CONTENTS Introduction/Preface

Note from the Authors

X

CHAPTER 1: Why Did I Do That?

X

How you can learn to have better relationships in the future by looking at your relationships from the past. Everything from early family life to your last bad date.

CHAPTER 2: The Naked Truth About Dating

XX

XX

There may have been chemistry, but will there be a second date? Who should call whom? How to know whether to invest more emotional capital in the relationship or cut your losses and move on.

Dr. Paula’s Advice for Women:

What to Do—and What Not to Do —on a First Date

1.

Let’s admit it, many of you will have searched Google for the person before the first date. While this may be common, it is not a good idea to mention it on the first date. If he tells you where he works don’t say, “I know, I love the tie you wore to the holiday party.” Googling someone after the date for confirmation of what they told you isn’t necessarily a bad idea.

2.

Don’t be hungry. Hunger is so primitive and when we feel hungry it is hard to focus on anything else. The better you feel, the better your date will go.

3.

Don’t order a salad if you don’t really like salads.

4.

Don’t overdo the caffeine. Jittery is not a good thing to be on a first date. When people are jittery they can seem like they are lying, nervous, or restless. Restlessness can be interpreted as being rushed and disinterested.

5.

Don’t make a snap judgment: unless you get a serious case of the creeps; give him another shot. Anyone can have a bad day.

6.

Do let him know how it went at the end of the date but be brief. If you’d like to see him again, let him know that you had a great time and would like to see him again.

7.

Don’t talk about your ex (or ask him about his).

8.

Don’t wear a heavy perfume (or don’t wear perfume at all).

9.

I know this may be a very basic thing, but don’t talk about future plans together on a first date.

10. Do put your phone on vibrate and unless it is an emergency don’t pick up. If you let it ring, it sends the message “there is no where I’d rather be than here, in this moment, with you.”

2

XX

How early should you have sex in a relationship? What if he’s interested and she wants to wait? Can porn save a relationship? Learning what can go right or wrong in the bedroom — and why.

XX

How to deal with issues of control, jealousy, and differences in household habits. Learning the fine art of resolving conflicts so you make love not war.

CHAPTER 6: Money Matters: Risks and Rewards

XXX

Money is a hot-button issue — the saver vs. the spender, the tightwad vs. the spendthrift — resulting in mistrust and resentment. Once a couple understands that these arguments often arise out of feelings related to entirely different concerns, the door opens for resolution and peace.

XXX

CHAPTER 5: Problem Solving

Prescriptive advice on all the dos and don’ts you need to know about going on a first date — from how asking too many questions can kill a date to what to wear and how much to disclose about yourself early on.

CHAPTER 3: Move Forward or Move On? (The Second Date and Beyond)

CHAPTER 4: Sex & Intimacy

CHAPTER 7: Making a Commitment

On living together, making plans for the long term, and how to tell if you’re commitment-phobic.

Why Does He Do That? Why Does She Do That? Two Experts Reveal What You Need to Know About Yourself and the Opposite Sex to Succeed at Finding Love by Dr. Paula Bloom and Dr. Reef Karim

“I can’t wait to read this book!” – Victoria Stilwell, author and host of the hit TV show, It’s Me or the Dog

What women don’t know about men and what men don’t know about women could fill a book. And Why Does He Do That? Why Does She Do That? is that book. In a lively no-holds-barred style, noted relationship experts Dr. Reef Karim and Dr. Paula Bloom reveal what everyone really needs to know about the opposite sex. Two experts who have received major media attention: Dr. Paula Bloom has appeared on HLN's Nancy Grace, CNN, CNN International, CNN en Espanol, and on Dr. Sanjay Gupta's show on the CNN Accent Health network. Dr. Reef Karim has appeared on Oprah, Larry King Live, Anderson Cooper 360, The Today Show, Good Morning America, Dateline NBC, The Joy Behar Show, and Chelsea Lately. As a guest expert, he is interviewed on the DVD of The Bourne Identity and serves as a medical consultant to films and TV (Private Practice).

Dr. Reef Some guys need help to get beyond their basic physical attraction to women. Not necessarily because they need to deny it, but because it’s important to learn to recognize it for what it is and begin to look at other attributes beyond looks and sex appeal. I often ask my clients to name their big seven — the seven points that really interest them about a woman, anything from a sense of humor to athletic ability. By writing the attributes down, they can look at what they appreciate besides visual appearance. The seven points will be different for every person. Here are a number of points that my clients have come up with when identifying the attributes that appeal to them most: Athletic ability Sense of humor Intellect Compassion Nurturing

A kitchen workhorse, the halogen oven does almost everything in one pot that it normally takes a conventional oven, microwave, stove, and barbecue grill to accomplish. It can bake, broil, sauté, steam, fry, and grill — and it will do it better. All you have to do is plug it into a normal household electrical socket and you are ready to go. It’s that easy.

Asian-Spiced Chicken Wings Serve with a salad for a light lunch, or go all out and grab a cold beer with hot wings while watching the game.

100 recipes for the ultimate small appliance, it makes every meal faster, healthier, greener. You can put a frozen roast, turkey, or pork chops right in the oven and begin cooking. No defrosting required.

Makes 4–6 servings

With some kitchen shears, snip off the tips of the chicken wings, and halve the wings at the joint. If desired, remove as much skin as you can.

In a large bowl, mix together the minced garlic, salt, soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey, sesame oil, and cayenne pepper. Add the chicken to the bowl, and turn to coat all over. Season with plenty of freshly ground black pepper, and if you have time, leave to marinade for 1 hour in the refrigerator.

Transfer the chicken wings to the round tray, and cook on the high rack at 450°F for 10 minutes, stirring every 2–3 minutes. Turn the temperature down to 400°F, and cook for a further 10–15 minutes, or until cooked through, stirring half way through cooking time. Remove from the oven and stir in the green onion and sesame seeds. Serve immediately.

Fox & Friends Praise for My First Ladies:

Behind the Scenes with First Ladies Michelle Obama, Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton, Barbara Bush, Nancy Reagan, and Rosalynn Carter

“The adventure started when (author Nancy) Clarke volunteered during Rosalynn Carter's term; then was hired at about the time Nancy Reagan came to Washington and became chief floral designer halfway through the Reagans' eight years. During this time she worked with Barbara and Laura Bush, Hillary Clinton and briefly with Michelle Obama. According to Clarke, the White House is a museum, and having fresh flowers or plants around is decorative, and they warm up the space. It feels more comfortable rather than so museum-like.” — Deborah Donovan, The Daily Herald, October 2011 "This is an enjoyable peek behind the scenes for those who can't get enough of our First Families." —Library Journal, July 2011 "Nancy's stories of life in the White House are an interesting and rare look into domestic life in America's most prestigious household." —ForeWord Reviews, September 2011 "As the chief floral designer at the White House, Nancy Clarke had one of the most interesting jobs in the country. For over 30 years, she designed everything from simple bud vases for the First Lady's nightstand to elaborate arrangements for state dinners and galas." —The Huffington Post, May 2011

Guide to the Writing Life

Praise for The Literary Ladies' Guide to the Writing Life:

“I copied the title of the book and ordered it from our local Maine Coast Bookshop when we arrived. From the moment I opened the first page, I was enchanted. Here, in personal account after personal account, I found the inspirational and practical words of Louisa May Alcott, Jane Austen, Charlotte Bronte, Willa Cather, Edna Ferber, Madeleine L'Engle, Lucy Maude Montgomery, Anais Nin, George Sand, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Edith Wharton, and Virginia Woolf. This book is not only about the creative process, but also matters of business. I loved every insight, every hurdle the authors faced. I felt this humanized writers in a way I have never experienced.” — Sharon Lovejoy Blog, September 2011 The Literary Ladies’ Guide to the Writing Life display Item# DSLITLAD • Free with order of 5 • 8½" W x 7" D x 6¾"

The authors clearly love to cook and they know how to write. The ingredients are, for the most part, straightforward items that you already should have (or should keep!) in your pantry.” — CouponistaQueen.blogspot.com, October 2011

The Big Book of Barbecue Side Dishes

Grilling for All Seasons

Author, television host, and barbecue guru Rick Browne has traveled the world in search of the best barbecue available, and he understands the importance and pleasure of barbecue’s accompanying side dishes. He presents more than 125 of the best he’s found — there’s something here for every taste and every outdoor gathering, including classic and contemporary dishes to make both on and off the grill. (Formerly published as The Big Book of Barbecue Sides.)

In Grilling for All Seasons, barbecue master Rick Browne gives readers dozens of reasons to get out of the kitchen and onto the deck for year-round grilling outdoors. He urges cooks to develop a new way of thinking about the grill — its use as a second kitchen and as a valuable backup at holidays and gatherings, for starters. Browne provides complete menus that complement each season and celebrate the bounty that each offers. The 80 recipes are robust, wholesome, and damn good!

1001 Golf Holes You Must Play Before You Die by Jeff Barr, General Editor

What makes a golf hole special, or indeed memorable? For some it is the thrill of a tricky shot over a deep ravine, or the beautiful scenery of an oceanside tee-off. For others it is the course’s rich tradition and the recollection of famous golfers who have played out their victories and frustrations there. Covering par-3, par-4, and par-5 holes — the hazardous, the scenic, and the celebrity-designed — 1001 Golf Holes is a magnificently illustrated guide that will encourage all golfers, whether professional or amateur, to discover the 1001 holes they simply must play.

Flower Spirits The Beauty that Blooms Within by Steven N. Meyers Steven Meyers creates beautiful flower and foliage imagery in an unusual way. By using X-rays instead of light, the textures, details, and shadows of his subjects appear with a new view that might otherwise be invisible to the eye. Michael Davis is the founder of Milestone Media and President and CEO of Motown Animation & Filmworks. He lives in L.A. How to Catch and Keep a Vampire A Step-by-Step Guide to Loving the Bad and the Beautiful by Diana Laurence In How to Catch and Keep a Vampire: A Step-by-Step Guide to Loving the Bad and the Beautiful, author Diana Laurence explores the romantic fascination we mortals have for the undead. Why do perfectly normal people fall for such sinister beings? And more importantly, what should we do about it when we do? Diana Laurence knows. With loads of personal experience to draw upon, Laurence does everything from explaining the attraction to blood-drinkers, to sharing what a red satin ribbon signifies to them. In this book, she has created a road map to show readers how a vampire relationship can be achieved and conducted in harmony with everyday existence. Diana Laurence is the author of the suspense thriller Looking on Darkness (2009), the popular vampire romance Bloodchained (2007), and the Souls’ Embrace (2004).

hotographer Rick Sammon embarked on a twelve-month adventure in 2003; his aim: to photograph live butterflies. His quest eventually led him to Michoacan, Mexico. Once there, Rick captured the migration of millions of Monarch butterflies as they began their annual exodus. A master of the digital camera, Sammon utilized his skills to capture the intimate yet dazzling shots of these beautiful winged creatures. He presents the viewer with images that bring to life their exquisite markings, gorgeous colors, and intriguing habitats.
