link, and you may miss it. Stop and go inside—and you won’t forget it. Natural Wonders in San Juan Bautista is a hidden treasure of sorts; a deli and health food store rolled into one. Customers who stop by the establishment located at 215 Third Street may feel they’ve entered a home instead of a store.

Open its doors, and find yourself greeted with a large table set with napkins, salt and pepper shakers, and a large coffee urn. Choose to order food and dine, or walk along the treasure trove of walls filled with health-related merchandise. All the while, owner Alma Paulk will help customers or prepare dishes behind her kitchen counter.
The store promotes the practice of healthy living, serving fresh, organic and vegetarian/vegan food at its deli. It’s a lifestyle Paulk has practiced most of her life, but owning a health business or deli was never in her foresight. “I never thought I was going to end up cooking for the public,” says the business owner. accountant with a master’s degree in finance from University of Phoenix in San Jose, Paulk says she was first introduced to healthy eating during elementary school in Mexico City, Mexico. “My friends were vegetarians and used to take me to their homes and introduce me to their meals,” she says. She became a vegetarian herself for more than 20 years ago, but doctors recommended she reintroduce meat back into her diet to increase her amino acids. Later she took classes at culinary schools such as International Cooking in San Jose, California, and further learned about preparing exotic foods. “But I never really practiced it,” she continues. She has now cooked five days a week for the eight-year-old deli. The food is “very healthy Mexican-style,” says Paulk, who combines recipes with other South American foods. Quinoa is a staple in many dishes, and everything served is organic and vegetarian or vegan—with the exception of the turkey sandwich. The deli’s “little, mini Whole Foods” portion of the store sells toothpastes, soaps, body lotions, shampoos, conditioners, flower-based and mineral-based make-up, multivitamins, body-building products and much more.
“It’s a specialty kind of place,” Paulk says. “A lot of people don’t know I’m here.” But they should. Paulk says many locals drive to larger cities to find products she already has on her shelves. “There are alot of people who will go from Hollister all the way to Gilroy to buy their vitamins; I carry the best stuff, the stuff that really gives results,” she says. Paulk opened the store soon after her husband, Ronald Paulk, opened his store Mission Clocks & Watches, next door at 217 Third Street, 14 years ago. Soon after, they moved from their residence in Santa Cruz to Hollister, and Paulk then realized she needed to do her own organic cooking, and even open her own business. “There were no places [in San Juan Bautista] that offered organic alternatives,” she says. Natural Wonders serves and sells only organic and sustainable products—everything from snacks to the store merchandise fall under those standards. And though it’s technically a deli, Paulk says she conducts her business as a restaurant. “Deli’s usually have stuff prepared and ready to go, but because the town is so small it can’t support the type of business where ➝ 15

SVCT’s presents Broadway hit of biblical proportion By SUSAN L. RIFE
A
teen cast for South Valley Civic Theatre’s production of Stephen Schwartz’s 1971 off-Broadway hit “Godspell” may be the most genius theater decision ever, as their youthful exuberance spills off the stage in brightly colored paisley waves. At the heart of this pop-rock musical are the most feel-good of the parables of Jesus, mostly from the Gospel of Matthew, told by Andy Gonzalez as Jesus. His enthusiastic young followers respond with fun, uptempo songs as they dance through a brightly-colored playground, complete with swings
and slide. Interestingly, many of the songs’ lyrics come from the Episcopal Church hymnal. Gonzalez, who at 19 is at the top of the teen cast’s age range, brings a grounded maturity to the role, and his voice is just to die for. Sporting a creditable Afro, he beams a near-constant benevolent smile as he coaxes his disciples out of their old ways of thinking and into the new teachings he brings, along with new behaviors—primary, of course, being the commandments to love God and your neighbor. In the second act, he grows more frustrated with his followers’ seeming lack of understanding of the point he’s
trying to make, especially as he recognizes his own time running out and the long road ahead for the new Christians. There’s a bit of focus on the events leading up to the crucifixion, but really nothing directly pointing to the Resurrection. Gonzalez is joined by several others in the cast with exceptionally strong voices. Natalie Fitzgibbons knocks it out of the theater on the musical’s best-known number, “Day by Day,” and leads beautiful harmonies on “By My Side” with Kendall Eves and Caroline Drayton. Lucia Kaelin, in a funky fur vest over a wildly printed dress, puts a torch singer’s smokey spin on “Turn Back O’ Man.” Sean O’Connor handles the thankless role of Judas well, singing “We Beseech Thee.” Charlie Grimm, playing John the Baptist, gives a heartfelt rendering to “On the Willows.” Directed by Megan Griffin with vocal direction by Lynette Oliphant, the cast ably handles the tricky Schwartz harmonies, which go far beyond four-part into practically another dimension. Music director Mike Rubino leads a snappy live band of Kirk Berkland, Tony Burmudez, Tom Dossa, Chris Eves, Greg Goebel, Jonathan Heinz and Holly Lasky, and believe me, live music goes a long way in brightening up any stage production. Alicia Corso’s costume designs are both age- and era-appropriate, with bright florals and paisleys, fringed vests and daisy crowns nearly outshining the cast’s beaming smiles. The show was last presented by SVCT in 1998. The current production is part of SVCT’s 50th anniversary season. At Calerrain, they just released their 2017 Santa Lucia Highlands chardonnay, and will be releasing their debut malbec and albariño in March. Aver Family just released their 2017 Benevolent Viognier (90 pts), 2015 Family Album Petite Sirah/ Cabernet Red Blend and their wine club exclusive 2015 Blessing Petite Sirah. They recently featured all their 90+ point wines: 2014 Family Album Mourvèdre (90 points), 2015 Hope Rhône Blend (92 points and Editor's Choice, Wine Enthusiast), 2014 Faith Petite Sirah/Syrah Blend (92 points) and 2014 Heritage Cabernet (91 points), as well as the 90 point viognier. Church Creek Cellars recently
released their 2013 Cab Sauvignon Reserve, which was aged in 100 percent new French oak barrels for about 42 months. A long beauty sleep! Their 2016 tempranillo awaits, too. Lion Ranch will release their 2017 viognier and 2017 marsanne to the public soon: they are wine club only for now. Karen Seeker of Seeker Vineyard reminds us they are closed for the winter, as their parking lot fills with rainwater. Thereafter, they hope to open the first and third Saturday of each month, freeing up other Saturdays for private bookings. T
his month the Gilroy Arts Alliance gathers the community for its fifth annual celebration of the rich contributions African Americans have made to our national and local tapestry. Exhibit curator Louise Shields said the theme of this year’s event focused on the Black Migration and its lasting legacy on arts and culture. “What inspired me is the strength and courage of how thousands of African Americans fled the Deep South—escaping the lynchings, Jim Crow laws, murders, poor living and working conditions for the North, in hopes of a better life for themselves and their families,” Shields says. Through the exhibit Shields and other artists pay tribute to ancestors who paved the way to a better life for generations to come. “The legacy our ancestors left
included music, arts, and literature, which blossomed through creative talents such as Jacob Lawrence, Duke Ellington and poet Zora Neale Hurston,” Shields says. “My great grandmother was also featured in the exhibit. I am told that she migrated from Louisiana with my grandmother.” Opened since Feb. 2, Gilroy Arts Alliance executive director Kevin Heath says the community response has been amazing. “The celebration event drew a full house,” Heath says. “Whether it is through the artists who exhibit with us throughout the year, or the rich cultural events we provide, it is always a pleasure to see the community turn our and support cultural arts.” For more information, visit: gilroycenterforthearts.com or call, 408.842.6999.

Geoff and Sofia Salloum, firsttime visitors of San Juan Bautista, tried the vegan pozole and vegetarian burger. “This is literally the first place we came into,” says Sofia. “I’ve never had a soup like that. It’s really delicious.” And San Juan Bautista resident Robert Eliason loves the lunch menu Natural Wonders offers. “My mom used to go to her place for lunch,” he says. “[Alma] is a great cook.” But perhaps the luckiest customer is her husband, who happily eats there twice a day. “Eating here is the highlight of my day,” he says.
