All roads lead to Crēdo Ramona Hill’s ambitious plan to enliven San Juan Bautista’s arts scene BY WALLACE BAINE PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT ELIASON

I

n the beginning, all she wanted was to start a small dance studio, to lead a weekly belly dancing class for her friends and neighbors in San Juan Bautista. But the space that Ramona Hill found for her studio inflamed her ambitions. It demanded she dream bigger.

building which dates back almost to the Civil War. “When I first walked into here, it was perfect for a dance studio,” she said. “But then the other room, and the garden, and the office. No, it was telling me. You’re going to do something bigger.” Credo represents a big turn in Hill’s life. Thanks to an inheritance from her late mother, she was able to start business after 30 years catering to her family, which includes her husband, San Juan machinist Raymond Hill, and her four children. “This is already a multi-generational place,” she said. “My mother’s money went into it and my daughters are now teaching here.” The studio’s name, Credo to mean a “set of beliefs,” harkens back to Hill’s love of Latin which she studied in high school. “We are a non-political, non-religious organization,” she said. “Our credo is in self-expression.” ➝ 6

BELIEFS Dancer and teacher Ramona Hill says the the credo at Crēdo Studio is self expression.

OCTOBER 26, 2018

That space is part of the imposing old IOOF Odd Fellows building at Polk and Third streets in San Juan and is now the home of Hill’s Credo Studio. Sure, she has her dance studio where she offers belly dancing and yoga classes, but Credo has the potential for so much more. Hill’s vision is to turn Credo into nothing less than a cultural arts center for San Juan and San

Benito County residents with classes, workshops, concerts, literary events, after-school art programs and more. “I would like to see pretty much daily activities here,” she said at her studio, “maybe Sundays off.” The idea is to serve up something that will appeal to everyone in the family: after-school painting and drawing for kids, volunteer programs that function as community service for teens, maybe a vigorous dance class for Mom, and a guitar concert for Dad. Hill moved into the space two years ago and officially opened in January 2017. The studio has its small dance space, which doubles as a concert venue. Adjacent to that is a room that can function as the arts studio with tables and art supplies and behind it all is a sumptuous garden space with an office that she can make available for private functions such as birthday parties. All of it in a charmingly antique

Art by Sonia Orban-Price

Originally from Southern California, Hill lived in Santa Cruz before moving with her family 20 years ago to San Juan. She had only visited the mission town once before moving there, on a date at Daisy’s Saloon. “It was only for a couple of hours and it was at night,” she said. “But I was entranced even then.” As a performing artist, she was first captured by modern dance, but discovered the cabaret style of bellydance in her mid 20s, while living in Santa Cruz. It gave her a sense of free self-expression that she was used to in modern dance. Now she calls belly dancing her “dance home.” She wants to spark the beginnings of the kind of bellydance culture that thrives in Santa Cruz. Credo now offers weekly classes in belly dancing,

as well as twice-weekly classes in yoga. Still, she said, belly dancing is an almost incidental part of her mission at Credo. “It’s just something I do for myself.” The master plan ranges much farther afield. She is, in fact, in the process of establishing her after-school program in which she hopes to work with families from nearby San Juan School, Watsonville’s Monte Vista Christian School (which has a few local families) and area home-schoolers looking for some cultural enrichment programs for their kids. With volunteer help from local high-schoolers, kids in the program will have snack time, homework, then lots of creative work in art, music and dance. New organic food store is shoppers’ dream

8

By MARY BARTHOLOMEW

S

outh Valley’s latest gem is South Bay Natural Foods, located at 8120 Westwood Drive in Gilroy. Offering savvy shoppers a rotating selection of premium natural and organic foods at low prices, South Bay Natural Foods is a cherry pickers' dream come true to shop and compare prices for the best deals. Buying organic can be expensive and cost prohibitive, especially in the Bay Area. The small store, opened just four months ago, promises deep savings of 50 percent or more on many recognizable organic brand names. Father and son owners John and Anthony Anagnostakis bring 32

years of grocery and produce wholesale distribution experience. “We got into organics because it’s an emerging market in the South Valley and there is a lot of competition with conventional food markets,” Anthony explains. “Our goal is to make organics accessible for people who otherwise would not be able to afford them.” Based on customer feedback, the Anagnostakis source inventory from multiple distributors to get the best product at the lowest price so that savings are passed on to their customer. Always greeting customers with a warm smile and speaking several languages, it’s easy for John

Anagnostakis to help his clients feel at home. As charming as its owners, the 2,500-square-foot retail space brings a smile because it is reminiscent of an old-fashioned mercantile store packed with a wide range of organic products, restaurant (industrial) size canned goods, homestead supplies and the odd essential. John explains he “enjoyed owning a small homestead, harvesting backyard produce and having animals.” It’s a one-stop shop for small homesteaders including such supplies as poultry feeders, natural feed, rabbit hutches, dog crates and kennels. Their human counterparts won’t be disappointed either with a wide selection of top organic and natural products including milks alternatives, organic baby foods, artisanal flours, an assortment of gluten-free products as well as non-GMO organics, a large selection of nutritious vegan snacks, and free trade coffee. With the addition of hard-tofind imported Italian pastas, grains and sections packed with frozen foods as well as dairy and home cleaning and toiletry products, South Bay Natural Foods is a great first stop on anyone’s shopping list. With three large grocery chain stores located just blocks away on First Street, competition is tough for this father-and-son organics business. However, the draw to South Bay Natural Foods is deep savings on familiar name brands of natural and organic products. As word of mouth travels, John and Anthony hope to expand by offering produce, deli and larger dairy selections. The duo is also looking to collaborate with gluten-free artisanal bakers to feature baked goods. “We are a small family business that provides a great service to the community with a low-cost natural food store,” says Anthony.

TEACHING FAMILY Ramona Hill’s daughter and fellow dancer Ruby Hill is one of the instructors at Crēdo Studio.

She has already hosted concerts from musicians such as singer/ songwriter (and former San Juan Bautista resident) Dayan Kai, percussionist and looper Rick Walker and folk singer Bob Reid, among others. She has also hosted poets such as Chicana writer and performer Gloria L. Velasquez, and writers on book tours. All this daily activity is in service to the community that Ramona Hill knows best, a region that she said includes San Juan Bautista but also nearby towns Aromas and Prunedale. “I’m really working towards a community art and cultural center here,” she said. “I see it as just as important as a library. (San Juan Bautista) is a tourist-oriented community Most merchants here heavily depend on tourism. But this one is for the locals.”

Merlot rules Perfect wines for October

O

ctober is merlot month. Fitting, as much of California’s merlot is harvested from late September to mid-October. Church Creek Cellars in Gilroy has 4 acres of merlot on its 21-acre vineyard. Carl and Diana Barsody bought the place eight years ago, intending to sell fruit. But in 2011, with no buyers in place, they decided to make wine with some home winemaker friends. “It turned out better than we expected!” says Carl. The 2013 is a big, dense style, with some petite sirah. It’s a crowd favorite, although Borsody prefers the brighter, fresher 2014, which has a lively, strawberry-cherry core and enticing peppery edge.

By LAURA NESS

If you like easy and breezy, Fortino’s 2016 merlot is as shiny as a brand-new car, complete with that new car smell. It’s smooth and soft, like cherry cola cotton candy. Heller Estate’s 2014 merlot reveals many layers, with aromas of blackberry, sage, blueberry, leather and pine. With impeccable balance and vibrant acidity, it’s filled with blackberry jam and boysenberry pie. Another standout is Fernwood’s 2013 Mirepoix, 85 percent merlot with 9 percent cab sauv and 6 percent cab franc. Named for the French term for onions, celery and carrots slow-cooked in fat, this sleek, supple wine easily pairs with any cuisine. Winemaker Matt Oettinger calls it his “shotgun” wine.

And I get enjoyment out of seeing dreams come true. I have been working in Real Estate since 2003, making deals throughout California. I like working with sellers because they are moving on to another adventure in their future of home buying – either upgrading or downͲsizing. I like working with buyers because I like to see their reactions to the houses we look at. I also like the fulfillment of making their dream of owning a home come true. The most important thing I do for my clients is making myself available at all times – 7 days a week – morning, afternoon and evening.
