H

ave passport, will travel! It’s a common cry for those bitten by the travel bug.

AUGUST 31, 2018

For wine lovers, however, travel takes on a whole new meaning—typical destinations revolve around terroir and taste. For the South Valley oenophile, or wine connoisseur, making a complete daycation out of wine tasting is made easier—and more fun— with a tour. Leave the driving—and the logistics—to the lively and contagiously energetic Ana Lelescu of California Passport Tours. Her mission is to intimately connect participants with the history, beauty and bounty of this winegrowing region by introducing them to the people who make it happen. “Our tours focus on bringing local friends and neighbors together to showcase our unique South Santa Clara Valley lifestyle,” says Lelescu.

Lelescu’s business offers the perfect way to indulge during Fall 2018 Passport—a monthlong event put on by the Wineries of Santa Clara Valley. Formerly a weeklong endeavor, the organization expanded its Wine Passport Week to an entire month for the first time in March for its Spring 2018 Passport. And now, just in time for harvest, the organization has done it again for Fall Passport, which takes place Sept. 8-30. With Fall Passport in hand, folks can enjoy everything from wine tastings at 31 participating wineries to a wine country lunch or dinner—perhaps both—at many area restaurants. And they can take advantage of reduced rates at local lodging establishments. Lescalu, a Morgan Hill resident, says with being minutes away from the busy Silicon Valley, she’s interested in providing a reprieve from dealing daily with stress and sitting in traffic. “We want to transport our guests to an ➝ 4

oasis of good food, wine and friendship,” she says. “It’s also fun when our guests feel like a wine traveler to Italy or France on our special-themed trips, like ‘Taste of Italy,’ and ‘Silicon Valley Pathways to the Rhone.’” Lelescu, who grew up in repressive communist Romania and came to the U.S. in 1992, was eager for a chance to spread her wings in America. She started the California Passport tours based on significant “tour guide” expertise, garnered by showing her beloved family and friends from the old homeland a good time whenever they visited her in the states. “All my family and friends are far away, and when they come to visit, we love to be outdoors, hiking and visiting wineries close by,” Lelescu says. “Also, I grew up on a farm and I love being close to people who respect the land and its bounty.” She couldn’t be more thrilled with the reception her tours have enjoyed. “Living in Morgan Hill is a blessing,” says Lelescu. “Everyone I meet at Chamber of Commerce meetings or for coffee is genuinely excited about California Passport Tours. I am very grateful to all Santa Clara Valley winery owners and their staff. Their friendship and support are real and mean a lot to me.”

And Lelescu’s customers aren’t shy about their praise for California Passport Tours. Mryna Robles, a new San Martin resident who often hosts friends and family from out of town says she’s hired California Passport Tours twice so far and is delighted with its professionalism and laidback attitude. “They kept us on track while striving to reach the wineries in our itinerary,” says Robles. “We hired them again because they make everything so simple, and we get the VIP treatment at the wineries they schedule for us.” Robles was equally impressed with the flexibility of the company and its efforts to accommodate the needs of her party. “Our group has some dietary restrictions, and they went above and beyond ensuring we could have good options for lunch,” Robles says. “We really enjoyed having lunch brought to us at the wineries and having our tastings served alongside. I don’t know many other companies that would go this extra mile.” As a repeat customer, Robles says she eagerly recommends them to anyone seeking a unique outing in the flourishing wine district of the South Valley. “Ana is great at planning the itinerary, meals, snacks, and ➝ 12

THEATER INSIDERS Waiting for opening night in Limelight Actors Theater’s run of ‘It’s Only a Play.’

Limelight’s fall show is only a play AUGUST 31, 2018

By SUSAN L. RIFE

K

evin Heath, co-founder of Limelight Actors Theater in Gilroy, had an interesting experience when he requested scripts of Terrence McNally’s “It’s Only a Play” from publisher Samuel French. There are two versions of the pla—McNally’s original 1982 script, and an updated and revised script that opened on Broadway in 2014, starring Nathan Lane, Matthew Broderick, Megan Mullally, Stockard Channing and F. Murray Abraham. “I thought wow, if all these people got together…. I’ve got to read

this script,” said Heath. But when he called Samuel French to see about getting the Broadway script, he was told they’d have to sell all their copies of the old script first. “How many do I have to buy?” Heath quipped. He didn’t have to go that far, but he was also surprised that the new script had cut a role he’d already discussed with an actor for casting. Awkward. (The actor had to back out due to family obligations.) “It’s Only a Play” is a bit of a theater insider’s play, as a group of theater people await the opening-night

reviews of a new play. The Limelight production will star Jason Harris as the playwright of the show, Peter Mandel as Harris’s best friend, Rachel Perry as a novice producer, Rosalind Farotte as the diva, Bruce Pember as the director, Michael Johnson as a drama critic and Gannon Janisch as a coat check attendant. Heath, who is directing the show, said he laughed all the way through his first reading of the script, but he did wonder if “I’m not a theater person, will I get it?” “With the exception of some of the playwrights (named in the script), everyone’s going to know the names,” he said. “It’s a quality script. We love comedies, but it’s not the only thing we do. When I pick a comedy, I try to pick what I call an intelligent comedy. I think that’s important. My favorite show is a show that will make you laugh and cry.” The cast includes some newcomers to the Limelight troupe. Johnson has served as musical director for recent shows at Limelight, including “Always… Patsy Cline” and “Tenderly, the Rosemary Clooney Musical,” but “It’s Only a Play” will mark his acting debut. Mandel, president of the South Valley Civic Theatre board and frequently seen in SVCT productions in Morgan Hill, has been on Heath’s radar for some time. “He embodies Woody Allen, the humor of Woody Allen,” said Heath. And the show is Janisch’s debut in an all-adult cast. He’s 15. The show also has “a little cameo for a dog,” said Heath. “There’s a whole dog gag running throughout the show,” he said. “It’s Only a Play” by Terrence McNally. Limelight Actors Theater. Performances Sept. 7-29 at Gilroy Center for the Arts, 7341 Monterey St, Gilroy. Tickets $25, $22 seniors. 408.472.3292; limelightactorstheater.com.

even visited and chatted with us in person at a winery on both occasions,” says Robles. “She’s such a warm, kind and effective woman.” Rochelle Henson agrees. Henson, who works in Morgan Hill with Kennett Productions, a firm specializing in event consultation and development, says she hired California Passport tours for a team-building outing. Henson says there are a lot of different elements to California Passport Tours that make for a special experience. “It’s great hiring a company that is local and can make suggestions on wineries to fit your group’s needs,” says Henson. “They also provided a catered lunch from one out of five local restaurants. It was so nice to not have to worry about packing food for the group, and our meal was set up and ready for us after our wine tour. It was also great being able to not have to worry about calling all of the wineries to make reservations; they do all of that for you.” Henson says the company is great to work with and made their day so carefree. The fact that California Passport Tours is local, however, is what Henson believes makes for a unique experience. “They have made relationships with the restaurants that they work

with and the wineries.” says Henson. “They also know the area well and are able to help you customize a schedule that allows you to make the most of your day. Another aspect I was very impressed with was that they called me the night before to confirm everything and to make sure I didn’t have any questions.” The secret, Lelescu explains, is that her tour guests will be treated like she treats her own family whenever they visit. “We love to celebrate and savor every moment when we are together as I am never sure when I will see them again,” she says. As for the experiences of her guests, Lelescu proudly says they’ll leave with “lots of laughs and hugs.” For Fall Passport, Lelescu created a special package for eight people for $720 (plus service fee) that includes wine passports for each person, tastings at four wineries and a gourmet picnic lunch at the second. Guests may choose the four wineries they want to visit, or ask Lelescu to customize the tour. For more information about California Passport Tours, visit californiapassporttours.com.
