he spirit of giving runs deep in the South Valley, especially during the holiday season and Gilroy-based St. Joseph’s Family Center (SJFC) is grateful for the community’s generosity and participation in their annual Toy Giveaway day, which takes place this year on Dec. 21. More than 750 families who preregistered in October for the event will flock to the center—wish lists in hand—handing them off to volunteers who gather from the thousands of donated toys the perfect gift for the child or children in their family, ages 10 and under. Last year the number of donated toys provided each child with two gifts. ➝ 6

“We usually get donated 3,000 plus toys, there’s a lot of toys that come in,” Vicky Martin, Director of Community Engagement at St. Joseph’s, says. “We’ve heard from several children it’s the only toys they get. So it’s nice that we can give them a couple.” The continuous support of local vendors, and even those outside the community, like St. Anthony’s Church in South San Jose, are key to the toy drive’s success. The same can be said for local resident, Vicky Goicovich. Six years ago when David Cox, Executive Director of SJFC, was notified that the Toys for Tots program would no longer serve the Gilroy area, he immediately reached out for help. Goicovich was his first call. She jumped right in by enlisting the students at St. Mary’s, where her children attended, in a community toy drive. Since 2010 the number of

volunteers, including many of the students who volunteered six years ago, has grown into the hundreds. “Dozens of volunteers coordinated pick-ups, sorting and bagging of toys during the holiday season,” Goicovich says. “Each year a team of volunteers helps organize the giveaway day,” says Goicovich. “Suzanne McCarthy has been a lead volunteer for the past six years and helps coordinate efforts with many local schools. We spend the day ensuring volunteers receive breaks, provide snacks and water, and oversee the students and other volunteers.” Goicovich gives a great deal of credit not only to her volunteers, but also to the Gilroy Fire Department who through the cooperation of the firefighters’ local 2805 began their own toy drive when the Toys for Tots program ended. “One hundred percent of the donations collected through

SPECIAL HELPERS SSt. Joseph’s volunteers gear up for the toy drive each December—this year’s drive is Dec. 21. the local 2805 go directly to St. Joseph’s, so all the toys stay in the city of Gilroy,” Las Animas fire station engineer, Nick Garrett, says, adding that he’s worked closely with Goicovich, whom he considers, “a really nice lady, a very good heart,” over the past six years, and he’s always amazed at the generosity of the community. “The community of Eagle Ridge, they have a party every year, kind of like a pot luck, and that’s a huge donor for us,” says Garrett. “Walgreens on First (Street), they always come through huge. They give bags and bags of toys.” The goal for last year’s drive was 2,000 toys. The day before the giveaway, Goicovich and her merry band of volunteers delivered 2,400 toys to the doorstep of SJFC. This year they’ve upped their goal to 2,500. “The barrels go out right around Thanksgiving and the giveaway is on the 21st, so to get that kind of

response from the community is huge,” says Garrett. “It’s the reason we’re still able to do it. We keep getting bigger every year, so let’s keep it rolling.” Cox believes another advantage of the annual toy giveaway is a growing awareness throughout the community. “I think what’s really nice about our agency is that it does really expose people first-hand to the need that’s out there, because a lot of people in the community are not aware of the need, or to the extent, or the size, or the breadth,” Cox says. “That exposure I think, really is beneficial.” “We love, we love, the support we get from the holidays, it’s overwhelming sometimes,” he says. “But we’d love to channel that enthusiasm, we’d love to channel those resources, we’d love to channel that energy and that awareness so that it is all year long, that’s always our goal.”

The serenity of changing leaves

fter a scorching summer, the milder fall temperatures are a welcome relief. A languid and restful peace infuses autumn days as though, still lingering in our DNA, we feel a remnant urge to seek refuge and bed down for the winter. It's a perfect time to return to the inland trails we set aside during a searing summer. Fall has special charms for us to enjoy. Yes, the hills are brown, the creeks are dry, and the flowers are gone, but the murk is clearing from our sky, and the crowds

have gone home. If you are feeling the itch for an autumn stroll, here are a few of my favorite late season walks close to home. Coast Range trees whisper their autumn hues compared to the color-clamor of the eastern hardwood forests, but our western sycamores, bigleaf maples, white alders, and Fremont cottonwoods can still dazzle. These trees thrive where water flows, and one of my favorite creekside walks is along Hunting Hollow Road in Henry Coe State Park. Even the drive out Gilroy Hot Springs Road that follows Coyote Creek to the park's

Hunting Hollow entrance is well worth a fall visit. This level trail—a rarity in Coe Park—features some magnificent sycamores often dangling wisps of lichen like Christmas tree tinsel. A short walk from the trailhead, look for one sycamore in particular that has found a loophole in the Law of Gravity, somehow holding up a massive trunk reaching so far horizontally that it simply must fall. The paved trail and highway noise along Coyote Creek Parkway are a stark contrast to Hunting Hollow's peace and quiet, but I am always surprised by the nooks and crannies of fall color and creekside beauty one can find there. Most people start from the visitor center at the end of Malaguerra Avenue in the northwest corner of Morgan Hill, but there are several spots off Monterey Road north of Morgan Hill where colorful sycamores show off: the end of Burnett Avenue, Coyote Creek Golf Drive (a half mile north of Palm Avenue), and Metcalf Park (I cross Metcalf Road and walk south toward Coyote Ranch). Bald Peaks separates the headwaters of Llagas Creek and Calero Creek; one headed south to Monterey Bay, the other northbound toward the San Francisco Bay. It is along this rolling ridge that Rancho Cañada del Oro Open Space Preserve and Calero County Park join forces to offer a combination of creekside trails that pop with autumn color and far-reaching ridge top views. Figueroa Trail on the Calero side and the Longwall Canyon Trail on the Rancho Cañada side follow creek beds colored with maples and sycamores. If you are feeling chipper, both trails join others that climb 1,000 feet to the top of Bald Peaks where your reward is a view of the San Francisco skyline and Mt. Tamalpais. For now, resist the urge to bed down for the winter, and embrace the crisp and colorful days of autumn.

s the winter season approaches, signs of its coming are brought in stages: The appearance of autumn foliage. The longer nights. The comings and goings of Thanksgiving decor. The crowds swarming department stores. And just like clock-work—the choir’s heard singing. One of these choirs is San Benito Oriana Chorale, which has been gracing San Benito County with its talents for 32 years. Founded in 1985, the chorale was named after Queen Elizabeth the First, who was a patron of the musical arts. It was originally led

by Jeanna Balda, with the assistance of her friend Nettie Fields. It is now led by Rachel Romina, who has been its musical director since 2014. Prior to being its director, Romina was its piano accompanist six years prior and has experience in assisting choirs and soloists in the bay area. She is also the music director and worship leader at Christ Fellowship Church in Hollister. Oriana’s piano accompanist for the Christmas concerts is Masae Araki, who Romina says the chorale is “blessed to have.” “She is a stunning soloist, as well as sensitive and musical accompanist,” Romina says of Araki.

The 38-member choir has been preparing for its 2017 Christmas concerts for the past three months. The concerts will feature a wide array of genres and musical styles, including two Latin motets from the 1500s, the African-American spiritual “Go, Tell It On the Mountain,” a doo-wop arrangement of “A Holly Jolly Christmas,” and various carols. Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” will also be sung with Oriana alumni singers. Along with the adult choir, the eighteen member Oriana Youth Chorus will also be performing in the Christmas concerts. The youth chorus, ages seven to seventeen, will perform three pieces in the first

They are extremely dedicated, focused and full of energy. Family owned since 1927, the market is now in the hands of Tom and Dan Rocca, the founders’ grandchildren. While Tom takes care of the produce department, Dan specializes in its wine selection. “About 30 years ago, before I knew anything about wine, we had a wine salesman come in and tell me our wine selection was terrible,” explains Dan. “So he took me to Napa for a crash-course in wine-tasting. While there I discovered that I actually had a very good nose and palate for wine.” Now, with a selection of over 500 different wines, Rocca’s was
