Shattered history Movie art designer Armand Baltazar publishes what could be the next great sci-fi/fantasy franchise BY WALLACE BAINE ILLUSTRATIONS BY ARMAND BALTAZAR
I
MARCH 30, 2018
t’s a story that was originally intended for an audience of one. And, if all goes according to plan, it could evolve into a story for millions.
4
Armand Baltazar began the book project now known as “Timeless: Diego and the Rangers of the Vastlantic” (Harper Collins) as a kind of answer to a challenge from his 11-year-old son Diego. But Baltazar was not your everyday suburban dad just trying to entertain his kid. As a visual artist in the movie industry, he had put together a résumé that included stints with DreamWorks, Disney and Pixar. In part, because of those connections, Baltazar now has a deal in place
with star producer/director Ridley Scott that could turn his book into a multiplex blockbuster. In the middle of that unlikely timeline from idea to blockbuster, of course, is the book itself, the release of which Baltazar will celebrate with a visit to BookSmart in Morgan Hill on April 10. “Timeless” is a big-ticket item in the publishing industry. On one level, it’s an elaborate fantasy novel aimed at middle-school readers. But this one is different from scads of similar titles, thanks mainly to about 150 meticulous illustrations that tips the book’s total page count to well north of 600 pages. “I can hold up a photo of myself from when (I started this project),” said Baltazar, 51, who took on the dual role as the novel’s writer and illustrator. “All my
hair is jet black and there’s lots of it. Now, my hair is quite a bit thinner, and my beard is definitely salt-and-pepper. It’s been an odyssey, but a wonderful one.” The book’s secret sauce is a fresh take on the old sci-fi trope of time travel. Where most timetravel narratives feature a character traveling in a linear fashion through time to some point in the past or the future, “Timeless” shatters such neat storylines with a tale featuring characters from many historical eras interacting in the present. Part of the book’s central mystery is exactly how the time-space continuum got fractured and what to do to get it back to normal. The whole “Timeless” saga— the author envisions at least three books in the franchise and possibly just as many ➝ 6

Karen Seeker has jumped all-in to her career in the wine business By LAURA NESS
M
eet Karen Seeker, President, Wineries of Santa Clara Valley. San Martin resident, winegrower and consultant, Karen Seeker, was born and raised in Benton, Illinois, next door to her grandparents. “We had horses, race horses, cows, brahma bulls, even buffalo at one point,” says Seeker. “It was very country and my world centered around family.” No wonder she relishes the rural vibe of South Valley. During college in South Carolina, she pursued a career in theater, which took her to Hollywood. She and some friends established a theater on Sunset Blvd, but it
wasn’t easy. “I made extra money by playing professional billiards, mostly in Las Vegas. I had played collegiate and made it to nationals three years in a row, so it was an easy side job for me,” Seeker recalls. With encouragement from a college advisor, she pursued corporate training, earned her Master of Science in Instructional Systems Design, did an internship at Bell Laboratories in New Jersey, and started her own consulting practice. After she met her husband, Randy, (PhD in Nuclear and Chemical Engineering), she moved to San Clemente. A startup position brought them to Northern California in 2009, and they purchased their San
Martin property, which was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, in 2011. The couple knew they eventually wanted to transition from corporate life to their dream of having a winery. Seeker pretty much wrapped up her consulting two years ago to focus on the wine business. Now the entire family is involved: Randy is the winemaker and manages the vineyard. Their youngest, Taylor, manages the tasting room and inventory. Misha is a teacher at Huntington Beach High School in Southern California and helps out when she visits. Karen handles the finances, marketing and special events, which she says is the most fun part for her. She shares one of the funnier moments that occurred during a co-ed baby shower. “There was a circle of young men—some big guys— with balloons under their shirts drinking wine from tiny baby bottles in a contest. It was quite a sight!” To make between 550 to 750 cases per year, the boutique winery purchase grapes from local growers and from far away sources like Lake County and the Santa Lucia Highlands, adding chardonnay, syrah, merlot, sauvignon blanc and several rosés to their lineup. Seeker was recruited to the Wineries of Santa Clara Valley Board in November, 2016, becoming President the following January. She is currently serving her second term. She’s excited about the challenge. “We are the oldest wine-growing region in the US and still have a long way to go,” says Seeker, “We came together this past year to create our new branding—Our Dreams, Your Wines, Rooted in Silicon Valley. We gained 8 new winery members, taking us to 32 wineries, and we have a targeted marketing strategy to reach our neighbors from Salinas to San Francisco. The diversity among our wines and winery experiences provides something for everyone. I am so proud to be part of this organization.”

Visiting Black Diamond Mines Regional Park
12
By RON ERSKINE
T
he East Bay Regional Parks District boasts 121,397 acres of land preserved in 73 parks, and I have visited no more than a handful of them. In an effort to trim this ignorance, I recently reached out to two East Bay friends. Margaret Campos and Beth Ludwig, two hiking buddies from Walnut Creek, know the territory. I called them with a simple request: Please take me on a hike to your favorite EBRPD preserve. I had heard of it and seen it on the map, but beyond that, I knew nothing about Margaret’s
and Beth’s choice: Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve. Heeding their warning that weekends were busy at the preserve, I was waiting in line at the gate on Somersville Road in Antioch when it opened at 8am. We set out from the parking lot at the end of the road that is only a matter of steps from the Somersville Townsite, one of the five coal mining towns that thrived from 1850 to 1905 when miners extracted four million tons of low grade coal from the Mount Diablo Coalfield. While the coal was an inferior quality, the mines were close to San Francisco where ships,
railroads, and industry hungered for fuel. When Mount Diablo coal was eventually replaced by higher quality coal and petroleum products, sandstone mining flourished for awhile. Now, the hills belong to the cattle and sheep. We followed the Nortonville Trail up to the Rose Hill Cemetery perched on the bare grass slope and clearly visible from below. Few things stir the imagination like an old cemetery. Dating from 1865, scores of people are buried in Rose Hill, but many plots remain unmarked, remnants of vandalism that occurred prior to 1973 when EBRPD acquired the property. Across a little divide above the cemetery, we dropped down to the Nortonville Townsite. Except for some mine tailings and several information placards, one would hardly imagine that Nortonville was ever there, much less a once-bustling community of 1,000 persons. Over the next two miles, we rose steadily above the bare grassy slopes into a thicket of manzanita and blue oaks, and finally into a lovely forest of Coulter pines, a species at the very northern boundary of its habitat. Over there, lovely views of Mt. Tamalpais. To the north, a wide view of the Delta. A bit farther right, a great view across the Central Valley. With clearer air, we certainly would have seen the Sierra. After the long descent back to the Somersville Townsite, we walked up to the Greathouse Visitor Center, which is in and underground chamber at the end of a tunnel cut by miners in the 1920s. Alas, that visitor center does not open until March. We came to walk the trails and enjoy the countryside, but much of the bustle at Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve centers around the mining history and attractions near the Somersville Townsite. There is plenty left to do on a second visit.

It’s all about...

ARTIST Baltazar’s work includes

Location: CHRIST FELLOWSHIP 2066 SAN BENITO ST
“When I was growing up, there was no internet,” he said. “Mobile phones were, like, those giant phones you would see in war movies. I grew up with Pong and PacMan and Space Invaders. It’s nothing like we have now.” That also means he grew up with comic books, and it’s part of the cultural duty of his generation, as he sees it, to pass along a love of books to the generation known as “digital natives.” “We live in such a complex world, pluralized with people’s tastes and experiences. And for a lot of kids, they are just bombarded with all these technological treasures.” Baltazar said he would love nothing better than to re-create the sense of enchantment common in era of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne. And the best way to do that is through books. “In all my time at Pixar and Disney and DreamWorks, it had all been in helping other visionary storytellers. In creating this book, I get to be the writer and director I always wanted to work for.”
Armand Baltazar, author of ‘Timeless: Diego and the Rangers of the Vastlantic’ Tuesday, April 10, 4pm BookSmart, 1295 E. Dunne Ave, Morgan Hill Mybooksmart.indielite.org

and ultimately save the world by restoring chronological time. In this story, time is obviously a stand-in for geography in our world, in which everyone is judged by where they’re from. Baltazar grew up in Chicago, the only Filipino kid in his school. And his own son came of age in California where he went to school among kids from a wide variety of backgrounds. The family now lives in the East Bay town of Pleasanton. The parallels between cultural dislocation and time travel have long fascinated Baltazar. “A good friend of mine,” he said, “he grew up in China but came to the United States when he was about 12 or 13. As a kid, he had seen exactly four movies in his entire life, all Charlie Chaplin movies. So then he comes to the U.S., in 1978, and the first thing he sees is ‘Star Wars.’ That right there is cultural time travel. I mean, you think you have an understanding of the world, that it operates in just one way, then suddenly, in the matter of a plane ride from one place to another, everything is upside down.” That dimension, the resonance with the contemporary world, is what Baltazar hopes gives his story a power that connects with kids today. “It’s a simple adventure,” he said. “It was never intended to be something political. But considering the world we live in now, it’s the best way to tell a story, to tap kids on the shoulder and say, this is your world now.” “Timeless” has been years in the making, but Baltazar’s work in such films as “Inside Out,” “The Prince of Egypt” and “Brave” got him the attention of publishers and film producers right away. (He predicted that the film version of his book might be in theaters some time in 2019). Baltazar is often called an “animator,” but he said that’s inaccurate. “I wasn’t an animator. I wasn’t the person who created the performances, which is what an animator does. I was one of the people who would design the worlds that the characters would move through, designing the lighting and the mood, much like a cinematographer (in a live-action film).” Baltazar and his son exist on opposite sides of at least one fundamental divide in time: the digital revolution. Baltazar is part of one of the last pre-internet generations.

HOME & GARDEN
Fuzzy, but not friends infestations can become a problem. As sapsuckers, citrus mealybugs pierce fruit, leaves, and young stems, to get at the sap. They also feed on tender, new growth. As they feed, mealybugs leave behind a trail of honeydew that attracts ants, and creates the perfect growth medium for sooty mold. Citrus mealybug feeding near fruit stems also leads to fruit drop. This feeding also reduces fruit quality. Trees fail to thrive and are prone to infestation by disease and other pests. In addition to oranges, lemons, limes, and grapefruit, citrus mealybugs also have a taste for ornamental plants, such as tulips, coleus, cyclamen, begonias, and dahlias.

If you have citrus trees, you likely have citrus mealybugs
ousin to scale insects, these tiny local pests are often overlooked. At first, you may see some sooty mold on a few leaves, an ant trail, or, finally, a telltale cluster of fuzzy white, tucked under leaves or in crevices. Left unchecked, mealybugs can scar fruit and cause chlorosis, early leaf and fruit drop, and poor tree health.
By KATE RUSSELL
Citrus mealybug All mealybugs are soft, flat, ovalshaped critters with segmented bodies. The mealybugs that attack Morgan Hill citrus are covered with a white wax that also creates spines (filaments) around the outer edge and the back end. Unless you use
a hand lens, you probably won’t notice individuals, but mealybugs colonize areas, creating white, fuzzy egg clusters that are easy to spot. When mealybug eggs hatch, the crawlers are pale yellow, with red eyes, and distinct antennae. Crawlers are not born with their protective wax coating. They begin to excrete it soon after hatching. They are called crawlers because they crawl to a feeding site, where they will continue to develop (and damage fruit) for a month or two.
Citrus mealybug damage Each female mealybug can lay hundreds of eggs, and there are usually two or three generations a year, so
The first step to controlling citrus mealybugs is to monitor your trees, especially in spring and fall, for signs of ant trails, sooty mold, and egg clusters. Since ants will protect and farm the aphids for their honeydew, apply sticky barriers to tree trunks to block ants from protecting the aphids against natural predators. Those natural predators are your trees’ best defense against citrus mealybugs. Ladybugs, lacewings, and hoverflies will devour these pests, so avoid using broad-spectrum pesticides. For extreme infestations, you can buy an introduced predator, called the mealybug destroyer (Cryptolaemus montrouzieri). Insecticides are not recommended. Diatomaceous earth and insecticidal soaps can also be used. Mealybugs prefer dusty conditions, so hosing trees off can make them less appealing to citrus mealybugs. Be sure to stop by the Spring Garden Market on April 14, 9 a.m. – 2 p.m., at Martial Cottle Park for all of your spring planting needs! Kate Russell is a UCCE Master Gardener in Santa Clara county.
