This design studio focused on the understanding of the Situationist Movement and the designrelated ideas, tools, and applications that it precipitated. Situationism postulates that human behavior is altered by the physical surroundings, the environment, rather than personal qualities. Based on this premise, the instructors challenged us with theoretical readings, design exercises, and creative role play in order to push our design thinking. The assignments were collaborative and participatory, challenging our notions of how the design of the spaces inluences human behavior.

Central Square, Cambridge, MA | One Week
The Central Square neighborhood is a bundle of tensions. From cultural and ethnic competition, to the friction between local residents and transient students and tourists, to the contrast between optimism and despair it is a micro-culural synapse. The ADCU’s purpose is to smooth these tnesions through participatory communication. The homeless and the wealthy tourists can leave their own mark reflective of their reality and culture. The Analog Diversity Communication Unit aims to be a mobile and occupiable inter-neighborhood message board and cultural appreciation center. The mobile unit is modular and easily transportable and made from rapidly renewable and recyclable materials - bamboo and steel. The mobile unit is the analog cousin of neighborhood Twitter. Residents and visitors can all post notes, photos, and small objects on the exterior of the unit. Through personified exchange of information, occupants become aware and appreciative of other cultures.

Decided to come see me afterall?
The generative idea for this installation was born out of mapping exercises of the BAC campus and the phrase “I wanted to give the back staircase some much needed love�. This idea calls to attention an already underutilized space and even underlines the transient nature of the school by its focus on a space initially intended as pure circulation. My partner Aaron Tetzlaf and I focused on manipulation of student circulation through use of visual cues in the forms of symbols, posters and color motifs.

You were just using me all this time.
SPOILER ALERT! AN IDEA IS BORN! The generative idea for this installation was born of the phrase “I wanted to give the back staircase some much needed love”. This idea calls to attention an already underutilized space and even underlines the transient nature of the school by its focus on a space initially intended as pure circulation.
ISSUES ADDRESSED. Seeking to address larger institutional issues, from the lack of Studioculture and student identity, to overcrowded facilities and even the lack of student’s own personal lives outside of the BAC, the installation gives a personified voice to the South Stairwell.
POSTER TELLS ALL! Realized over the course of seven floors, the installation can be read as a metaphor for the student’s interaction with the BAC itself. Beginning on the first floor and basement, the South Stairwell welcomes visitors, enticing them to climb to the top by the promise of a surprise (candy suckers). As the visitor ascends, the stair risers provides floor specific commentary and proposes new temporary-use spaces ranging from lounge, green roof, to even a space addressing eye fatigue as students spend long hours staring at computer screens. These vignette-like spaces are spartan in their construction and intended to
reinforce the idea of the South Staircase as a sad, dejected entity, trying desperately to maintain the visitor’s presence. Once the visitor has received their reward, an impressive view of Back Bay and the intentionally ‘punny’ suckers, the procession reverses itself as the floor treads are now able to be read. In descent, the voice of the staircase turns increasingly sour as the visitor moves towards the exit with messages that range from possessive, to downright mean. The imagery, objects, and phrases found within these vignette-like spaces now take on secondary meaning when read from this unsettling vantagepoint.

THING! Central to the accomplishment of the experience is the utilization of direction and movement as a design tool. The installation demands participation of the viewer in the construction of the sequence of experience and allows for a variety of interpretations to be formed. This experiential narrative maintains both site(floor) specificity and tailors itself to each user.

Taking advantage of the fact the Valentine's Day fell on the week of our installation, we collaboratively wrote a script for the Stair to address its visitors as potential "sweethearts" (see images on the right for excerpts). On the ascending journey the stair is very sweet and offers moments of pause along its path from the basement to the roof, culminating with a cliche offering of flowers and candy and a promt for the paricipant's "fantasy". This prompt is symbolic for the reimagination of what the BAC can become as a place and community.

CASHIER AT SHERMAN’S Spoke with the cashier at Sherman’s Market while purchasing some local and regional produce. When asked whether there are tensions between the different nationalities Union Square, she said there are none. According to the cashier, Union has lost some older businesses due to lack of customers. She imagines Union businesses will thrive once the Green Line extension is complete.
DAVE AT THE SMOKE SHOP While getting a lottery ticket, I asked Dave - the owner of the smoke shop - what is one thing about Union Square that most people don’t know. His response was that the Green Line extension has been in planning since the 1940s.
LEMAR AT RUBY ROGERS I briefly spoke with Lemar about Ruby Rogers - a local social services organization. I found out that they provide help with low-cost housing and host a food pantry for local residents. I wonder what other community initiatives and organizations are active in Union Square.

As an introduction to our design development site, we spent a day exploring Union Square in Somerville as a class. This was experienced through the lens of a scavenger hunt that challenged us to engage with the local culture and community, thus better understand the place that is Union Square. This was an application of situationist concepts of psychogeography, which is a study of space and landscapes through the lens of psychology.

DERIVE ONE
DERIVE TWO
In the study of psychogeography, a derive is an unstructured journey through an urban landscape where the traveler is led entirely by the subconscious cues within the surrounding environment, resulting in an authentic experience of that place. By conducting two derive walks through Union Square, I recorded the experiential qualities along my path and later analyzed my observations. Based on my site analysis – derives, scavenger hunt, research – I want to focus on the triangular zone near
Union Square bound by Prospect Street, Webster Avenue, and Somerville Avenue.

This triangular zone is going to become a primary spatial connection between the new Green Line stop and the lively Union Square. However, the current dilapidated area needs to be activated and densified in order to create an attractive urban fabric that would link Union Square proper to the new transit hub.

TRIANGULATING UNION - URBAN ZONING MANIFESTO

In order to activate and densify this zone, I am implementing new zoning that will promote the local first culture of Union Square and deter external gentrification through new land uses, reuse of existing buildings, property ownership benchmarks and temporal vertical zoning. I aim to prevent gentrification and promote the local-first culture, because I have discovered through my research and site visits that these are the primary concerns of current residents of Union Square.
The renderings above depict the experience I hoped to create in the future of this block. The new densified and activated district will build on the characteristics I have discovered in Union Square, engage the existing buildings through infill and up-fill, and reveal new economic and cultural possibilities for Union Square.

In order to implement the homegrown zoning plan and to anchor the triangular block, I decided to locate an incubator building on the corner of Prospect street and Somerville avenue. The Incubator will play the role of a business and economic ecobator for the entrepreneurs of Union Square. The new center will be dubbed “HEED”, which stands for the “Homegrown Entrepreneurial Economy Dojo”. The new ecobator will partner with existing community organizations and incubators, such as the Artisans’ Asylum, and provide local entrepreneurs with business infrastructure and financial support.

The program consists of rentable office spaces – temporary and permanent – a large collaborative work space, a central lounge and kitchen, conference rooms, workshop spaces, a gallery, a rapid prototyping lab, and financial offices. Additionally, the HEED will provide short-term live-work spaces for those entrepreneurs trying to save money or relocate to Union Square. These spaces will be equipped with the basic technological infrastructure and will host business, marketing, and design thinking workshops for the community and HEED members.

The project site stitches together different layers of urban fabric – a new unified city center. EXPOSURE

Through my research, I have found that urban agriculture is a rising trend among Cambridge residents, yet there are few available plots for urban farming and gardening. As I continued to study the site and the building program and massing, I conducted solar studies to determine the best building orientation and at precedents to develop a site strategy that would encourage the interaction between private and public spaces, prioritize green public open spaces over parking and tectnically peel away layers of materials to reveal interior program and activities.

The Food Lab will consist of a central commissary shared by multiple local food vendors, and spaces for experimenting with urban agriculture, private and public parking, and a public park. The Food Lab will be a symbiotic hub of food growth, processing, consumption, composting, and nutritional testing for the adjacent neighborhoods and the city of Cambridge.

This summer studio focused on design of a recreation center for BAC and Berklee students. The project was under a tight constraint of fittng a few hundred thousand squre feet of fitness program onto a wedge-shaped site with steep slopes and transportation encroaching on its boundaries. Above is the conceptual collage representing the programmatic relationships within the building and the relative experiential qualities that I aimed to create.

Many of the Berklee students are between 17 and 25 years old and live in campus dormitories located within a 10 minute walk from the site. Some live off-campus around Boston and commute to classes. All Berklee students have discounted access to local gyms and sports clubs; therefore, they may be looking for something more uniquely catered to their culture in a new fitness facility. The Berklee students could use a place to relax and practice healty lifestyles.
BAC students are all commuters either living in the Boston metro area or driving in from as far as Rhode Island. BAC students range in age from 18 to 50, and primarily attend classes in the evenings. Therefore, they are looking for a facility with early and late hours or operation, and a convenient location near campus. The BAC students would benefit from a place to meet friends, study, release stress, and balance their lives in a healthier manner.

The first step was understanding the future users of the building - college students. Both Berklee and BAC students lead stressful and busy lives and need a place to play, rejuvenate, and connect – a new heart for the two campuses. The site is challenging due to its odd wedge shape, steep slopes and its location next to the highway. The opposite side of Boylston street, known as Berklee Beach is very active with pedestrian traffic, while the current site is dormant due its use as a parking lot. The resulting site strategy is to locate program in such a way as to activate the sidewalk on the site and to bury some of the program within the steep slopes.

The Playground offers a multi-purpose underground gymnasium and fitness room, as well as an urban view cardio room and integrated building climbing walls for students to play. While the 25 meter lap pool, and yoga and meditation rooms provide the option of relaxation and rejuvenation. And finally, the pool-basin level co-working and installation space along with a the sidewalk café and terrace offer the students and the community to refuel, mingle and connect with each other.

Originally from Southern Chile, the artist crafts backstrap woven textiles created from and inspired by the New England environment. Her handwoven pieces range from scarves and wraps, to small tapestries assembled from handdyed yarns in her workshop. In order to make the local dyes, she forages and cultivates wildflowers and berries native to the New England region. Traditionally, weaving has always been a craft that brings together women in communities and empowers them economically. The artist wanted to pass this tradition on to aid and empower battered and homeless young women in Boston while developing her craft further. In order to accomplish this she decided to establish her permanent residence and weaving studio in the Boston Harbor, which reminded her of her hometown Puerto Mont. Abundant with wildflowers and vegetation that can be used for handdying, seasonally accessible by public transportation, yet serene Grape Island was the obvious choice for settlement.

Weaving is traditionally a household craft but has been transformed by the industrial revolution over the course of human history. I focused my research on indigenous and artisinal weaving techniques and the naturally and locally occuring fibers that are available in the New England region.

In accordance with the artist’s reverence for the natural environment, the architecture of the weaving village is minimally invasive on the site, cascading down the gentle slope on raised piles. The complex progresses from the most public spaces engaging with a common hiking trail to the most private temporary residences. The complex is strategically located away from official campsites but in close proximity to wildflower fields for convenient gathering. It’s axially organized and oriented to take advantage or northwestern views of Boston and the harbor, and to maximize southern solar exposure for daylighting and heat gain in the cooler months.

In the warmer months when the island is accessible by public ferries, from June through the end of October, the artist holds frequent tours and workshops for the visiting and camping public in her studio, and offers four inresidence apprenticeships. The apprentices learn her entire process, from dye production to complex backstrap weaving techniques. The proceeds from this apprenticeship program fund the W.E.A.V.E. Women Empowered Against Violence and Exiguity retreat program during the winter months, from October through May. Through this program, the artist host up to four women that have either been victims of domestic violence or have become homeless and shares her craft in the restorative and sheltered setting of Grape Island.

TEMPORARY HOUSING
The weaving studio is both the artist’s haven and a place for engagement with her students and the public. The studio includes a publicly accessible gallery and gift shop, the yarn and dye preparation shop and the weaving gallery. The tapered spaces are shaped by the process of backstrap weaving, in which the warp grows shorter as the artist completes the textile. The weaving gallery is the space where most of the craftswoman’s time is spent, which calls for an abundance of natural light and an almost spiritual spatial experience.

The Residences The artist’s home and the temporary residences are of modest size and designed to operate with limited electricity and plumbing. They are naturally ventilated and heated with woodburning stoves. The sloped roofs are designed to shed snow and collect rain. The private sleeping quarters are quite small with the intention for residents to interact in the shared living spaces or the workshop to foster community.

MILAN
BOSCO-VERTICALE Translated as “Vertical Forest”, these two green residential skyscrapers in Milan, Italy, designed by Boeri Studios and slated to be completed in late 2013, bring the forest back to the city. In order to tackle Milan’s deforestation, pollution, and heat-island issues the towers incorporate biodiverse vegetation facades, rain collection, and grey water recycling systems into a dense footprint while opening the rest of the site to a green space. The towers not only improve the quality of life for their residents through passive use of over 700 trees, but set an urban scale precedent of re-colonizing dense European cities for a greener future.
The Vertical Forest sets an urban re-forestation precedent for Milan and improves the natural environment of the city. The grey water filtration and irrigation system is a technological object incorporated into the building to support the green surfaces. The green surface impacts the buldings and the immediate site as these are its full extents of reach.

LONDON
DAVIES ALPINE HOUSE Commissioned by the Royal Botanical Gardens, in London, the project is a cooling greenhouse designed to reproduce the climate conditions required to grow alpine plants in a fluctuating and humid UK climate. The project architects set out to design a glasshouse that would reduce energy used for cooling the interior space yet create an aesthetically pleasing structure to attract more visitors to the alpine plant habitat exhibit. The resulting structure incorporates natural cooling techniques to use 90% less power than a conventional refrigeration system, and an innovative glazing system to increase the amount of natural light and ventillation available to the housed plants.
The building as a case study of an energy efficient air conditioning system sets a sustainability precedent that can implemented outside of the immediate site. The innovative glazing system on the roof of the pavilion maximizes the natural light exposure for the housed plants and has an aesthetic effect of the imediate site. The building’s passive cooling system has the most sustainable effect on the interior of the pavilion - it mimics an Alpine climate and reduces energy use by 90%

BOSTON
DEWEY BIKEREACTOR The project transforms a vacant building near Dewey Square, at 51 High Street, into a living bioreactor symbiotically tied into the urban and social fabrics that produces fuel for humans and vehicles. The building will draw on the CO2 produced by the nearby I-93, and the thousands of gallons of greywater produced by the bicyclists daily to feed its algae bioreactor. The system will take waste from Boston’s commuters and fuel them in return. The bikereactor building embraces the value of symbiotic and opportunistic, almost subversive, sustainability. The building becomes a living machine, employing a high-tech approach, and taking on a productive and educational role, beyond serving the basic programmatic needs of the users. The system would encourage development of alternative renewable biofuels and contribute to an urban-scale precedent model that could hopefully be implemented on other similar sites.
The Bikereactor aids urban polluion mitigation by using carbon dioxide emissions to produce cleaner-burning biofuel, while educating the public about algae energy. The algae processing technology inside the building creates sustainable products but requires a heavy supply of electricity from the grid. The facade algae bioreactor that pumps water and microalgae daily becomes an aesthetic feature of the building and the immediate site, as it remediates water and air pollution.

After scavenging and reiterating the wall detail, we were asked to redesign the wall by implementing a contemporary construction system while maintaining the overall dimensions and appearance of thee building facade.

Design learning continues outside of studio and regularly scheduled courses. The BAC challenges students' design and collaboration skill through day-long charettes, both required as in the case of the Sketch Problems, and optional. These charettes have become one of my favorite aspects of the design education at the BAC, so much that I continue exploring ways to apply to my design skills outside of the classroom and the office. There are always new skills to learn and existing ones to take to the next level.

This was a one day design charette challenging students to design an international hostel on a given site near Fenway Park while taking into consideration sustainable site design strategies. The building utilizes site orientation, landscaping, wall massing, exterior louvers to reduce daytim heat gain in the summer and store head in the winter. All living spaces have operable windows and shading systems to allow privacy and ventillation control and take advantage of prevailing summer winds. The building is ADA accessible even though it is stepped and elevated off the ground for more effective cooling and insulation.

We had a few hours to research and understand the project and its systems, and then explain what we learned to our classmates through diagrams.

This project incorporates an Eco-Machine to filter and reclaim the wastewater from the entire Omega campus - 119 buildings on 195 acres - using natural processes that don’t require chemicals or dependance on municipal water utilites. The Eco-Machine is a seven-step water cleaning process that creates clean water that can be used for irrigation and aquifer replenishment. The system includes solid waste collection and biodigestion, water balancing tanks to account for water us load variations, and several types of plant, sand and microorganism filters to clean the water to safe levels. The building acts as a public education center to increase awarness of water use isssues.

Our design team had prepared a variety of visual materials for the interview, including beautiful conceptual renderings of the site. However, the clients responded most strongly to the physical models.
