motocross enthusiasts over 40 descend upon Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area to play in the dirt.

rom the high perch where the picnic tables sit under shade structures, you can’t see the gray goatees, the bow-legged gaits and the balky knees. In their helmets and goggles and brightly colored body armor—what’s the opposite of camouflage?—the riders could be teenagers, or young men. Certainly the activity—riding off-road motorcycles in circles on dusty, lumpy trails—is associated with people who are young enough to be blissfully ignorant of hip-replacement surgery.

first of which is obvious. It’s a social group of dirt-bike enthusiasts, all of whom are at least 40 or older— in many cases, much older. But it was also about 40 years ago when the evolution of off-road motorcycles took a great leap forward. The bikes left behind, generally anything built in 1974 or earlier, are now considered “vintage.” So, in the case of this bunch, “40-Plus” applies to both bike and rider.

On a recent sunny Sunday afternoon at Hollister Hills’ Grand Prix track, about a dozen riders came together to eat burgers and hot dogs, catch up with old friends and do a whole lot of motorcycle racing. This particular weekend, the group was doing three 45-minute races (Usually, the races are shorter, about 10 to 15 minutes long). As a spectator sport, dirt-bike racing leaves a lot to be desired. But

as a participant, it has to be several kinds of fun. How else can you explain people doing something over and over again for decades? “This is a passion,” said Matt Scott, 60, who lives in Aptos and has been coming to Hollister Hills with the 40-Plus guys for more than 15 years. “I don’t know why I’ve always loved it. But I do. It’s just something that’s in you.” There are three ➝ 6

But these guys are not, by definition or declaration, young men. They are, officially, the 40-Plus Vintage Group, a collection of (mostly) men from all over Northern California who convene once a month at Hollister Hills State Vehicular Recreation Area to play in the dirt with noisy, potentially dangerous vehicles. The “40-Plus” in the group’s name has a double meaning, the

dimensions to this particular passion. The first is simply the experience of being out on the track, the buzzy whine of the bikes in your ears while you navigate the hills and hairpins. The second is the fellowship of spending an afternoon with others who share the same fever. The third? That’s the part that takes place away from Hollister during the rest of the week, the endless rebuilding, repairing and re-engineering that happens in garages and workshops all over the Bay Area, all to keep this vintage bikes in working condition. “For me, the really big draw is the mechanical aspect of it,” said Pat Brown, 62, a cornerstone of the group. “If I’m at home and not in the house, then I’m in the shop. I go straight to the shop and decompress for a couple of hours. The idea that you’re racing a motorcycle that you built is appealing to me. I always say that the competition starts in the garage.” Brown is considered one of the

group’s most consistent riders. But nobody outpaces Frank Vest in competitive fire. “I like to get around the track pretty fast,” he said. Vest is the club’s president. His wife and two daughters have, at various times, participated in club races as well. He is 74 years old, which means he’s just a few years shy of the “Double-40 Vintage Club.” Vest has been riding dirt bikes since he was 12. “I put a lawnmower engine on a bicycle and pull-started it, and away we went.” That was back in the mid 1950s. Soon after, he bought a Whizzer, an engine sold in kits to assemble to bicycles. Other than a brief period when he served in the military, dirt bikes have been a constant in his life ever since. He does not, however, ride street motorcycles. “It’s so boring,” he said. “You just point it down the street and go straight. Who wants to do that?” An ambulance sits in the middle of the track as the racers run the circuit, as required by any group that uses the GP track at Hollister ➝ 15

SVCT’s formula for fun: ‘Guys and Dolls’

JUNE 29, 2018

O

ne of the classics of the Broadway stage, Guys and Dolls, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, is a can’t-lose gamble for theater producers and audiences alike. South Valley Civic Theatre’s current production, which marks the end of the community theater’s 49th season, brings together a number of seasoned area actors for three hours of rollicking energy and touching emotional moments in the story of 1940s New York City gamblers and their “dolls.” Typical musical theater character lists have four romantic leads: the “serious” pair and the comedic pair. Guys and Dolls plays a bit with this formula with lead gambler Nathan Detroit and his fiancee of

14 years, Miss Adelaide, providing plenty of comedy but also some true emotions, and the more serious pair, high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson and missionary Sarah Brown, who follow the more traditional path of a mismatched pair who fall in love against their better judgment. The plot, based on Damon Runyon’s grittier stories of New York’s criminal underground, revolves around Detroit’s search for a copsfree site for his floating craps game. In order to cough up the $1,000 he needs to front the space, he bets Masterson that Masterson won’t be able to convince the prim and proper Sarah to accompany him on a date to Havana. But when Masterson promises Sarah he can deliver 10 sinners to her

Save-A-Soul Mission in Times Square, how can she resist? In the meantime, Detroit is avoiding matrimony with the same zeal he evades the cops, much to the chagrin of his long-suffering girlfriend, a hot-box dancer. In the hands of director Myra Kaelin, the SVCT cast brings a ton of enthusiasm to the show, with Michael Kaelin an earnest-yet-rowdy Nathan Detroit, Joe Hartwell a convincing Sky Masterson, Megan Griffin a convincingly prudish missionary Sarah Brown, and Hilary Little as cute as a button as Miss Adelaide. Little has the most significant musical theater background of the four, with time spent in the cast of Beach Blanket Babylon, and it shows in her vocal style, with an endearing squeak at the front end of phrases in such songs as “Bushel and a Peck” and the sexy “Take Back Your Mink.” Michael Kaelin’s Nathan Detroit is all physical energy and over-thetop emoting, and he rocks the crazy window-pane check suits from costume designer Michelle Griffin. Joe Hartwell hides his Tennessee accent well in his delivery as Sky Masterson, and he also gets the lion’s share of the male-based songs, including the iconic “Luck Be a Lady.” His voice meshes nicely with Griffin’s in duets “I’ll Know” and “I’ve Never Been in Love Before.” Griffin’s somewhat nasal soprano tends to veer a bit closer to the comedic than the romantic, but she shares good chemistry both with Hartwell and with Little on “Marry the Man Today.” Music director Carol Harris leads a brass-heavy 12-piece live orchestra, always a nice addition to a musical theater production. Choreographers Jyovonne Montosa and Nicole Tung keep a large cast moving in inventive ways. South Valley Civic Theatre presents ‘Guys and Dolls’ through July 7 at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, 17090 Monterey Road, Morgan Hill. Visit, svct.org.

Health. Compassion. Innovation

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone at Hazel Hawkins’ ER Department for their kindness and concern for me while I was there having a heart attack on May 19th. From the time I check in (at 1:55pm) until I left in the Ambulance transferring to Santa Clara Kaiser, every single person I came in contact with was polite, cheerful, caring and kind. We could only remember my main nurse Jeremiah and doctor’s names Doctor Bogey. Unfortunately we could not get the many others that where assisting that day.

I believe that their quick actions to address my symptoms helped save my life. After they have completed my cardiac catheterization and stenting at Kaiser, they confirmed a 99% blockage of my LAD artery and I survived a “widow maker heart attack”. I am on the road to recovery now verse my family planning for funeral in no small part thanks to the team at Hazel Hawkins that day. I know that normally businesses get mostly comments on bad service. That is why I wanted to convey my sincere thanks to everyone who was affiliated with my care working in the ER that day. I hope my thanks will be passed along to the crew because we just don’t hear THANK YOU enough.

WHIZZER Some 40-Plus riders are so fanatical, many own more than a handful of dirt bikes—try more than two handfuls. models are no longer manufactured and often replacement parts have to be fabricated, but old dirt bikes, say many of the riders, are adaptable enough that they can function indefinitely. If only the human bodies riding the bikes were so adaptable. “It’s kinda like being a lifelong long-distance runner,” said Frank Vest of his lifelong love for dirt-biking. “If you do it all the time, you can keep doing it, if you’re careful. It’s really good at getting your cardio going, even in the shop with all the changing tires and lifting out engines. It’s quite physical.” The second half of the 20th century was a golden era for the off-road motorcycle, and countless boys embraced the dirt bike as a rite of passage. Many continued to ride into adulthood. But to a few, the ride never ended. “I don’t bowl,” said Pat Brown. “I don’t play cards. I don’t drink or gamble. I don’t do anything but this. I just do dirt bikes. This is my thing. And I feel sorry for people who go through life without having a thing.”

Hills. Injuries are rare, said Vest, and don’t much go beyond the occasional sprained ankle. “We’ll just dust them off, put them in their truck and send them home,” he said. Racers who are approached (or what have long passed) Social Security age don’t generally take the kinds of risks that result in serious injury. The group discourages the kind of machismo and adrenaline-junkie behavior that younger riders might engage in. “If someone comes in with that kind of attitude,” said Scott, “we squash it real quick. That’s really not acceptable, because it’s dangerous. That means you’re probably riding above your head or you think you have something to prove. We’re very much aware of our limitations. We know our bikes, and it’s all pretty safe.” Scott owns 14 bikes, all of which are in running condition. Frank Vest owns 12. Some members of the group own many more than that. Races are set up such that the older bikes with smaller engines compete with each other. The older

GETTING OUT

Rancho San Vicente

Ron Erskine

SKY HIGH New hiking trails beckon hikers to Calero hillside.

Calero County Park’s New Entrance JUNE 29, 2018

By RON ERSKINE

16

A

t the bottom of the Almaden Valley, the hiking trails of Calero County Park crisscross the slopes above the park's namesake reservoir. If you have recently traveled McKean Road, you may have noticed some construction hubbub a half mile below the reservoir dam. Work at the new Rancho San Vicente entrance, which adds new hiking trails over new terrain, is done and the entrance is open... sort of. I say "sort of " because on my early April visit, it was clear that

there is still work to do: porta-potties stand in for unfinished toilets, no trail maps are available at the trailhead, some 4-by-4 trail posts have no signs attached, and the trail map I downloaded from the web didn't include trails I encountered on my hike. But I am glad to overlook undone punch list items by an agency that makes such lovely open space available for us to roam. As you lace up your boots in the Rancho San Vicente parking lot, look up at the broad tower-topped hill on your left. The newly opened trails cut a number of routes up, over, and around this hill, revealing

fresh views and delivering a lovely day out. On an earlier swing-in visit to the parking area, I noticed that there were no trail maps, so I looked online and was surprised to see one there. With that in hand, I crossed two cattle gates and set out on the Lisa Killough Trail that leads over a shoulder to the back side of the hill. About a mile along the way, the trail split; one fork was a continuation of the Lisa Killough Trail, the other was a named trail not on my map. I was more interested in going up the hill rather than maintaining a low course around it, so I turned left and largely ignored my map for the next two miles. I knew that if I continued a counter clockwise course around the hill, I would eventually drop down to the Cottle Trail by the reservoir. As I climbed across the backside of the hill, I enjoyed special views over New Almaden toward Loma Prieta and Mount Umunhum. At the top, I looked back toward home. Calero Reservoir, the Almaden Valley, and the Diablo Range spread out beneath me. Terrific. While there we no stunning wildflower displays, I saw an amazing variety: poppies, cream cups, checkerbloom, bird's-eye gilia, California gilia, Johnny-jump ups, woodland star, lupine, and mule's ears to name but a few. My course around the mountain finally dropped me down to Cottle Trail and the edge of Calero Reservoir. From there, it was a lovely, mostly shaded three-mile traverse back to the parking lot. If you don't have the "sense of direction" chip, take note. Download a map and stick to the Lisa Killough/Cottle Trail route, an eightmile loop that circles the entire newly opened property. Short of that, venture a mile or two to the back of the hill for great views and a real sense of solitude.

Creating Relationships for Life I have been working since I was 9 years old in the Philippines, helping my mom and grandma in their store. I have always enjoyed working with people and helping them. I moved to the states to be with family and continue my college experience, and loved the states so much that I stayed and made my life for myself. Met my wonderful husband and started our family over 30 years ago. I have had my real estate license since 1996, and what better way to help people than with their real estate needs and making their home buying or selling dreams come true. Whether I am working with sellers or buyers, my goal is to make their real estate transaction as smooth as possible. I listen to my client’s expectations and do my best to exceed their needs.
