Diwali—a Hindu festival that beckons health, wealth and goodness
t’s mid-October, and in a quiet South Valley neighborhood this past weekend, several residents were out wrangling Christmas lights that they had put hastily away in January. Some chided themselves for not having done a neater job packing the lights away and fussed over fused bulbs. Some even drove to the nearest Target to find replacement lights, perplexing the poor customer service rep who looked around at his Halloween display and wondered why anyone was bothering about Christmas already. ➝ 6

Except of course, these residents weren’t preparing for Christmas. They were preparing for the Hindu Festival of Diwali. Hinduism is a cornucopia of different regional beliefs, and Diwali is one of the few occasions that is celebrated through all the subcategories of the religion. It is so popular that it draws participants from other religions. In the Tamil culture, Diwali is called Deepavalli, literally, the Light of the Lamp. This sums up the common thread that Diwali shares throughout South Asia. It is meant to be a celebration of light over dark, signifying the conquering of good over evil. Not surprisingly, it falls on what is predicted to be the darkest night on the lunar calendar—the lunar equivalent of the winter solstice, which usually falls in the late-October/early-November timeframe. Among the South Bay’s vibrant South Asian community, Diwali thrives as a festival. There are a few commonalities practiced by all.
Gifts of new clothes and jewelry are common, and not surprisingly, Diwali rivals Christmas as a retail boom for South Asian vendors in the Bay Area. Stores will stock new shipments of Indian goods, and entire retail fairs will mushroom up, taking place everywhere from hotel banquet centers to friends’ houses. Beyond the new clothes, traditional oil lamps (“diyas” or “deepam”) are a common tradition, and lighting them signifies welcoming light into the heart, mind and soul. Just as Christmas lights have replaced live candles, they also replace oil lamps for many, especially outdoors. Here in the South Valley, which is blessed with a Hindu population large enough to boast several sub-traditions, there are a multitude of subtle differences in the way Diwali is celebrated. Neeta Sri, for example, who hails from the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, fondly remembers gambling and

card games as a way of heralding in good luck. “It is customary to play card games all through the night, after fireworks,” says Sri. “A game called three-patti is the most popular, but any card games are…game.” Gujarati’s from western India celebrate it as the start of a new year, and their businesses often tie their fiscal years to the occasion. Some subcultures celebrate it as a multi-day festival that leads up to the darkest night, while others celebrate only the day of the darkest night. Other celebrants use this as a time to look inward—treating the occasion as a solemn one—meant to be marked by prayer. And even with these celebrants, there is a wide range of how the prayers are done, and even which Hindu deity is prayed to—with more than 32 million gods to choose from, Hinduism certainly has no dearth. Others mark the event with a party filled with dancing and music.
For these people, even meat and alcohol are acceptably consumed on this day—marking Diwali perhaps as the only Hindu occasion that is celebrated in this manner. The typical menu for Diwali thus varies widely, with everything from rice and various flatbreads being served as a staple, to a wide range of vegetable, lentil and meat dishes. Since it has such an all-encompassing tradition, Diwali is embraced among South Asians who practice religions other than Hinduism. The Jain and some Buddhist communities, for example, celebrate Diwali, as does the Sikh community, which marks the occasion with one of its own: Bhandi Choor Divas, observed as a day of the liberation of Guru Hargobind. Christians like Anu Mitha, who was raised Protestant in south India, celebrated Diwali with her Hindu neighbors, enjoying the celebratory fireworks and new clothes, along, of course, with the glorious Indian food. A big tradition she remembers is “Thaladeepavali,” where newly married couples celebrating their first Deepavalli/Diwali were gifted with presents by their in-laws. “It is very special, and usually they are endowed with lots of gifts from either side of the family—though it is more for [ladies],” says Mitha. “We get lots of sarees and jewelry.” Like many transplanted traditions, Diwali has been transformed in its new home, taking on new dimensions while keeping the core. The Christmas lights are an example. Some South Indian Tamils didn’t have the tradition of lighting lamps during Diwali, but have adopted it here in the South Bay, and will happily put up the lights for the sake of bridging worlds for their kids. Hinduism at its core is a religion that encourages tolerance. So, most Diwali revelers are happy to keep their lights up until after Christmas, joining in the festivity of lights that December brings. “Why not?” say a group of 7-yearolds, all from different ethnic backgrounds, as they trudge to school. “More reasons to celebrate!”

VERSATILE VINO Stephanie Snyder with general manager Steve Howard showcase three new releases from Sarah’s Vineyard.
Elegant sip
Flavorful new wines at Sarah’s Vineyard By BEV STENEHJEM

n one of the last summer weekends of the season I popped into Sarah’s Vineyard to sample the latest releases. The tasting room was bustling, while live music was entertaining picnickers outside on the patio. With the warm weather outside, general manager Steve Howard suggested I try the 2016 Vin Gris ($22)—a dry rose made from Sarah’s estate pinot noir. Tim Slater, the winemaker, aged the wine in neutral French oak before coaxing out subtle flavors of tea rose, sage and watermelon. Served well-chilled, it is a refreshing wine perfect with light salads and seafood. With effusive pride, Howard pointed out the recently unveiled 2014 Reserve Pinot Noir ($60)
which earned 93 points from Wine Enthusiast magazine. Elegant and reserved, this pinot noir is delicate but very flavorful. Take your time swirling and enjoying the beautiful aromas of lavender and violet wafting from the glass and ready for your first sip—you will taste plump blackberries and purple plum ending in a smooth, herbal finish. Versatile enough to enjoy as an aperitif or with roasted pheasant surrounded by potatoes dauphinoise and a wild mushroom dressing. Rounding out my tasting was the 2013 Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon ($50), an estate wine which spent two years maturing in French oak. Sweet cherry, dark chocolate and coffee notes on the nose and palate—this wine is meant for a filet mignon or an aged cheddar.

San Benito Stage Company’s Teen Musical, “All Shook Up” By JENNY ARBIZU
I
t’s not unheard of for a biker to invade a small town— it’s actually been a headline for the city of Hollister. So it shouldn’t be a surprise to hear that downtown Hollister is preparing, once again, to be taken over by another wild one: San Benito Stage Company’s teen musical, “All Shook Up.” Opening on Friday, Oct. 27, and running for three weekends, the musical features the songs of Elvis Presley. It is based on William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night and is set in the 1950s American Midwest. The show is directed by brother-and-sister team Aaron Hernandez and Angela (Jula) Prak, and
is co-produced by Brian Murphy and Camille Blevins. Musical numbers were choreographed by Raeann Collison and vocal direction was also done by Prak. In the story, lead character Natalie (Betsy Molchan) falls for the leather-jacket bearing roustabout, Chad (Roberto Nolasco). Her chances with him are slim, though, because Natalie is a tomboyish mechanic. Her chances become even slimmer when Chad falls for Miss Sandra (Marie Miskin), the caretaker of the town’s museum. But with the help of Natalie’s friend, Dennis (Jonathan Arciniega), who is secretly in love with Natalie, a wild scheme
develops for her to gain Chad’s interest. Wild love stories then ensue. It is a comedy of errors, with four love stories weaving in, out and around one another. But each story ultimately finds its rightful owner. The show also ties in political issues of that era, such as race and socioeconomic status. With a cast that ranges from 13- to 19-year-olds, audiences will enjoy hearing such popular Elvis songs as “Heartbreak Hotel,” “A Little Less Conversation,” and “It’s Now or Never.” Scenes with “Jailhouse Rock” and “Blue Suede Shoes” give audiences a great treat with the scenery and dance numbers. Lesser known ballads of Presley’s, such as “There’s Always Me” and “Fools in Love,” even find a place in tender storylines. Perhaps the most poignant part of the show is the touching rendition of “Can’t Help Falling in Love,” sung by the cast at two different times in the show. Murphy said this cast is more than ready to deliver a great show on opening night. He said rehearsals have gone extremely well, largely in part to the relationships of Prak and Hernandez with the cast. “We’ve had shows where we’ve been worried about opening night. With this show, we’re having really good runs of it weeks before. By the time we get to opening night, we’re gonna have a really solid production,” he said. Blevins also is excited about the audience reaction. “I think the audience is going to love the music; they’re going to know what the music is. It’s got some great lines in it and I think they’re just going to laugh,” she said. Performances for “All Shook Up” run through Nov. 11. Tickets are available at Postal Graphics, 831.636.3787, and at brownpapertickets.com. For more information, visit sanbenitostage.org.

id you know that the fastest growing segment of our population is people over the age of 100? The latest census figures show that the United States and Japan have the most people in that age group. Except for Willard Scott’s greetings to centenarians on their birthdays, it used to be rare to hear about these super-senior citizens. Advances in health and nutrition have turned the tide. At Live Oak Adult Day Services, we have had quite a few seniors
over the years who have celebrated their 100th birthday, and beyond. Nora was 100 the day she walked into the center wearing a long velvet evening gown over her pajamas. She made quite an entrance, as you might imagine. She had a fun-loving personality and attributed her long life to laughter. Anne made it to 102 years old. She was born in 1912—the day the Titanic set sail. Anne always added four teaspoons of sugar to her coffee, and asked for salt with every meal, so we decided that her secret to longevity was lots of sugar and salt.
Frannie celebrated her 100th birthday here with a visit from the mayor, a longtime family friend. Her family also attended the celebration, bringing a cake that must have had seven layers. We still talk about that cake. Now, Maxine is about to be 99 years old, and we decided that a party is definitely in order. Why make her wait until she is 100? When reminded that her 99th birthday is approaching, Maxine giggles, “Well, then I had better get a little respect around here!” She is requesting a chocolate cake, but we had a big laugh when I told her we cannot add 99 candles, or the smoke detectors and overhead sprinklers would turn on. Maxine says her plan is to live to be 110 years old, as long as she can continue to indulge in a little alcohol, “just enough to keep up my spirits.” The other seniors here feel they would like to reach the age of 100, or even beyond, as long as they are healthy. That is the one caveat to such a long life. No one wants to be ill or bedridden for a decade or two. What are the challenges families face as their loved ones are more and more likely to reach such advanced ages? Finances can run low. Savings may be depleted paying for health care needs, assisted living and nursing home costs. While not all seniors end up in a nursing home or assisted living center, will there be enough high-quality, affordable facilities available to serve this burgeoning population? There is also the now-common situation of an 80-year old senior caring for a 98 or 100 year old parent. The “child” may not be especially healthy or energetic enough to be a caregiver for such a frail parent. Lots to think about. In the meantime, stock up on the birthday candles and enough alcohol to keep up your spirits. Cheryl Huguenor is the program director at Live Oak Adult Day Services in Gilroy. relationship with Mt. Umunhum, so familiar yet beyond reach. The iconic radar tower is always with us, visible from nearly everywhere in the valley, but for 200 years the 3,486-foot mountaintop has been off limits to us. No longer. Restoration completed, in September the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District opened Mt. Umunhum to the public. Whether you come from San Jose or through New Almaden, Hicks Road eventually meets Mt. Umunhum Road. Hang on tight. It is a steep and winding 5 ½-mile, 2,000-foot climb to the summit. ost beloved landmarks have an air of aesthetic elegance that endears them to us. Most, but not all. The massive radar tower atop Mt. Umunhum that has looked out over the Santa Clara Valley since 1957 gets no style points, but this sterile concrete obelisk is loved nonetheless. When the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District’s initial plans for restoring the mountaintop included removal of the tower, the enormous public outcry turned the tide. The tower would stay. Until recently, Santa Clara Valley residents have had a strange
summit ridge. The views of Santa Cruz and Monterey Bay are stunning. Oddly, the radar tower, so close, remains hidden behind an intervening ridge. Even at the visitor parking area, the mountain’s last looming bulge conceals the radar tower. After a 150-stair step climb, suddenly, there it all is. The tower and the amazing views across the entire bay area compete for your attention. The first signpost on the west summit guided me through the sights below: Santa Cruz, the San Francisco skyline, Silicon Valley, and all three of the high mountains that surround the bay: Mt. Tamalpais, Mt. Diablo and Mt. Hamilton. In perfect conditions, one can see the Sierra Nevada. A short distance farther down the path is a ceremonial circle built by MidPen at the request of the local Ohlone people. Umunhum is the root word for hummingbird in five Ohlone languages. The mountain is sacred to Native Americans and is the site of the creation story for the Amah Mutsun people. Here they can dance and pray close to their creator. Over to the cantilever deck and the East Summit, the views are vast and ever-changing. From every angle, we touched and inspected the radar tower that had always been so far away. It is the last remnant of Almaden Air Force Station that protected us from Cold War threats from 1957 to 1980. Halfway down Mt. Umunhum Road, across from the Bald Mountain parking area, is the trailhead for the Mt. Umunhum Trail, a 3.5-mile multi-use trail that climbs 1,150 feet through chaparral and a cool canopy of trees and to the summit. Wait for one of those crystalline days to visit this unsurpassed perch. Be sure to download MidPen’s free Mt. Umunhum audio tour app before you go for a better understanding of the mountain’s natural and human history.

Seeing Dreams Come True... I started a career in Real Estate so I could help people make their dreams of owning a home come true. Owning your own home is one of everyone’s biggest dreams! And I get enjoyment out of seeing dreams come true. I have been working in Real Estate since 2003, making deals throughout California. I like working with sellers because they are moving on to another adventure in their future of home buying – either upgrading or downsizing. I like working with buyers because I like to see their reactions to the houses we look at. I also like the fulfillment of making their dream of owning a home come true.
