loven hoofs and bleats abound up against tree poses at a farm in San Martin—the original goat yoga has officially come to the South Valley.
4
Lainey Morse, founder and CEO of Goat Yoga, said she came up with the idea in 2016 at her farm in Oregon. “It’s something that just kind of developed by accident,” she said. Going through a rough patch, Morse said she would spend a lot of time outdoors with her goats— eventually she began inviting her friends to join her. Some were also having
a rough time of it with physical illness, cancers or depression. “Everytime they left, everyone left happy and so I started calling it goat happy hour,” Morse says. A friend and yoga instructor who had been invited to Morse’s property encouraged Morse to allow her to host a yoga class, and the rest, as they say is history. ➝ 6

“All of a sudden it was this wave of people that was interested in my Facebook event,” Morse recalls. “It was so many that I freaked out and took it down.” I couldn’t have 400 people show up at my house she thought. “I put it on Eventbrite, and we had our first class and it was sold out.” With its first San Martin event debuting this summer in August, Goat Yoga includes 30 minutes of Goat Yoga followed by Goat Happy Hour. Morse says most of the participants have never done yoga before. “It’s just hanging out with the goats bonding, snuggling taking pictures and having fun,” she says. Morse says they’ve gained tons of exposure and the classes have
all sold out since they launched in August. “We’ve already done a private event for Airbnb corporate, booking Facebook, Google Autodesk,” she adds. Yoga instructor and Original Goat Yoga franchise owner Lucy Jay says people began tagging her in on goat yoga posts when Morse began goat yoga in Oregon two years ago. “I have been a yoga teacher and a goat mamma for most of my adult life,” acknowledges Jay. “I, of course, thought it was cute, but I was not really interested in becoming a goat yoga teacher.” However, once her friend in Los Angeles brought Jay to her first class, Jay’s perspective quickly changed. “The yoga was surprisingly ➝ 15

New organic food store is shoppers’ dream
8
By MARY BARTHOLOMEW
S
outh Valley’s latest gem is South Bay Natural Foods, located at 8120 Westwood Drive in Gilroy. Offering savvy shoppers a rotating selection of premium natural and organic foods at low prices, South Bay Natural Foods is a cherry pickers' dream come true to shop and compare prices for the best deals. Buying organic can be expensive and cost prohibitive, especially in the Bay Area. The small store, opened just four months ago, promises deep savings of 50 percent or more on many recognizable organic brand names. Father and son owners John and Anthony Anagnostakis bring 32
years of grocery and produce wholesale distribution experience. “We got into organics because it’s an emerging market in the South Valley and there is a lot of competition with conventional food markets,” Anthony explains. “Our goal is to make organics accessible for people who otherwise would not be able to afford them.” Based on customer feedback, the Anagnostakis source inventory from multiple distributors to get the best product at the lowest price so that savings are passed on to their customer. Always greeting customers with a warm smile and speaking several languages, it’s easy for John
Anagnostakis to help his clients feel at home. As charming as its owners, the 2,500-square-foot retail space brings a smile because it is reminiscent of an old-fashioned mercantile store packed with a wide range of organic products, restaurant (industrial) size canned goods, homestead supplies and the odd essential. John explains he “enjoyed owning a small homestead, harvesting backyard produce and having animals.” It’s a one-stop shop for small homesteaders including such supplies as poultry feeders, natural feed, rabbit hutches, dog crates and kennels. Their human counterparts won’t be disappointed either with a wide selection of top organic and natural products including milks alternatives, organic baby foods, artisanal flours, an assortment of gluten-free products as well as non-GMO organics, a large selection of nutritious vegan snacks, and free trade coffee. With the addition of hard-tofind imported Italian pastas, grains and sections packed with frozen foods as well as dairy and home cleaning and toiletry products, South Bay Natural Foods is a great first stop on anyone’s shopping list. With three large grocery chain stores located just blocks away on First Street, competition is tough for this father-and-son organics business. However, the draw to South Bay Natural Foods is deep savings on familiar name brands of natural and organic products. As word of mouth travels, John and Anthony hope to expand by offering produce, deli and larger dairy selections. The duo is also looking to collaborate with gluten-free artisanal bakers to feature baked goods. “We are a small family business that provides a great service to the community with a low-cost natural food store,” says Anthony.

Rivaling Beyonce and Adele, Rihanna’s astonishing career has spanned a decade without flagging. Since dropping “S.O.S.” at age 18, the international pop sensation has unleashed a steady stream of bangers—“Disturbia,” “Rude Boy,” “Umbrella”— always capturing and advancing the contemporary sound simultaneously. The Barbados native belts out sultry hooks over always-exceptional production and has a knack for the infectious. Her latest entry into the cultural canon is “Work,” a pulsing ode to failed love, powered by dancehall steel drums, a quick-skipping earworm of a hook and two beyond-steamy music videos featuring the omnipresent Drake.

both women tout the benefits of the experience. “It’s no different than taking your dog for a walk you’re getting out in nature you're bonding with an animal and you're getting a little exercise,” Morse says. With the drive for instant gratification and quick-moving culture, Jay says slowing down and relaxing can make a big difference. “The pure, vulnerable joy that arises from the participants,” says Jay. “Yoga is very effective on its own to help people feel better. Other providers around the country offer classes indoors, but Morse is concerned it doesn’t lend itself to the full experience. “It takes away from the therapeutic aspect,” she says. “Who wants to be inside under fluorescent lights?” The furthest Jay has traveled so far is to downtown San Francisco for a private corporate event. “Driving miniature goats into the city is a real hoot, like we just laugh and wonder how we got here,” she says. Merlot rules Perfect wines for October
O
ctober is merlot month. Fitting, as much of California’s merlot is harvested from late September to mid-October. Church Creek Cellars in Gilroy has 4 acres of merlot on its 21-acre vineyard. Carl and Diana Barsody bought the place eight years ago, intending to sell fruit. But in 2011, with no buyers in place, they decided to make wine with some home winemaker friends. “It turned out better than we expected!” says Carl. The 2013 is a big, dense style, with some petite sirah. It’s a crowd favorite, although Borsody prefers the brighter, fresher 2014, which has a lively, strawberry-cherry core and enticing peppery edge.
By LAURA NESS
If you like easy and breezy, Fortino’s 2016 merlot is as shiny as a brand-new car, complete with that new car smell. It’s smooth and soft, like cherry cola cotton candy. Heller Estate’s 2014 merlot reveals many layers, with aromas of blackberry, sage, blueberry, leather and pine. With impeccable balance and vibrant acidity, it’s filled with blackberry jam and boysenberry pie. Another standout is Fernwood’s 2013 Mirepoix, 85 percent merlot with 9 percent cab sauv and 6 percent cab franc. Named for the French term for onions, celery and carrots slow-cooked in fat, this sleek, supple wine easily pairs with any cuisine. Winemaker Matt Oettinger calls it his “shotgun” wine.

Seeing Dreams Come True...
I started a career in Real Estate so I could help people make their dreams of owning a home come true. Owning your own home is one of everyone’s biggest dreams! And I get enjoyment out of seeing dreams come true. I have been working in Real Estate since 2003, making deals throughout California. I like working with sellers because they are moving on to another adventure in their future of home buying – either upgrading or downͲsizing. I like working with buyers because I like to see their reactions to the houses we look at. I also like the fulfillment of making their dream of owning a home come true. The most important thing I do for my clients is making myself available at all times – 7 days a week – morning, afternoon and evening.
