Elissa Nesheim’s landscapes are out of this world—almost BY DEBRA ESKINAZI PHOTOGRAPHS BY LAURA JOHNSTON

fter leaving her home in the Midwest six years ago, Elissa Nesheim was homesick. She’d grown fond of the countryside of South Dakota where she called home for more than three decades. “It was hard for me to let go of my connection to South Dakota because I grew up there for 32 years,” she says. Nesheim, 38, says she struggled to let go of that feeling that it was the only place she was ever going to call home. And, well, it’s not surprising—the varied landscape of South Dakota has captivated native inhabitants and settlers alike from the creation narratives of the Sioux rising out of the great plains like the dense Ponderosa Pines of the Black Hills to the frontier stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s accounts of vast grasslands— where the golden earth meets the edge of the blue sky. ➝ 6

But they were being uprooted— destined to find a new place to call home. Nesheim and her family nearly settled in Virginia, when her husband, Bob, a software engineer, ended up getting a job out in California. They packed up their daughter and son, Aily and Toby, now 18 and 11, and settled in Gilroy. “Well I connected right away to the landscape,” says Nesheim. “I love those hills. The Gavilan hills they're so pretty and I love Gilroy. I think that we chose the perfect place. The landscape surrounding us is so varied even here and it’s really fun to see all the clouds move in all the time. I think it was just the idea maybe of letting go.” So when Nesheim, a watercolor landscape artist, approached Gilroy Arts Alliance executive director Kevin Heath with her idea to have an artist-in-residence at the Gilroy Center for the Arts, he said Nesheim, who also happens to be president of the Gilroy Arts Alliance board, was the perfect artist to launch the project. The Center’s gallery has been

transformed into a working studio, where Nesheim is developing a series of landscapes beginning with the earliest memories of her childhood in South Dakota. “From left to right it goes around the room from my earliest memory to the present day and then it goes from the morning until night,” says Nesheim. “I feel like that's something that just looking at the landscape in so many different places has really taught me too,” she says. “It’s that you can connect with any landscape even though for a really long time it was hard for me to let go of my connection to South Dakota.” Nesheim’s installation is very intuitive, she uses no props or photographs to trigger memories for her watercolor paintings. “I am just kind of going as I go, I don’t plan anything,” says Nesheim. “I know I want to end up in Gilroy.” An arts graduate from Black Hills State University, Nesheim reveals she didn’t really get into watercolor until attending the liberal arts college.

a different landscape memory.

then tearing it up,” he says. “The pieces are then coordinated with pieces torn from another painting and reconstructed into a new landscape painting. That, alone, is unique. Elissa has taken it step further. She continues this process and the end result will be her memories, from child to adult. I've never seen anything of this magnitude at the Center before.” Nesheim’s artwork captivates— with her interpretations of windy, flat, prairies, where the horizon meets the sky at the edge of the earth, contrasting frozen winters with hot summers, fertile soil and lush grasses against sedimentary rock of the eroding badlands, her landscape scenes are stunning and entirely absent of human elements. “My highest goal is definitely to connect people to the undiscovered landscape, in it’s purest form without human influences,” she says. “I like to imagine how the landscape might have looked before we were here.” An environmentalist in her own right, Nesheim says that by ➝ 8

“I fell in love with the medium and just kept painting with it and took as many classes as I could,” she says. Nesheim’s works in the exhibit, all landscape-inspired, are collages of earth and sky. Nesheim uses few tools— simple watercolor paints, a range of brushes and, interestingly, X-Acto knives. She prepares each sheet by stretching wet paper to ready it for paint. “I usually paint the sky separate and then a whole separate sheet for the landscape and then after it’s completely dry I tear it and rip it apart using the panels as kind of a measuring stick—almost to make sure I have the right length and I kind of put together—now that I am further in I kind of put together smaller ones,” says Nesheim. “I’ll have smaller pieces for people to purchase. I am going to use the paper that I painted on for the little ones.” Heath says Nesheim’s art is visually stimulating and personal. “The concept of creating a piece,

connecting people to the landscape “in any way possible will ensure that the natural world endures.” For Nesheim, her depictions of landscape are more like memories. Attributing her long road trips through the countryside—her only vantage being a framed window of her personal memory bank—to the mental pictures she says she’s collected over time. “I just saved up all of these images and I was always in awe of the great big clouds in South Dakota,” she says. “As you grow up and let go of the attachment of your home—a place that you grew up in—you realize that every place has these things, these great vistas, these giant clouds—so it’s been just kind of lifelong admiration of the landscape.” While she pushes use of color in innovative ways, she steers clear of photographic painting and realism, asking: “Do the hills really look like that? Do prairies really make those lines? Do buttes have the purple in them?” “I think helped me appreciate

other landscape even more than I already did and just making things even less specific helps people to connect—like a sort of dreamy abstract place almost,” says Nesheim. She hopes that in making the work nonspecific people will develop a deeper appreciation for their own landscape. “I like it when people can kind of bend it a little bit and say ‘Oh maybe that reminds me of my grandma’s house when I was growing up. That looks like the field right outside her back door.’” Nesheim says she paints out of necessity. “I paint because I have to, I have a need inside me to paint what I see in my deepest soul and share it with others hoping it will also trigger the same emotions in them.” She’s inspired by our interconnectedness and cites 15th century poet and Indian mystic Kabir’s quote as the embodiment of that notion: “The river that flows in you also flows in me.” Adding, “Art is about connection, connecting

people through their unique perspectives on the world, each other and our many differences.” Nesheim’s project, once complete, will consist of 10 watercolor collages each depicting a different memory from her life translated into in 30 feet of ethereal watercolor wisdom. Each of the 10 paintings are created on 36 inch wide by 48 inch tall wooden panels, the first of which is her earliest memory of landscape. “That’s my grandparents ranch,” says Nesheim. “That’s the view of the butte from my grandparents ranch at the side of Edgemont, South Dakota.” Then, in succession, her memories of the prairie outside of Rapid City, then Black Hills in the distance in the third one—she added that as the memory came to life—almost as an afterthought. The panels Nesheim is using add an interesting organic component to the compositions of her paintings—where they sometimes peek through.

“I really love these panels a lot,” says Nesheim. “I think it gives that layer of reality almost peeking in and I wanted them to stay organized in shape as if you tore them out of the landscape and pasted them up and you only got pieces of them.” In addition to the larger project, Nesheim will be selling smaller landscapes comprised of the remnants of the current work, as well as other smaller items on display, including her “Owls Doing Things”—a whimsical take on life with the nocturnal birds taking the place of people—doing things. Nesheim is donating 50 percent of the proceeds to the Gilroy Arts Alliance. She hopes they can be used to fund another art show anything the art center may need—with prices of the works increasing at various milestones during the work. Nesheim says it’s important to keep these types of programs going and have places where people can come and look at art. “People just can’t get up to San Jose or San Francisco and go to the museum, go to the theater and it’s all right here,” she says. “I think it’s really important for people to come and experience different things.” Nesheim approached the Center with a new concept. “Elissa’s exhibit is ‘outside the box’, especially for Gilroy,” says Heath. “It raises the bar of what is possible with art and what is possible at the Center. I think local art teachers should bring their classes here to see what is possible. It something all ages can understand and appreciate. It’s a natural step in the growth of the Center, but I think Elissa bumped us up a couple of years on the timeline. At the Center you are surrounded by the beauty our world has to offer, and we offer a moment of respite from the harsh world outside.” Witness the Gilroy Arts Alliance Artist-in-Residence, ‘Intuitive Watercolor Installation: Reconstructing the Landscape’ through Sept. 30 at The Gilroy Center for the Arts. A closing reception will be held on Friday, Sept. 29 at 7341 Monterey St, Gilroy. For more information, visit gilroyartsalliance.com or elissasuewatercolors.com.

hen a group of past performers discover their beloved, but crumbling, Broadway theater is scheduled for demolition, they gather for one last hurrah in their old haunt. Based on the famous Ziegfeld Follies of Broadway, stars of the theatrical revue “Weismann's Follies” reminisce about their time on stage in South Valley Civic Theatre’s (SVCT) performance of Follies by Stephen Sondheim. Unlike most of SVCT’s shows, which rely on exciting set designs, Follies is anchored by elaborate costumes and musical numbers. The show’s costumers Michelle Griffin and Adrianne Wilkinson

worked together on the designs for the cast of 36. The actors, ages 17-70, perform much of the show as duets. “The 12 Follies ‘Ghosts’ each have a costume that is representative of a particular decade from the 1910s through the 1940s,” says Griffin, who researched costuming for each of the periods represented. With $2,000 and six weeks to produce what took original Broadway costumers two years and a budget of more than $100,000 to pull off, Griffin says they are proud of the results. “Each ‘Ghost’ costume has a unique shape and each elaborate headdress (created by Wilkinson) is very different from the next,” says Griffin. Griffin says they repurposed many products from Dollar Store scouring pads and wire trash cans

to car backrests—anything that could create a shape and be turned into a headpiece—the tallest of which is 3 ½ feet tall. “We used flowers, old jewelry, feathers from old costumes, fairy wings, Christmas ornaments and picks and so much more,” she says. Because the script calls for a limited color palette of black and white, the designers employed the use of texture, sparkle and costume shape to add visual interest. Griffin says the workload was tremendous and unlike any of other 10 shows she’s costumed for. “This has been my biggest challenge and has put forth the most spectacular costumes.” She says they were fortunate to receive a large amount of help from the cast who took part in sewing, painting and rhinestoning of the costumes. A powerful complement to the embellished ensembles is the music that accompanies the performance. “We’ve changed the show through live orchestra, elaborate costumes and very strong vocal, choreography and acting talent,” says the show’s producer Marianne Snook. Though Follies is the seventh show Snook has produced, she says this is her first all-adult cast. Snook says the shows characters reconsider their lives and how they acted as friends. There is a lot of rehashing of relationship issues during the show, which she says is achieved through flashbacks as each of the actors are “paired” with their younger selves—ghost dancers—“playing out the vision of the memory they are speaking of.” Snook says the Sondheim’s songs are emotional and complex, resonating with anyone looking at their life in retrospect. Reflecting on their glory days, taking stock of their lives—a compendium of dreams. Silicon Valley Civic Theatre presents ‘Follies’. Performances run Sept. 8-Oct. 7 at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, 17090 Monterey Road, Morgan Hill. For more information, visit: svct.org.

They will be taking center stage as a part of the Garden Concert Series in Gilroy on Friday, Sept. 22 starting at 6:30pm. For reservations call 408.847.4746 or contact etcteach@yahoo.com. GROWING GARLIC Though it matures in the spring or early summer, garlic is planted in the fall. Learn how to select the best varieties for the local area, how to prepare the soil, when and how to plant, grow, harvest and store garlic bulbs. With proper curing your garlic will last until next year’s garlic is ready. With careful planning you will never have to buy garlic again. The event will be held on Saturday, Sept.23 at 10am at St. Louise Hospital Teaching & Demo Garden 9400 No Name Uno Way.

summer sipper with notes of peach and pear that finished with a taste of buttered rice. Moving on to the reds, I tried their 2013 Pinot Noir ($24) out of Santa Cruz mountains. A swirl of my glass showed off the deep ruby color and fresh strawberry aromas. For me, the show-stopping wine is the 2012 Petite Sirah ($32), from Santa Clara Valley. Made from grapes that grew during the hot, sunny summer of 2011; the result is an inky dark, full-bodied wine, with lots of fruit up front, a smoky tobacco middle and a peppery finish. You’ll have to add your name to a waitlist for one of their top-selling dessert wines, Apribella ($20), an apricot fruit wine, that always sells out. The tasting room has a large assortment of gifts, garlic treats and their world-famous garlic wine.

apazzini Winery has been a visual icon along Highway 101 since 1962 when it first opened. The Larson brothers, Alex and Charlie, purchased the winery in 2000 to continue the long tradition of fine winemaking. Acting as sentries, two standard poodles were regally seated at the entrance of the tasting room. The tasting menu is extraordinarily diverse, divided into Whites, Reds, Sparkling and Dessert and World Famous Garlic Wine. In addition to better known varietals such as chardonnay, pinot noir, zinfandel and merlot, are the rarely seen varietals that include grignolini, sangiovese, barbera and carignane. My tasting started with the 2016 Grignolini Rose ($20), a delightful

A Passion for Plants

B

amboo. Do you love it or hate it? If you don’t think you like bamboo, let me try to change your mind. To start with, bamboo is a collective common name for hundreds (thousands?) of different plants (technically grasses). Bamboo can be less than a foot tall (at maturity) to more than 100 feet tall. The stems can be golden, black, striped or bulbous, the leaves can be from an inch long to 2 feet long, green, striped or edged in yellow or white. In other parts of the world, bamboo is used for building and scaffolding, bridges and fences. In this country you can find bamboo furniture, fishing rods, plant

stakes, clothing and even weapons. But all that is what can be done after harvesting bamboo, and we’re more interested in the ones that are still growing. First, it’s important to know there are two general types of bamboo, running and clumping. The names say it all. Clumping bamboo tends to stay where you plant it. The clump will enlarge a little bit every year, but is polite and willing to obey boundaries. Running bamboo is the type that, when planted in the wrong spot, can become a problem. Bamboo rhizomes can travel underground for as many as 5 feet from the original plant before sending new shoots skyward. The rhizomes can go under and

around many shallow barriers and suddenly appear in a totally unexpected and unfortunate location. Control depends on knowledge. It is possible to control a running bamboo by simply cutting the young rhizomes with a spade plunged straight down into the soil and following up with breaking off any young shoots that arise from the severed roots. I admire the simple beauty of golden bamboo, and love black bamboo for the contrast between black stems and green leaves. These are two of the most familiar running bamboos. Indocalamus tessellatus is much less common, but is one of the drama queens of the bamboo world with the largest leaves of all, reaching almost 2 feet long. Contrast that with Pleioblastus pygmaeus, a dwarf runner. This bamboo has tiny leaves and a short stature. It is such an aggressive grower that it can be used to stabilize slopes and for erosion control. Uncontrolled height can be a rangy 18 inches tall, but occasional mowing will keep it compact and very tidy in appearance. In general, clumping bamboo comes from the more temperate parts of the world, and some are quite tropical. The hardier varieties are worth the search, not only because of their obliging habit, but also for their beauty. Mexican weeping bamboo (Otatea acuminata aztectorum) is a lovely thing, with narrow, delicate leaves and a graceful, weeping habit. Most bamboo grow best in rich, moist soil with regular water when first planted. Some will tolerate considerable drought after they are well established. Many prefer shade to full sun. The Bamboo Garden at Foothill College has some 70 varieties planted in the ground, it’s a great place to view established plantings. Nancy Schramm is the third generation owner of Carman’s Nursery. REAL ESTATE

Realtor’s Corner

to take care of people’s needs and kind of spoil them in the process.

What makes you stand out among other Realtors in the area? I think that the good agents are out there all feel the same way—we want to be there for our clients and alleviate their stress. It’s supposed to be an exciting journey, but it can be a really stressful one. I think for me what stands out is that I can tell my clients what to expect from the process and what to expect from me, so I can deliver on that. But not all transactions are pleasant. I just finished a transaction with somebody who had to sell their mother's house because she just passed away. I think for me what sets me apart is empathizing with that client. I’m there for them regardless of what their reason is. I don’t differentiate the 300K buyer from the million dollar buyer because at the end of it, they’re people.

What is good about the current market?

BROAD RANGE Lori Robitaille Biasca of Pacific Oak Real Estate has offices in Morgan Hill and Hollister.

By DEBRA ESKINAZI

How did you get involved in real estate? I always wanted to get involved in real estate—I think it was really my career goal from a young age. I didn’t get started until I was an empty nester, mostly because it’s such a risk to be an independent contract and not have that promised salary. I think it was just a decision to go ahead and give it a try and I’m

really glad that I did—it’s been four years now.

What is your area of expertise? I really enjoy working with first time homebuyers because I think they have a lot of questions. I like mentoring and holding people’s hands. I think what I bring to the industry is what a lot of women my age bring—we’ve been mothers and wives and when you get to real estate it’s almost like second nature

How do you spend your free time? We have a small ranchette that’s like three acres—we have chickens, grapes and we go wine tasting or take our dog for a hike. We enjoy hanging out with friends and family. Contact Lori Robitaille Biasca at 408.314.4781 or visit her online at pacificoakrealestate.com.

What’s good are the equity gains that people have realized. Not just the seller who can sell their house from a million dollars, but the person that got into their first-time condo or house. Their equity gains have been good. This market is fraught with equity, which is why the Bay Area is the place to be.
