Not all fi tness watches are created equal. Metropol’s gadget guy Ian Knott looks at Suunto’s impressive fl agship model, the 9 Peak.

If I were a betting man, it’d be a fairly safe wager that as you are reading this you are either wearing, or at least own, a fi tness watch of some sort.

There would also be good odds that your watch is a Samsung Galaxy Gear, Apple Watch, Fitbit or perhaps a Huawei or Garmin.

Few, especially in New Zealand would have considered, or even heard of, Suunto as a brand, but if you’re serious about your fi tness tracking and outdoor pursuits then it’s a brand you should defi nitely be looking at for your next purchase.

Made in Finland, their fl agship model, the Suunto 9 Peak is the watch you need if you want to dial right into your heart rate, optimum weightloss zones and blood oxygen levels, no matter what activity or sport you’re involved in.

The 9 Peak recognises 80 di erent sports and training activities, so unless you’re into some obscure activity such as cheese rolling, then you’ll be able to pick an accurate depiction and track all the important readings.

It was great to be able to choose tennis, for example, rather than a generic crosstraining or outdoor mode.

Speaking of outdoors, the 9 Peak has you covered if going bush is your thing. With built-in GPS, compass, barometric altometer, 100m waterproofi ng and being built tough as nails, this is the digital companion you need.

Of course the watch still does the basics such as displaying phone notifi cations and calls, and controlling music etc. But if pretty graphics and watch faces are what you’re about, then the 9 Peak is not for you. Suunto keeps things clean and simple, with a small selection of face displays designed to deliver information rather than match your outfi t.

With normal (non-GPS) everyday usage, the battery life is superb, boasting a full seven days. So if you’re serious about your fi tness, then consider the Suunto 9 Peak. It’s like a personal trainer on your wrist.

A unique exhibition celebrates an important perspective, while enhancing the experience for patients at a leading ophthalmology practice in Christchurch.

The arrival of works by photographic artist Conor Clarke at their Kilmore Street premises is another way Southern Eye Specialists (SES) is looking after patients and championing eye care. The exhibition, As far as the eye can reach, is being held in conjunction with Jonathan Smart Gallery. Conor worked with the blind and low vision community, inviting participants to describe a landscape from memory before recreating the text in a series of large, touchable photographs. Each remembered landscape incorporates braille to provide a multi-sensory experience for viewers. For exhibition organiser Dr Jim Borthwick, the event provides the perfect combination between the SES focus on patient care and his passion and support for local artists. “I believe this is the fi rst exhibition to be undertaken in an ophthalmology practice in New Zealand,” says Dr Borthwick. “It was also an important opportunity for us to support Blind Low Vision NZ, Glaucoma NZ and Macular Degeneration NZ, and a percentage of the proceeds from sales will go to these charities.” The reception area is a specifi c focus at SES, with patients often needing to spend time there while undertaking di erent tests and procedures. “The patient experience is so vital to get right,” he adds. “We’ve invested in making these spaces as warm and inviting as possible with a well-designed space, comfortable seating and, of course, plenty of beautiful artwork.”
