landmark structure built more than 150 years ago stands at the corner of Monterey Street and Peebles Avenue in Morgan Hill. The business inside that structure is also a landmark—having served the community for more than six decades. Ponzini Community Garage and Towing is owned by Gary Ponzini, 72, and was selected by the Morgan Hill Chamber of Commerce as the Small Business of the Year. On March 3, Ponzini will be honored at the 60th annual, “Celebrate Morgan Hill” dinner at Britton Middle School gym. “I thought that’s a pretty good achievement,” says Gary, adding, “I just don’t like getting dressed up. I thought about showing up in my coveralls.” ➝ 6

SERVICE ORIENTED Gary was a 2017 Community Foundation Philanthropy
Honoree for his work with the Edward Boss Prado Foundation.
In 1951 Ponzini’s grandfather purchased the garage and service station located at 19190 Monterey Street. Soon after, Gary, his father Fred, mother Lucile, and his sister, Janis, relocated from San Jose to open and operate the family business. “My dad worked the garage and my mom pumped the gas,” says Gary. “I was probably six years old, I’d sweep and clean the restrooms, stuff like that. We did it all through high school and college.” Two years after graduating from Gavilan college Ponzini left the garage in pursuit of his passion, car racing. “I just packed up and left,” he says. “For about 19 years I just went all over the Midwest. I went back to drive race cars. That’s all I ever wanted to do. I believe I have 13 national wins.” In almost two decades of racing Ponzini was involved in only two major accidents, the second, and his last, took place in Winchester, Indiana—which caused him to lose use of his left arm.
“When I took the cast off, the left arm didn’t work,” says Gary. “It just didn’t work. So, my buddies drove back and moved me back.” Gary’s passion for the world of racing overruled the risk. “We didn’t have cages and we didn’t have all those protection devices,” he says. “You knew bad things were going to happen in those days.” Despite his injury, Gary returned to his father’s garage, and he never left. “I’d drive the tow truck, and pump the gas, and work on the cars with one arm,” Gary says. “And one day it started moving.” Fred eventually handed over management of the garage to his son, while continuing to maintain a constant presence in the family business. “He’d come in every day just to harass us—every day, like clockwork,” Gary says. “Memories of my dad are the best. Three young women take the stage in SVCT’s ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’ By SUSAN L. RIFE
C
ommunity theaters, and theatrical troupes of all stripes, pride themselves on creating strong, family-like bonds among cast and crew and especially on developing new generations of talent. South Valley Civic Theatre, which presents a children’s show, a teen show and at least one show each season with multiple roles for young people, even includes it as part of its mission statement: “We believe that involvement in community theater is an important means for youth to develop confidence and skills and for adults to support the youth of our community.” That commitment may be more apparent in the theater company’s
next show, Thoroughly Modern Millie, opening Feb. 23. Three key female roles in the show are played by Live Oak High School seniors who literally grew up in the theater. Brianna Pember, Katie Bell and Becca Reynolds make up a triumvirate of homegrown talent on the Thoroughly Modern Millie set. All three are seniors at Live Oak, and all are 17 years old. They’ve been on stage, together and apart, for many years. “Millie,” the story of a young woman from Kansas who heads to New York City in 1922 with plans to marry for money, not for love, will be their last community theater show together, a fact that reduces them to speechlessness and tearful giggles. Reynolds, who plays Gloria in the
musical, has been on the SVCT stage since she was not quite 5 years old and her mother, Joy, was playing Rooster’s girlfriend in a production of Annie, that show that has hooked many a young girl into musical theater. “I’ve been surrounded by theater my whole life,” she said. Brianna Pember, who will play the part of Millie Dillmount, arrived on the stage in fourth grade, as Fairgoer No. 3 in a production of Charlotte’s Web. When she began taking singing lessons, she discovered that she had the ability to make people feel emotions deeply through her voice (“and face,” chimed in Bell). She was hooked for good when she played Fiona in “Shrek! The Musical,” her first starring role. “I felt like people believed in me and my passion was validated,” she said. Bell, playing Miss Flannery in Thoroughly Modern Millie, is the relative latecomer to the local theater scene, lured in by her older brother, who had played Gaston in Beauty and the Beast. She joined Pember in Shrek and last fall was Mrs. Webb in Our Town. “It was overwhelming, how accepting everyone is,” said Bell, who was bullied as a younger child. “When you come here, you get more confidence. You learn to listen to yourself.” The impending end of high school for the three is one reason Cummings is directing the show. “Becca is just a couple years younger than my younger son,” she said. “Becca and Nathan have done shows since a very young age. Brianna, I’ve watched her from third grade on up, and watched her blossom and continue to improve her craft.” The combination of the graduating girls and the show itself made directing it an easy “yes” for Cummings and a must see for audiences. South Valley Civic Theatre presents ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie.’ Performances run Feb. 23-March 17 at Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, 17090 Monterey Road, Morgan Hill. For tickets, call 408.842.7469 or visit svct.org.

REPURPOSED PLANTS Pureed sphagnum moss can be painted on surfaces to create authentic, living works of art.
New ways to play with garden moss By NANCY SCHRAMM
M
of moss as the stuff that makes cement and brick walkways slippery. Have you ever heard of moss graffiti? This is an environmentally friendly method of making your mark on a shady wall or surface. I’ve known for a long time that it’s possible to make moss paint by mixing moss and buttermilk or yogurt, plus some water, maybe a little sugar and placing those three or four ingredients in a blender. You should clean as much soil and rocks from the moss roots as possible, but even then I don’t recommend using your family’s best blender for this operation. This mixture can then be painted on rocks, pots or any item in a shady garden that you want to appear

oss, that green stuff that grows in damp shady places, is really quite an interesting plant. Yes, it truly is a plant, or more correctly, they are plants since there are many different genera of moss. I’m not going to even pretend to know much scientific about moss. I can recognize Sphagnum moss as a traditional packing material for shipping plants, but beyond that I only know that different types of moss look light or dark, ferny, brushy or even velvety. These days, however, the world of moss is growing in fascinating directions. The gardening community has evolved beyond just thinking
old or have softer edges. But just a few years ago I saw this technique used in an even more creative manner. Moss puree was painted on a brick wall and kept moist until the moss grew fresh and green, revealing a thought-provoking phrase. The internet has many examples of words or phrases, as well as patterns or pictures created by painting with pureed moss. Kokedama, which translates as “moss ball” is another current mossy trend. Practiced for centuries in Japan as a form of bonsai, kokedama hit the internet and has exploded around the world in new, artsy ways. Moss balls are typically small plants with moss wrapped around the roots instead of a formed container, and either displayed on a flat slab or hung by a string from the ceiling. Of course there is more to it than that. Usually a special soil mixture made from akadama, a clay-based bonsai soil, added to peat moss is formed in a ball around the roots of your subject plant. Then sheet moss is wrapped around the formed ball of soil and roots and tied with twine, fishing line or fine, colored wire depending on your desired effect. Finish by hanging your moss ball from the ceiling. All types of plants have been used; ferns, ivy, tropicals, herbs, succulents and even woody plants can be successful. Think about it, this might be a way to introduce a living plant into your home where otherwise you might not have room for one. If growing moss piques your interest, I recommend Moss Gardening: Including Lichens, Liverworts and Other Miniatures by George Schenk (Timber Press, 1997). CELLAR DOORS Calerrain will hold the grand opening of its tasting room at Gilroy’s Stomping Ground, Feb. 24.
Tasting room Calerrain shares its wines in Gilroy By LAURA NESS
I
nspired by a growing love of California’s many wine regions they wanted to share with others, Geoff and Chantal Mace created Calerrain, a combination of “California” and “terrain.” They source grapes from the Santa Clara Valley, Santa Lucia Highlands and San Benito, hoping to add the Santa Cruz Mountains to their playlist. Says Geoff, “My vision is to have a club shipment with chardonnays or cabernets from three distinct regions and give people the opportunity to taste the differences.” The 600-case winery plans to double production in 2018, and currently offers three wines for tasting, $10: 2017 Rosé of Grenache ($24, Monterey), 2016 Chardonnay Highlands Ranch ($35, Santa Lucia Highlands) and a 2016
Cabernet, Church Creek Vineyards ($44, Santa Clara Valley). Visitors can opt for the $15 tasting, which adds two barrel tastes to the standard three. Of the barrel-fermented Grenache, picked specifically for rosé, rather than a saignée, Geoff says, “Barrel-fermenting adds such a nice texture.” The Cabernet is also 100 percent barrel-fermented for a rich, silky mouthfeel. “I know from my time making wine at Constellation and Treasury, that you can release wines with just 12 to 15 months of cellaring. This cab will continue to evolve, but it’s beautiful now.” Calerrain, located at The Stomping Ground, 6500 Brem Lane in Gilroy, will be open every weekend, noon to 5pm.

In 2017, Gary was selected as a Community Foundation Philanthropy Honoree for his work with the foundation. The pairing of these two philanthropic minded individuals began 20 years ago with a job interview. “I was just looking for a job,” Cecelia says. “I just applied and there’s this nice little man with these big glasses on. The interview went well, and I started working for him. He was nice and his father was nice.” Cecelia and Gary reminisce that soon after she started, Fred declared her the boss of the garage. “His dad told me, ‘OK you’re the boss,” Cecelia says. “You’re the Queen Bee, and the name stuck.” Five years after joining the garage Cecelia and Gary were married. “It worked out well—we balance,” Cecelia says. “I’m very different than he is, he’s very serious and he’s real tight with money, and I’m not. Somehow, we balance out.” Ponzini’s customers can be assured the garage will continue to be a staple in Morgan Hill. Gary has no intention of retiring. “In our industry, we have no retirement, so you just keep working.”

money to fix your car, he’d fix your car. Everybody loved my dad.” Tony Salinas, the current manager of the garage, started working for Fred and Gary 25 years ago and has never regretted his decision to join the family business. “It’s great to see both of them, (Fred and Gary), run it the way they did, and it’s been an honor for me to run it with them,” says Salinas. “So, all these years only three people have run that garage. My father, me, and Tony Salinas,” Gary says. “Just us three in all those years. A small business deals with the person, we’ve always treated people like we want to be treated. It is the golden rule.” Gary applies the golden rule in all aspects of his life. He and his wife, Cecelia, established the Edward Boss Prado Foundation in 2013, in dedication to Cecelia’s son Edward. The foundation honors the values of generosity, sensitivity, and good neighbors. The couple themselves epitomize what it means to be good neighbors—giving back to the community through the foundation and numerous annual charitable events.

Seeing Dreams Come True... I started a career in Real Estate so I could help people make their dreams of owning a home come true. Owning your own home is one of everyone’s biggest dreams! And I get enjoyment out of seeing dreams come true. I have been working in Real Estate since 2003, making deals throughout California. I like working with sellers because they are moving on to another adventure in their future of home buying – either upgrading or downͲsizing. I like working with buyers because I like to see their reactions to the houses we look at. I also like the fulfillment of making their dream of owning a home come true. The most important thing I do for my clients is making myself available at all times – 7 days a week – morning, afternoon and evening.
