EDITORIAL
Dear Friends, We are pleased to introduce this very first issue of The Emporium, the new annual catalogue and literary review of the St George Orthodox Information Service. SGOIS has been striving to serve the Church for the past 43 years and, during this time, much has changed. Back in 1970, in preinternet days, it was possible to reach people only through the limited scope of the printed medium and via the Post Office. Orthodox News was thus conceived as both the sole means of making available a catalogue of books and a variety of Orthodox information and news in the English language. Over the past four decades, however, the terrific growth of Orthodox publishing and the advent of the internet not only has seen a wealth of information on the Church becoming easily available, but the rise of e-commerce has also made sustaining a mail order business difficult with the spiralling costs of postage as well as international on-line competition. The Emporium is thus offered as a practical response to the changed and changing world in which SGOIS, still the UK's only Orthodox distribution company, finds itself. Through its pages we will print our full annual catalogue with a comprehensive list of the best Orthodox books from the leading publishing houses from around the world. For news about our latest stock items, as well as spiritual articles and notes and jottings about our church community in Mettingham, please take a look at our on-line Blog where we publish regular updates and our monthly Bulletin, Joy of All Who Sorrow. The publication of just a single catalogue each year will also give an opportunity to invest more energy and focus on our own publishing projects. With the birth of the Mettingham Orthodox Trust as a registered charity in 2012 and the blessing of SGOIS’ new head quarters at The College of our Lady of Mettingham, producing educational and liturgical materials is now a formal aim of the Trust. In 2013 we have made a start on this through the publication of our Akathist to St Botolph of Iken, as well as the publication of our Pomyannik for commemoration of the living and departed. Looking forward to 2014 we hope to make available further unpublished akathists and canons, together with pocket sized versions of the Prayer Book and the Divine Liturgy as well as a larger scale project to print the original Psalter of Father Lazarus (Moore). All these are offered to be of use to Orthodox parishes and bookstalls, at an affordable price and in an attractive format, as part of a continued service, rather than burden, to the Church. As you will notice, book reviews are an integral part of The Emporium and we will ensure that each annual issue will feature a full selection of reviews from our readership, presenting honest, critical and engaging feedback on some of the latest Orthodox titles in stock. We thus hope you enjoy browsing through this first issue, and as ever welcome your comments and suggestions. E

TRANSITUS BEATI FURSEI: A Translation of the 8th Century Manuscript Life of Saint Fursey translated by Oliver Rackham Paperback (illustrated) 68pp £12.50
of St Fursey handily included at the end of the book, is more useful, as it does fill in some plausible biographical gaps in the Transitus, suggesting, for example, that his motivation for coming to East Anglia was as part of a greater pilgrimage to Rome.
T
he translation of the Passage of Blessed Fursey by the Fursey Pilgrims will prove an invaluable aid in making the life of this Irish ascetic, missionary and “pilgrim for Christ” better known. For, not only was St Fursey the first recorded Irish missionary in Anglo-Saxon England, before St Aidan had even taken a step on Holy Island, but his wondrous visions are recognised as the earliest Christian visionary literature in the West, and as one of the most important inspirations behind Dante’s epic poem La Divina Commedia.
Thus whilst the biographical framework surrounding the visions in the Transitus might be described as somewhat sketchy, this is more than made up for by the vivid detail and dramatic depth with which St Fursey’s visions (or what we might call today “near-death experiences”) are narrated - and it was precisely these accounts which must have set Dante’s imagination racing. There are though no Boschian vignettes with tridents and tongs, instead the demons are more convincingly portrayed as perverse theologians, coldly quoting Scripture chapter and verse in order to claim St Fursey’s soul. The Transitus’ depiction of the role of the angels here is especially moving as, at every stage, they are tirelessly involved in defending Fursey’s powerless and mute soul from the vicious accusations of the demons, showing in the process, their brotherly love for the whole human creation and that, after death, the soul is dependent on the charity of the saints, angels and the faithful. It is thus ultimately only in this finite world that we can do anything of eternal value or harm - it is only in this world that we can repent.
The text has been professionally produced by Oliver Rackham of Cambridge University, and the serious student of hagiography will have plenty to be grateful to the Professor for, including the juxtaposition of the original Latin text against his English translation (with all the manuscript omissions, errors and markings carefully highlighted) and his skilful interpolation of the parallel passages in Bede’s Ecclesiastical History concerning St Fursey into his translation. As a Life of the saint, however, the Transitus is often frustratingly, even teasingly, short on detail. We are not told the names of his parents, where he was born and brought up, how old he was when he left home and built a monastery. We are not told where he journeyed and preached throughout Ireland, nor are we told how or why he ended up coming to East Anglia, and – most frustratingly of all - where exactly he built his monastery beyond the vague reference to “a certain castle, pleasantly near unto both woods and sea”. In fact, for biographical detail and psychological insight, the shorter and later Virtues
To finish with some more critical considerations, I wonder whether the decision to reproduce the Latin alongside the English, with all the palaeographical details, may be a little off-putting and too academically orientated for non-specialist readers. Moreover, although Rackham’s attempts to mirror the alliteration of the original is mostly effective in conveying the rhetorical style of the text, his penchant for placing the literal over the sensible does lead to some awkward and bizarre passages; such as the demonic similitude “their
3
heads did swell into the likeness of a casserole (caccabus)”, when “cooking-pot” may have been both more accurate and elegant? However, despite these minor points, this is an academically robust start in bringing St Fursey back from the darkness of hagiographical obscurity, allowing us both a precious foretaste, and salutary warning, of the transitus which awaits us all.
references, but these are not off-putting to a nonGreek reader. The messages he conveys are relevant to all Orthodox Christians today. My favourite chapter is entitled ‘The Congregation’. In this chapter the bishop warns us about unbelievers and also the impious behaviour of many supposed believers. Similarly, he uses the chapter about the Small Entrance to tell us about angels – the angels ministering with us at the Divine Liturgy.
Mark Tattum-Smith
I have two negative comments about the book. After reading a few chapters, I realised that the author was still talking about the Great Litany. There are in fact over 100 pages dedicated to the Great Litany. This is a little excessive. Then there is a rather strange chapter entitled ‘Prophecies’. Old Testament readings have not featured in the daily Byzantine liturgy for over a thousand years, so this chapter is rather incongruous. In the context of Greek parishes nowadays, the same comment could be made about the chapter entitled ‘The Beatitudes’ as these are rarely sung outside of monasteries. So this chapter does not relate to the Liturgy as experienced by a Greek man in the pew although it would be no surprise to a Russian reader.
On The Divine Liturgy (Volume 1) by Bishop Augoustinos (Kantiotes) of Florina Paperback, 274pp £12.95 etropolitan Augoustinos of Florina was, until his death in 2010, a champion of a traditional approach to the practice of Greek Orthodox Christianity. Contrary to popular belief, ‘traditionalists’ do not put all their energies into writing fiery denunciations of their opponents. Instead, they live the Orthodox Christian Tradition and witness to it as appropriate to their role in society. As part of his work as a bishop, Metropolitan Augoustinos produced a series of ‘Sunday leaflets’.
M
These leaflets were aimed not at scholars but at the average person in the pew who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the Divine Liturgy. These leaflets have been gathered together into this delightful book. The sixty-one very short chapters of volume 1 deal with the Liturgy, from the preparation to the litanies after the Gospel. In order to benefit from the book, one needs to know the text of the Liturgy or, preferably, have a copy of it to hand while reading this book.
This book is well worth the investment of £12.95 and is a perfect present for anyone whose only opportunity to read a book is short bus journeys. I look forward to reading volume 2.
The book is not a technical manual, but it does give simple explanations of some things which the average layman may not understand, such as the preparation before the Liturgy. Above all, the book is a pious reflection on the Liturgy. On pages 42-43 Metropolitan Augoustinos tells a very moving anecdote in order to explain why we constantly sing ‘Lord, have mercy’.
Nicholas Price
It is impossible to forget that he was writing for a Greek audience due to numerous cultural

filtering through of Western values such as religious liberty which this led to. Admiration turned to disdain and revulsion, however, following the open rejection of traditional (Christian) values in the wake of the Sexual Revolution of the late 1960s. Additionally, as (secular) Arab nationalism proved an ultimate failure, Islamic fundamentalism (i.e. Salafists, the Muslim Brotherhood, jihadists, etc) proved revitalised, providing simplistic solutions such as - ‘Islam is the answer’.
Crucified Again: Exposing Islam’s New War on Christians by Raymond Ibrahim Hardback (illustrated), 322pp £15.75 eaders attuned to current events will be aware of recent attacks by Muslim extremists in such places as Pakistan, Syria, Iraq, Kenya, and Nigeria. Horrified though we may be, all too often we are also numb to this revulsion as the media quickly turns to other news. As such, persecution and violence against Christians are often perceived only in isolation and not understood as a wider phenomenon. It is to this oversight that Raymond Ibrahim’s new book addresses, systematically describing hundreds of attacks against Christians in the Muslim world over the past few years alone.
R
Ibrahim will no doubt face critics accusing him of ‘Islamophobism’. Whilst he clearly has an agenda – to document attacks against Christians in the Islamic world – the sheer volume of organised attacks against Christian individuals, shops, homes, churches, and monasteries, suggests that there is something to his argument. The author’s fluency in Arabic has also allowed him to research news events directly from the Arabic sources, examples of persecution all too often neglected by the Western media. Had he waited another year to publish, his book would undoubtedly be much longer. Ibrahim argues that it is precisely because this “Golden Age” of religious tolerance was so close to our own times that our understanding of the traditional treatment of Christians in the Islamic world is distorted.
Ibrahim divides the book into five sections examining the legal position of Christianity within Islam, and then proceeds to the active opposition against Christian institutions, worship, thought and freedom found within Islamic societies. He also describes the active (or neglectful) role of Muslim governments and the ‘Muslim mob’, while concluding with a condemnation of Western academics, media, and politicians for their neglect, whitewashing, and enabling of modern persecution. In the face of common assumptions propounded by Western liberals in recent decades, Ibrahim argues that the Colonial and Post-Colonial periods (ca. 1850-1950) were overwhelmingly a Christian ‘Golden Age’ in the Arabic-speaking Middle East, in which a spirit of unique tolerance existed (neglecting the Druze massacre of Greek Orthodox Christians in Damascus in 1860, or the genocide of Armenians and Syrian Orthodox in Turkey around the First World War) due to Muslim admiration for the power and might of the proud colonial powers - in ending the Ottoman Turkish empire - and the resultant
‘Thus many Westerners see the contemporary persecution of Christians by Muslims as the historical aberration, and they seek vainly to explain that violence away … remembering the relatively nonviolent Islam of just a few decades ago.’
This recent tolerant period was, however, the anomaly, writes Ibrahim, as we now contemplate the real possibility that Middle Eastern Christianity might well become extinct in our own lifetimes. Lord, have mercy. Dr Kenneth Scott Parker

As they take root in American soil, this chant will become an organic hybrid of different influences from our own folk melodies and harmonies, rooted in the traditions of our ancestors and drawing from the springs of the memorable melodies of the Carpatho-Rus and the timeless and other-worldly modalities of western Gregorian chant and it counterpart, Byzantine chant.
