NZ’s ‘Silent Army’ Their service in New Zealand and overseas is often overshadowed by that of our war heroes, but historian and author Renée Hollis is looking to change that.

In the wake of Anzac Day, a call has gone out for untold stories After the success of her book Voices of World War II: New Zealanders Share of the silent sacrifi ce made by New Zealand women during Their Stories, she is now working on a World War II. social history project focusing on the experiences of New Zealand women during World War II. This involves immersing herself in letters and diaries from women who helped keep the home fi res burning or served overseas. “I am looking for stories that have never been shared before, that will give the reader a real insight into what women’s lives were really like during World War II,” she says. Sources could include those who can recall childhood memories of wartime, mothers raising children while their husbands were fi ghting overseas, volunteers, land girls, women who worked in the factories as well as the Red Cross, the Women’s Auxiliary Army Corps, the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, and the Women’s Royal Naval Service. Indie folk trio, Albi & The Wolves are coming to coming to Canterbury, thanks to Arts On Tour NZ.

Chris Dent, the proud albino frontman Albi, Pascal Roggen and Michael Young have crafted a stage show that’s brimming with energy and moments to pause for refl ection. The trio has a huge sound that is simply created by an acoustic guitar, electric violin, double bass and their three voices.

Since 2014 they have gone from strength to strength touring in Australia, New Zealand and Rarotonga and in 2018 they took home the Best Folk Artist Award at the NZVMA’s.

What makes the band special is the sense of community that follows them everywhere they go - whether it’s connection through dance, laughter, or singing audiences feel radiant after shows and keep coming back for more.
