Yanjin is a small city of 55,000 in the Yunnan Province located in the mountainous south central region of China. The existing infrastructure and building stock is being threaten by the rising Huai River. The provincial government has embarked on a resettlement project to move the city to higher ground. The MCM Group was chosen to develop a master plan and schematic building designs for the new city. Responding to the dynamic forces that shape the extreme topograhy of the region, the high school was conceived as two sectionally offset ‘colliding’ bars. A courtyard is produced by their divergence. At their confluence, an atrium with ‘flying circulation’ serves as the cafeteria and an informal gathering space. The main entry is flanked to the west by administration; classrooms are arrayed along the length of the bars with a gymnasium on the east end; a multi-media space in the center; and teachers offices and lounge on the west end.

Phasing Diagrams Transformation occurs through a series of precise construction phases that can happen independent of each other over a number of years, or all at once. The phases are presented in an order that addresses the school’s immediate needs first: a new entry into campus and greater access to the library. Subsequent phases address the creation of a

Nogales High School (NHS) has many sterling academic programs that have been recognized on the local, state and national stages. Yet the character of the campus does not reflect the quality of its educational offerings. Presently, there is no identifiable front entry to campus and no strong, central space that defines what it means to be a Nogales Noble. There are numerous green spaces on campus yet they are disconnected from each other and therefore unable to function as a proper quad.

The first step is to create an entry into campus that is centered on the new library and opens out to allow access and visual connection. This entry path becomes the new “front door” to campus and is flanked by a new administration building to the south and a new lunch shelter to the north. Although separated by a landscape buffer, these two buildings will welcome you into the new heart of the school.

We propose to create a large quad in the middle of campus that is centered on the symbolic heart of the school: the Library. This new central space will provide a strong framework for future campus growth and will allow an eclectic assortment of buildings to exist side-by-side without detracting from a strong sense of place.

The Distant Future of NHS A strongly defined central quad will allow buildings of different sizes, shapes and architectural styles to exist side-by-side without detracting from the character from the campus as a whole. One posible future for Nogales High is depicted above with buildings that range from 1 to 4 stories. By establishing a strong plan, future generations will benefit from the flexability and cohesivness of this approach.

RIVER INTERRUPTED

The desire to green the Los Angeles River and the recognition that the channel that contains it is vital to protecting the surrounding communitites from ood waters have long been in con ict. Instead of blithely ignoring this fact and proposing to green the existing river, the project acknowleges today’s river as a piece of engineering infrastructure far removed from its original form and meandering locations. The con ict will be settled by soving an engineered problem with engineering. The normal ow of the river will be diverted to a new soft bottom channel while the existing channel will be maintained as ood control infrastructure. The normal ow will be re-directed via a spillway introduced in the bottom of the existing channel to an engineered wetland. The weltand will cleanse the water before it is discharged into the new channel. The wetland will also provide habitat for native plants and animals, thus transforming the Piggy Back Yards area into a park for the Clean Corridor and surrounding area.

A NON-HIERARCHICAL URBAN FABRIC THAT PROMOTES COMMUNITY In contrast to tradional zoning which separates uses, we propose a new urban fabric designed to allow and encourage ne-grain mixing of light industry, retail, creative living and creative work spaces. It gives identity to each of the separate programs while allowing an open and exible relationship amongst them, thus fostering interaction and collaboration. The design responds to the scale and pattern of the surrounding developments while at the same time proposing its own unique space. The orientation of the fabric resets the urban grid to capture the prevailing winds for ventilation and to create circulation corridors toward the river.

scheme three In scheme one, the theater is elevated and placed on the eastern portion of the site thus freeing up the front portion of the lot for public space. Support spaces are located behind and underneath the theater. The offices are also located behind the theater.

This scheme was chosen because the open corner democractizes the theater, inviting the public to participate in the spectacle inside. This portion of the site also faces south thus providing an opportunity to develop an atrium space that could partly be passively heated during the winter months.

In scheme one, the theater along with its associated support spaces are placed subgrade to free up the ground plane for a plaza. The lobby is placed to face Jackson street, the main thoroughfare adjacent to the theater. The offices are located behind the lobby.

The fly tower and support spaces are placed toward the street corner to give the building a scence monumentality while creating an inner courtyard. LOFT combines the low cost-per-watt ratio of thin film with the unique architectural possiblities of Southern California’s climate to create a house that answers the solar decathalon’s challenge of affordable, net-zero living. Lofts canopy houses the thin film membrane, produces an outdoor mutilpurpose space and sheilds the primary volume from the elements.
