Sweeping Views Snow Valley Peak Challenge Story BY RON ERSKINE PHOTOGRAPHS BY RON ERSKINE

AUGUST 11, 2017
very January 1, we begin the year by making a resolution with an eye toward self-improvement. Each of us could do a little less of this or a bit more of that, but we rarely stick with it. Several weeks into the new year, we revert to our old ways. Last January, a group of special people did more than make a resolution; they made a commitment that thrilled them a little and scared them a little. On a recent Saturday in July, 68 of your friends and neighbors fulfilled that commitment; they walked a 12 ½-mile round-trip that rose 2,100 feet to the top of Snow Valley Peak—a 9,214-foot summit with sweeping views of Lake Tahoe. ➝ 6

SNOW VALLEY PEAK CHALLENGE

DAY HIKE Ron Erskine challenged readers in January to make a New Year’s Resolution—a July trip to traverse Snow Valley Peak.

spring to reach the peak. They set aside vacation time, reserve accommodations and drive for hours. On the day of the challenge, they walk tough miles up a mountain slope fueled by air lacking 25 percent of the oxygen they are accustomed to breathing. After essentially fulfilling the challenge, the last little bit

deprives them of that moment of glory on the summit. It isn’t right. When I scouted Snow Valley Peak last year, I was delighted to see the trail to the summit was tough, but it was well-marked the entire way—anyone with the will and the strength would stand on the summit. We gathered on Friday, the day before the challenge, at the visitor center atop Carson Pass on State Highway 88 for a warm-up hike to stretch our legs and breath some of that thin mountain air. From this spot on the Pacific Crest Trail, a day hiker can visit alpine scenery usually reserved for backpackers who have logged many miles. Southbound from the trailhead, the first mile travels through a forest of lodgepole and western white pines before popping out into a high and wide world. Straight ahead, a snowy Round Top rose 2,000 feet above Winnemucca Lake still rimmed with icebergs. To

Mount Tallac, our challenge peak two years ago. A bite to eat; summit photos; excited chatter; lingering and looking. Not a cloud in the sky. A perfect day. Time to head back. To assure people who hike with me, I proudly proclaim my commitment to returning with at least 80 percent of the people I started with. Thankfully, I exceeded those standards. Sixty-eight came and 68 returned. The reason for tackling a challenge like Snow Valley Peak was written in the faces of all who came along and met the challenge. I salute you all.

the west, the infinite blue view over Caples Lake marked the beginning of the Sierra’s descent to the Central Valley. Phlox, marsh marigolds, buckwheat, and paintbrush decorated the spaces between snowfields along the trail. At Spooner Summit on State Highway 50 at the crest of the Carson Range, Saturday morning was beautiful—sunny and bright. The trailhead buzzed with lively chatter and equipment shuffling as people filled daypacks with the supplies they would need for the next six hours. We would need plenty of water since there were no streams along the way. One by one, people set out from the 7,146-foot trailhead toward Snow Valley Peak more than six miles and 2,100 vertical feet away. The trail climbed gently through cool air and over soft footing; ideal walking to begin a long day. The special landscape of the Tahoe Basin is simply too perfect to be an accident of nature. Beneath a forest of noticeably robust red fir and Jeffrey pines lay a picture perfect garden accented with granite boulders, manzanita ground cover and chinquapin shrubs that must surely be arranged according to the blueprints of a master gardener. Hikers know that if the peak is 2,000 feet above the trailhead, there is heartache ahead. Somewhere there is a steep face with 20-some heartbreaking switchbacks. Not here. Steadily, but so slowly that we barely noticed, we rose. The forest began to thin exposing sliver views of Lake Tahoe. Finally, two miles from the top, we popped into a bright world of sagebrush and flowers dotted with a few wind-sculpted pines; the forest’s last gasp. With each step, the view of Lake Tahoe grew wider. Snow Valley Peak is not a remote wilderness mountain. Antennae and various towers crowd the actual peak, but from a rocky promontory just below, the spectacle equals any in the world. As if through an airplane window, we enjoyed an unobstructed view of the full blue sweep of Lake Tahoe 3,000 feet below. Across the way, lingering snowpack clung to the peaks of the Crystal Range in Desolation Valley including impressive

henever a pet owner leaves the house, a few mandatory questions come to mind: Do they have enough food? Did I leave out anything dangerous? Will she or he get lonely and make too much noise? Pet boarding services help relieve these questions, and the South Valley has some great options. Dog House Inn, located in Gilroy, started as a specialized dog-training facility in 2005. The business has since expanded to include dog daycare and boarding.
Doug and Kit—who make up the D and K in DanK Pet Sitting—have a reputation for making dogs and cats feel right at home. What sets them apart is the breadth of animals they care for, as well as the fact that their cat and dog boarding programs are cage free. Business owner Doug Sourbeer says the business started with just going over to friends’ houses and looking after their pets once in awhile, but in 2011 it made sense to turn it into a service. Things are still up and running six years later and, according to Sourbeer, business is booming. “The hardest part is just always being ready to go. I haven’t been able to call in sick since I started,” Sourbeer explains. In addition to specializing in dogs and cats, Doug and Kit aren’t afraid to look after goats, horses, chickens, pigs and birds either. “I don’t do elephants though,” Sourbeer says with a laugh. Whether it’s an overseas getaway or a quick trip out of state, South Valley pet owners can relax in knowing their extended family members will be well-looked after.

t’s the final stretch of summer break and school is starting up soon, but the season is not over yet. Though summer camps are coming to a close and the children are bored at home, there’s still plenty do right here in the South Valley that will keep the youngsters busy. Morgan Hill Riding Company is open Sunday through Friday giving children every chance chance to embrace their inner cowgirl or cowboy. Founded just two years ago, the independently-run operation
at Big Oak Ranch offers individualized lessons for those with a passion for horses and an interest in riding. Head trainer Crysta Causin understands her clients and specializes in showing beginning riders how to have a good time. Not all the fun has to be outside, kids will definitely get their share of exercise and entertainment at Rockin Jump Gilroy. The massive warehouse turned trampoline park has a dodgeball arena, a rock climbing wall, a “slam dunk zone” as well as a free jump area—and that’s just a sneak peek.
Less heavy hitting than other shooting sports, Laser Recon uses high-powered infrared beams designed to hit a variety of sensors attached to the player’s outfit. Connecting bat to ball is a surprisingly distinctive feeling for both entertainment and therapeutic purposes at Practice Diamond in San Martin. With opportunities to perfect your swing on weekends and weekday afternoons, Practice Diamond offers batting practice and a fun, cost-friendly way to burn off some energy. For the water-loving kids, Morgan Hill Aquatics Center offers a number of attractions for kids. Kids can swoosh down the two large water slides or have a go at the inflatable obstacle course. There’s also a water playground and a water “spray ground” as it is known. If none of that piques any interest, just cool off and take a dip in the recreational pool.

he lushest and most scenic of our region, Martin Ranch Winery is the Garden of Eden of wineries. Complete with its own pond, vegetable garden and acres of vineyards, the winery is tucked among the green hills which surround them. Like their award-winning wines, Therese and Dan Martin are well-balanced in their winemaking. Therese, with advanced olfactory senses, is considered a super-smeller while Dan, with his superior taste buds, is a super-taster. This contrast leads to Therese’s label, Therese’s Vineyards, and wines made in the Old World style of winemaking and Dan’s label, JD Hurley, with his wines made in the New World style. Therese’s wines have an
intoxicating bouquet. As typical of Old World styles, her wines have a refined elegance; fruit forward and dry. Dan’s wines, on the other hand tend toward the New World style; rich and bold. The 2014 Therese Vineyards Chardonnay ($35) is uniquely aged in acacia wood barrels; refreshing melon and crisp on the palate. A smoky-soft 2013 Syrah ($29), with a little spice and star anise, is made from Dos Ninas Vineyard grapes in Gilroy. Dan’s 2013 JD Hurley Merlot ($25.95) won best of class at this year’s San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. With loads of blackberry and spice it is an easy-drinking wine. Cabernet lovers can choose from either label. The 2011 Therese Vineyards ($49) is a gold medal winner. Bing cherry and smooth tannins provide a taste of earthly heaven.

I started a career in Real Estate so I could help people make their dreams of owning a home come true. Owning your own home is one of everyone’s biggest dreams! And I get enjoyment out of seeing dreams come true. I have been working in Real Estate since 2003, making deals throughout California. I like working with sellers because they are moving on to another adventure in their future of home buying – either upgrading or downsizing. I like working with buyers because I like to see their reactions to the houses we look at. I also like the fulfillment of making their dream of owning a home come true. The most important thing I do for my clients is making myself available at all times – 7 days a week – morning, afternoon and evening.
