ike to cook but hate the planning/shopping? There are at least 100 different companies that offer meal preparation kits which, include recipes and ingredients delivered to your door step. Similar offerings include discounts on first orders, pre-portioned ingredients for two to four meals per week and feeding two to four people. Delivery windows are between 8am and 8pm and insulated packages arrive with ice packs so food stays fresh even if you’re not home when the food is delivered. Step-by-step instructions on recipe cards, some with photos and video instruction, are provided. You will still need to chop, combine and stir foods according to the recipe. Every food item and ingredient is included in the kit except basics like salt, pepper, sugar, oil and eggs. ➝ 6

Many provide foods that are antibiotic free, sustainable, locally sourced and organic. Some offer vegetarian and gluten-free options. You can skip weeks that you don’t want and cancel the subscription at any time. As for the cost, these meal services say that they can offer pricing comparable or less than grocery stores because they cut out the middleman. Bypassing wholesalers, regional grocers and then grocery stores—foods are purchased directly from the farm/ producers and then sent directly to you. According to a CBS Channel 2 news investigation, if the meal costs less than $10, it will probably be cheaper than buying all the ingredients at the grocery store. Prospective buyers could even consider pre ordering special holiday options available by some vendors. Some experts believe that meal kits will boom into a multi-billion industry within the next five years. Today, about 19 percent of people
say they’ve already tried a meal kit service according to Morning Consult, a brand management company. Although research has found that meal kit services are most popular with millennials, men, and wealthier Americans, companies are pushing for a larger market share among young couples, working families and empty-nesters.
Pros Convenience of having a complete meal without having to shop. Gives you the chance to try new recipes and foods. Don’t need to purchase a full size package of an ingredient when only a tablespoon is needed for the recipe. Portion control – the amount of food is generally satisfying for an average adult.

Scouting for food The Scouting for Food chairperson is Julia Stephens, whose son is a first class scout in Troop 455. It is her second year chairing the event, but said last year’s totals were impressive. “Last year the Boy Scouts brought more than 5,000 pounds of food to the food bank,” she said. Lupe Miller, who chaired the event for four years prior to Stephens, saw similar success with the food collection, with amounts consistently between 4,500-5,000 pounds.

Scouts in San Benito County create packages for the needy By JENNY ARBIZU
I
f you hear the pitter-patter of little feet outside your home in the upcoming days, rest assured—it’s probably not Santa’s elves outside your front door. The Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts of San Benito county are Scouting for Food, an annual food drive the local scouts have been doing in coordination with the Community Food Bank of San Benito County for decades. And they are looking for support of the community to join in their efforts. Flyers were distributed over Thanksgiving weekend to homes in the Hollister and San Juan Bautista by the San Benito District Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts. The Girl Scouts of
Central Coast Council Service, Unit 250, also partake in the food drive. As mentioned on the flyers, scouts will return to these homes to collect items on the morning of Saturday, Dec. 2. Scouts are asking for such canned goods as tuna, chicken, fruit, vegetables, soups, chili, spaghetti or ravioli. Other items such as peanut butter, cereal, Pop Tarts, pancake or muffin mixes, crackers, cookies, instant soup, dried rice or beans, pasta, powdered juice, powdered milk, dried fruits or snack bars are welcome. The scouts will accept any other nonperishable food items, except for frozen foods, open containers or glass containers (in case of breakage).
“I think it’s just such a worthwhile event, especially for the younger scouts,” Miller said. “Just the whole idea of service and giving back to the community. It’s the activity they see as being a lot of fun, but I hope that they start seeing—especially as they get older—what that means and what they’re doing in terms of making a difference for our community.” The Community Food Bank of San Benito County is located at 1133 San Felipe Drive and is open Tuesday through Friday, 8am-4pm. Call 831.637.0340 for information, or visit www. communityfoodbankofsbc.org.

Registration for Gilroy’s Tierra Bella opens on Dec. 15, so I wish you’d give this spring favorite a try. It’s sponsored by the Almaden Cycle Touring Club, so you know it’ll be GREAT!
3. I wish you’d give someone a bicycle this year. Eschew the electronics and sedentary stuff (except for books) and give the gift that truly does keep on giving. Oh, and if it’s a replacement bike, donate the old steed to charity. 4. You KNOW you’ve been wanting to try this Yuletide institution ever since I began writing about it. Critical Christmas returns to Monterey’s Custom House Plaza on the 17th at 6pm, so I wish you would finally give it a try. REAL ESTATE
Realtor’s Corner important if you don’t have personal customer service. My clients talk to me, not one of my staff members. I don’t know about you, but I can’t stand when it takes 15 minutes of automated prompts to get a live person. Every client’s needs are different. Whether working with a buyer or a seller—working together we can find the best action plan that is going to work for that particular client. After 23 years in the business, it seems to be working so far.
What’s the best part of your job? I really do like helping buyers and sellers reach their goals—helping them get to the next chapter of their lives. It makes me happy when we stay in touch and they let me know what’s happening in their lives. It’s just a good feeling.
What do you tell clients about the expected tax plan? Courtesy Chris Williams

How did you get your start in real estate? The truth—my best friend, who was, and still is a Realtor as well, pulled up to my home in a brand new Pontiac Fiero, that looked like a miniature Ferrari! I told myself “I have to get my real estate license so I can get one of those!” This was around 1993. I never got a Fiero, But I did get my license in 1994 and never looked back. I found I really enjoyed real estate sales. From signing a listing agreement with my clients to closing escrow on their home—I enjoy helping people reach their goals.
How do you stay competitive in this market? I stay competitive by knowing my clients need two things. #1 Using the most advanced, relevant, successful marketing tools available and #2 One on one customer service. Part of my marketing plan has actually grown into a little business called CaHomeDrone—a service providing incredible aerial videos as well as pictures of the interior and exterior of their home. I create beautiful virtual tours buyers and buyers’ agents can view from all over the world. None of this is

I think it’s too early to tell how this will affect buyers and sellers at this time. I haven’t had a client ask me about it yet, But I’m sure I will soon. Capping the property tax deduction, limiting the mortgage interest deduction to interest paid up to $500,000, etc. Will that have an affect on property values? It could. Will it increase our low inventory? It could. It’s still too early to tell. We can help guide clients to help educate them as information comes in, but we can not give tax or legal advice. I always refer my clients to their tax professional and/or attorney that they trust. If they don’t have one, I can happily refer them to one.
