EDITOR’S NOTE

I

t’s ironic that many visitors experience Santa Cruz primarily via car. This area is known for its natural beauty, we have the beach and the redwoods, and yet a vacation here can easily be reduced to a series of car trips—back and forth, here and there, point A to point B. That will certainly get you to a lot of great places in Santa Cruz, but I’ve noticed that a deeper theme has risen from the stories in this Visitor Guide. Rather than a typical topic like ziplining, tough mudders, or some other extreme activity, our Outdoors section offers a guide to improving your experience and understanding of Santa Cruz with a walking tour. A feature in the Nightlife section explains why Midtown is Santa Cruz’s next big district—primarily because there’s so much entertainment, food and more all within walking distance. Need something to do that walking in? Our story on Pacific Avenue’s unreal selection of shoe stores will take care of you. Maybe we’re all looking for a way to slow down a little bit, and take a closer look. Santa Cruz is the ideal place for that. We can all start by putting one foot in front of the other. Be here now! S

ometimes the deepest relaxation comes when the world is tuned out entirely. Floating in the warm, Epsom-salt infused water of a sensory deprivation tank does the trick every time. Maybe it’s the magnesium sulfate—an essential mineral needed by every nerve ending in the body—absorbed through the skin, or maybe it’s the womb-like sensation of being held in the warm darkness, far from traffic, phone calls and emails, but after an hour spent in the tank, you’ll emerge feeling like a new human being. Be and Be Well, a wellness activation center located in the serene Santa Cruz Mountains, includes a flotation tank among its many wellness tools—available by the hour or for a transformational weekend with an “all night vision quest float.” Owned by the welcoming Jai and Shanti Hudes, who live on the property, Be and Be Well includes many quiet spaces to rest and recharge, and several rooms for

This quaint and unique B&B offers private quiet rooms and is a short walk from downtown. Each room has its own bathroom, and no two rooms share a wall. Enjoy lush gardens, top-notch bedding, and eco-friendly features.

Babbling Brook Inn 1025 Laurel St., Santa Cruz, 831-427-2437, babblingbrookinn.com

This B&B with 13 rooms is on one of the few redwood acres of land in downtown. Modern rooms in separate chalet-style buildings have private entrances, some with jet tubs, fireplaces and decks overlooking a historic waterwheel, shade gardens and waterfalls. accommodation, including a newly built treehouse. Other wellness-enhancing amenities at Be and Be Well, which is sometimes referred to as a “spiritual playground,” include a DryFloat tank with light and sound brainwave therapy, a space pod (yes, a space pod), a far infrared sauna, a traditional Native American sweat lodge, and a meditation room with a fireplace. Services include cleansing programs with foot detox and reflexology, lifestyle coaching, and massage, holistic skin and bodycare. “We take a lot of time with our clients,” says Shanti, “because we really honor the fact that they want to find out more about themselves—it’s a big deal.” They also put an emphasis on environmental sustainability. “We’ve been dealing with water issues, so we put in a graywater system,” says Jai, who also maintains a thriving aquaponics system. “It acts like an Earth-awareness demonstration. People really enjoy seeing

how the aquaponics system works so they can bring it back to their own space.” And just to round out this uniquely Santa Cruz experience, visitors also have the opportunity to play the soul-searching life tool card game, X the GAME, created by Jai Hudes. Those who play often finds that it can help with life choices and creative projects. Be and Be Well sleeps up to 10 people at a time (with breakfast served a la carte), and the Hudes welcome small retreats. But you don’t have to stay overnight to visit the facilities, which are open 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week. Its location in the serene Santa Cruz Mountains is within walking distance of the redwoods and less than 30 minutes to the beach. Be and Be Well is at 301 Kessler Drive, Ben Lomond. Walking tours are a unique opportunity to experience Santa Cruz’s sights, history and culture BY JUNE SMITH 16

VISITOR GUIDE | SANTACRUZ.COM | GTWEEKLY.COM | 2015

O

ne of the best ways to get acquainted with any city is an intimate walking tour, and Santa Cruz has a few that offer visitors

and locals some insight into the area:

SANTA CRUZ FOOD TOURS These are probably the most unusual walking tours locally, combining a history walk with culinary stops. Owner and guide Brion Sprinsock promises they will “fill

up your head along with your tummy,” as you visit places off the beaten track, some little-known even to locals. The downtown tour includes four to six food locations and a tour of Victorian architecture in two historic districts. Tasting locations include Laili and Assembly restaurants, the Penny Ice Creamery, the True Olive Connection, Buttercup Cakes and Surfrider Cafe. Santa Cruz tours are Friday and Sunday, while tours of Capitola are Thursday, both from

OUTDOORS 2:30-6 p.m. Walking distance is 1.8 miles in Santa Cruz and 2.5 miles in Capitola. Cost is $59.00 with online discount. Vegetarian and gluten-free options available. Season ends in November. 831-736-6343, santacruzfoodtour.com.

FIRST FRIDAY ART TOUR Founded by the Santa Cruz Institute of Contemporary Arts, this free self-guided walking tour began as a way to promote the Santa Cruz County art community. By partnering with local businesses, which host exhibits each month, First Friday organizers hoped to get local artists’ work seen while providing a new draw for participating businesses. They couldn’t have anticipated how successful they would be—First Friday has become one of Santa Cruz’s biggest social events every month. If driving to downtown Santa Cruz for First Friday, come early as the streets (and parking spots) fill up fast. Monthly exhibit listings are published in Good Times and on firstfridaysantacruz.com.

UCSC ARBORETUM A free-with-admission tour is offered on the first Saturday of each month at 11 a.m. starting at Norrie's Gift Shop at the UCSC Arboretum. Docent-led tours are available by advance request at $10 per person, which includes admission to the Arboretum. To wander around the gardens on your own, pick up a map at the visitor’s desk and bring binoculars for birdwatching. Picnic tables and benches are located throughout the gardens, inviting guests to linger. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m.,

admission is $5 adults, $2 children. 1156 High St., UCSC. 831-502-2998. arboretum.ucsc.edu/calendar.

MOBILE RANGER Mobile Ranger is a self-guided mobile-app tour of West Cliff Drive, the Municipal Wharf and the North Coast of Santa Cruz. App-based tours have a unique ability to bring a fun twist to the natural history that is distinctly Santa Cruz; it’s like having a park ranger with you. An expanded app from the company set to be released in June contains nearly a dozen tours of the Santa Cruz area. Tours are downloaded via Apple or Android stores and can be used along the entire route with an interactive map. A blue dot shows the person’s position relative to the tour stops, or via a table view. Mobile Ranger’s website also has blog posts with local history stories. mobileranger.com.

DATE NIGHT SANTA CRUZ Not a tour per se, but an excellent opportunity to take in local culture—and a stroll. The indie movie house folks at Nickelodeon Theatres have made a hit out of their “Date Night Santa Cruz” package. Through collaboration with 14 of Santa Cruz’s favorite locally owned restaurants, the $50 deal includes dinner and a movie for two. Tickets can be purchased at participating restaurants or at theater box offices and redeemed on Monday-Thursday evenings per restaurant schedule. It’s as simple as choosing one of the downtown Santa Cruz restaurants and then walking to see a film at the Nick or Del Mar theaters. The Aptos Cinema also partners with nearby restaurants. For full details, go to thenick.com.

Manresa/La Selva Manresa is a mélange of peaks, valleys and sandbars, but often the place is epic, breaking left and right and all over. Expect a long, grueling paddle during the wintertime to the outside.

Pleasure Point Like its moniker, this place is pleasure for just about everyone. As a result, it’s generally crowded with everyone from groms to experts, longboarders to ultra-thin glassed rippers.

Why Santa Cruz’s Pacific Avenue is a shoe fanatic’s dream BY WENDY MAYER-LOCHTEFELD 24

VISITOR GUIDE | SANTACRUZ.COM | GTWEEKLY.COM | 2015

SHOPS

S

anta Cruz is a habitat like no other for redwood trees, monarch butterflies and street musicians, but I’ve discovered something even more exquisite that populates Pacific Avenue in unusual abundance, and I hunt it down every chance I get. I’m talking shoes, in all of their glorious forms: high heels, flats, skate shoes, boots, even flip-flops. Downtown Santa Cruz’s main street is a wonderland of local shoe stores, which is both a good thing and a bad thing for an addict like me. I went wandering the other day, in vague search of a good travel shoe, but kept getting distracted by the bounty of alternatives on display. First, I hit the Grand Poobah of downtown shoe stores, Sockshop & Shoe Company, in the historic People’s Bank building. Twenty-five years old, it treats shoes like art and boasts a variety of stunners that are actually comfortable. It’s also a mother lode for socks. Need a pair with typewriters on them? Flying pigs? Frida Kahlo? Done, done and done. Sockshop owns another store just up the street called Old School Shoes that has all the great throwback brands: Chuck Taylors, Doc Martens, Pumas, etc. I spotted a pair of Vans recently with a scene from the original Star Wars on them. ’Nuff said. Sockshop and Old School serve as bookends to several other worthy Pacific Avenue shoe stops. Bunny’s is a must for the perfect party shoe and stylish must-have. If rhinestone-studded wedges are on your wish list, this is your happy place. Shoe Fetish (the most fitting name for a shoe store, in my book) is two doors down, for the guilty luxury you can’t justify but must have (their bags are the stuff dreams are made of). For international flair and brands off the beaten track, head across the street to O’ My Sole, which puts the cool into Spanish espadrilles and Danish boots. And lest we forget that this is a beach town, hit Flip Flop Shops Santa Cruz for all manners of slaps year-round. Beyond those footwear powerhouses, there are also Pacific Avenue stores like O’Neill, Pacific Wave, and Eco Goods that carry shoes along with surf, skate and specialty wear. Suffice it to say, anyone with impulse control issues around shoes could find him or herself in deep trouble on Pacific Avenue. (Did I mention that El Palomar is right next door to Bunny’s? Margaritas are directly correlated to crazy shoe purchases.) If I hide the boxes in my garage, no one will ever know ...

Welcome to

Midtown M

Santa Cruz’s most up-and-coming entertainment district hits its stride

T

he thing about Santa Cruz’s Midtown is that not everyone agrees on exactly where it is, or if it even exists. But exist it does, a long-held local designation that has emerged from the shadows of downtown Santa Cruz and Seabright slowly over the last decade. With more and more major events being drawn to its formerly sleepy stretch of Soquel Avenue, and two of Santa Cruz’s most popular music venues to anchor it, Midtown is undeniably the city’s newest breakout neighborhood. “It’s definitely become a destination spot,” says Laurence Bedford, owner of the Rio Theatre on Soquel Avenue. “It came out of the closet five years ago.” When Bedford took over the venerable Rio in 2000, renovating it from a dilapidated movie house to a premier performance venue, he says the area was more generically referred to as part of Santa Cruz’s Eastside. Depending on who you ask, Midtown roughly runs north to south from Ocean Street to Morrissey Boulevard, east to west from Water Street to the beach. Much of that territory is better known as the Seabright neighborhood, however. “Midtown” is most recently used to describe the budding entertainment district centered on Soquel Avenue (Bedford estimates it runs “from the Buttery to Staff of Life”). It includes popular restaurants like Lillian’s Italian Kitchen, Akira Sushi, Vivas Mexican Food, Real Thai Kitchen, Oyunaa’s Mongolian

BY STEVE PALOPOLI

Cuisine, and many more, as well as grocery stores like Shopper’s Corner and Staff of Life, and interesting shopping spots like Synergy Organic Clothing and Childish. The fact that there’s plentiful parking and everything is within walking distance has added to its appeal. “We have a symbiotic thing,” says Bedford of Midtown businesses. Restaurant owners will sometimes even ask him how big particular Rio shows are going to be, in order to help plan their staffing, he says. But the most intricate symbiosis in the Midtown district definitely exists between the Rio and the Crepe Place, an institution on the local dining scene that has also become known for its almost nightly live music. They’re less than a block apart, and while the Rio tends to book bigger musicians like Beck and Andrew Bird, the much smaller Crepe Place has more underground lineups—it has offered audiences the chance to see bands like the Lumineers and California Honeydrops before they got huge. Many Rio events have their after-party at the Crepe Place, and some music fans will even go to see a show at the Rio and then catch another band later at the Crepe Place the same night. The Rio staff can often be found at the Crepe Place, too, as it has lunch and dinner menus and a full bar. “We love the Rio, and they love us,” says Crepe Place co-owner Adam Bergeron. “I feel a real kinship with them.” He and his business partner Eric Gifford

took over the restaurant almost a decade ago, about the time he became aware of the idea of Midtown. “I never heard ‘Midtown’ in the ’90s,” Bergeron says of when he previously lived in Santa Cruz. “But when I came back in 2006, it was like ‘This is Midtown.’ The surf community has thought of it as that for I don’t know how long. In the last five years, it’s caught a lot more of a current. I think it’s sort of permanently planted in the consciousness of the town now.” One of the defining moments was when Zac Creager opened the Midtown Café on Soquel Avenue in 2014, making it the first business to claim the area in its name. “He was the first one to put in the flag,” says Bedford. Another was when the Santa Cruz Film Festival moved to Midtown in 2013, utilizing venues like the Rio and the Pacific Arts Complex. They returned last year, and in April 2015, TEDx Santa Cruz migrated to Midtown and sold out the Rio. “I’d been trying to get TEDx to move to the Rio for years,” says veteran SCFF organizer Elizabeth Gummere. Both groups emphasized the Midtown district at their events, encouraging participants to take advantage of having so many social spots within walking distance; TEDx hosted a “Midtown mingle” on the day of the event. “Midtown lends itself to that sort of thing,” says Gummere. “The business owners are amazing. We got a lot of positive feedback.” 2015 | GTWEEKLY.COM | SANTACRUZ.COM | VISITOR GUIDE

Shaking Up the Scene The Santa Cruz Food Lounge brings a unique new concept to the local dining landscape

BY BRAD KAVA

S

anta Cruz has long been on the cutting edge of food trends—we had lattes, organic juice and Asian fusion in the ’70s—but its latest culinary experiment may be the boldest yet. The Santa Cruz Food Lounge is a smorgasbord of chefs and concepts, including Chinese dumplings, comfort food, chicken and waffles, locally caught fish, and gourmet chocolate drinks. Food Lounge owner Andrea Mollenauer this year won a Nextie award, which celebrates businesses and people who are creating the next big thing, for her new eatery concept. Basically, she’s making the Food Lounge at 1001 Center St. into a different restaurant every night, as well as a think tank for chefs to try out new concepts. Mortal Dumpling specializes in dim sum and serves Monday nights. Ty’s Eatery has modern takes on comfort food and does dinners Wednesdays and Sunday brunch. Fogline Farms serves meat it has raised and barbecued. Ocean2Table serves locally caught fish; La Marea

specializes in ceviche and oysters; and the Mutari Chocolate House and Factory, which is open every day, treats chocolate the way Italian coffee shops treat roasted beans. It serves the “richest and most authentic” hot chocolate possible, with locally roasted chocolate beans and techniques learned from the Ngobe natives in Panama. There’s also Kickin’ Chicken, which makes chicken and waffles for delivery or events.

The constant change is what keeps it interesting for Mollenauer, a 35-year-old Montreal native who used to own a cooking school in Santa Cruz and now hosts what is an informal university of food, a place where chefs can be bold and artistic for a clientele that appreciates it. Prices are reasonable, with most meals less than $20. There’s also a panoply of local beer and wine. Like an old-fashioned salon, where people exchange culture and ideas, the Lounge has music, poetry and specialty parties and events. The best place to keep track of it all is the Santa Cruz Food Lounge Facebook page—or to drop in. Located just a couple of blocks off of Santa Cruz’s main street, it’s on its way to becoming destination dining for both locals and visitors. “There’s no walk-by traffic,” says Mollenauer. “But I think if you give people good food and dynamic events, they will show up.” The Santa Cruz Food Lounge is located at 1001 Center St. in Santa Cruz; go to scfoodlounge.com for more info.

GIANT DIPPER

Oh, good old trusty Sky Glider, with that one cart with the caveman guy in it, just chilling out. Unlike all the other rides on this list, this isn’t a thrill ride, just a nice slow people mover from one end of the park to the other—in the sky, and with your feet dangling in the air. It’s a great way to get an overview (literally) of the park at the beginning of the day, or to take a breather between roller coasters.

When planning the Boardwalk’s newest ride (it debuted in October 2013), park masterminds knew they needed something extra special to get thrill chasers talking. They found it with the Undertow, North America’s only spinning roller coaster—the top of the coaster spins differently than the bottom section attached to the track. It’s unpredictable, too, as the coaster spins differently every time out, depending on the weight and placement of its riders.

It may not seem like much—a pirate ship swinging back and forth—but it gets both high and fast. For a bonus scare, choose a seat at either one of the far ends. Unlike at other parks, the pirate ship just has a single bar holding you in place instead of a full-on harness. That just gets your heart racing even more. Don’t worry, though, you’re safe. Not that many people even fall out!

T

he Beach Boardwalk is as synonymous with Santa Cruz as well, anything, even surfing. Constructed in 1907, it’s not only the oldest still-standing amusement park in California, it’s also one of the few beachside parks left on the West Coast. And how can you beat the combination of sun, beach, games, rides and fried Twinkies? Throughout the park’s existence, rides have come and gone, but which are the most popular ones now? We did some digging through Boardwalk stats to find the Top Five.

Just about every park has its own version of the log ride. It’s a classic set-up: Get in a log boat, float along on the track for a while, steep climb, and then before you know it, there’s a heart-pounding drop and …. splashdown! You’re soaked. The Boardwalk’s Logger’s Revenge was constructed in the late ’70s, and has a nice sawmill ambience as it winds along. Just when you get comfortable, though, you find out how heart-pounding this particular drop really is.

Still the champ. The Giant Dipper is by far the most famous ride at the park. In fact, it’s one of the most famous roller coasters in the world. This old-school wooden coaster, built in 1924, gets up to 55 miles per hour, but that doesn’t begin to describe the experience. It’s got some of the best dips you’ll ever experience in an amusement park. As of 2012, it’s estimated that over 60 million people have taken a ride on the Giant Dipper, possibly with their hands in the air like they just don’t care.
