benito county gardens and landscapes. Chicory is a woody perennial that comes in many different varieties, depending on the cultivar used: roots (var. sativum) and leaves (var. foliosum) are the most common. Chicory, occurring naturally, can indicate compacted soil. Luckily, its deep taproot help break up that compacted soil, plus it’s drought tolerant!
Chicory as food Chicory is a highly versatile plant. It’s slightly bitter leaves are used in salads, the buds can be blanched, and the
taproots are frequently roasted and ground up as a coffee substitute. You can reduce the bitterness by changing the cooking water 2 or 3 times. Roots are harvested before flowering stems emerge. These roots can be cooked and eaten the same as carrots or parsnips, ground into flour for bread, or used as a coffee substitute. Plus, chicory contains twice as much of the cancer fighting, heart-healthy polyphenols found in spinach!
Chicory description A member of the daisy family (Asteraceae), chicory (Cichorium intybus) is one of those large, gregarious groups that may surprise you. For example, curly endive, Belgian endive, and radicchio are all types
Despite its rugged nature, there are some pests and diseases that can impact chicory. Bacterial soft rot, damping off disease, fusarium wilt, white mold, anthracnose, and downy mildews are all diseases that attack chicory. Aphids, cabbage loopers, beetles, leaf miners, thrips, and slugs and snails may feed on your chicory plants. Chicory grows like a weed. Once established, you can pretty much ignore it until you decide to harvest whatever part you have a hankering for. And, hey, even the flowers are edible!
