here. It’s never happened. This is Gilroy, this is our backyard.” Rebboah, who began his career at RCS in 1994 as a residential counselor says, “to be acknowledged and awarded and to be objectively recognized it’s just fabulous. It just tells me that we’re on the right path.” Rebboah attended a Chamber of Commerce breakfast late last year where Mark Turner, President/CEO of the Chamber, announced that RCS was chosen to receive the award which was presented to Rebboah in February at the San Juan Oaks Golf Club in Hollister. “We were just thrilled to death,” says Rebboah. After finding out about the award Rebboah proudly announced the news to the entire workforce at RCS who he says is the reason behind the acknowledgement. ➝ 6

n any given community hundreds of nonprofits are working to provide support and guidance to better its cause, but one organization in particular has made its name by serving the needs of more than 3,000 children each year. For more than 100 years Rebekah Children’s Services, (RCS), has made the underserved in our community a priority. This year RCS was honored with the title, Non-profit of the Year, by the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce, the first time the organization has received such a prestigious award. “It was a huge surprise, a massive surprise,” says Christophe Rebboah, chief executive officer. “This is something we’ve worked so hard for, and to get to ever since I’ve been

“People stopped me in the hallways to congratulate me,” Rebboah says, adding that he told them, “Don’t congratulate me, congratulate yourself, you’re the reason why we’re here.” The CEO is quick to point out that besides an outstanding workforce having the right people in leadership roles is key. Rebboah believes his executive staff, Chief Clinical Officer, Jennifer Grier, Chief Operations Officer Educational Services, Rebecca Burdett, and Chief Financial Officer, Elsa Dahl, is a winning team. “I think the fact that we have such a stellar, committed, team of executives it’s really positioned us to where we are today. I feel like we’re just getting started. I feel like we’re still building the foundation but it’s strong, and it feels good,” says Rebboah. Grier, whose association with RCS began 20 years ago couldn’t agree more. “I know that we have worked diligently over the past couple of years to really connect with all the community members and really

further those relationships so that they’re not just in existence but that they’re meaningful.” Burdett is equally excited to be part of, “this dynamic and meaningful growth and change.” “As the needs of our community have changed over the years, RCS has been able to diversify and adapt to better meet the community’s needs. It has also been exciting and humbling to see how our community members, businesses, donors and sponsors step forward to partner with RCS. It is because of the generosity of these individuals that RCS is able to serve each and every member of our community that walks through the doors in need of help or support. We truly could not do this important work without our community partners,” says Burdett. Three years ago, Rebboah took on the role of CEO. Since then he and the executive team have focused on reestablishing awareness within the community regarding the myriad of services offered through RCS. “Even though we’re here I ➝ 15

O

ne of the classics of the Broadway stage, Guys and Dolls, with music and lyrics by Frank Loesser, is a can’t-lose gamble for theater producers and audiences alike. South Valley Civic Theatre’s current production, which marks the end of the community theater’s 49th season, brings together a number of seasoned area actors for three hours of rollicking energy and touching emotional moments in the story of 1940s New York City gamblers and their “dolls.” Typical musical theater character lists have four romantic leads: the “serious” pair and the comedic pair. Guys and Dolls plays a bit with this formula with lead gambler Nathan Detroit and his fiancee of

14 years, Miss Adelaide, providing plenty of comedy but also some true emotions, and the more serious pair, high-rolling gambler Sky Masterson and missionary Sarah Brown, who follow the more traditional path of a mismatched pair who fall in love against their better judgment. The plot, based on Damon Runyon’s grittier stories of New York’s criminal underground, revolves around Detroit’s search for a copsfree site for his floating craps game. In order to cough up the $1,000 he needs to front the space, he bets Masterson that Masterson won’t be able to convince the prim and proper Sarah to accompany him on a date to Havana. But when Masterson promises Sarah he can deliver 10 sinners to her

Save-A-Soul Mission in Times Square, how can she resist? In the meantime, Detroit is avoiding matrimony with the same zeal he evades the cops, much to the chagrin of his long-suffering girlfriend, a hot-box dancer. In the hands of director Myra Kaelin, the SVCT cast brings a ton of enthusiasm to the show, with Michael Kaelin an earnest-yet-rowdy Nathan Detroit, Joe Hartwell a convincing Sky Masterson, Megan Griffin a convincingly prudish missionary Sarah Brown, and Hilary Little as cute as a button as Miss Adelaide. Little has the most significant musical theater background of the four, with time spent in the cast of Beach Blanket Babylon, and it shows in her vocal style, with an endearing squeak at the front end of phrases in such songs as “Bushel and a Peck” and the sexy “Take Back Your Mink.” Michael Kaelin’s Nathan Detroit is all physical energy and over-thetop emoting, and he rocks the crazy window-pane check suits from costume designer Michelle Griffin. Joe Hartwell hides his Tennessee accent well in his delivery as Sky Masterson, and he also gets the lion’s share of the male-based songs, including the iconic “Luck Be a Lady.” His voice meshes nicely with Griffin’s in duets “I’ll Know” and “I’ve Never Been in Love Before.” Griffin’s somewhat nasal soprano tends to veer a bit closer to the comedic than the romantic, but she shares good chemistry both with Hartwell and with Little on “Marry the Man Today.” Music director Carol Harris leads a brass-heavy 12-piece live orchestra, always a nice addition to a musical theater production. Choreographers Jyovonne Montosa and Nicole Tung keep a large cast moving in inventive ways. South Valley Civic Theatre presents ‘Guys and Dolls’ through July 7 at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, 17090 Monterey Road, Morgan Hill. Visit, svct.org.

Health. Compassion. Innovation

I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone at Hazel Hawkins’ ER Department for their kindness and concern for me while I was there having a heart attack on May 19th. From the time I check in (at 1:55pm) until I left in the Ambulance transferring to Santa Clara Kaiser, every single person I came in contact with was polite, cheerful, caring and kind. We could only remember my main nurse Jeremiah and doctor’s names Doctor Bogey. Unfortunately we could not get the many others that where assisting that day.

I believe that their quick actions to address my symptoms helped save my life. After they have completed my cardiac catheterization and stenting at Kaiser, they confirmed a 99% blockage of my LAD artery and I survived a “widow maker heart attack”. I am on the road to recovery now verse my family planning for funeral in no small part thanks to the team at Hazel Hawkins that day. I know that normally businesses get mostly comments on bad service. That is why I wanted to convey my sincere thanks to everyone who was affiliated with my care working in the ER that day. I hope my thanks will be passed along to the crew because we just don’t hear THANK YOU enough.

POWER HOUSE Rebboah says he along with Jennifer Grier and Elsa Dahl make a winning team—furthering RCS success. happiness, and wellbeing and you’re only going to do that if you’re brave and bold and go where the need is,” says Rebboah. “It’s going to take a team of people who are absolutely committed and have a bit of bravery to go where that need is because it’s places where people normally do not go.” RCS’s current staff count is 230, which includes administrative, licensed and non-licensed clinicians, marriage and family therapists, and licensed clinical social workers. “I believe we’re well structured. It’s really a family atmosphere, we take care of each other,” says Rebboah. The driving force behind all those associated with RCS is the realization that what they do does make a difference, and it’s the reason they continue doing that work. “It only takes making a difference in one kids life that makes all the work worthwhile,” says Grier, adding, “You want a child to have a childhood “ “We don’t take what we do lightly, it’s such a privilege to do what we do,” says Rebboah. “It’s hard work but it’s extremely rewarding. I couldn’t have it any other way, honestly.” For more information about RCS go to: rcskids.org/about.

There is no wrong door to come through here, every door is open to any child and family in need. That’s why we’re here. We’re here to serve anybody who is in need of a helping hand,” says Rebboah. Currently, RCS offers a Family Resource Center, Hospital Diversion, a non-public school (IEP), Individualized Education Plan, Outpatient Mental Health assistance, Prevention and Education services, Residential Treatment, Therapeutic Behaviors Services, and Wraparound services. The intention behind each of the programs and services is to provide guidance, information, and support, to children and families in need. “The more we can expand and get into communities that are in need, that’s very tied to our strategic plan, very tied to our mission statement. GETTING OUT

Rancho San Vicente

Ron Erskine

SKY HIGH New hiking trails beckon hikers to Calero hillside.

Calero County Park’s New Entrance JUNE 29, 2018

By RON ERSKINE

16

A

t the bottom of the Almaden Valley, the hiking trails of Calero County Park crisscross the slopes above the park's namesake reservoir. If you have recently traveled McKean Road, you may have noticed some construction hubbub a half mile below the reservoir dam. Work at the new Rancho San Vicente entrance, which adds new hiking trails over new terrain, is done and the entrance is open... sort of. I say "sort of " because on my early April visit, it was clear that

there is still work to do: porta-potties stand in for unfinished toilets, no trail maps are available at the trailhead, some 4-by-4 trail posts have no signs attached, and the trail map I downloaded from the web didn't include trails I encountered on my hike. But I am glad to overlook undone punch list items by an agency that makes such lovely open space available for us to roam. As you lace up your boots in the Rancho San Vicente parking lot, look up at the broad tower-topped hill on your left. The newly opened trails cut a number of routes up, over, and around this hill, revealing

fresh views and delivering a lovely day out. On an earlier swing-in visit to the parking area, I noticed that there were no trail maps, so I looked online and was surprised to see one there. With that in hand, I crossed two cattle gates and set out on the Lisa Killough Trail that leads over a shoulder to the back side of the hill. About a mile along the way, the trail split; one fork was a continuation of the Lisa Killough Trail, the other was a named trail not on my map. I was more interested in going up the hill rather than maintaining a low course around it, so I turned left and largely ignored my map for the next two miles. I knew that if I continued a counter clockwise course around the hill, I would eventually drop down to the Cottle Trail by the reservoir. As I climbed across the backside of the hill, I enjoyed special views over New Almaden toward Loma Prieta and Mount Umunhum. At the top, I looked back toward home. Calero Reservoir, the Almaden Valley, and the Diablo Range spread out beneath me. Terrific. While there we no stunning wildflower displays, I saw an amazing variety: poppies, cream cups, checkerbloom, bird's-eye gilia, California gilia, Johnny-jump ups, woodland star, lupine, and mule's ears to name but a few. My course around the mountain finally dropped me down to Cottle Trail and the edge of Calero Reservoir. From there, it was a lovely, mostly shaded three-mile traverse back to the parking lot. If you don't have the "sense of direction" chip, take note. Download a map and stick to the Lisa Killough/Cottle Trail route, an eightmile loop that circles the entire newly opened property. Short of that, venture a mile or two to the back of the hill for great views and a real sense of solitude.

Creating Relationships for Life I have been working since I was 9 years old in the Philippines, helping my mom and grandma in their store. I have always enjoyed working with people and helping them. I moved to the states to be with family and continue my college experience, and loved the states so much that I stayed and made my life for myself. Met my wonderful husband and started our family over 30 years ago. I have had my real estate license since 1996, and what better way to help people than with their real estate needs and making their home buying or selling dreams come true. Whether I am working with sellers or buyers, my goal is to make their real estate transaction as smooth as possible. I listen to my client’s expectations and do my best to exceed their needs.
