Groomed forgrooming Canine Concepts owner Jamie Ha’s life with dogs BY DEBRA ESKINAZI PHOTOGRAPHS BY ROBERT ELIASON
E
ven as a kid, everyone knew Jamie Ha would grow up to be a pet groomer. When she bought Canine Concepts at East Dunne and Monterey Street in Morgan Hill in 2015, Ha had nearly 20 years of grooming experience under her belt. And that didn’t even include her early work with pets when she was just a child—Ha says she used to bathe and fluff-dry her grandmother’s little toy poodle. “And she’ll tell you, she knew I was going to be a groomer when I was young,” Ha says. With a staff of six and a breadth of four decades of experience between them, Ha and her team offer full-service grooming to pets big and small. From tiny chihuahuas and small yorkies to Great Pyrenees and
Newfoundlands, Canine Concepts doesn’t discriminate—they also groom mastiffs, pit bulls and the occasional feline. “We do do cats, I have a groomer who does the kitty haircuts,” says Ha. Pets can come in for a basic treatment or they can get the works. “We do anything from nail trimming to full service grooming,” she says. “We do the a la carte services, just nails, feet trimming, feet brushing.” At Canine Concepts, your pet can even get styled in the colors of your favorite team especially for game day. “We do dye dogs—we have a special hair color that’s used—a pet safe hair color,” Ha says. She says they can mix any color to make nearly any design. “We’ve done panda bears, we’ve done mohawks, we’ve done jerseys for the San Jose Sharks,” she says.
“We’ve done Sully from Monsters Inc., Oscar the Grouch, Cookie Monster. Most people just do tails and ears and maybe little boots.” Ha says the most used colors are pinks and purples and the blue teal for the Sharks fans. At $30 for a basic grooming, dogs get their ears, nails and glands taken care of. Top that out to $65 and they’ll throw in a nice haircut for your pooch. “All shampoos are natural and organic and I also offer a variety of veterinary-grade medicated shampoos,” Ha says. Other tools of the trade Ha and her staff employ to get pets looking their best include scissors, stripping knives, clippers, dematting tools, rubber brushes, slicker brushes, nail trimmers, the high velocity dryers and specially designed tables. But what if your dog is ➝ 6 APRIL 27, 2018

aggressive, timid or simply isn’t into the experience? “We don’t discriminate against any breed—we’ll taken them all,” she says. “We have special training with the handling of aggressive and elderly animals.” The room where the grooming occurs is large, so there’s plenty of room for a variety of breeds and personalities. “If the dogs are very mild-mannered, they don't’ try to escape and they are not aggressive. We’ll allow them to not be kept in the kennel—they can stay in the salon,” she says. “It helps nervous dogs. Once they see there are other dogs acting
normal and having a good time, it calms them down a lot. So we try to do as much outside of the kennel as we possibly can.” While Ha says she has the most fun with her staff, she calls one her craziest stories, rehabilitating a stray, filthy, scruffy puppy, a terrier mix with cuts, ticks and matted hair. “Houdini was a stray dog in our town and we ultimately caught him and rehabilitated him at the salon— put him through rescue and helped him find his forever home,” Ha says. Even with the busyness of operating her own business, Ha loves working with dogs.

T
enderly, The Rosemary Clooney Musical, opening April 27 at Limelight Actors Theater, is more than simply a jukebox musical with an actress running through the Clooney songbook. Instead, the musical, written by Janet Yates Vogt and Mark Friedman, takes a deeper look at the life of the legendary cabaret singer and actress. “It’s not all about the bright stuff. It dives into her life, her breakdown and her eventual turnaround to come back on top,” said Kevin Heath, Limelight co-founder and producer. “It’s a real story with dark moments.” Clooney was born into poverty in Kentucky in 1928. By the time of her
death in 2002, her career had run parallel to that of other pop crooners from the middle of the 20th century, but was clouded by her mother’s abandonment of her at an early age, the disappearance of her father when she was a teenager, a rocky marriage to Jose Ferrer, the assassination of close friend Robert F. Kennedy, a nervous breakdown and drug addiction. The Limelight production will be star Diane Milo as Clooney and Michael Hirsch as her psychiatrist (and a host of other roles). Songs come into the plot as Clooney revisits key memories of her life. Heath said Limelight’s creative team saw an earlier version of Tenderly after Limelight had done
“Always...Patsy Cline” (which also starred Milo). “We learned so much about Rosemary that we started researching her life,” said Heath. “She worked with famous icons like Bing Crosby, Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra, but her personal life was almost more famous.” Clooney was standing just yards away from Bobby Kennedy when he was shot. After a public breakdown and years of therapy, she made a comeback when Crosby invited her to join him for a 50th anniversary concert. Tenderly covers her life from the late ’50s to the ’80s, providing some challenges to the Limelight crew. “One of the biggest issues is keeping true to the period with costumes and set pieces,” said Heath. “Fortunately, our musical director, Michael Johnson, is also our costumer. He will create several original pieces for the show, as he did with the Patsy show. We are also having custom wigs made to fit each period. The set pieces are minimal, and all Mid Century, one of my favorite styles.” Heath has put a three-piece live band—piano, drums and bass guitar—right on the stage to make the performance scenes more real. “At first, I was nervous about having a drummer, to be honest. But after hearing the music, I realized the music of the period used very soft brushes on the drums, versus a hardcore pounding,” said Heath. Milo has done extensive theater work in the Bay Area, after getting her start in Pittsburgh, Penn. in the 1970s. She directed Limelight’s 2018 Cabaret Series and will direct the next show, The Last 5 Years before retiring from her day job and returning to Pennsylvania. She also directed her co-star Hirsch in The Bridges of Madison County. “Both are exceptional performers and dancers with incredible voices,” said Heath. ‘Tenderly, The Rosemary Clooney Musical.’ Limelight Actors Theater, April 27-May 19. South Valley interfaith community talks about Buddhism By DEBRA ESKINAZI
F
or nearly one-tenth of the world’s population, Buddhist practice is where adherents go to find their center. Buddhism is prized the world over for its peaceful philosophy and mindfulness practice geared toward ridding oneself of suffering. But this way of life or path isn’t just for Buddhists—it’s available to adherents of other religions too.
That’s part of the mission at the Dhammakaya Meditation
Center Silicon Valley where abbot Piyawajago Bhikkhu and his staff teach and practice Buddhist meditation in the Theraveda philosophy and where, on April 29 the Dhammakaya Meditation Center will open its doors to a Q&A as part of its first collaborative effort with the Interfaith Community of South County (ICSC). This event is part of the ICSC’s “Faith of our Neighbors” series, in which various religious entities
invite the community to come and learn about faiths different from their own. Center coordinator Rose Wimonrat Well says she believes people will be surprised to learn Buddhism is very simple and easy. “What we teach is the practical Buddhism,” says Wimonrat. “They don’t have to be Buddhist to learn these principals. They can use it in their daily lives no matter who they are.” Wimonrat says the meditation techniques taught at the center are known as the Middle Way—a tradition that originated in Thailand. She says the techniques are accessible to all regardless of faith, age, or gender and attendees will be invited to learn these techniques on April 29. “There are a lot of benefits to practicing this type of meditation,” says Wimonrat. “For example stress management—it can increase clarity or self awareness. You’re able to be more in the present moment and therefore you are able to enjoy the happiness of being in the present moment.” Wimonrat said the center offers its classes free of charge, including an Introduction to Middle Way Meditation, Journey to Inner Peace, a seven-week life enrichment program and a mobile meditation. “Mobile meditation is a session where people invite our teaching monk to their office, their house, their apartment to learn about mediation,” Wimonrat says. “The topic can be customized to their interests. And right now the most popular request is for work life balance.” ‘Faith of Our Neighbors: Buddhism and The Art of Meditation’ Sunday, April 29, 2018, 4-6pm, Dhammakaya Meditation Center Silicon Valley, 280 Llagas Road in Morgan Hill. Wine Auction Two decades of community history By LAURA NESS
P
amala Meador, President of the Morgan Hill Community Foundation, says the South Valley Wine Auction this year will benefit many charitable organizations in the community for the first time in its 20-year history. The Foundation is partnering with the Wineries of Santa Clara Valley, great local restaurants and 15 other charities to bring new energy to this annual evening of fun, food, frivolity and philanthropy. The buzz is in the air, with half the VIP tickets for the May 11 event already sold. “We are thrilled to be able to host an event that really represents the philanthropic spirit of South County in a very demonstrative way,” says Meador. “We will be pairing the Charities and the Wineries
together in a way that highlights the Charity. We want this event to bring donors into direct contact with the people that their money serves so that we can create a more lasting and meaningful connection. As we raise our wine glasses, we are also raising our awareness of causes in our community and giving a clearer pathway to contribute.” Working with a professional auctioneer and event planner instrumental in growing the Sonoma Valley Wine Auction to a multi-million dollar fundraising affair, Meador eventually hopes to make the SVWA one of the premier wine auctions in the state. all breeds and pet personalities.
These added touches bring all the comforts of home to the salon. “One of my favorite memories is when I was pregnant,” says groomer Kira Burns. “There were two dogs I groom, Tater Tot and Malibu, that would follow me everywhere I went. Malibu would press her nose against my belly. It truly was an amazing feeling.” An experienced dog and cat groomer, Burns met Ha after leaving Petco to work at Le Pooch Dog Grooming and Dog Boutique in Morgan Hill. Burns followed Ha over to Canine Concepts. Now with seven years of professional experience, Burns says she loves working at Canine Concepts because of the staff and the clients. “I love working with [Ha] and she has taught me so much as a groomer,” Burns boasts. “We have some of the best dogs and the owners always make you feel so good about the work you do,” says Burns.

“Nothing beats working with animals,” she says. “It can be a little bit stressful from time to time. Nothing beats their personality— nothing beats working with dogs.” Ha says it’s not just the dogs that enjoy the experience, but the humans too. She has clients that come weekly, biweekly and monthly, but most are on a six- to eight-week schedule. One customer, Shelly Canario, has been taking her pets to Canine Concepts for six years, regularly bringing three furry visitors into the shop. Canario was also able to reach out to Canine Concepts during a particularly difficult time. “I had three dogs, 2 shih tzu’s and a chihuahua,” Shelly says. “I recently put the Chihuahua down but the staff was always so gracious to allow me to bring Suzy in every other week even though she did not need to be groomed. It was my two shih tzus that needed the bi-weekly grooming, and they always welcomed Suzy to stay so she did not feel left out.”
