Natural fi bres are animal or plant-based and include cotton, linen, wool, leather, silk and hemp. Generally, natural fi bres are more sustainable than artifi cial fi bres, as well as more durable. Here is a breakdown of a few favourites. Linen is a plant-based fi bre, that comes from the fl ax plant and softens over time. The fabric is breathable, lightweight, absorbent, and durable.

Hemp

Similar to canvas in texture, hemp is a highly sustainable plant-based fi bre. The fabric is strong and has great water resistance.

Wool

An animal-based fi bre commonly from sheep but also other animals such as alpacas. Wool is durable and waterresistant due to the oil from the animal’s skin.

Cotton

The most used fabric in commercial design, cotton can be made into an array of products from couches to carpet. Cotton is strong, fl exible, and soft.
