Being the best they can BLOOM in the city

Poise, passion, precision. Lisa Carrington has paddled her way to becoming New Zealand’s most prolifi c Olympic medalist.

After winning her third gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics, her parents provided some sage advice to us all. As parents our children are the most precious things in our lives and we strive to provide them with the most nurturing environment we can. We all have di erent approaches to this, extending from the school of hard knocks approach all the way through to a more wrap around, risk averse, ‘bubble wrap’ approach. We, as parents, all fi t on that continuum somewhere, and may well dip our toes into di erent aspects of this as di erent situations arise with our children. A key question for me is whether we allow our children and students to take risks to enable them to fl ourish and thrive? Lisa’s Olympic tally is now fi ve gold and one bronze medal. Lisa’s proud parents were interviewed after she won her third gold medal in Tokyo. Her mother’s top tip was to encourage our children and students to ‘take the leap’ and be supportive so they are safe in taking risks which allow them to go on new adventures. Our pillar of focus this term is Fearlessly Aim High. I think it is important that as parents and educators, we also ‘take the leap’ and encourage and support our children and students to aim high, be risk takers and be the best they can be. Our city is at its most beautiful in spring and BLOOM highlights the lively streets, events and hospitality scene to showcase the city, attract visitors and stimulate spending.

BLOOM is held over the spring shoulder season, from September to November, to help bolster what can be a very challenging period – especially for retail and hospitality businesses.

Overall, the economy has performed well this year. Despite the loss of international visitors, we’ve seen increased spending from residents and domestic visitors and strong economic confi dence.

But recovery has been uneven across sectors and the volume of visitors is down signifi cantly on previous years.

Now is the perfect time to

BLOOM, the city’s spring festival of events, fashion, sport and music will breathe colour and vibrancy into Ōtautahi Christchurch.

invite your whānau and friends to visit, stay a few nights and take part in BLOOM.

From the iconic Riccarton Park and Addington Cup Weeks or New Zealand Agricultural Show, to epic tunes at Synthony, to Days of Ice which celebrates our Antarctic connections, to SCAPE Public Art with its quirky and cool creations – BLOOM will pack your calendar with things to do and see.

And then there is the city’s newest major event – The South Island Moon Festival which will be a light, food and music-fi lled celebration of Chinese and East Asian cultures centered around the notion of bringing family and friends together.

Come along and experience our brilliant little city in full BLOOM-mode.

Head to the hub Breaking down barriers

If you’re less than enthusiastic while stacking the dishwasher a er dinner tonight, spare a thought for the Ōtakaro team .

The launch of the Christchurch Invitation: Mahia te Aroha last month was a very moving event, for all who attended.

Members of the team have been rapidly unpacking, cleaning and storing almost 8500 wine glasses, 7500 teacups and matching saucers, and much more at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre, ahead of the fi rst events later this year. Over a three-week period, up to eight trucks a day will be arriving at the centre to deliver every item needed to host the fi nest events in the city. You may even spot the additional tra c from over the road at Tūranga, where you will fi nd our new interactive information station about New Zealand’s only purpose-built convention centre. The display features an augmented reality experience that will take you inside the facility before the doors even swing open. There’s also a detailed 3D model of the building and a sample braidedriver façade panel to give a greater appreciation of the intricate design. We know that while the vast majority of people believe Te Pae Christchurch will be of real benefi t to the city, far less of you feel you know much about the facility. What better way to rectify this than by putting everything you need to know on display in the neighbouring knowledge hub. It’ll be a far easier way to get an understanding of Te Pae Christchurch’s inner workings than drying the 9000 side plates being unpacked. Seven Gold Bravery Awards were presented by the Governor-General, Dame Patsy Reddy, in her role as patron of the Royal Humane Society of New Zealand. The fl ood of support, unity and compassion in response to the mosque attacks of March 15, 2019, is what the Christchurch Invitation seeks to keep alive.

Mahia te Aroha represents action motivated by compassion and is something we can all make part of our lives by spreading peace, sharing kai, reconnecting with others, and refl ecting.

There are simple acts that we can do every day.

Spreading peace can be as simple as saying something to make someone smile or helping someone with a problem.

My favourite is sharing kai. Food breaks down barriers. When we sit down with others, we can learn about who they are. Sharing ideas, asking questions and opening up to another world – that’s how barriers come down and friendships are forged.

Reconnecting could mean phoning someone you have not spoken to for a long time. It could also mean learning how to pronounce a person’s name correctly.

And refl ecting could be disconnecting from technology and walking in nature. Look around for things that bring you a sense of awe and wonder.

Take a minute to refl ect on what you could do. www.mahiatearoha.nz

Women taking on trades

Female Ara graduate and engineer Katie Thomas hopes to inspire more women to follow in her footsteps.

Trades are awesome,” she says. “One thing I enjoyed about getting into engineering is that the culture is really cool. It’s usually quite fun - the boys can go a little bit over the top, but it’s a hell of a good job in any of the trades.

“I meet lots of tradesmen all over the place - sparkies, plumbers - and everybody sort of gets along well. I also have a good sense of humour - that helps!” says Katie.

While female participation in New Zealand trades has increased, it has still not been enough to lift participation above 12 percent of the trades and support sta workforce. Within the New Zealand economy particularly, this means that women are not benefi ting equally from the current building boom or the associated activity that makes up such a signifi cant portion of the nations’ GDP.

Initiatives are currently underway to uncover the barriers that may be preventing more women studying trades. ‘Women In Trades’, is a threeyear research project jointly commissioned by the Ministry for Women and Ako Aotearoa. The project is designed to “increase the participation and success of women in construction and engineering related trades where they are traditionally under-represented.”

The research so far has found that the women surveyed cited fi ve primary obstacles to starting a career in trades, ranging from a lack of personal knowledge about the wheres and hows and of work experience in general; identifying employers who will take on women, the predominantly ‘male’ culture of the sector, and a lack of support for working women in the trades.

BCITO aims to have women making up 10 percent of its apprentices by 2025 and to have women fi lling 30 percent of construction trade jobs by 2040.
