Two South Valley quilt shops with many notions to offer

beautifully made quilt brings warmth, joy and comfort for friends, family and strangers. For the quilter in your life, there are two great quilt shops in the South Valley each offering great ideas for holiday gift giving. Gift certificates to take the guesswork out of holiday gift-giving and both stores offer classes to help encourage new and experienced quilters alike. Nimble Thimble located in historic downtown Gilroy may look quaint with exposed brick and aged linoleum however it is a mecca for fabric with 5000 bolts. Owner Linda Williams of Nimble Thimble suggests BabyLock

quilting machines and sergers, Coronet long arm with a 10-foot frame, Arrow sewing furniture or Floriani’s Embroidery software for quilters. Nimble Thimble also offers a broad selection of holiday-themed panels, table runner patterns and a variety of project kits. Its extensive collection of threads including Floriani Encore sets, Genziana wool thread and Valarini threads are great gifts for those who enjoy embroidering the top sheet or embellishing wool appliqué. For a traditional quilting shop known for its large selection of baby flannels and Minky fabric selection, Morgan Hill’s Quilts and Things owner Laurie Perez offers personalized service.

Making quilts for charity such as “Sew Quilts for Veterans has been a gratifying experience,” says Caren Hanson of San Jose. Hanson a member of three local chapters Embroidery Guild of America. .Seasoned seamstresses will fawn over a hard-to-find cordless double-pointed iron or an Eversew sewing machine, complete with quilting capabilities. Owner Laurie Perez also recommends Cuddle Minky baby quilt kits, holiday panels, jigsaw pattern quilt kits, jelly rolls, layer cakes and rug making supplies are great gift ideas. High quality traditional flannels fabrics are great for those who would like to sew flannels shirts for one or the whole flock. With more than 5,000 bolts of fabric at Nimble Thimble and top-quality quilting fabrics offered at Quilts and Things including such reputable brands as Robert Kaufman, Moda, Marcus, Michael Miller, Rowan, Timeless treasure, Alexander Henry and Studio E fabrics—no quilter will go without. If you like to give back during the holidays, Williams at the Nimble Thimble organizes charity block get togethers to donate to St. Joseph Family Center. Tiles and a selection of gifts for non-quilters are also available. “If you want downtown Gilroy to thrive,” Williams says “then shop local in order for it to thrive.”

usband and wife, Cinda Meister, and Bradley Jones, co-owners of BookSmart, first opened their doors 23 years ago in downtown Morgan Hill. Ten years later they moved to Depot Center on Second Street. “And then we redeveloped and here we are,” Meister said, referring to their current location, 1295 East Dunne Avenue, Suite 120, where they moved in November 2016. With each move, the couple’s goal has remained the same, serving the community. “When they’re looking for a gift certificate or donation for their club, school or church, we always do whatever we can,” Jones said. In this day and age of big box stores BookSmart offers something unique as well, personal service. “It’s nice to shop where someone knows your name, or knows your face, or knows your family, you have a much more personal touch,” Meister said.

Finding that perfect holiday gift is easy at BookSmart, which offers a wonderful variety of books in addition to beautiful scarves, socks, gloves, hats that light up, (perfect for the holiday parade), 2019 calendars, art supplies, puppets, coloring books, markers, art supplies, and greeting cards. “We even have a great BBQ spatula to go with your cookbook,” Jones said. “We’re always looking for something just a little different, a little unique,” Meister said, adding that special orders are no problem. “If we don’t have what you want in stock, book wise, we can special order it for you, it just takes a day or two, there’s no additional charge.” BookSmart’s hours of operation: Monday-Friday 9am-7pm, Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm, (with extended hours during the holiday season). More than Comics

ill’s Bullpen isn’t just for comic book buffs. In fact, the Hollister store—commonly known for its comics and baseball cards—can be a life saver for the holiday shopper. “We’re a great store for last minute shopping and for confused people who don’t know what to get,” says owner, Bill Mifsud. Mifsud says the store is also a great place to buy stocking stuffers and gift exchange items (where price limits are usually set at $10 or $20). “We’re unique in terms of that sense,” he adds. After 31 years in business, Bill’s Bullpen has found success with being, what Mifsud calls, a “hodgepodge store.” Such items as sports apparel,

comic books, sports cards, sports memorabilia, and figurines such as Pop Funko figures can be found at the store. And the store will even make orders for customers who don’t want to purchase items online. Gift cards are available for those who are unsure of a gift choice. Mifsud says the secret to the success of the business—“There’s something there for everybody.” Bill’s Bullpen is located at 207 Fourth Street in Hollister. Store hours are Mon-Fri,11am - 8pm; Sat 10am-8pm; and Sun 11am-7pm. Special holiday hours are Mon-Sun, 9am-8pm. For more information, call 831.636.1180.

athina Szeto has only lived in Hollister for 12 years, but her store, San Benito Bene, has been thriving since its opening seven years ago. Part of its success is its Hollister location—on San Benito Street, in the midst of coffee shops, organic restaurants, and wine bars—and it also draws in shoppers looking to purchase local products. “We’re a locally inspired gift shop,” Szeto says. Perusing around the charming shop, visitors will delight in the array of items for sale—and to see many are local. Anyone looking for bath products will find goat milk lotions, body butters, and healing baths salts. There are also toys made in Hollister, and locally-made jewelry, chocolates and pottery.
