ZERO CARBON LIVING WITH FREEMAN HOMES

Freeman Homes is leading the way in sustainable living, proudly delivering 112 zero carbon living homes across Gloucestershire and Herefordshire.

With plans to build over 100 homes each year, and starting construction in 4 new locations across the two counties, Freeman Homes present EPC A-rated, zero carbon living properties — so what does that actually mean and what are the benefits for you?

SUSTAINABLE LIVING MADE SIMPLE

As an independent, family-run company, Freeman Homes sets a high bar for energy efficiency by incorporating advanced technologies from market-leading brands in their developments. Here’s what you can expect in their homes:

• Air Source Heat Pumps by NIBE: These highly efficient systems absorb heat from the outside air, even in cold weather, and transfer it inside to heat your home.

• Roof Integrated Solar PV panels by Viridian: Enjoy energy savings with sleek-looking, roof-integrated solar panels with optional battery packs for extra efficiency.

• Electric Vehicle Charging Points: Ready for your electric or plug-in hybrid car!

The company also employs pioneering timber frame construction, which enhances thermal efficiency while reducing both maintenance costs and carbon emissions. With these innovations, Freeman Homes empowers residents to lead low or zero-carbon lifestyles, ensuring that their homes contribute minimally to their carbon footprint.

CREATING ECO-FRIENDLY SPACES

In addition to these innovative building practices, Freeman Homes is committed to creating sustainable outdoor spaces. Their developments include biodiversity planting to support local wildlife, leaving a significant portion of land fallow, and incorporating features such as bird and bat nesting boxes, bee bricks and hedgehogfriendly fencing into the fabric of each home. Landscaping options, rainwater butts, compost bins, and recycling facilities, further enhance the ecological footprint of their properties.

WHAT IS AN EPC A-RATED PROPERTY?

An Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) is a document that evaluates a building's energy efficiency. It indicates how much energy is used and the amount of carbon dioxide produced, assigning a rating from A to G, with A being the most efficient. An EPC A-rated property boasts excellent insulation, efficient heating systems, and reduced energy consumption, leading to lower utility bills and a smaller carbon footprint. These homes are not only environmentally friendly but also provide a more comfortable living environment, making them increasingly sought after by ecoconscious buyers.

WHAT IS A ZERO CARBON LIVING PROPERTY?

A zero carbon living property is designed to produce zero or even negative carbon emissions. These homes feature innovative energyefficient designs, renewable energy resources, and high levels of insulation to minimise energy consumption. By reducing their environmental impact, zero carbon living properties play a vital role in combatting climate change, appealing to those seeking sustainable lifestyles.

A VISION FOR THE FUTURE

Hayley Coombs, Sales and Operations Director at Freeman Homes, expresses her pride in the company's achievements:

“We’re extremely proud of reaching this milestone, which reflects the growing demand for sustainable new builds,” she states. “As an independent housebuilder, we can embrace the latest renewable technologies and exceed regulatory requirements to create a new template for sustainable construction and eco-living.”

Freeman Homes also reinvests profits back into the communities where they operate, contributing over £1 million across their current developments to support education, healthcare, transportation, and sports initiatives.

PIONEERING CLIMATE-POSITIVE DEVELOPMENT

In a regional first, Freeman Homes are now introducing a climate-positive building to an upcoming development, serving as a pilot project for cuttingedge sustainable practices. This ambitious initiative aims not only to achieve net-zero emissions, but also to create a regenerative building that contributes more to the environment than it consumes in resources.

“We’ve pinpointed seven of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals that are particularly relevant to us, and we’re striving to make a difference through our sustainability framework,” Hayley adds. “To meet the challenge

of achieving net-zero, we must take meaningful action with innovative strategies that promote the widespread use of renewable technologies in construction.”

HEREFORDSHIRE

Rich in countryside and culture, vast areas of outstanding natural beauty, picturesque landscapes, historic castles and ancient churches, and charming market towns with their independent shops, pubs and restaurants –what is there not to love about Herefordshire?

The little-known rural county of Herefordshire is nestled against the Welsh border neighbouring Worcestershire, Shropshire and Gloucestershire. This vibrant farming county is a paradise for hikers and cyclists with miles of scenic trails and footpaths through cider orchards, vineyards and wildflower meadows. Whatever route you choose, you will be rewarded with breathtaking views and you might spot wild ponies, otters or orchids; or stumble upon castle ruins and pretty churches. There’s no shortage of characterful country pubs where you can sample the local produce, not least the cider for which the county is famous - with 10,000 acres of apple and pear orchards, Herefordshire produces 63 million gallons every year – or the gin and vodka produced in the county by Chase Distillery.

For those who prefer their scenery a little faster, the River Wye offers the very best of canoeing where the river banks are beaming with wildlife and local rock faces leave adrenaline junkies and climbers alike spoilt for choice. A delightful stretch of the river will take you through Symonds Yat, where you will see the distinctive Scandinavianinspired house that was used for filming the Netflix series, Sex Education. Amongst this expanse of lush valleys, rich agricultural land and spectacular woodland is a host of lavish stately homes including, amongst others, Eastnor Castle, the fairytale castle with its expansive deer park, which featured in the first series of HBO’s Succession; Hellens Manor, a much-loved Tudor/Jacobean home hosting tours, events and local produce markets throughout the year; and

Berrington Hall, a Georgian neo-classical mansion set in Capability Brown’s final landscape and gardens.

'YOU MIGHT SPOT WILD PONIES, OTTERS OR ORCHIDS'

Steeped in history, the cathedral city of Hereford has been the commercial centre of Herefordshire communities for hundreds of years and boasts enormous historical importance. Hereford Cathedral dates back to the 11th century but the site on which it sits has been a place of worship since at least the 8th century. Among its collections, this magnificent Cathedral is home to one of Europe’s largest surviving chained libraries where books dating back to the 8th century are chained to their shelves; and the Mappa Mundi, a treasure of the medieval world inscribed with more than 1,000 cities, towns, plants, animals and birds.

CHELTENHAM

This vibrant Regency spa town on the edge of the Cotswolds offers stylish shopping, an exciting calendar of festivals and an ever-expanding choice of restaurants and bars.

Cheltenham is home to beautiful architecture and well-manicured parks and gardens, providing a stunning backdrop for all that Cheltenham has to offer.

Cheltenham is an elegant retreat which is easily accessible from Bristol and Birmingham, and less than 100 miles from London. It is a superb area for family living and home to the highly regarded Cheltenham College and the Ladies’ College with their neo-Gothic school buildings built in the French-Gothic style with a remarkable bronze dome.

Renowned as the Western Gateway to the Cotswolds, the surrounding scenery is breathtaking. The town itself is well known for its superior floral displays and open green areas. There’s no shortage of fantastic parks; Pittville Park, the largest in Cheltenham, is home to Pittville Pump Room where you can sample the famous spa waters. The discovery of this healing water brought King George III to visit in 1788 and began its growth from a market town to the fashionable, thriving destination that it is today. If it’s water you’re looking for, look no further than Sandford Park, where you will find the 1930’s open air lido with its 50m Olympic outdoor heated pool set in 4 acres of gardens, including patios and picnic areas.

Cheltenham has a number of distinct quarters which each have a different vibe. The Suffolks provide a village feel, with charming boutiques and busy bistros. In the elegant Montpellier district, you can enjoy a romantic meal at a choice of restaurants including The Ivy and Brasserie Blanc. An array of independent shops line Montpellier Walk opposite Montpellier Gardens which are separated by magnificent sculptures, making you feel as though you have been transported to ancient Greece. Wandering towards the centre of town along the wide treelined Promenade, you will find No.131, a fabulous venue for

Afternoon Tea; its Gin and Juice bar is a hotspot renowned as one of the busiest late-night bars with a selection of over 400 gins – is it any wonder that the terrace is buzzing into the small hours? No.131 also has exquisite bedrooms and serves up a superb breakfast too, which is great news if you want to spend a few days exploring Cheltenham. Within this very pretty area and the nearby high street, you will find a selection of well-known stores and higher end boutiques. There are some lovely cafés where you can set your shopping bags down and sip coffee whilst taking in the bustling atmosphere. The sympathetically redeveloped Quandrangle, on the corner of Imperial Square and the Promenade, has been given a contemporary makeover with environmental considerations in mind; solar panels on the roof will be used to generate power for use within the building. The building houses Cheltenham’s first roof-top eatery, The Nook on the 6th floor. The ground floor is a huge space with 2 popular new restaurants, Sef (pronounced “chef”) is an independent steakhouse, the first to be launched in the UK; the team have 30 years’ experience with restaurants in Turkey and Kuwait, this one is well worth a visit for its superior steaks. Next door, Bosca is an Italian neighbourhood restaurant and pizzeria with produce sourced from Naples and Milan and absolutely everything is made in-house; we recommend giving it a go!

Cheltenham is known as the cultural centre of the Cotswolds and it is easy to see why. With an events calendar full to the brim all year round, covering everything from food and drink to literature and music, you are sure to find something to keep the whole family entertained. If the British weather disappoints, there are plenty of things to do on rainy days! The town has a number of theatres, art galleries and museums, as well as the charming Tivoli Cinema with its luxurious seating and in-chair waiter service. For the more outdoorsy amongst you, tackling Cleeve Hill, the highest point in the Cotswolds, will reward you with sensational views across Cheltenham and the surrounding hills.

DUNKERTONS PARK

From Dowdeswell Park in Charlton Kings you will find the divine Dunkertons Park, a unique and vibrant environment set amongst fire pits and fairy lights. Dunkertons produce their award-winning organic cider and perry and have done for 40 years. Originally set up on a small holding in Pembridge, Herefordshire in 1980, production relocated to a brand new stateof-the-art cidery in Dowdeswell in 2016 where they now offer regular tours of the cidery, a cider-making Masterclass and a not-to-be-missed cider and cheese pairing experience. Alongside the cidery are a delightful selection of artisan shops including The Padstow Fish Co, Waghorn’s Butchers, Daylesford Organic and La Boulangerie Artisan. If all that is making you hungry, then there are plenty of eateries to choose from whilst you’re here; Bella Mia Pizza, Bombay Street Food Co, The Woozy Pig, Humble Kusina and D’arcy’s Creperie. The Tap Room is the ideal place to sample the cider and perry after a stroll around the wooded reservoir or whilst taking part in one of the regular quiz nights!

A UNIQUE AND VIBRANT

ENVIRONMENT SET AMONGST FIRE PITS AND FAIRY LIGHTS

You will also find the exclusive Holland Cooper Boutique next door and this is a shopping experience not to be missed. You will be welcomed with a glass of Champagne and a personal stylist who will be on hand as you browse the latest collections, ready to curate the perfect look for you.

INTERIORS

SHAPE YOUR SPACE

New homes offer a genuinely versatile blank canvas, enabling you to shape your space into a place that is uniquely yours and reflects your lifestyle. The creative possibilities are endless; here are some of my favourite styling and design techniques that I applied to my own Freeman Home in Newnham on Severn.

THE APPEAL OF PANELLING

Don’t be afraid to add design elements to the space's structure. A blank canvas provides the perfect foundation to tailor the environment to your needs, allowing you to incorporate decorative architectural features that reflect your taste and style. Coving is an excellent and relatively simple way to make an impact. Inset coving, a contemporary variation, adds a sense of luxury and is ideal for standard-height ceilings, helping to maintain the visual height of the room. Wall panelling has experienced a global surge in popularity in recent years, and this trend shows no signs of waning. It can dramatically transform modern spaces with this once-classic design feature. There is a myriad of options to choose from, making panelling both stylish and functional. If your style leans towards the modern, consider flat panels—a beautifully seamless design that allows the wood grain or textured surface to take centre stage. For a classic, transitional look, explore traditional panelling, shaker style, or board and batten. Shiplap is another favoured style; when used intentionally, it can yield a beautiful outcome that conveys sophistication rather than a sauna-like feel.

appealing. Pay particular attention to your selection of materials in bedrooms, where the goal is often to create a warm, cosy, and inviting atmosphere. Layering textures contributes to this tactile experience. With sustainable design taking precedence, consider incorporating materials like linen, hemp, reclaimed wood, and bamboo—these work beautifully together.

'YOUR HOME IS A REFLECTION OF WHO YOU ARE - ENSURE IT TELLS YOUR STORY'

THE POWER OF TEXTURE

I am a devotee of texture, and any space can be elevated by infusing a variety of textures through furniture, bed linen, cushions, rugs, window treatments, or wall coverings. In this case, more is more. Texture does not simply refer to fluffy or coarse materials; finding pieces with tactile surfaces is far more visually interesting and

DRESS YOUR WALLS

If you’re looking for a quick solution to elevate your space, intentionally placed art can be transformative. Seek out pieces that resonate with you—what style of art do you enjoy? Contemporary, abstract, realism, or classicism? A piece of art that you love can completely alter your perception of your space. If you are preparing for renovation or rejuvenation, art is an excellent starting point for your decorating journey. It offers a springboard for your colour palette and can influence the overall style of your home. Whether your future decor is colourful or subdued, art creates a focal point and encourages emotion and imagination. Art is deeply personal; not only can a piece rejuvenate a space, but studies have also shown that viewing original artwork has numerous psychological benefits. As a general rule, when hanging art, centre the piece at eye level—around 57 to 60 inches from the ground. If hanging above furniture, allow for 8 to 10 inches between the pieces; any more than this, and they may feel disconnected. Your home is a reflection of who you are—ensure it tells your story!

THE FIRE DESIGN STUDIO

Fire Design Studio is a family-run business with over 30 years of experience.

There is something particularly comforting about snuggling up in front of the fire with a hot drink on a wintery night. An inviting fireplace is a welcome feature for any living space, enhancing the ambience of the room, adding to the design and providing heat whenever you want it.

I met Matt and George, Father and Son team from the family-run Fire Design Studio in South Wales. Their passion for the business was evident from the very first moment we met in their impressive Newport showroom; they are rapidly expanding and now also have branches in Cardiff and Manchester.

It’s clear from the outset that their expertise is second to none. Matt has been in the industry for 35 years and his goal is to ensure that his expert knowledge is not diluted as the business expands. First and foremost, Matt says, "We are a family business and our customers are our priority. We pride ourselves on giving our customers an honest and efficient service."

Matt set up the business around 20 years ago and proudly tells me that their “amazing group of fitters have worked alongside us since the beginning”. Strangely, even though I only met them a few minutes earlier, this doesn’t surprise me; there’s something about this place that makes you feel like you’re one of the family within minutes of walking through the door. Fire Design Studio is now a nationwide business dealing with over 50 brands of fires, offering full installation of log burners, gas and electric fires all over the

'THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT THIS PLACE THAT MAKES YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE ONE OF THE FAMILY'

country, from Newcastle to Cornwall. They don’t compromise on quality and only deliver top-end products; using their own team of reliable fitters means that they can ensure that their excellent level of customer service is maintained. “We offer full installation on log burners, gas fires, electric fires and of course media walls which are a gorgeous, practical way to jazz up your living space,” says George.

I’m interested to know more about electric fires, which seemingly are becoming more and more popular. George explains that electric fires have come a long way over the last few years. I am amazed at how realistic they look as we wander through the showroom and he shows me a selection on display. “If you’re after the look of a real fire, electric not only gives that, but it’s also a more sustainable option than gas, particularly if you generate electricity through renewable sources such as

Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar Panels, and if you buy your electricity from a green energy provider. From an efficiency perspective, absolutely all of the heat from electric fires goes directly into the room because there’s no chimney or flue, so no heat is lost, and they don’t emit any fumes.”

There are styles to suit every taste; for the more traditional look there are classic style wood burning stoves that would look at home in a country kitchen. If it’s a more contemporary look you’re going for, there is an extensive range of 3-sided glass fires, like the 2 meter fire that was fitted at the home of a Made in Chelsea star recently. There’s no shortage of inspiration here, so it’s lucky that George is on hand to offer his expert advice about design, style and brand to ensure that the end result is perfect for the customer. Once he knows the look you’re creating and the available space, he will be able to make recommendations at highly competitive prices.

OAKFIELDS

CREDENHILL, HEREFORDSHIRE

The Herefordshire village of Credenhill offers the best of both worlds for those seeking a rural countryside setting with easy access to city-style conveniences.

Nestled near the foot of Credenhill Park Wood, Oakfields is a collection of properties by the local familyled developer, Freeman Homes. From this enviable location, oak trees frame iconic Herefordshire views, while the vibrant cathedral city centre of Hereford is just a stone’s throw away.

From Oakfields, you can explore parish trails and the rich history of the area on foot. A public footpath runs through the fields directly behind the properties, providing expansive views of the Herefordshire landscape. Nearby Credenhill Park Wood, managed by the Woodland Trust, is steeped in history as a former Roman army depot, medieval deer park, and the site of an Iron Age tribal centre. It features a range of paths, views of the Black Mountains, and stunning woodland flowers, making it a haven for diverse wildlife. Geocaches in the woods keep younger explorers entertained.

Travel into the city to discover a mix of popular high street brands and an evergrowing number of notable independent shops, eateries, and social venues. Cobbled streets hide delightful gems, or you can visit the Old Hereford Market, which offers everything in one convenient space, including a Waitrose supermarket and an Odeon cinema. Don’t miss The Courtyard, a cultural hub that stages touring shows and in-house productions.

Yet the location is not the only highlight. The homes at Oakfields offer the opportunity for zero-carbon living. Freeman Homes has integrated renewable energy technologies from market-leading brands to achieve A-rated energy performance certificates, ensuring high energy efficiency and low running costs. Viridian roof-integrated solar PV panels and NIBE air source heat pumps harness natural resources, reducing

reliance on the National Grid. Timber frame construction enhances thermal efficiency, and Project EV car charging points support electric and hybrid vehicles. All of this is complemented by thoughtfully designed spaces, style, and the signature specification for which the developer is renowned across Herefordshire and Gloucestershire.

To learn more about Oakfields and available properties, call 01594 543 354 or email credenhill@freemanhomes.co.uk. Visit the Freeman Homes website at www. freemanhomes.co.uk for the latest updates on the development.

LOCAL PERSPECTIVE

We asked Oakfields residents James and Indie what they love about living at Oakfields in Credenhill.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR MOVE TO FREEMAN HOMES’ OAKFIELDS?

We moved to Oakfields in October 2023. The location is really convenient, with easy access to Hereford city centre, while still feeling like it’s in the heart of the countryside, with walks, shops, and pubs nearby.

Before we moved in, we were pleased with all the choices available to customise our home, and the customer service was excellent. The site team continued that great service after we moved in, quickly resolving any issues or concerns we had.

What we love most about our home is how warm and high-quality it feels, which is different from what people often think about new builds. We have plenty of space inside and outside to cook, socialise, and work from home when needed. We even converted our garage into a gym so we can work out at home.

A year later, we feel very at home here, and with the ongoing customer care from Freemans, we don’t have to worry about any issues around the house in the years to come.

THE REPAIR CAFÉ

In an era where technological advancements and fashion trends often tempt us to replace rather than repair, our environment pays the price. Yet, a refreshing culture of resourcefulness is reemerging—one that embraces the art of "repair and reuse." The South Hereford Repair Café embodies this spirit, inviting the community to come together to repair, reuse, and revive items while celebrating the valuable skills of creativity and sustainability.

Technological advancements and fashion trends perpetuate the desire to replace rather than repair, as consumers aspire to the latest gadgets and styles. The invention of plastic, coupled with the widespread availability of cheap mass production, has led to a society focused on consumerism and convenience. This disposable mindset has a significant impact on the environment, with increasing amounts of waste being sent to landfill and a growing demand for the manufacture of new, ultimately disposable items.

This behaviour is detrimental to the environment; however, there is a renewed culture of "repair and reuse" Unfortunately, the repair skills that were once prevalent are gradually disappearing from our high streets; you would be hard pressed to find an independent cobbler these days - and that’s where the Repair Café comes in!

Originating in Amsterdam in 2009, the Repair Café movement took a significant step forward with the creation of the Repair Café International Foundation, a non-profit organisation launched in 2011. According to Repair

Café International, there are now 3,269 Repair Cafés worldwide, including 362 in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Approximately 49,035 volunteers are repairing around 58,842 items every month!

Much like the BBC’s Repair Shop, the South Herefordshire Repair Café serves as a vibrant hub inviting the community to bring in items in need of repair. It’s also common for visitors to stop by simply to socialise, enjoy a cup of tea, and indulge in (rather good) cake - all provided free of charge! Held monthly on Saturday mornings at Dinedor Village Hall, villagers arrive with broken vacuum cleaners (the most frequently repaired item, I’m told), other electrical items, toys that have seen better days, damaged clothing, and even blunt tools needing sharpening. Repairs are offered at no cost, but donations are welcome to help the café continue operating.

DID YOU KNOW?

THERE ARE NOW OVER 3,269 REPAIR CAFÉS GLOBALLY, INCLUDING 362 IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND IRELAND.

Since its inception in April 2023, the enthusiastic group of local volunteers has successfully repaired over 300 items, resulting in an estimated carbon saving of 6,800 kilos of CO2 - roughly the equivalent of driving 17,000 miles in a typical car or producing 10,000 pints of milk. This number continues to grow month on month!

The benefits of the Repair Café extend far beyond environmental impact. There is a strong sense of purpose and pride among the exceptionally talented and generous volunteers, matched by the gratitude and praise from those who visit. The advantages for everyone who attends are clear: the Repair Café is a hugely important part of community life in this village - long may it continue! repaircafe.org

MORE THAN JUST A GAME

Golf evokes images of pristine greens, manicured fairways, and stylish attire, but it offers more than just leisure. We spoke with Herefordshire-based golf pro Niall Powell to explore the deeper advantages of the sport.

Niall turned professional in 2021, and in his second season, he won the Northern Irish Open Pro-Am at Cairndhu Golf Club. He later claimed a Clutch Pro Tour title (Tier 1) at The Astbury Golf & Lodge Resort.

NIALL, WHAT HEALTH BENEFITS DOES GOLF OFFER?

Golf is a fantastic way to get some exercise whilst also keeping your mind engaged. It helps you burn calories, and the swinging motion strengthens muscles and improves flexibility. Moreover, being outdoors does wonders for your mental health—helping to reduce stress and lift your mood. It is a great all-around way to stay fit, both physically and mentally.

BEYOND HEALTH, WHAT ROLE DOES THE SOCIAL ASPECT OF GOLF PLAY?

Golf is a highly social game. Whether you’re playing with friends, family, or meeting new people, it’s a great way to connect. It encourages conversation and bonding, making it a perfect opportunity to network and form friendships.

Taking a moment to soak in the scenery can help clear your head and provide a welcome break from daily stresses.

SUSTAINABILITY IS A BIG TOPIC IN SPORTS. HOW DOES GOLF TACKLE THIS?

Many golf courses are stepping up to be more eco-friendly. They are using greener maintenance practices, protecting local wildlife, and conserving water. Furthermore, many courses are switching to renewable energy. The goal is to provide a great golfing experience whilst being kind to the planet.

PEOPLE OFTEN THINK GOLF IS EXCLUSIVE. HOW IS THE SPORT BECOMING MORE INCLUSIVE?

Golf is evolving to be more inclusive and welcoming to everyone. Many courses are introducing shorter games, such as 9-hole courses or even short par-3 courses, making it accessible for players of all ages and skill levels. Programmes like “Get into Golf” aim to attract newcomers by providing affordable lessons and equipment rental. The idea is to create a friendly atmosphere where anyone can enjoy the game.

TECHNOLOGY SEEMS TO BE INFLUENCING GOLF MORE THAN EVER. WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS?

Technology is really shaking things up in golf. From high-tech clubs to apps that analyse your swing, there are countless tools available now. THE STORY OF PLANTATION VILLA

In her twenties, Ishara was a successful banker in London, enjoying a life of modern luxuries, travel and a successful career. However, a cancer diagnosis prompted a profound shift in her journey. Seeking alternative avenues for support, she turned to the ancient practice of Ayurveda.

Over six years, Ishara immersed herself in the principles of Ayurveda, ultimately spending time in a Buddhist monastery where she learned the true essence of happiness and balance. This experience marked a transformative period in her life, leading her to focus on holistic well-being.

Leaving her banking career and London behind her, Ishara decided to set up her own Retreat in her hometown, the rural village of Nehinna in Sri Lanka. Once a colonial bungalow with 30 acres of rubber, coconut, cinnamon and black pepper, today, the 150-year old villa retains a sense of authentic charm as a Wellness Sanctuary. Surrounded by lush rainforest and its own natural waterfall, the plantation is a habitat for rare local and migrant birds, butterflies and a plethora of tropical flora and fauna; this is a haven of tranquillity providing authentic Sri Lankan village hospitality in a completely natural environment with no man-made distractions. Later came the second Plantation Villa, located in a 17th century farmhouse within 14 acres of gardens in the Wye Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the outskirts of Ross-on-Wye.

The aim of the Retreats is to establish three pillars for health; nutrition, lifestyle and sleep. When these are balanced, complete health and wellbeing is achieved. A team of therapists provide a tailored retreat for each guest, using ayurvedic treatments and herbal medication, as well as mindfulness practices through yoga and meditation, which also support and regulate the function of internal systems. The menu is prepared by chefs following the principles of Ayurveda in terms of food combination, mealtimes, weather, preparation and seasoning and much of the freshly prepared food comes from the on-site organic gardens or local farms. The combination of nature, the absence of man-

made distractions, good nutrition and mindfulness result in an overall feeling of calmness, lightness and harmony.

Plantation Villa is inspired by Buddhist Teachings, especially that of 'Metta' (Loving Kindness) and Emotional Wellness is a huge part in the journey. This is a sanctuary of healing where guests are welcomed as friends into a home, rather than visitors to a hotel. In addition to pampering and treatments, the Retreat provides tools that help achieve emotional stability and inner peace. Time spent in the natural environment and interactions with the personable team provides the freedom to explore a new way of thinking and is the beginning of a journey to a healthier body, happier mind and an uplifted spirit.

WHAT IS AYURVEDA?

'THIS IS A

SANCTUARY OF HEALING WHERE GUESTS ARE WELCOMED AS FRIENDS INTO A HOME, RATHER THAN VISITORS TO A HOTEL'

Translated from Sanskrit as “the knowledge of life”, Ayurveda is said to be the oldest system of medicine in the world, dating back to the Vedic period of India, a few thousand years ago. Unlike modern medicine, which is largely curative and relies on medication and surgery, Ayurveda focuses on preventative care. Practitioners believe that health is sustained based upon the balance of mindfulness, diet and lifestyle, and illness is not only a physical issue, but a combination of all of these things. Ayurvedic medicine encompasses psychology, philosophy and spirituality.

Holistic treatments, consultations with the Ayurvedic Doctor, talks and counselling with the Buddhist Monk and day spas are available for non-residents at Ruxton Farm.

For more information, or to make a reservation email bookinguk@plantationvilla.com (for UK), reservations@srimal.com (for Sri lanka), or visit plantationvilla.com

PLANTATION VILLA - A SOCIAL ENTERPRISE

The retreats fund and maintain the Metta Trust Charity which provides community development, wildlife and forest preservation. Through this charity, Plantation Villa maintains the local temple, provides free medicine for underprivileged communities, supports the local village schools in Sri Lanka and funds many of the community activities in the village and surroundings. Most of the staff in Sri Lanka are local villagers from underprivileged backgrounds. It is a place where their potential can be explored and their lives improved. The team at Plantation Villa believe in giving back to the planet so that future generations can continue to live in a green world. Their commitment to nature goes beyond a philosophy and is seen in every action performed. They help with reforestation activities, growing and tending to endangered and endemic plants and assisting the many other species that share the plantation. They grow their our own food, plant trees, nurture wildlife and tend to the breath-taking world around us so that you may walk into a little piece of paradise.

STEPPING INTO WELLNESS REFLEXOLOGY

Sophie Williams provides holistic treatments, including Reflexology, Indian Head Massage and Reiki, in her idyllic garden log cabin in Fownhope.

SO THIS TREATMENT CAN HELP WITH FERTILITY?

Yes, reflexology has a hugely calming effect on the nervous system, making it extremely valuable for emotional well-being and healing generally. It can be very powerful in aiding relief from hormonal fluctuations and menstrual issues. I work with both men and women to support their fertility journey, where my focus is on stimulating or balancing the endocrine and reproductive system.

YOU HAD A SUCCESSFUL CAREER IN THE CORPORATE WORLD IN LONDON FOR MANY YEARS, WHAT LED TO SUCH A HUGE CAREER CHANGE AS A REFLEXOLOGIST?

Personal experience with past trauma and illness led me to reflexology as a gentle way to start my recovery journey. I discovered the profound healing power that reflexology can have. I also had a strong desire to help others find similar healing, so, in my late 30’s, I pursued reflexology.

TELL ME WHAT REFLEXOLOGY IS AND HOW IT WORKS?

It’s a natural, holistic therapy, which means it seeks to treat the person as a whole – mentally, physically, and emotionally – aiming to get to the root cause rather than treating symptoms in isolation. It involves applying gentle pressure to specific ‘reflex’ points on the feet that link to various organs, glands, and systems in our body. The aim is to address any imbalances and energy blockages to promote relaxation and healing, restore balance, and overall improved well-being.

AND YOU HAVE A SPECIAL INTEREST IN REFLEXOLOGY FOR SUPPORTING WOMEN’S HEALTH?

That’s right, there are various health concerns that are specific to women and I wanted to support the unique challenges that arise from those so I undertook further reflexology training to support fertility, pre and postnatal care, (peri)menopause, and hormonal balance and menstrual issues.

AND WHAT ABOUT PREGNANCY?

Prenatal reflexology is a gentle yet powerful way to support expectant mothers. It can promote relaxation, alleviate stress and anxiety, and support a reduction in common discomforts such as pelvic girdle pain, swollen ankles, morning sickness, breech baby, itching (which can be a symptom of a liver condition in pregnancy - intrahepatic cholestasis) and preparing a woman for birth. Feedback from clients always reminds me of the power of natural therapies. I’ve had clients who have reported their babies turning from breech position the day following treatment (even at 34 weeks), and one client even giving birth 12 hours after her preparation for birth treatment – avoiding induction.

WHAT BENEFIT COULD THIS SORT OF THERAPY PROVIDE TO WOMEN EXPERIENCING MENOPAUSE?

I’ve treated many women experiencing (peri)menopausal symptoms such as hot flushes, anxiety, stress, insomnia, migraines, and hormonal fluctuations with remarkable results and, most of my clients continue with regular treatments to support their ongoing well-being.

WE’VE DISCUSSED A LOT ABOUT WOMEN’S HEALTH; DO YOU ALSO TREAT MEN?

Yes, a third of my clients are men who see me for a variety of reasons including stress relief, to support grief, general well-being, migraines and aches and pains.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE CONSIDERING REFLEXOLOGY FOR THE FIRST TIME?

I would encourage them to approach reflexology with an open mind. It’s a safe and nurturing therapy that can offer profound benefits. Be open with your reflexologist; share your concerns so that treatments can be tailored to your unique needs.

GARDENING

LET’S TALK GARDENS

Words from Peter Dowle

Agarden can be a wonderful thing, with so many interpretations depending on the individual. For some, it is an extension of the home; a place for outdoor cooking and entertaining. For others, it is a quiet place to contemplate and relax, surrounded by nature; or perhaps it’s a mini gardener’s market producing herbs, salads, and fruit for the table, safe in the knowledge of its provenance.

Whatever the interpretation, the garden should be steered by the owner to deliver what they are seeking — “easier said than done,” I hear you say — and this becomes part of the role of a garden designer. Someone who listens and can interpret these ideas becomes a conduit for the owner to create a garden that truly reflects their personality and needs.

Step into Leaf Creative! At Leaf Creative, a design team awaits, ready to listen and deliver your dream garden; but be prepared to talk plants, because this is where our connection with nature really happens.

tree is in full blossom, accompanied by the warmth of the spring sun, gentle fragrance, and blue skies. It’s no wonder that the Sakura or cherry blossom season in Japan is revered across the whole country.

'A GARDEN IS A JOURNEY WITH PLANTS!'

Plants will become your one-to-one narrative with the changing seasons, starting with the first snowdrop and its promise of better things to come, to the heart-lifting awe you feel when a cherry

This leads on to our summer plant connection, which may feature a drift of scented lavenders basking in the sun, accompanied by the gentle hum of bees hard at work; or a quiet, holiday-inspired Mediterranean mix of olive, rosemary, cistus, and thyme.

Summer melts into autumn, and the plants keep giving. Abundant fruit from apples and pears, bright berries from cotoneasters and pyracantha, and vibrant hues of reds, yellows, and golds orchestrated by Japanese maples are just some of the wonders of autumn. There is always a wonderful selection of late-

season bloomers too, from delicate cyclamen to cheerful Michaelmas daisies flowering alongside the sun-seeking anemones.

Winter then becomes a real celebration for plant lovers, as evergreen viburnums sparkle with white flowers alongside richly scented mahonias. Hellebores grace the winter garden with sturdy white and pink flowers, no matter what Mother Nature delivers.

A plant design, even for the smallest space, can take you on a journey exploring every season, with a selection of plants doing their thing for that moment. This is one of the many wonderful things a garden can do.

Let plants be your starting dialogue when you talk gardens, because plants will add the magic and atmosphere to any space. They will calm, they will excite, and they will constantly change — you just need to observe. A garden is a journey with plants!

FOOD & DRINK

THE GOLDEN MILE

What better way to spend a Sunday than a bracing beach walk followed by a well-earned pint and a roast in front of a roaring fire at a charming country inn!

Just minutes from the M4 between Cardiff and Bridgend is the magnificent Heritage Coastline with its spectacular golden sandy beaches, rugged rocks and breathtaking views – the perfect setting to blow away the cobwebs! The Vale of Glamorgan is renowned for its natural beauty; it’s a haven of tranquillity, a captivating corner of the British Isles with mesmerising scenery. The 15 miles of coastline offer 14 beaches, so there truly is something for everyone; from surfers seeking waves, to walkers and wildlife lovers, photographers and families of sandcastle-builders. Southerndown not only boasts a beautiful sandy beach, but it’s home to some of the best rock pools around, the perfect spot for a paddle (if you’re brave enough), and ideal for fossil hunters! It’s also been featured in films, music videos and TV, including some episodes of Doctor Who. The cliffs have exposed sedimentary rock, which creates unique layers in its foundations that is quite extraordinary.

My personal favourite is Ogmore-by-Sea, one of the quieter spots along the coast. A stunning stretch of vast white sandy beach and far-reaching views from the clifftop footpath, where you will also find the ancient ruins of the Medieval Ogmore Castle. There’s even a riding school nearby if you want the experience of horse riding on the beach, giving you the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Vale from a completely different perspective.

'THE PERFECT SETTING TO BLOW AWAY THE COBWEBS!'

This is a walker’s paradise, with trails suitable or a short stroll as well as a challenging hike. There’s a Forest Trail, a Castle Trail, a Beach Trail, a Gin Trail and even a Gavin and Stacey Trail! For lunch, The Golden Mile, a cosy, elegant pub tucked away in the beautiful rural countryside,

is just a few miles from the coast. We were greeted with a warm Welsh welcome, a great selection of ales and an extensive wine list. The place is bursting with drinkers and diners; locals and tourists; the atmosphere is buzzing. The menu offers a superb choice of home-cooked, fresh local produce catering for everyone; there are vegan options as well as a children’s menu. Sunday is for roasts so I order beef, which comes with everything you would expect, and more! Generous portions of delicious thick slices of perfectly cooked tender meat, crispy roast potatoes, an excellent selection of vegetables and Yorkshires, with no shortage of gravy. I somehow manage to find space to follow this with rice pudding ….this is something that dreams are made of, I want to take a bucketful home with me but I decide that the best thing to do is to come back and dine here again!
