As a California girl, I feel blessed that I grew up with lots of sunshine, surrounded by lush flowers, vegetable gardens, and orchards brimming with fruits and nuts. My grandparents were rice farmers and lived on a ranch, so the agricultural aspect of California has always influenced me. I have many memories of delicious family meals at the table that included freshly picked vegetables from the garden, fruit from the orchards, and a vase of flowers from the yard. That love for the garden is what inspired me to design my first collection, Artichoke Garden. It is brimming with colorful artichokes and artichoke hearts combined with luscious pomegranates and beautiful flowers like peonies and protea. I love how the artichoke is a beautiful purple thistle flower that becomes the most delicious and amazing vegetable! The artichoke originated in the Mediterranean and transported from Italy, so I wanted to bring in some of that history by adding hand-lettered words with the painted artichoke pattern. The Artichoke Garden Collection comes in Cabernet and Teal color-ways and has bold stripes, ikat geometrics, and pomegranate seed-inspired dots. All of these work beautifully together and can be mixed and matched to create endless combinations of luscious florals, fruits, vegetables and geometrics.

Jennifer Paganelli is an innovator in her use of color and design. A social media preview of Jennifer’s paintings were met with a collective appeal for her art to meet fabric, thus the creation with FreeSpirit of Judith’s Fancy new fabrics collection! Given the boldness, richness of the colors in her oil paintings and details of her brush strokes, we used innovative digital printing technology with its limitless color spectrum and brilliant resolution to express Jennifer Paganelli’s painterly art onto cloth through the new Judith’s Fancy collection. Discover Jennifer’s story behind Judith’s Fancy collection . . . Judith’s Fancy was the first place we lived when we moved to the island of St. Croix! High up in the hills, it looked out over the island where we could see to Tortola. This is where I met my first best friend, Beth, as we walked the long road home from the bus every day. Beth was stylish, dressed in Key West hand print fabrics, the preview to Lilly Pulitzer. So long ago but filled with good memories of the salt air and ocean breeze, no matter where you stood on the island, the ocean was visible. Five miles wide and 25 miles long, the island was home for many years. This past year I took up painting and it was as if the island of St. Croix was inside the paintbrush. The colors, the subject matter and all of my cherished memories have come back as I paint. The nostalgia of the island borrowed from the lens of a young girl is now splashed onto canvas. The paintings have made their way into many of your homes with continued demand, we are trying these on cloth. From the master design inspired by my first best friend on the island, to the lovely coordinates that make this collection unique and beautiful, Judith’s Fancy is a quilter’s delight! Thank you for making an island girl feel good and help uncover her passion.

This season of romantic abundance is also one of gratitude, one of family, and one of gathering. My new collection Autumn Grace is a compilation of all the beauty I find in my favorite season of the year. I invite you into the Library of Flowers. Stories & Songbirds comes from a desire to go back to my roots in design. Like so many in our modern culture, I have a craving to surround myself with beautiful, hand-touched, hand-created items in my environment. For this reason, I stepped away from my computer and went back to my origins of hand-painted illustrations, vintage textiles, and a free-spirited fusion of patterns to capture the soulfulness of artisanal craftsmanship, which look beautiful, patched together in a quilt. Welcome to Piecemeal, a fabric collection full of vibrant cotton prints for sewing magical projects for yourself and loved ones. This collection developed during a period in my life when I needed to embrace much unexpected change. I am no stranger to change and have always faced it head-on, but this time I knew I needed to be strong, balanced, and self-nurturing or I would burn out. I have always been a believer of change because it pushes us forward, encourages growth, and can create new beginnings if we listen to our inner voice. Each piece of art in this fabric collection is grounded in botanicals where I always find refuge. Flip through the prints and you will find mid-century flavored bouquets, layers of petals and leaves, and microscopic views of plant cells reflecting that inward review of self. Rose Clouds GP164 I love big scale prints particularly florals. I wanted a big print that could be cut up to look like simple abstracts of form, so a square would contain a lot of background colour with a quarter of a rose looking like a cloud passing. The roses could be fussy cut as well or used as a bold border or backing. Delft Pots GP165 When I travelled to Iran in the early 70s I was entranced by the tiles on some of the mosques I came across. Roses and naive renditions of blue and white pots delighted my designer mind. I finally had to make a statement about it. Sunburst GP162 Growing up in California we feasted on fresh oranges. I was struck by the graphics on the crates they came in to my parents restaurant. The sunburst was a popular motif in those days and the jaunty rays stuck with me. I’ve substituted flowers for oranges and lemons. Whirligig GP166 This button like design comes from the world of Indian prints designed to appeal to the English market. I love the big chunky flowers of those early designs and here I’ve condensed several smaller motifs into a useful scale for patchworkers. Regimental Stripe GP163 I love stripes and good bold ones that you see on classical men’s shirts in England or on pyjamas. Here I’ve brought several versions together to create a stripe that can be complex (using all together in a sashing perhaps) or separately as a good collection of stripes in a patchwork. Trefoil GP167 I Love repetitions of small articulate prints so this design has linked in my imagination for years. Diagonals are really fun to play with so these rows of motifs found themselves playing diagonally. I hope you enjoy playing with them to creative ways. Philip Jacobs I loved all the patterns I’ve picked of Philips’ to do new colours on, particularly the darker colours on Coleus and Spiral Shells. My favourite at the moment is the grey colourway on Tree Fungi. This should be fresh and jazzy on modern quilts – perhaps used with black and white or a cutting design with a soft neutral palette.
