Letter from the Fair

The Santa Cruz County Fair is a magical thing… in a special place. In the shadow of Silicon Valley, nestled in the agriculturally rich Pajaro Valley, it’s a destination event that perfectly combines farm charm and futuristic excitement!

That’s why we’re especially excited the theme of the 2024 Santa Cruz County Fair is “Pioneer Days to Modern Ways.”

For the first time ever, this year’s Fair features a drone show. Each night of the Fair, “Skye Dreams” will amaze fairgoers with 200 drones dancing in the sky above the fairgrounds. It’s an artistic and high-tech experience!

Even as the Fair embraces modern ways, its agricultural roots are at the heart of the Fair. The Santa Cruz County Fair is known as one of the last old-fashioned community fairs. It attracts some 65,000 people. Fairgoers flock to the sprawling, yet cozy, venue to experience the best of what their friends and neighbors have to offer in dozens of categories. Those categories include agriculture, horticulture, livestock, poultry, home arts, amateur wines, fine arts, LEGOs, poetry, youth displays, handspun/handwoven crafts, quilting, photography, floriculture, collections and more.

Live entertainment this year includes, Antsy McClain, RED - A Taylor Swift Tribute, Escaramuza El Centenario Charra Show with Lola Montes and Los Tiranos Del Norte.

The Fair also hosts a carnival midway, Monster Trucks and Motocross, magic shows, kids’ shows, a horse show, tractor parades and roving entertainment. Plus, all the savory and sweet fair treats you only get once a year… from funnel cakes and cinnamon rolls to fried artichokes and BBQ kabobs.

In 2023, readers of the Santa Cruz Sentinel voted the Fair as the Best Annual Event in Santa Cruz County.

There wouldn’t be a Fair without the fairgrounds. And there wouldn’t be fairgrounds without the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation. The Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization. It was founded in 2002 by a group of Fair supporters who wanted to preserve the fairgrounds and the community-based activities that take place there. Its motto: Funding Our Fairgrounds’ Future.

With the help of the community, the Foundation funds capital improvements to ensure the continued vitality of the Santa Cruz County Fair. The Foundation has invested almost $4 million in the fairgrounds over the last 22 years. In addition to funding maintenance projects for buildings and grounds, the Foundation has created an RV Park, refurbished the Maintenance Building, Crosetti Building and Grandstands, built a new storage area and upgraded the fairgrounds’ water system. Currently, the Foundation is working to add a kitchen and restrooms to Heritage Hall.

“Our Fairgrounds brings us all together,” says Diane Porter Cooley.

Throughout the year, the fairgrounds offer a unique venue for some 350 events held by community groups, businesses, and families. It also serves as an emergency shelter in times of disaster and a campground for travelers. The fairgrounds offer full RV hookups, restrooms and a picnic area.

The fairgrounds also feature a 1/4-mile dirt racetrack facility, the historic Rodgers House and the Agricultural History Project. The Project is a nostalgic collection of equipment, tools, exhibits, tractors and buggies. Kids can drive a tractor and visitors can learn all about farming—both now in the olden days. In December, the fairgrounds’ bright and colorful Holiday Lights display has quickly become a must-see event of the holiday season.

Look closely at the 2024 Fair artwork!

There are so many fun and fantastic details in this year’s poster… based on our theme, “Pioneer Days to Modern Ways!”

Artist Susan McBeth created the time-defying design. It features a covered wagon hovercraft, an astronaut and pioneers with a smartphone and tablet in hand. And don’t miss the drone cleverly hidden in the logo. The artwork is the perfect depiction of Fairs past, present and future.

The timeless tableau is the culmination of many creative minds, both Fair officials and marketing team members, brainstorming the limitless possibilities inspired by “Pioneer Days to Modern Ways.” They handed off their ideas to McBeth who crafted them into the hand drawn, colorful and original artwork.

Fairgrounds Foundation Funding Our Fairgrounds Future

The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds are considered one of the best maintained and beautiful fairgrounds in the State.

How does that happen?

The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation, with the generous help of community members, funds capital improvements to ensure the continued vitality of the Fairgrounds. The Foundation has invested almost $4 million in the buildings and grounds since its inception 22 years ago.

The Foundation is a not-for-profit 501(c) (3) charitable organization founded by a group of Fair supporters that wanted to preserve the fairgrounds and the community-based

activities that take place there. The organization has certainly lived up to its motto: “Funding Our Fairgrounds Future.” It has received four Chamber of Commerce Awards- one for Best Organization and three for Best Event.

Our current project is to add a16’ x 80” addition to Heritage Hall. It will house a kitchen, restrooms and storage area. The building is used extensively for employee training and for small family events such as bridal and baby showers, quinceañeras and weddings.

During disasters, it’s used as an infirmary and Red Cross Station. These activities would be much more efficient with an available restroom and kitchen in the building. Currently guests must walk several hundred feet for a restroom and meals must be prepared off-site.

HOLIDAY LIGHTS and HOLIDAY FAIR RETURN THIS DECEMBER!

Holiday Lights, the magical Christmas Light Show, returns every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Back for its fifth year, Holiday Lights will be bigger and brighter this year. Volunteers have been working since the end of last year’s event to create new lighted characters, trees and all types of fun things to look at as you drive through the three-quarter mile experience.

While this is predominantly a drive-thru experience, we have two special nights when you can walk through and see the lights up close and personal.

The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation and the Agricultural History Project proudly create this event each year.

December 6th and 7th, you can enjoy both the lights and great holiday shopping at the 47th Annual Holiday Craft and Gift Fair, presented by the Fairgrounds Foundation. It’s open from noon to 9pm both days. The Harvest, JJ Crosetti, and Fine Art buildings will be filled with great handmade crafts and gifts. It’s a shopper’s paradise!

On behalf of the 14th District Agricultural Association Board of Directors, staff and volunteers, I’m thrilled to welcome you to the 2024 Santa Cruz County Fair!

We’re celebrating the past, present and future of the Fair with this year’s theme “Pioneer Days to Modern Ways.”

The Fair has something for everyone. Visit Yesterday’s Farm to learn about the Central Coast’s rich agricultural history, watch local

youth compete in horse shows and livestock competitions, take a spin on a Midway ride or stay into the evening to watch our newest addition to the Fair—a nightly drone show!

Of course, the Fair wouldn’t be complete without everyone’s favorite foods and beverages, concerts and shows, department contests and exhibit halls and more.

Keep reading this guide for all the information you need for a great time at the Fair.

I want to thank the Fairgrounds’ staff and volunteers for all the time and effort they

It’s with great enthusiasm that I want to welcome you to the Santa Cruz County Fair in 2024! Join us from September 11th-15th for amazing community exhibits, fabulous food and so many fun rides and attractions!

This year, we are looking ahead to the future but with an eye on the past with our theme: PIONEER DAYS TO MODERN WAYS. Does this mean robots? Yes, it probably does! Does it mean a Drone Light Show every night?? Yes, it DEFINITELY does! Does it mean personal jet packs for everyone? No… no jet packs… sorry about that, but there will certainly be tractor parades, carnival

thrills and giant slides, monster trucks and motocross, Yesterday’s Farm, pig races and camel rides!

Watch for new entertainers (alongside old favorites), great musical performances, educational displays and amazing food choices. Also, our livestock entries, 4-H and daily horse shows, model trains and a thrilling acrobatic circus! Plus, a new “Fairgrounds Pavilion” full of vendors of every stripe, including local makers and artists! And don’t forget about our hardworking volunteers and community members, bringing you exhibits and entries from every possible category. Kids and adults alike are putting

their own spin on our annual theme. As always, I want to thank our tireless team of staff and volunteers who worked hard all year to bring the magic to these fairgrounds. And, I want to thank all of you for coming out to the fairgrounds and being a part of our Fair Family for five days of fun, frivolity, food, and fun. And yes, I said fun twice because I’m very serious about fun!

APPLE PIE COMPETITION

It’s a delicious competition that’s as American as… well, apple pie! The 47th annual Apple Pie Baking Contest takes place at noon on Opening Day of the Fair, at Paddy Smith Park. There are three divisions:

• Youth, 17 and under

• Adult, 18 and over

• Masters, anyone who has previously won 1st or 2nd place in the Adult Division Bakers will need combine crust and fruit to perfection to impress this year’s judges:

Collect a stamp at each of the locations listed in the Passport and bring it back to the INFORMATION TENT. There, you’ll spin the Prize Wheel to find out what you’ve won!

Passports are available in most buildings and at the INFORMATION TENT - where Fairgrounds Foundation volunteers will answer your questions about the Fair. They can tell you where entertainment is happening, times for those shows and how to navigate to any destination you seek.

Also at the INFORMATION TENT, you can purchase your Fair souvenirs - hats, shirts, pins, posters, keychains and more!

You’ll have a great time traveling through the Fair with your Passport!

OPENING DAY BARBECUE

Bring your appetite on Opening Day!

The Santa Cruz County Farm Bureau will again be sponsoring, along with the Watsonville Firefighters Association, the Fair’s Opening Day Barbecue. The Watsonville Firefighters Association will be cooking up a delicious barbecue lunch!

On the menu: barbecue tri-tip, beans, salad, French bread and coffee or lemonade.

“This barbecue is a tradition to kick-off the County Fair. The firefighters do an excellent job in preparing the food. We invite everyone to come to this event,” says Farm Bureau President, Dennis Webb. When: Wednesday, September 11, 2024. The barbecue starts at noon and continues until the food runs out (normally 2:30pm)

Where: Paddy Smith Park, between the Fine Arts Building and JJ Crosetti Building

Cost: $22 for adults, $18 for seniors and $10 for children ages 5-11

Handspun/Handwoven Harvest Building

This is an exciting year for the Handspun-Handwoven Department! We’ve moved to a new home!

We’ve left the “Pioneer Days” of Yesterday’s Farm and the Codiga Museum and have joined the “Modern Ways” found in the Harvest Building.

For our crafters/makers this is no problem. We practice an art as old as time and as modern as computers. As long as humans have needed cloth and/or baskets –spinners and weavers have been there to work their magic of creation.

Into the future, our makers will push the limits of their skills to stay on the cutting-edge of technology. Speaking of technology, did you know the Jacquard loom has been

acknowledged as the first “computer!” This is because it used perforated metal “cards” linked together to create the patterns woven on the loom. Fun fact!

Our judged entries will be displayed inside the hall, adjacent to the kitchen area. And our exciting “Art-in-Action” stage will be just outside on the porch overlooking the adult gardens. Weavers with small, portable looms and spinners- with various kinds of spinning tools- will show off their talent and answer questions from inquiring minds, young and old, every day outside on the covered stage. Sometimes those school kids have amazingly interesting questions!

As in years past, we will be holding our WASCAR Competition on Saturday afternoon. Never heard of WASCAR? The initials stand for “Wheels And Spindles Creative Arts Racing.” It’s the wackiest, most fun spinning competition you’ve ever witnessed! Spectators are welcome to cheer on the intrepid racers. And if you think you’re up to the challenge, you can join in the mayhem. You’re sure to have a good laugh!

Be sure to stop by and see what all the excitement is about! Our stage will be sporting colorful flags to guide you to our new home. You won’t be able to miss our colorful entries displayed in the Harvest Building. Come have a look, ask questions and if you’re adventurous… try your hand at spinning or weaving! There will be lots of helpers to get you started.

**Note: The large looms that were always in the vicinity of our display in the Codiga Museum are too cumbersome to move to the Harvest Building. Be sure you stop by Yesterday’s Farm and say “Hi” to those lonely weavers.

The Santa Cruz County Fair is excited to offer a Kiddie Korral! What’s this you ask?

It’s a grassy, shaded area in a quieter corner of the fairgrounds, near Paddy Smith Park. Babies, toddlers, young children and their guardians can socialize and get away from the crowds for a spell.

It’s safe and comfortable space for families to take a break while the little ones run around or are entertained by our awesome volunteers. Then, when the energetic toddler has blown off some steam, the family can explore the rest of the Fair in harmony.

Before the gates open on the first day of the Fair, there’s an event you don’t want to miss.

As part of the Opening Ceremonies, The Santa Cruz County Fair is proud to host a Quilts of Valor presentation.

Just before noon on Wednesday September 11th, very deserving veterans, who were nominated by family or friends, will receive a handsewn quilt.

A biography of the veterans and their service will be read. It’s a tender moment in time… a chance honor these military heroes and show them our appreciation.

The Mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover Service Members and Veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.

You’ve never heard your kids laugh so hard!

The Magic of Frank Thurston is an interactive, fun-filled, laughter-packed, family, comedy magic show.

It’s the perfect show for people of all ages.

Frank entertains as well as mystifies!

He’s known as the "Magician of FAMILYFUN!"

Frank Thurston was voted Best Magician in Bakersfield and has been picked as Kern County’s Favorite Magician since 1984. He’s also a performing-member at the world-famous Hollywood Magic Castle.

or more than three decades, the tiny inhab itants of the Santa Cruz County Fair Bug Barn have entertained and educated fairgoers of all ages.

This year's theme is Bugs! Full STEAM Ahead! The Barn is buzzing with bug-related activities in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM).

Be sure to stop by and visit our Tri-County Schools and Youth Program insect displays and UC Davis Bohart Museum of Entomology live insect station.

And, the Gilroy Beekeepers Association brings us the secret life of honeybees. See honeybees at work in a live demonstration hive. If you’re lucky, you’ll learn how to find the queen bee! You can also learn about beekeeping and the crucial role honeybees play in food crop production. And, how you can save bees in your own backyard and become a bee advocate.

Also in the Bug Barn, step into the magical world of Gilroy Gardens. Find out how to grow plants through hydroponics. Ask expert volunteers about the fascinating Tree Circus and how to appreciate horticulture.

The Bug Barn investigates the fascinating relationship between insects, agriculture and people.

Department

This department is for the birds… and we mean that in the best way possible!

We have fun and exciting new contests at the Poultry Barn this year! Don’t miss the Chicken Costume Contest! Kids will dress up their favorite chicken and compete on Friday afternoon. On Wednesday morning, the Most Handsome Rooster and Most Beautiful Hen contests will be judged. And, check out the winners of our Decorated Egg Contest and Traditional Egg Contest.

Poultry showmanship is also a must see! Our most experienced Poultry Youth show off their knowledge and how well they have worked with their birds, competing for the Champion Poultry Showmanship belt buckle.

Our breed show will be judged on Wednesday morning. That will include the meat birds. This year, the meat bird pens will go to auction on Saturday.

Come and roam around our Poultry Barn to see the mama hen and chick display, quails and racing pigeons. And of course, we’ll have our full display of many different breeds of chickens, ducks, and turkeys.

The Poultry Barn is a great place to interact with both chickens and the people who love them!

2 Roaming Acts

Jeremy the Juggler

Jeremy Shafer is a colorful character! He rides his unicycle around the Fair entertaining kids and parents with his masterful juggling and downright silly antics!

He plays his hands like a flute, beatboxes, and dances salsa… all while juggling.

Jeremy is also a world-famous origami designer and YouTuber with more than 250 million views. If he can stay in one place long enough, you might get to see his one-of-akind origami act.

And if you’re really lucky, you might catch him jumping in with our roaming Mariachi Band— and singing lead vocals!

Yes, Jeremy the Juggler juggles many talents! He’s what you might call a Renaissance Man… or, Renaissance Clown.

Livestock Lawn

Track and field… on four legs!

The famous All-Alaskan Racing Pigs are back to hog the spotlight at the Santa Cruz County Fair. These fast and furious farm animals tackle the 100-yard dash and the 50-yard-high hurdles as you’ve never experienced them before.

The prestigious porkers are the fastest and funniest athletes you’ll see anywhere. They’ve brought home the bacon from shows all over the western U.S. and Alaska.

“They love what they do and they like people,” says manager Bart Noll. “We’re humbled by the overflow crowds and hope you’re having as much fun as we are.”

Lucky audience members (Pick me! Pick me!) are chosen to lead their section in cheering on each pig. Big bragging rights go to the winning team!

The pigs are powered by cookies. That’s the treat they’re racing to win. A race lasts just six seconds… but luckily, there are four races in each show.

In between shows, the pigs chillax in an air-conditioned trailer filled with fresh pine or cedar bedding. And yes, they eat well.

After the race, stick around for an opportunity to meet one of the little piggies. They love to pose for pictures… they’re real hams!

Cisco Jim

Cisco Jim, and his steady steed, remind us of the good ‘ole days here in the West.

The Singing Cowboy sits atop Taza de Mogollon. The duo is roaming the fairgrounds with Cisco Jim singing and telling stories. As a retired educator, Cisco Jim has so much to teach us.

Taza is a Spanish Barb, a direct descendent of the first horses brought to the New World from Spain.

Cisco is a long-time member of the International Western Music Association. And, he has played the role of “Town Marshal” at Roaring Camp Railroads, in Felton, since 2016.

Cisco lives on a small horse ranch in Aromas, California. When you encounter this roving serenade, you’re in for a treat.

Heritage Hog Scholarship 2024

The Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds Foundation has selected Watsonville FFA member, Irene Torres, as the 2024 recipient of the $3,000 Heritage Hog Scholarship.

Irene raised this year’s Heritage Hog, donated by Country Hills Feed. The hog will be on display at the Fair… then sold on September 14th, at the Junior Livestock Auction.

As Student of the Year for the Agriculture Department at Watsonville High, Irene has demonstrated leadership and dedication. She has raised and sold hogs through her school’s FFA Chapter and independently managed the chicken cooperative for the past three years.

In her own words, Irene has as deep appre ciation for agriculture and the rigorous work it entails. She dreams of having a farm of her own. Irene’s passion and vision will drive meaningful change in the agricultural industry.

Irene will be attending Chico State to study Sustainable Agribusiness.

The Foundation congratulates Irene on her accomplishments raising and exhibiting livestock… and wishes her the greatest success in her future endeavors.

Livestock Lawn

The Santa Cruz County Fair boasts many creatures, big and small. Cows and pigs… sometimes birds and reptiles.

But no creature competes with the grandeur of the camel! Yes, we have camel rides!

Grab a friend or two (camels can carry more than half their weight!) and hop on the back of a Dromedary Camel. Animal fact: Dromedary Camels have one hump.

These camels were acquired from domestic breeders in the United States, as camels are no longer allowed to be imported into the U.S.

Their owner, Kyle McGranahan, is a real-life cowboy who used to train horses. Until one fateful day, when a friend asked him to train a camel. He fell in love with the animals and sold his horses. He now works exclusively with camels.

The camels enjoy a diet like that of horses- grass, hay, and grain. Contrary to what many people think, the humps of the camels are not filled with water. They’re filled with dense fat. This fat can hold water for up to three weeks, which allows camels to survive for long periods of time without water in the desert. And there’s no need to be afraid, camels do no spit or bite. That’s a llama thing. (Sorry llamas, but it’s true.)

All the camels are extremely docile and enjoy being around people. Climb into the saddle for the ride of a lifetime… and get a pretty awesome photo too!

ou’ll be very excited to stumble upon this roving act—on wheels!

When you encounter Cooper Hennings and his Wagon of Whimsy… you’ll be treated to a one-of-a-kind experience that includes balloon animals, magic tricks, trivia and team games.

“Coop” has more than 20 years of family-centric entertainment experience. He’ll take you from wide-eyed wandering to excited exploration.

The contestants of our famous Diaper Derby may not break a sweat… but spectators will laugh until their sides hurt!

Yes, we put babies to the test in this crawling contest.

The babies inch their way to victory by making a beeline for a parent at the finish line. Some hustle… some just sit… others wander off.

Still, it ain’t over ‘til it’s over! You never know which infant will pull off the win.

The Toddler Contest moves along a little more quickly… as the participants can, well, toddle.

Saturday, September 14th at 1pm

The Diaper Derby is the baby of beloved Fair supporter, Loretta Estrada.

Estrada started the tradition 15 years ago, when her grand-daughter Paris was a baby.

She added the Toddler Contest so Paris, and the other original baby contestants, could continue to compete—and their families could continue to enjoy the event.

The first year of the Toddler Contest, the winner was the little one who’d won the Diaper Derby the previous year! We also had three sets of twins!

These events have roots in the celebrations held in pioneer communities. They were part of the Fair in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

The winning babies and toddlers will take home prizes… but nothing beats the bragging rights!

Ed Camp

The Fair is always full of fun… and new this year, we’re adding education!

But here’s the best part- the learning is also fun!

It’s called Ed Camp!

Curious young learners should head to the Ball Park, behind the Carnival Midway. There, they’ll find the sights and sounds of exciting educational opportunities.

Kids can experience hands-on learning with circuits, forensics activities, robotics, nature journaling, sticker making, math and more.

Educators from throughout Monterey Bay are contributing to the many live and interactive activities at Ed Camp, including Dr. Heather Wygant, Science Coordinator with the Santa Cruz County Office of Education and Kimi Sakamoto Steidl, Associate Faculty Member in the Early Childhood Education Department at Cabrillo College.

“After I attended the annual S.T.E.A.M. Science Fair earlier this year and saw all the great work Heather Wygant had done to put the event together, I just knew I had to convince her and her amazing team of staff and volunteers to put something on for the annual Fair as well. Heather was on board immediately, and between her and our long-time volunteer Kim Sakamoto Steidl, the program quickly turned into “Ed Camp” and took on a life of its own! Please join us for the first year of hopefully many Ed Camps to come at the Santa Cruz County Fair,” says Santa Cruz County Fair Manager, Zeke Fraser. Participating in Ed Camp:

LEGOs

JJ Crosetti Building

They may be among the tiniest particles at the Fair, but when pieced together they become larger-than-life creations.

We’re talking about LEGOs!

Inside the JJ Crosetti Building, you’ll find an elaborate display of LEGO creations. You have to take your time, walk slowly and look closely to see all the special details in each entry. LEGOmasters of all ages enter their creations in the Fair. The size and creativity of their work is a sight to behold!

The LEGO brand is near and dear to the hearts of generations worldwide. The company is one of the few continuously family-owned companies in the world. It was started in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen. Today it’s run by his great grandson, Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen. The LEGO name is an abbreviation of two Danish words “Leg Godt” which means “play well.”

The LEGO Department wishes every child-at-heart to “Lego” or “Play Well” as you enjoy the 2024 Santa Cruz County Fair.

Innovation Department

JJ Crosetti Building

Hello, fairgoers!

This is the perfect year to highlight our Innovation Department!

As you know, the 2024 theme is “Pioneer Days to Modern Ways. In the Innovation Department, we are showcasing how far society has come in terms of communication.

Step inside the JJ Crosetti Building to experience interactive displays on communication… from smoke signals to telephones. You’ll learn how methods of communication are the milestones of our history.

Don’t pass up this exciting and educational element of the Fair.

Escaramuza Charra

Main Horse Arena

Escaramuza Charra El Centenario is the only female equestrian event in the Mexican charrería.

The escaramuza means "skirmish." It consists of a team riding horses in choreographed synchronized maneuvers to music. The women ride side-saddle and wear traditional Mexican outfits including sombreros, dresses, and matching accessories. A team consists of 16 women, but only 8 rides at a time. The routine is practiced in a circular arena.

The escaramuza season runs from February to November. The U.S. nationals are held on Labor Day weekend. The grand finale is held in Mexico. The event brings together more than 80 teams from both countries.

The Santa Cruz County Fair is actually two events in one! In addition to the Fair and all its fixins’… the fairgrounds are home to a multi-day Horse Show, featuring English and Western riding.

You don’t have to be an equestrian to enjoy and appre ciate what these talented riders can do! Grab a seat in the bleachers and prepare to be amazed!

The most colorful building at the Fair! This year’s Floriculture display is dedicated to past Floriculture Department Head, Katy Bannister. Take a moment and enjoy the pleasantly shaded “Katy’s Courtyard” at the gate area between Heritage Hall and the Floriculture Building. The garden has been replanted, giant Dahlia medallions are mounted along the wall and a plaque to Katy now resides in the courtyard.

New for 2024, Floriculture will have a “Touch Table” of various plant parts that kids can handle and explore. This demonstrates the diversity of colors, shapes, textures and smells in garden plants.

As in past years, Dahlias will be a large part of the display in Floriculture. Members of the Monterey Bay Dahlia Society are competing for awards in one of the largest Dahlia shows in the state.

Santa Cruz and Watsonville Bonsai Club members will display dozens of stunningly shaped trees. Members will be on hand to answer questions and demonstrate techniques.

Watsonville High School’s Flower Arrangement students will bring their first week of class individual arrangements to be reviewed by the judges. Outdoor Gardens-- entered by kids as young as 6-years-old, garden clubs and families-will line the street and lawn area around the Floriculture Building.

The Rose Garden

Stop and smell the roses… in our Rose Garden!

The Monterey Bay Rose Society has maintained the Rose Garden, at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds, since 2009.

There are about 130 roses in the garden. We invite you to take a stroll through the abundant leafy bushes… where the fantastic flowers provide a colorful and sweet-smelling backdrop. It’s an oasis amid all the hustle and bustle of the Fair.

The goal of the Rose Society is to educate the

2024 Floriculture Demonstrations:

• Daily - Bonsai Tree training demonstrations

• Daily - “Touch Table” for kids

• Wednesday and Thursday 4pm-6pm - Flower Arrangement demonstrations with a chance to win an arrangement

• Friday and Saturday 4pm-6pm - “DYI Corsage Making” – make and take home a beautiful corsage or boutonniere, with the help of Floriculture Department members

public on growing and caring for roses in our area.

The group hosts a workday the second Saturday of every month, from 10am until noon. Everyone is welcome to come and help nurture these beautiful blooms.

Agriculture-Horticulture (Ag-Hort)

Great gourd!

When you step inside the Harvest Building, you’re treated to incredible sights to see.

Most notably, giant pumpkins! The gigantic gourds are grown by local farmers and they weigh hundreds of pounds. You might question if the pumpkins are real. They are!

Other oddly big produce on display are giant apples and heaviest zucchinis.

Stroll past more exhibits and

you might find something shocking- like a zucchini in a bikini! There are agricultural-themed contests like best dressed vegetable, prettiest pumpkin and veggie creatures. It’s a creative way to get involved in agriculture.

Agriculture is at the root of the Fair. It’s a very important business and we make learning about it fun!

“So many kids don’t know where their food comes from. It’s fun for

them to learn it doesn’t come from the grocery store,” says Kayce Pavlovich, co-chair of the Agriculture/ Horticulture Committee.

The Agriculture-Horticulture Department is also offering Martinelli’s tastings and berry and carrot samples.

Just don’t let the scarecrows frighten you away… or you’ll really miss out!

LOS MORALITOS CIRCUS

Ball Park

The Los Moralitos Circus brings family fun and excitement with a high-energy performance of tumbling, acrobats, unicycles, aerialists and more.

Los Moralitos is made up of 4th and 5th generation of circus performers. They take great pride in putting together a first-class professional performance for all ages.

Owner, Jonathan Vasquez, performs great stunts in the 30-foot tall “Wheel of Death…” at one point, he’ll even be blindfolded. The show also features the “Globe of Death” in which motorcyclists race past each other in 360-degree circles.

Then, there are the kids. Los Moralitos

Circus writes on Facebook, “There is no greater feeling then knowing our 5th generation is turning up to be as crazy and talented as our previous generations. Best part is, they are learning most of it on their own, which is pure. This can only be explained by having love for an art that blocks everything else in the world, which allows you to focus and pursue what you love most, we call it CIRCUS!!!”

Just when you think you can’t handle any more death-defying circus stunts, “Chuy the Clown” will offer some comic relief. He’ll leave your stomach sore from laughing so much!

“We are excited to be expanding out to your community and will hopefully make this a Fair we perform at for many years to come,” says Vasquez.

MONSTER TRUCKS & MOTOCROSS

An event that needs no intro duction—Monster Trucks and Motocross!

Two nights of rip-roaring excite ment await you at the Fair’s race track.

This motorsport event thrills and delights… as huge trucks and dare devil motorcycle riders whirl and twirl through the air. The only thing louder than the roar of the engines are the cheers from the crowd!

This year, featured Monster Trucks include Playing for Keeps, Enforcer, Wicked Strong and Hillbilly.*

There’s also a Monster Ride Truck and Freestyle Motocross featuring USA FMX!

Monster Trucks and Motocross roars into action at 7:15pm at the Racetrack, Wednesday and Thursday.

Yesterday’s Farm Presented by the Ag History Project

We are surrounded by “Modern Ways” in life – and even at the Fair.

But there’s a special place on the fairgrounds where “Pioneer Days” come to life!

When you enter through the main gate, turn right and you’ll find yourself in this quaint place called Yesterday’s Farm, sponsored by the Ag History Project.

Here, you’ll enjoy our many exhibits highlighting the history of agriculture on California’s Central Coast. We have a variety of (no cost) hands-on demonstrations and activities for people of all ages. Kids can grind grain into flour, pump water by hand, operate a simulator tractor and drive full size antique tractors.

Visit our Restoration Shop and see the projects we are actively work ing on. Talk

with our many talented volunteers who can answer your questions about historical machinery and the incredible progress attained in feeding and cloth ing all of us. Also,

please take advantage of the opportunity to learn more about how you can participate in our many varied programs.

On your way out of Yesterday’s Farm, please stop in our Gift Shop and purchase some unique souvenirs to take with you as you head back out to enjoy the rest of your Fair experience.

The Rodgers House

If you’re looking for a true “Pioneer Days” experience, you must visit the historic Rodgers House on Friday, September the 13th starting at 6:00 p.m.

We call it the Twilight Experience. The house takes on a magical glow as it is lit by low lighting and candles. A gentleman is playing the piano and staff are dressed in clothing from the late 1880s and early 1900s. Guests are invited to walk through the house and immerse themselves in the year 1878.

The Rodgers House was built in the 1870s by James Rodgers. The house contains archives chronicling its

Santa Cruz Model Railroad Club

All aboard! This year, the Santa Cruz Model Railroad Club is celebrating 20 years at the Santa Cruz County Fair!

The Santa Cruz County Railroad Historical Society, better known as the Santa Cruz Model Railroad Club, is proud to have three scale model railroads on display.

The G Scale Garden layout is the largest. It operates outside in a garden setting. The outdoor setting also features Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends!

Inside the building, there are two layouts in operation. The HO layout is modeled after the Santa Cruz branch line from Watsonville to Santa Cruz… onto Felton and Olympia. The HO layout features the Capitola Trestle

and the Santa Cruz Boardwalk.

history, including stories of the Rodgers family and the history of the Pajaro Valley. Several notable family photographs feature author John Steinbeck, Esther Rodgers’ brother. One depicts Steinbeck carving the family’s Thanksgiving turkey.

The Rodgers House was moved to the fairgrounds in four pieces in late 1998. A determined team raised the money and hired the contractors who lovingly rebuilt the house… making it the showcase it is today.

The N Scale layout is the smallest scale. It’s modeled as Railroading Anywhere USA. The N Scale features many iconic American businesses and views.

The Santa Cruz Model Railroad Club is open to membership! People of all levels of enthusiasm are welcome to join. Members can enjoy club equipment, locomotives, rolling stock and controllers. You don’t need to own model railroad equipment to operate on the layouts. Individual and family memberships are available.

A TAYLOR SWIFT

Attention Swifties! You will never, ever, ever forget this show!

“Red – A Taylor Swift Tribute” is a jaw dropping, faithful recreation of a live Taylor Swift concert. RED is fronted by Lauren Corzine, a talented and beautiful young vocalist and performer. Throughout her career as a singer/ songwriter, Lauren was told she looks and sounds just like Taylor Swift. She decided to embrace her striking resemblance to the pop icon and founded RED… an epic journey through Taylor Swift’s entire discography.

The show leaves Swifties feeling like they saw Taylor Swift herself live in concert!

Lauren Corzine was born and raised in Texas. She’s scored three Top 100 songs and two Top 50 singles on the Texas Country Music Chart. She’s had the opportunity to share the stage with many prestigious country artists such

as Midland, Koe Wetzel, Parker McCollum and many more.

Lauren has been a hardcore, certified Swiftie since 2007 after seeing Taylor perform her song “Tim McGraw” at the 2007 CMA Awards.

Skye Dreams Drone Show

When night falls at the Fair, look up!

‘Modern Ways’ are on full display at this year’s Santa Cruz County Fair- with our NEW Skye Dreams Drone Show! Each night, 200 state-of-the-art drones will take to the air for a 12-minute show, choreographed to a custom music track.

No spoiler alerts here… but we can tell you our custom drone show includes a Salute to America, our mascot Space Kid and the UC Santa Cruz mascot, Sammy the Slug—all in lights!

“The show is always a team effort,” says Terry and Deb Toews of Skye Dreams LLC. “We meet at the site to survey the facility, work with the Fair’s management and creative team to create a music track and inventory of images for the show. Once the music and images are done, designers program the show and test fly the show virtually. The Drone Port launchpad is set up the day before the show starts, readying the 200 drones for flight. On the day of the show, the technical team charges the batteries, finalizes the file for the show and checks each drone for showtime!”

Skye Dreams is in its third year producing shows throughout central California. Our show features the newest drones, each equipped with three large 1600 lumen LED RGB lights capable of more than 2,000 colors.

“We do this because it brings joy to people. We love doing this!” says Deb.

La Movida 106.3 & La Buena present

Hailing from Baja California, Los Tiranos del Norte features lead vocalist/bajosexto player, Gustavo Cota. After signing to the Fonovisa label, the group debuted with an eponymous 1992 LP, followed by albums including Para Mi Reina, Inolvidables and Con Sangre Nortena.

Los Tiranos del Norte later signed with Sony International and released De la Tierra al Cielo. El Sol followed in 1998.

Los Tiranos Del Norte has established itself as a major player in the Latin music industry. The group has a particular sound that combines traditional Mexican music with contemporary elements. The drones take to the sky each evening of the Fair:

• On Wednesday and Thursday- the show starts at 8:30pm, following the Monster Truck shows.

• On Friday and Saturday- the show starts at 9:00pm, following the concert in the amphitheater.

• On Sunday- the show starts at 9:30pm, following the concert.

For the first time ever, the night sky above the fairgrounds will be alive with dancing lights—it’s a spectacular sight to see!

Are you a Flamingohead? If not, you will become one after seeing Antsy McClain and the Trailer Park Troubadours live at the Fair!

Antsy’s fans call themselves Flamingoheads in honor of the iconic pink, plastic figurines that have adorned front lawns for decades.

Antsy is hilarious, insightful and heartwarming.

Whether he’s performing solo or with his incredible band of musicians called the Trailer Park Troubadours, Antsy McClain will have you laughing ‘til your cheeks are sore and tearing up over the good stuff: love, family and friends.

“I love to make people laugh – if we can laugh, we can heal – and that will always be a big part of my shows. But without something deeper, it’s just a superficial cartoon: me with the big hair, plaid pants and funky clothes, the band with their antics. We have a good time up there, but we want to leave you with tears in your eyes from laughing and from recognizing that life is short so enjoy the ride,” says McClain.

Lola Montes –La Rebelde

In a high-energy performance, Lola Montes belts out her songs while riding her beautiful Andalusian horse – trained in Alta Escuela.

From a mariachi festival at the Hollywood Bowl to an afternoon in Chula Vista, CA where she sang an historic duet with the King, Vicente Fernandez... Montes always gets victorious applause from her audiences.

It’s fitting because her name means victory. Montes has been singing professionally since she was 8 years old.

She debuted her first record, Ahora va la mia, in 2014 with Arranque Records, Inc.

Her greatest loves are her horses, animals, guitar and her family.

Whether in high heels or cowgirl boots, Lola Montes is the brightest star of Mexican regional music.

Violin on Fire

Electric violinist Patrick Contreras has created a unique sound that blends classical, rock, soul, blues and Latino into a sound that is uniquely Contreras - Violin on Fire.

His story is interesting. Contreras was young Latino growing up on the wrong side of town when his parents gave him a toy violin as a gift. They had received it from a customer who didn’t have enough cash to pay their bill. His parents eventually bought him an inexpensive, real violin.

“I grew up in a pretty tough neighborhood, so I learned to play a lot more than what they taught in band and in youth symphonies,” says Contreras.

When he was 16 years old, Contreras was selected to play with the Fresno Youth Symphony. That led to trips to Europe with the youth symphony and to Africa to film for a universal care group. The trips changed his life.

Contreras’ sound is unique - immediately recognizable like Hendrix and Santana. He studied and opened for the late BB King, Al Jarreau, Stanley Clarke and The Wailers - before striking out on his own.

We are super-duper excited Karen Quest, America’s Funniest Cowgirl, is joining us at the Fair!

Quest’s Cowgirl Tricks are a comedic bonanza of trick roping, whip cracking, music, magic, audience participation and lots of whacky cowgirl shenanigans-- perfect for the whole family.

But wait, there’s more!

Everyone looks up to Over The Top™ Stilt Characters! You might meet Lucky Starr, Cowgirl. Pegg Legg, Pirate Queen (who has a real wooden leg). Grandma with her Giant Walker. Or Frances, the Farmer’s Daughter. When you encounter one of these characters, you’ll find out what a real high five feels like!

Karen Quest is a former circus girl with a B.A. in Theatre from California State University, Northridge. She has decades of experience performing in more in 25 states and ten countries.

She will delight, amaze, entertain… and take you to new heights.

Back in the Pioneer Days, winemaking was like a wild west saloon brawl!

Grapes being squished by boots, barrels leaking like sieves and the occasional tumbleweed rolling through the cellar.

Fast forward to Modern Ways, and it's like a fancy cocktail party with precision machines doing the stomping, barrels sealed tighter than a banker's vault and scientists analyzing every molecule like they're searching for the meaning of life.

Who knew making wine could go from cowboy chaos to scientific sophistication faster than you can say "bottoms up!”

Inside Heritage Hall, you’ll find a beautiful display of bottles of wine… bottles you won’t find at your local grocery store. The wine here comes from local, amateur winemakers. These winemakers have created their homemade wines from regionally and locally grown grapes and fruit.

2024 judging takes place on August 17th. This year we have 18 judges. Many are professionals from the Santa Cruz County area. Fairgoers can learn about how a judge scores all varieties of wine from the large display of the judging scorecards.

In early September, the winemakers get together to collect their awards which include Best of Show, Best of White Wines, Best of Red Wines and Best of Other Wines. They also share their wine, swap stories about their wine-making expertise and take part in an informal educational forum.

Fine Arts

Original and beautiful art fills every corner of our Fine Arts building. From drawings and paintings to sculpture and poetry.

And the best part is, you don’t only get to look at all the amazing creations… Fine Arts also offers live events and hands on activities for kids!

On Education Day, some lucky students get to participate in a Kids Paint-Along with retired San Jose State University art professor, Donna Thompson. In keeping with this year’s theme, Pioneer Days to Modern Ways, the kids will be painting Space People. Their work will be on display for all to see!

Also, there are two nights of Glass Blowing demonstrations! Nathan Bennett and his crew will amaze attendees

Harvest Building

We’ve come a long way, baby-- since ‘Pioneer Days.’

We used to churn our own butter, sew our own clothes and wash those clothes, by hand, in buckets. But thanks to ‘Modern Ways,’ we can now go to the grocery store and use a washing machine—and dryer. So many conveniences!

Yes, Home Arts have changed a lot. And while they are no longer a necessity, they still serve an important role in society. We still preserve food, sew, do needlework and quilt… but nowadays it’s for fun, relaxation and an outlet for creativity.

On Saturday, there’s a Poetry Reading hosted by Joseph Eaton. Light refreshments will be served.

We’re excited to announce the judging classes have been broken down into smaller, more specific categories. This makes judging easier and allows us to award more ribbons to the artists.

Also, the Poetry Department has grown so large—we needed to give it more space within the Fine Arts building. Look for the creative prose on the far back wall, to the left. Fine Arts – a delight for all of your senses!

This year, Home Arts has all the exhibits you’ve come to love… plus a few news ones. We’re always pleasantly surprised with what turns up in Home Arts.

If you’re feeling spicy, you’ll definitely want to pop into Home Arts for our annual Salsa Contest! Saturday at 3:30pm, our special guest judges will taste and savor several offerings… then decide which local salsa-maker takes home the top prize! Don’t miss the flavorful and friendly competition! Michael Mezmer has performed his death-defying and mind-blowing DangerMagik in front of millions of people in 25 countries. Venues include Disneyland, Las Vegas, the Great Wall of China, and the world-famous Magic Castle. Astonished audience members include princesses, presidents, and celebrities—namely, pop icon Michael Jackson.

But no venue is more excited to see him take the stage... than the Santa Cruz County Fair! It will be standing room only at the Tankhouse Stage.

DangerMagik is a family show featuring incredible demonstrations of organic magic phenomena. Mezmer uses razor blades, animal traps, staple guns, arrows, paintball guns, leather straps and chains to shock his audience. You think he could never survive the precarious situations he puts himself in… but that’s magic!

If you are among the bravest of fans, you can volunteer to join Mezmer on stage and be a part of his act. You’ll be amazed from a very up close and personal perspective.

The Society of American Magicians has named Michael Mezmer “Escape Artist of the Year” and “Best Illusionist.”

Mezmer showed signs of his unique talent at the tender age of five. As an adult, he has become a well-known and respected expert in the field of hypnosis. He is highly sought after as a lecturer as well as an entertainer. He presents quantum stress management workshops at corporate events and universities around the country. The International Hypnotherapy Conference has invited him to be a guest lecturer and starring performer. Whether you’re on stage or in the audience, Trance-Nosis is a show you don’t want to miss.

Percussive Dance

POWERHOUSE!!! combines innovative tap, precision clogging, Irish step dancing and explosive stomp into an electrifying dance experience. The show is highly interactive, exciting for all ages, culturally significant and contemporary at the same time. The dancers are selected from top competitive performers in the country.

We have a 30-year history in the fair and festival industry along with more TV appearances than any other percussive dance group in the country.

We also have an exciting curriculum-based arts education program. We tour fairs, performing art centers and schools throughout the country.
