An organised home creates a calmer and more inviting environment.
Having functional storage throughout your home will help keep things in their rightful place. The right kind of storage will look di erent in every home and can work into the design of a room depending on materials and colourways.
Wooden cabinetry and cupboards are classic and simple, and extremely practical for storing things out of the way. They are also good in hallways and tight spaces, as they can nicely sit up against a wall and not take up too much space.
Baskets are a nice way to store loose bits and pieces and stops these creating clutter, such as shoes, dog leads or umbrellas. Kept by the front door and this becomes a functional and stylish entrance accessory.

A warm welcome
Stepping into a stunning hallway sets the tone for what’s in store throughout the rest of a house. Make a beautiful first impression with a warm and welcoming wall colour.
This hallway has been given a creative touch with Resene FX Paint Effects medium coloured with Resene Half Alabaster. Resene FX Paint Effects is a semi-transparent product, that you add colour to. By way of different application techniques, such as sponging or ragrolling, it creates a unique effect on your walls. This is particularly handy if you have a few marks that you want to cover!
Bring in the darker, plain colour of Resene Explorer on your side wall, echoing it in accents such as your desk and vases or bowls. Paint a pattern in a subtle light colour on the floor, such as the one here that mimics pebbles. Not only will this create a sense of drama, but also encourage the eye to look around the room.
If you’re worried that the space is too small or doesn’t receive enough light from a small window, a mirror will bounce what light there is, creating a greater sense of space. There may not be much floor area, but there is room above, so reach up and use this vertical space with a free-standing coat stand. Stylish and practical, it can be coated in Resene Explorer to provide colour continuity as well as providing a handy storage solution for coats and bags. ‘Tiled’ background in Resene Midwinter Mist with ‘grout’ in Resene Stack, A4 drawdown paint swatches in (from left to right) Resene Explorer, Resene French Grey, Resene Stack, Resene Jumbo and Resene Arrowroot, candlestick in Resene Jumbo, finial in Resene Armadillo, small vase in Resene French Grey, tall vase in Resene Stack with stripes in Resene French Grey, lidded container in Resene Explorer and picture frame in Resene Arrowroot.

The Clocks Bookshop
Not long ago many predicted the end of books. But during the 18 months that The Clocks Bookshop has been open, book sales have boomed and at least three other independent booksellers have opened their doors in the South Island.
The Clocks has more than doubled the number of books it was carrying when it opened. It still specialises in children’s books, (classics such as Harry the Dirty Dog and The Nickel Nackle Tree, still sell well), along with cookbooks – (Romanian, Baltic or Burmese recipes anyone?), and crime books (Donna Leon, Peter Lovesey and 70+ Agatha Christie titles). But now the non-fi ction and general fi ction shelves are also overfl owing with titles that you may not see in the mass market stores.
“What an independent bookshop can o er is discovery,” says The Clocks Bookshop’s owner, Ann Reeves. “That chance to fi nd, via our personally curated selection, words or pictures you may very well fall in love with.” Ann adds of the Elmwood Village site. “We are fortunate to be here and we have such a fantastic customer base. So many people come in and say, ‘How are you going? It’s so good to have you here. Please stay.’” And they defi nitely are not going anywhere.

Dreaming of a great kitchen
Almost 10 years ago, Adrian Kay started his own Dream Doors Kitchens franchise in 2012.
Since then, Adrian and his tightly knit team of skilled tradesmen have earned a sterling reputation for bringing a new lease of life to one of the most lived-in areas of your house.
That reputation has earned him and the team the distinction of being Dream Doors Kitchen Franchisee of the year consecutively since 2013 and being awarded the very prestigious Westpac Franchise Association of New Zealand award for ‘Franchisee of the Year’ in 2017.
These accolades are the result of hard work, professionalism and attention to detail, whether it’s building a new kitchen, or renovating an existing one. The exiting cabinetry is left in place as part of Dream Doors’ ethos of sustainability, while the doors, drawers, benchtops, handles, sinks, taps and other areas of one of your home’s biggest assets all can be brought up to date.
Adrian will sit down with you and go through the process step by step, ensuring you know that nothing is overlooked or corners cut to get your kitchen looking and feeling just how you dreamed it would.
After nearly a decade, Adrian and the team are just getting started.
You will fi nd them at 10a/1 Stark Drive, Wigram, phone 03 338 1081, or email adrian@dreamdoors.co.nz.

Take a Superhome tour
The Superhome movement tours are back for 2021. Tour organisers are excited to showcase several future proofed Superhomes, designed and built to be environmentally aware and in harmony with nature. Warmer in winter and easier to heat for less cost.
Superhome co-founder and designer Bob Burnett says the tours are a chance to visit some of the country’s most beautiful, sustainable, healthy Superhomes.
“Join us for an inspiring day of fun and discovery with expert commentary from owners, designers, builders, and project participants. Hear about what makes a home healthy for people and the planet. Ask the owners questions about what it’s like to live in a Superhome and the process of creating one.
“The Superhome movement provides the vehicle for educating residents on what really makes a healthy home. As a notfor-profit organisation, we are not selling specific systems and products. We advocate for what works, based on proven science. There is no greenwash or smoke and mirrors. Just passionate people with the desire to improve the way society lives.”
Something special happens when you take a tour of exemplary Superhomes, he says. “There is a superb level of interaction, engagement and positive energy.”
Experiencing the warmth and quality of the homes, meeting the experts and owners, and discussing innovative ideas that can inform your own project, is a wonderful and immensely valuable experience, Bob adds.
The following pages feature just three of the magnificent Superhomes on this year’s tour – to view them all and to book your ticket visit www.superhome.co.nz
Every ticket includes a healthy home design guide and Superhome tour book; a wealth of resources for anyone interested in the design of Superhomes.
