RACING EVENT All it took was one race to raise funds for Special Olympics and Hollister’s Sgt. Roy Iler was hooked and ready to start a team of his own.

E
very year for the past nine years, refurbished police vehicles line the quarter-mile racetrack at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville. Each car is race ready and decked out in paint schemes and decals representing law enforcement agencies from Monterey, Santa Cruz, San Jose, Santa Clara and San Benito counties.

The annual six-series racing event, Police in Pursuit, is a law enforcement fundraiser that benefits Special Olympics, a nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities through the joy of sport. Each participant—a sworn, reserve or retired police officer—must pay a $750 entry fee, which goes directly to Special Olympics. In addition to the entry fee, each racing team collects community donations, with the coveted pole position going to the racer amassing the most donations.Sgt. Roy Iler, longtime Hollister resident, father of two and a member of the San Benito County Sheriff ’s Office since 1992, attended his first Police in Pursuit last year. By the end of the race, Iler was ready to organize his own team, but first he had to present the idea to San Benito County Sheriff Darren Thompson. “I loved the idea,” Thompson said. “I love that our industry will step up and donate our own time and our own resources for such a worthy cause. So, I was immediately supportive of Sgt. Iler’s efforts. Law enforcement has a long-standing relationship with Special Olympics. So, we’ve participated in a lot of levels for years.” ➝6

That special connection began over three decades ago, with the first Law Enforcement Torch Run created by a Wichita, Kansas police chief in 1981. The event has been the largest grassroots fundraiser for all Special Olympics, and the only nonprofit endorsed by the California Chiefs of Police. “Now fast forward to today, the Law Enforcement Torch Run is in every state in the United States and is in more than 177 countries,” John Hohmann, retired Scotts Valley Police lieutenant and organizer of the Police in Pursuit event, said. Hohmann first proposed the idea of the six-series race to Ocean Speedway officials in 2010, and they were all in. “After the first race, officers pay $40 to race the additional five races,” Hohmann said. “Each officer is more than willing to pay the $40 pit fee to continue racing throughout the year. It’s our way of giving thanks back to the speedway for allowing us to do what we do out there.” This is Iler’s and his teammates Tony Weir and Frank Vierra’s first full season to compete in the race, and to collect donations for Special Olympics. “This race season I raised
$2,500 myself to donate,” Iler said, adding that a lot of people throughout the community helped out. “San Benito Tire Pros is one of my biggest sponsors. Emergency Vehicle Specialists, they donated stuff to help us. Barragan Insurance Marketing helped us out, gave us some money, and Pinnacle West Exterminators.” Halfway through the season, Iler is quite pleased with the team’s standings. “Currently right now we’re sitting in fourth place in points overall, which is pretty good; we’re doing really well,” Iler said, adding that July 27 is the next scheduled race. “It’s for a good cause and we get to have fun, and we get to help raise money for the special athletes,” Iler said, adding that the community is great about supporting the racers and the event. Sheriff Thompson believes the event also affords the community an opportunity to view local law enforcement officers in a new light. “It’s also valuable for people to see their law enforcement officials in their civilian roles, just being part of the society and part of the community,” Thompson said. “We’re the same as the civilians. We have lives, we have interests, ➝ 15

he costumes alone are a challenge—think of all those Edwardian hats for the Ascot horse race, and evening gowns for Eliza Doolittle’s debut—and then there are the voices required to effectively sing the show, from Henry Higgins’s “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face” to Eliza’s “I Could Have Danced All Night” and her father’s “Get Me to the Church on Time” to Freddy’s “On the Street Where You Live.” “It’s a beast of a show,” acknowledges Derek Barnes, director of San Benito Stage Company’s summer musical at the Granada Theatre in Hollister. “The scope of it,
the magnitude, for some community theaters, is probably challenging.” The 1956 Tony Award-winning musical, with book and lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner and music by Frederick Loewe, tells the story of a phonetics professor who takes on the project of passing off a Cockney flower girl as a lady. The show opens July 13 and stars Robert Christopher as Henry Higgins, Isabelle Menez as Eliza, Johnny Moreno as Freddy and Ron Firstbrook as Alfred P. Doolittle. Christopher has extensive community theater experience in the South County, including George Banks in “Mary Poppins” a couple of years ago. “This was one of his bucket list
roles,” said Barnes. “He’s really kind of immersed himself into the character, trying to portray him as accurately as possible.” Menez, a Monte Vista Christian School graduate with musical and voice training, “sounds wonderful in all of the songs,” said Barnes. “She’s really taken on that role with great ease. She can switch from the Cockney to the very prim and proper Eliza very quickly. Her singing voice is just what we needed for that role.” Barnes recently saw an exhibit of the Ascot costumes on display at the Warner Bros. studio. “I was just marveling at how impressive they looked,” he said. He’s counting on costume designers Lois Kincaid and Toni Smith to tap into the theater company’s extensive collection of costumes to fill the stage appropriately, not to mention building some show-stopping millinery. Kayla Murphy is vocal director and Stephanie Hicks is choreographer for the show. “We wanted to figure out a way to hook the audience into a storyline that has a variety of different story arcs” and emotions, said Barnes, from “happiness to sadness to anger.” He recognizes the show has “some chauvinistic tones to it; a 1913 play about an egotistical male who thinks he can turn a woman into a proper lady.” The show will San Benito’s last major production at the Granada Theatre, where its long-term lease is up as the owner takes on some remodeling. “We’re in a decent situation here,” Barnes said. “We’ve been very comfortable at the Granada. Now we’re going to be out of our comfort zone.” Next year’s productions will be at several community sites. “We’re going to be a mobile theater,” said Barnes. “That’s how San Benito Stage Co. originally operated.” San Benito Stage Company presents ‘My Fair Lady,’ July 13-28 at the Granada Theatre, 336 Fifth St, Hollister. Sarah’s Vineyard celebrates 40 years By LAURA NESS
T
im Slater has been making wine at Sarah’s Vineyard for long enough now, he feels he’s figured it out. An engineer by trade and an artist at heart, he’s a rocket-science level brain, with the capacity to simultaneously carry on multiple conversations on various topics, which serves him well at harvest time. When Slater bought the place on Hecker Pass in 2001, there were seven acres of chardonnay, made in an elegant, rich style. Ronald Reagan liked it enough to serve at a White House dinner in 1982. Slater, though, had a thing for pinot noir, sourcing it from some great vineyards while his estate vineyard came online. Then, in 2004, he heeded the call of the Rhone, planting counoise,
grenache, mourvèdre, viognier, roussanne, grenache blanc and picpoul blanc, which he says totally takes over his white blend, Jours de Joie. “A little goes a very long way!” Recently, he planted some charbono. He jokes he’d like to make fun new wines under an entirely different label. “I’m tired of people asking me, ‘Who is Sarah?!’” That, actually, would be Marilyn “Sarah” Otterman, who found the brand 40 years ago now. She’d be amazed to see Slater’s plans for his new tasting room, a modified Norman castle. It was packed,” Doug said, adding, “We were in the pit along with all the other race cars and the Police in Pursuit.” “We actually drove mom’s car on the track,” Trevor added. Also at the inaugural race, a Special Olympics representative was presented a check for $34,600. Hohmann’s goal for next year is $40,000. “All the money raised by the event goes toward year-round training, equipment, travel expenses and participation in the summer games, which are free to the athletes and their families,” Hohmann said. That special athlete is Trevor Lucken, 33, who started competing in the games at age 3 and has accrued more than 75 medals. For more than 15 years, Lucken has been a Special Olympics global messenger. “I would go to the community talking about Special Olympics and what it means to me,” Lucken said, adding that one of his favorite things about the Olympics is reciting the oath: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” His father, Doug Lucken,

ver since last fall's devastating wildfires in the wine country and beyond, the region’s tourism professionals have been reminding us why we love the area and enticing us to return. This past spring, I attended the Outdoor Writers Association of California's conference in Santa Rosa hosted by Sonoma County Tourism. Choosing from the array of activities offered to us was a frustrating proposition. How do you select two from a list that includes balloon rides, deep sea fishing, kayaking the Russian River, a winery
tour, a visit to Safari West, golf, and on and on? I finally decided to put my day in the hands of a guide from Getaway Adventures, a company that can customize a tour by mixing and matching several modes of travel to a variety of destinations. Take a hike; visit wineries or breweries on a regular bike or an electric bike; kayak the Russian River or paddle among the harbor seals on the ocean near Jenner. While they will configure a day of adventures to meet your preference, our schedule was set: a morning hike at Armstrong Woods State Park and an
afternoon kayak cruise down the Russian River. The valley cut by Fife Creek and its tributaries in Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Preserve outside Guerneville is one of the few creases in northern California’s coast range where old growth redwoods continue to thrive. As you walk among these ancient giants, the soft duff underfoot and the dense forest canopy absorb every sound leaving only utter silence. This peaceful setting among immense trees melts cares away and dissolves any illusions of self-importance. Our guide led us out of the valley and up the East Ridge Trail to a drier and brighter forest of madrone and tanoaks, many of which had succumbed to sudden oak death. Star lilies, Douglas irises, and redwood sorrel persisted into late spring to brighten our way. The trail rolled along the ridgetop before we returned to Fife Creek curling through those ancient redwoods, a great 3-mile loop. River trips often bring to mind roiling water igniting passengers’ high-pitched squeals. Not on the Russian River in spring. No rapids, just the occasional riffle. Hunting osprey and wary great blue herons showed the way as we slid slowly toward Jenner and the Pacific Ocean. Piloting the kayak required only the lightest attention, an oar stroke now and then to stay on course. Pure peace. That evening, as the low evening light warmed the vineyards at Jack London State Park, I sat with other conference attendees under a sprawling valley oak while the folks from Stellar Catering brought us local wines and an amazing meal. Everyone I spoke to buzzed at the recounting of their day. Whether deep sea fishing, a hot air balloon ride, visiting Safari West or just drifting down the Russian River, everyone had a great time. The folks in Sonoma County are great hosts, and they are waiting to show you a good time.
