Getting to the guts of it

Cutting edge research plays a vital role in today’s medical fi eld, determining which treatments work best, new treatments, and ensuring existing treatments are used in the best possible ways.

Aside from diagnosing diseases and health problems, medical research provides insights that give us hope that there is a chance to lessen the impact of health problems, such as diabetes, heart disease, gut problems, bowel and other cancers.

One such researcher locally is Pacifi c Radiology, a key provider of diagnostic and interventional procedures including X-rays, ultra sound imaging, MRI, CT and bone density scans. New Zealand’s largest private radiology provider with 47 clinics nationwide, Pacifi c Radiology is also heavily involved in advancing medical research through collaborative partnerships, or as they say, “investing in research that matters”.

Previous research partnerships have looked at the long-term impact of cannabis use on the ageing brain, fi nding a safe and a ordable remedy for constipation and ways to mitigate the e ects of concussion on rugby players.

Its latest research, in association with the Gut Foundation, is examining how gut symptoms are investigated and diagnosed in the South Island. The results will be used internationally to improve the outcomes of people with gut symptoms of conditions such as colorectal cancer, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis and coeliac disease.

Gut Foundation General Manager Margaret Fitzgerald explains: “We know that people sometimes put o getting symptoms of bowel/gut disease investigated and that this can cause delays in diagnosis and treatment.” “More understanding is needed about people’s knowledge of bowel/gut symptoms, and about what happens when people seek care for their symptoms. This study is designed to investigate these knowledge gaps.”

We know that people Ms Fitzgerald adds that it is sometimes put off getting organisations such as Pacifi c Radiology which understand that the funding/symptoms of bowel/gut disease supporting of medical research investigated and that this can ignites real change and ultimately is cause delays in diagnosis and a selfl ess gift to future generations. “Our partnership on this research will treatment enable us to educate more people about the diagnostic options that are available to them. With waiting lists for colonoscopy jammed, the alterative CT colonography from Pacifi c Radiology can provide people with peace of mind or acceleration to appropriate medical intervention.” Dr Jeremy Sharr, Chief Radiologist at Pacifi c Radiology says, “Projects such as this will play a signifi cant role in advancing the health and wellbeing of our community now and in the future and we are delighted to be able to be involved. It is indeed research that matters.”

If you’re after some extra length or volume for your next big event, why not think about Great Lengths tape in extensions? Quick and relatively low maintenance, tape-in extensions are perfect for short-to-medium term use.

Tape-in extensions are installed by sandwiching thin sections of hair between two extension pieces, using a medical-grade adhesive strip. The strip is designed to lay fl at against the scalp, so it does not appear bulky, and when installed by a certifi ed extension professional, will blend well with your natural hair. The maintenance of tape extensions is relatively straightforward, and the tapes will need to be reinstalled every six to eight weeks.

For clients looking for a more long-term option, we recommend the keratin-bonded extensions. These use keratin (the building block of human hair) to attach to

Long and luscious the hair shaft, and are incredibly natural-looking. The keratin bonds fl ex, move, and swell with the natural hair, making them much more gentle on the scalp than other long-term extensions options. All Great Lengths extensions are made from 100% sustainably sourced, traceable human hair that is incredibly high quality. They come in a range of lengths, textures, and colours, so there really is something to suit most hair types. For more information about hair extensions, make an appointment for a consultation with our extensions specialist.
