Hidden gem Small classes at Calvary Christian By JENNY ARBIZU
N
estled in a Hollister neighborhood at the corner of Highland Drive sits Calvary Christian School. Blending into the scenery, few know it’s been there since 1977. “People can live in our community for years and not even realize we exist,” says principal Rick Mattish. The K-12 college preparatory school—Hollister’s only Christian high school—not only prepares students for college, Mattish says it teaches students how to live successfully as Christians. Beyond its core curriculum, the school offers instruction in art, music, gardening, and physical education, as well as athletics. With a 10:1 ratio, small classes allow teachers to focus on students’ individual needs.
As a member of the American Association of Christian Schools, Calvary Christian participates in the association’s annual Academic and Fine Arts Competition. “When people think of school academic competitions, they think of spelling bees and science fairs,” he says. “It has those, but then it has other things as well.” Families shouldn’t be deterred by costs. “We have a philosophy,” Mattish says. “If you want your kids to be here, we want to do everything we can to get them here.” Calvary Christian School is located at 1900 Highland Drive in Hollister. Oakwood School Breaking New Ground
The Oakwood Groundbreaking Ceremony, which occured on May 10, 2018, included Nikhita Gopisetty (in red) who represented the HS students.
Growth and progress have always been a part of Oakwood School’s history.
Divya Gopisetty posing with her parents at the 2018 Stanford Graduation.
Nikhita is currently a Senior at Oakwood and was one of five Bay Area teens who headed to Washington D.C. last year with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to meet with two U.S. senators and members of Congress to talk about renewing $150 million in federal funding to find a cure for the disease. Like her older sister, she has also been able to balance academics and extracurricular activities so that she has discovered where her passion and interest lie. Nikhita is the Stage Manager for Oakwood Performing Arts productions, President of the Speech and Debate Team, and plays tennis with the Girls’ Varsity Tennis Team. When people visit the Oakwood School campus, they feel there is
something quite special. The reason for this is no secret. When children are taught in a small and nurturing classroom environment by subjectfocused teachers who love what they do (Oakwood boasts a 9:1 student teacher ratio), wonderful things happen. Add to that a strong curriculum, broad extracurricular opportunities and beautiful facilities, and you have an educational opportunity that is unmatched in the area. The Oakwood Scholars Program and financial aid opportunities put the school within any young scholar’s reach. Oakwood School has reached another pivotal point in its history with the launch of Spreading Our Roots: Oakwood Campus Expansion Project. The project includes a new Liberal Arts building, gymnasium, and a playfield. These projects are well underway, advancing the school’s ability to provide enhanced hands-on learning opportunities and
OCTOBER 19, 2018
The Oakwood School story began in 1959, when Gwen Riches, an educator and artist, gathered her children and their friends for an afterschool arts program in her home. The Riches’ family home became Pinewood School, which still thrives today in Los Altos. Fast-forward 40 years, when Gwen Riches’ eldest granddaughter, Michelle Helvey, and her husband, Ted, founded Oakwood School in Morgan Hill. Today, Oakwood School is flourishing with an enrollment of nearly 500 preschool through twelfth grade students on a 30-acre campus tucked away behind the intersection of Monterey Street and Watsonville Road. One local family has been with Oakwood for many of those years. When Divya and Nikhita Gopisetty started at Oakwood School in seventh and second grades, they didn’t know what their futures had in store for them, but their parents believed that Oakwood would provide an excellent foundation for them to discover who they were and how they wanted to shape the world. During her time at Oakwood, Divya co-founded the Speech and Debate Team, was the captain of the Girls’ Varsity Basketball team, and also participated in the Interact Community Service Club, where she was able to engage in social justice issues that mattered to her. These
experiences helped Divya grow as a student, individual, and leader, supporting her next chapter in life. After graduating from Oakwood in 2014, she headed to Stanford, where she earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology and was honored to speak at Stanford’s 2018 graduation ceremony.
expanded extracurricular offerings for current students, as well as sustaining excellence in education decades into the future. These enhancements greatly support two of the key tenants that set Oakwood apart from other schools – confident self-expression and unbridled exploration. At the heart of the Liberal Arts building is a 200-seat theater, along with a Maker’s Lab where students will be able to build whatever they can imagine and turn their technological dreams into reality. Oakwood students from first grade through twelfth grade study drama, take part in plays and musicals, and learn a variety of increasingly complex visual arts techniques. They also participate in PE classes and compete in a variety of athletic programs. After years of thoughtful planning, the projects and initiatives the school has underway are transforming the campus and making it possible for future generations of Oakwood students and faculty to excel and discover, to imagine and pioneer, to lead and transform. This growth will propel a bright new generation of gifted young people into vital leadership roles that create an even better Oakwood and amplify students’ impact on the world— both locally and globally. Like the Gopisetty girls, these students will have active learning and critical thinking skills to create a bold, new world and a shining future. We can’t wait to see the great heights they reach next.

long-standing Hollister landmark, Sacred Heart Parish School, first opened its doors in 1891 as a Catholic day and boarding school. While the school continues to take pride in preserving its Catholic traditions by supporting the child’s spiritual growth, it also promotes the whole child’s academic, emotional and social development. “We strive in all of our different activities to create an environment where we’re not only promoting our family of Sacred Heart and our community, but we’re also striving to help them have the best tools for the future,” says Sacred Heart
Parish School principal Dr. Rachel McKenna. The Catholic elementary school offers these tools in a variety of ways. For instance, Sacred Heart gives students in preschool through eighth grades the opportunity to learn in a small-class setting. “We range from about 15 to 25 in each one of our classes,” McKenna says. The cap of every classroom count will remain at 25, McKenna adds, as she strongly believes in the benefit of the smaller classroom. A variety of courses, both curricular and extracurricular electives, are also offered. Physical education and Spanish are part of the preschool through
eighth grade curriculum. These grades also take music, where they learn the recorder in fourth grade and the keyboard in seventh grade. Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) as well as digital arts are integrated into the curriculum. Grades three through eight take STEM and grades four through eight grade take digital arts— where students learn to create animation and digital images. For the junior high, grades six through eight, students have a pool of electives to choose from: guitar, sewing, cooking, photography, improv, and robotics (where coding is taught). “The sixth, seventh and eighth graders are really excited about the different opportunities they’re getting in their learning,” McKenna said. This also includes learning the French languwage. With two foreign languages offered at the school, McKenna says students appreciate the different choices given. Sacred Heart is also a member of the San Benito Athletic League, which is made up of rural and private schools in the county. Students are able to participate in sports such as volleyball, flag football, basketball, soccer, track and field, and cross country. In her third year as Sacred Heart’s principal, McKenna says she enjoys meeting alumni in the community. “We have alumni who are very invested in wanting to support us,” McKenna says. “And it’s really beautiful to see such a rich support system in the Hollister community. She welcomes anyone hoping to be part of this community to inquire about it. “If there is an interest, please take an opportunity to reach out,” she says. “There are scholarships and financial grant aid opportunities to make it possible.” For more information, call 831.637.4157 or visit sacredheartschool.org. Sacred Heart Parish School is located at 670 College Street in Hollister.

hen Laura Leeson was hired as Hollister SDA (Seventh Day Adventist) Christian School’s fifth through eighth grade teacher, she recalls a comment a school board member made about the school’s new building. The board member said “they built this school big with the belief if you build something wonderful, people will come,” Leeson recalls. Formerly located on Santa Ana Road, the school’s new location and look is breathtaking. The 13,000-square foot school at 400 Isabel Drive sits on a sprawling 8 acres right off McCloskey Road. Principal Fio Ferraro, who teaches kindergarten through fourth grades, says while the bible is their “main textbook,” the school also focuses on
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM). Students have a science library to support this approach, as well access to iPads. They also have a commercial kitchen, and a basketball and volleyball court. The school also has a vast library and (for the time being) two multi-classrooms, with Ferraro and Leeson as teachers. With two extra classrooms, Ferraro encourages local daycare center or health clinics to inquire about a rental opportunity. Financial aid is also available, and the school is offering the last month’s tuition free to first-time students. irector Yolanda Sullivan’s dedication to young children began in 1987 when she first opened Little Sonshine School in Morgan Hill. “It started in the back of my house,” Sullivan said. Rooted in the Christian faith, her first class consisted of three students, today current enrollment is 50. Although the class size has grown, Little Sonshine’s goal remains the same, instilling the belief in God and his love for us all. Sullivan believes that message, “makes a difference.” “It gives you a secure feeling there is someone bigger than mom and dad that is in control of things, looking out for us,” she said. The school offers Kindergarten and Transitional Kindergarten,
(TK), for 2- to 6-year-olds in addition to daycare and after school care. The hours of operation are: 7am-6pm. Classroom hours run from 8am-12:15pm, Monday through Friday. Tuition ranges from $370-$930 a month, dependent upon the number of days and curriculum selected. For more than 30 years Sullivan’s dedication to her students has never faltered and her mission continues. “At this age they, (the children), need to feel loved, accepted, and they need to feel that they’re secure, and we provide that,” Sullivan said smiling. EXPLORE Beyond its 335-acre campus, Mount Madonna School encourages students
to connect with nature, including its high school trip on the American River.

S
they are, what they value, and what responsibilities they have to themselves and their communities. “All of these things help our students develop into caring and engaged citizens,” Kelly said. “Education here is not only about content, what they learn, but it is really about process and relationship too,” said MMS marketing director Leigh Ann Clifton. Originally founded in 1979, MMS first began with a one-room schoolhouse—its first graduating class, in 1985, consisted of a single student. Today the school serves Pre/K through 12th grade with current enrollment at 185. MMS is fully accredited through Western Association of Schools and Colleges and California Association

ituated on 355 acres of redwood forest with views of the entire Monterey Bay, Mount Madonna School (MMS) offers its students an environment like no other. “At MMS, we ask our students to take care of this beautiful land they are schooled on,” upper school Shannon Kelly. “We ask them to understand the impact of their choices environmentally and socially.” With more than 40 educators, MMS is committed to educating the whole child by focusing on academic excellence, creative self-expression and positive character development, all which help prepare their students for a successful and meaningful life. Students are asked to explore who
of Independent Schools and is an independent non-sectarian college preparatory school. Tuition ranges from $10,890 per year for part-time Pre/K classes and up to $24,010 per year for 11th and 12th grades. One noticeable difference at MMS is the class size, with the maximum students per class capping out at 20. Admissions director Benna Dimig said another unique aspect about the school is the school’s emphasis on the performing arts. “One thing that sets us apart is that our performing arts program starting in sixth grade, is mandatory,” Dimig said. “They are going to take dance and voice and music, it’s part of who we are and what we do.” Three times each school year all students from Pre/K and up have the opportunity to perform on stage. At the close of each school year the entire school participates in an annual performance of the Ramayana!, with this year marking the play’s 41st year in production.Dimig believes this type of mandatory curriculum helps build a student’s self-confidence as well as empathy for others. “How they impact their class and their community, it brings all that to life,” Dimig said, adding, “There’s a foundation of confidence and trust in themselves and in others that just can’t be built any other way.” Continually inspired by teaching staff at MMS, Both Clifton and Dimig credit them with the success and longevity of the school. “I love what we’re doing up here. I love the program, I love the amount of passion and concern for each student that our faculty and our staff and our administration really does have,” Dimig said. “I love the heart, the heart of the school.”

fter 25 years in the role of teacher at St. Mary’s School, Marcee Ervin has taken on a new role, school principal. “I love the school here, I love the community,” Ervin said. Founded in 1871 by the Immaculate Heart Sisters, St. Mary’s is not only a historic landmark but the only Catholic school in Gilroy. Ervin believes its longevity is due to the community. “I think the Catholic community in Gilroy is strong but I think our school community is really strong,” Ervin said. There are currently 264 students enrolled at St. Mary’s, which offers transitional kindergarten, (TK) through eighth grade. Tuition for a Catholic family is $8,100 per year,
per child, non-Catholic families, $10,500 dollars. Additional students per family are offered a discount, and tuition assistance is available. A main objective of the school is to, “to provide a quality Catholic education while fostering a welcoming community of faith.” Ervin believes that goal is achieved through the dedication of the school’s amazing teaching staff, many of which have been associated with the school for over a decade. “There is definitely a connectedness and a really strong sense among the teachers that we’re all here for all of the kids,” Ervin said. For more information on St. Mary’s located at 7900 Church Avenue, visit: dsj.org/blog/school/st-mary/, or call, 408.842.2827.

T
he classic story of Aladdin and his magic lamp from “A Thousand and One Arabian Nights” comes to swirling, colorful, enthusiastic life in the South Valley Civic Theatre production of Disney’s Aladdin Jr. Starring Oliver Kaelin in the title role and Jillian Puente as Princess Jasmine, the musical sweeps through the Arabian city of Agrabah, where even a street urchin like Aladdin has the opportunity to change his life. Along the way, he manages to partner up with the sultan’s daughter, who’s trapped in her own set of circumstances. Director/vocal director Carol Harris coaxes creditable performances
from her young cast (all children and young teens) who make up with energy and enthusiasm whatever they may lack musically or choreographically. There’s a lot of tearing around the stage and overemoting going on, but the show is such a lark, it’s impossible not to love it. Kaelin, the middle child of a Morgan Hill theater family, has a winning, wide smile that is perfect for the scamp Aladdin, an orphan who must make his way through life on his wits along. “One Jump Ahead” perfectly sums up his hardknock life with his friend Babkak (Josh Watts), Omar (Kiera Gallagher) and Kassim (Riley Brown); “Proud of Your Boy” makes clear his desire to live a better life.
Things start to break his way when he snitches the golden lamp that houses the genie who will fulfill three wishes; Angelina Villafranca is a hoot in a fluorescent green genie costume and gloves whose fingertips light up. Aladdin’s a good-hearted enough kid to save a wish for Genie to get her own freedom; it’s a win-win-win solution all the way around. Puente’s Jasmine is just lovely, with just enough of a pout to convey his displeasure with her father’s insistence on an arranged marriage. “These Palace Walls” nicely sums up her dismay at essentially being imprisoned inside a gilded cage. But for these two to find the path to happiness, they must first get by a bad guy, in this case Jafar (menacingly played by PJ Crocker), who has his own eyes on the sultan’s throne. Jafar’s inept assistant/ servant, Iago, is hilariously played by Max Brown. “A Whole New World” is a wondrous scene, as fog fills the stage and Aladdin and Jasmine ride through the clouds on a flying carpet (ingeniously crafted from a motorized skateboard). Director Harris also managed a simple yet elegant set design that flipped between the marketplace and the sultan’s palace, as well as costume design for the dozens of characters, who fill the stage with a swirl of colorful scarves and jangling coin belts. Glitches with microphones and sound effects that didn’t always match the action on stage barely detract from the fun that is “Aladdin Jr.” THEATER REVIEW Disney’s Aladdin Jr. Music by Alan Menken. Lyrics by Howard Ashman, Tim Rice and Chad Beguelin. Presented by South Valley Civic Theatre. Through Oct. 20, 2018, at the Morgan Hill Community Playhouse, 17090 Monterey St, Morgan Hill. Tickets $25, $20 seniors, $16 youth; 800.838.3006. For more information: svct.org.
