JONAS BROTHERS STUDIOS OF NEW YO R K
A FAMILY AFFAIR SINCE 1908 Consider the 21st century hunter. Practically the personification of the word anachronism, he or she wants to venture as far from the iSomething, ubervegan, yoga pants-wearing stream as possible. Though they may use GPS to find the best place for a blind, no one should be surprised that modern day hunters continue to feed an art form that found its wings 130 years ago in Victorian England: taxidermy.
by Lee Roberts
In its heyday, middle class Brits decorated tables and windows with artfully arranged lifelike bodies of songbirds and gamefowl. Some even put their pets under glass. Darwin's “The Origin of the Species” and archeological discoveries brought the natural world into everyone's mind and living room. For the aristocracy, the African safari became a rite of passage, and they layered skins of lions, tigers, and zebras over their floors and furniture. These days, though arguably most Americans prefer the animals in their home to be alive, the trophy room, and even the trophy building, is alive and well, according to Carl Pepi, owner of Jonas Brothers Studios, Inc. in Brewster, New York. Coloman Jonas immigrated to the United States from Hungary and started a taxidermy business in Colorado in 1908. Four of his brothers eventually joined him, then branched out on their own, to New York and Seattle. Though long separate entities, two studios continue to work with hunters, museums, and what Pepi described as the odd pet owner.
...THE
TROPHY ROOM,
Pepi, raised in the Bronx, learned to hunt and appreciate wild animals from his Italian father. After apprenticing at a Bronx taxidermy shop called Kenya Studios and learning his trade, Pepi bought out his boss. A few years later, in 1985, Pepi acquired the historic Jonas Brothers New York business and moved his Bronx operation north.
Many hunters' DNA seems to include an awareness of history and an allegiance to tradition. Pepi believes hunters mount their kills for a few surprisingly sentimental reasons. Recalling the memory of the hunt seems an almost primal rationale. “You never forget your first,” Pepi says, of a young boy's first spike horn deer — a small trophy, but a big event. Tied to that memory, and perhaps the waning ability to experience true wilderness, says Pepi, is a desire to stay in contact with nature.
AND EVEN THE TROPHY BUILDING, IS ALIVE AND WELL...
“Clients want more of the outdoors indoors,” he says, describing one mounting that turned into, “half-a-mountain.” The client asked Pepi's company of eight taxidermists, seamstresses, and nature architects to build a place for 30 mounted wild sheep from around the world in a natural-looking setting “45 feet long by 25 feet high.” One home-monument grew “40 feet to the ceiling,” and another included, “a 65 foot octagon,” says Pepi. Jonas Brothers Studios of New York has worked for seven Weatherby Award Winners as well as notable hunter Ernest Hemingway and James Mellon. For most of the 19th and 20th centuries, only museums had money enough for this kind of display, and more recently, as public dollars find other uses, museum work

has mostly been limited to maintaining current dioramas. “They have all the animals, now ... we do a lot of restoration [in museums] now,” says Pepi. Taxidermists also form lifelike animals from entirely manmade substances. They call this recreation and many museums prefer to represent animals in this way. Pepi's studio creates these displays, too. “We do a lot of re-creations for them” most recently, skulls, even a Komodo dragon, he explains. Perhaps hearkening back to taxidermy's first wave of glory, the Hall of Curiosity customer still exists in the post-modern world, says Pepi. His artists still mount animals for Ripley's Believe it or Not Museums around the world. “They send us two-headed this, and three-legged that,” says Pepi. He emphasizes that they 're-create' none of the Ripley's work. “It's all real stuff; we don't make it for them,” he says. Though he says working with public institutions has its advantages, chief among them being the time to plan, study and perfect a display, more recent clients invest in a more personal monument, and the Jonas Brothers Studios artists dedicate themselves to recreating nature according to their customers' schedules. It takes his wife Mary and their two children, Sierra and Michael, to meet this demand these days, and they always keep their ears open for new taxidermist talent. “Kids today don't
sturdy foams lend form to the animals and enable the artists to sculpt and articulate joints and muscles as if frozen in mid-leap, snarl or swipe. Sewing and tanning are only two of the several skills a taxidermist needs, says Pepi. “You need eight talents,” he explains. “We work with steel, we work with wood ... there's welding, there's molding, there's sculpting,” he says, just for starters. Finishers add details like the correct shine on an animal's nose, for instance.

As technology has changed the hunter's quest, it has also affected the art of taxidermy. When John, Louis Paul, and Leslie Jonas opened their shop at the turn of the 20th century, they and their contemporaries transformed taxidermy by understanding their subject's nature and mimicking an animal's musculature and movement. Using the materials of the day, paper, plaster and burlap mache, they created a mannequin, then arranged — taxied is the term of art — the carefully tanned skin in a way that appeared lifelike. Nearly 70 years later, when Pepi started as an apprentice in the Bronx, the materials hadn't changed hardly at all. More recently urethane and other easily-carved

Most important for an artist who creates life from death, a taxidermist must have experience enough to see the natural world and express it convincingly. Since many of the Jonas Brothers Studios clients now want some portion of their trophy's habitat to lend a sense of reality, details of vegetation and geology matter. “We have people who are building rocks,” says Pepi, and “an acacia tree [to portray an African plain, for instance] needs to look like an acacia tree.”
Now that most of us carry video cameras in our smallest pockets, international big game hunters who want to keep their hunting memories alive can upload thrilling moments onto YouTube. Many do, and it can make for some interesting web surfing. (Google "Golden Eagle hunts wolf", sometime.) Strictly speaking, hunters clearly have other means of memorializing their prey, yet taxidermists continue to have plenty of work. Though psychologists might theorize about hunters' devotion to a timeless pastime, all the unpacking of the phrase frozen-in-time seems somehow to fit. For today's hunters, it appears that stopping the clock with the help of a taxidermist like Carl Pepi, whether with a small pair of deer antlers or a 20,000 square foot home museum, will continue to interest hunters for ages to come. HISTORIC RANA CREEK RANCH
Carmel Valley, CALIFORNIA / $59,950,000
A n incomparable 14,000+ acre Carmel Valley cattle ranch, just forty minutes from Pebble Beach and Carmel, is for sale! Rana Creek Ranch is a 14,000+
acre working cattle ranch comprised of 12 legal parcels located in central Carmel Valley, California, just forty minutes from the world-famous resort of Pebble Beach and the coastal community of Carmel, California. This trophy property is being offered for sale for the first time in over 30 years and is a once in a lifetime opportunity for the discriminating buyer to own a true piece of California history. (ranacreekranch.com)
Unmatched Beauty | From dramatic ridgeline vistas to rolling verdant valleys covered with heritage class oak trees, the ranch pays tribute to Central California’s rich ranching heritage. The ranch has a plentiful supply of water and natural feed that supports an abundance of wildlife, including black tail deer, wild boar, wild turkeys, mountain lions and all of the other species of birds and small mammals that are indigenous to the area. This is truly a rare opportunity to own a property with miles and miles of bridle trails and over 50 miles of roads that meander through a variety of fields and pastures. For the equestrian, this is a genuine paradise. For the outdoorsman, this is truly a unique opportunity.
Great Weather | Weather at the ranch is highly desirable, almost always clear, with the average temperature in the 70’s, with maybe a week of temperatures exceeding 85 in the summer and a week of colder temperatures during the early part of January. Since there are no street lights, the milky way is clearly visible almost every night.
Location, Location, Location | Located on Carmel Valley Road approximately 20 miles east of the City of Carmel, the ranch reaches south to the top of the mountain ridges that border Cachaqua and north almost down to the foothills of Salinas. At its highest point of 3,405’ the view stretches from King City to the southeast to Santa Cruz to the northwest. Not even a wide-angle lens can do it justice!
Private Airstrip | A portion of the ranch consisting of approximately 1,700 acres is located on the south side of Carmel Valley Road and was recently reconfigured into 10 legal parcels. This portion of the ranch also houses a 2,900 ft improved airstrip. This very unique feature allows the owner and guests access to the ranch within 25 minutes or so from San Jose or San Francisco.
Spacious Main Residence | The ranch boasts considerable improvements, including a beautifully sited main residence of approximately 7,100 square feet, surrounded by fenced pastures and corrals, with extensive use of pecan flooring and paneling, giving the home a modern but western feeling. A dramatic entrance gallery leads to the large open floor plan that incorporates the oversized living and dining rooms. Here a handsome trestle and beam

paneled ceiling, wrought iron chandelier and artistic lighting make these rooms both comfortable and sophisticated. A natural stone fireplace dominates the living room wall and is the gathering spot for relaxed evenings after a day’s ride. These two rooms look out over a lawn ringed by native oaks. Pocket doors in the dining room can be closed for more formal entertaining. A truly unique room is the wonderful western style bar, replete with carved wooden columns, stained glass lighting, a wood burning stove and natural tree trunk beams that help create an elegant and unique entertaining area. The gourmet kitchen features brick lined walls, a central island and granite countertops. Honey colored pecan flooring that is used throughout the house is also featured here. The kitchen is equipped with a walk-in refrigerator and a gourmet cook top. A large and comfortable sitting area, with brick wood burning fireplace and dining area, completes this room. The Master Suite features breathtaking views across the valley. A pot-belly stove framed by massive glass windows is the perfect spot to watch the many wondrous sunsets. The paneled ceiling, with both cove and recessed lighting, matches the color of the pecan floor. The Master bath features stained glass windows, dual marble vanities and a raised platform for the free standing, footed porcelain bath tub. Adjacent to the Master suite is a luxurious family room/den with brick surround fireplace. A graceful round swimming pool, surrounded by brick and natural aggregate decking, is located several steps down from the main residence. A large natural year-around pond is also located close to the main residence and is home to many native birds. Other improvements nearby or adjacent to the main residence include a guest cottage, additional staff residences, ancillary barns, a large sand-filled riding arena and a tack room.
Large Office/Conference Center | A spectacular addition to the property is the 9,000 square foot two-story office building that was completed in 2003. Its “barn style architecture is evocative of early California and allows the building to blend seamlessly into its site. This facility can be used to manage ranch activities or, conversely, could easily become the center for a non-ranch related business activity. Both the impressive double-story entrance foyer with vaulted ceiling and the large carpeted conference center feature massive stone fireplaces. This building is particularly well suited to handle large-scale conferences and also houses several private offices, as well as a large commercial kitchen for entertaining.
Other Improvements | On the southern side of Carmel Valley Road, there is an additional staff residence that overlooks Carmel Valley. Near the west entrance to the ranch there is an additional recently constructed staff residence. A little more than half way up Rana Creek Canyon is a separate barn, corral, and residence that are generally used only during annual round-ups and brandings.
Staffing/Cattle Operations | The property is presently managed, operated and maintained by a full-time Ranch Manager, three full-time employees and one part-time employee. The property is assessed as an agricultural preserve under the Williamson Act. Currently, the cattle operation provides a significant contribution towards fixed and variable expenses. In addition, the cattle operation contributes to the safety and security of the ranch by reducing the fire hazard. Rana Creek Ranch is a truly remarkable property offering the utmost in rural privacy in a pristine and untouched landscape, yet uniquely located near the world-class amenities provided by its proximity to the Pebble Beach community.

The Ranch is currently zoned for 20-acre parcels which positions it nicely for a conservation easement should the next owner choose to create a family legacy compound or corporate retreat and preserve capital vis-à-vis attendant tax deductions. This magnificent holding is situated only 25 miles from Park City — 45 miles from Salt Lake City — 45 miles from Provo. This amazing location is further enhanced by the Heber Valley Airport — one of the best corporate jet-capable facilities in the West — just 25 minutes from the Ranch! This amazing block of land is competitively offered at $3,869,600, which equates to $6,626 per acre. It must be considered by buyers looking for more than a 10 to 160-acre “postage stamp” — here is room to roam in one of Northern Utah's increasingly sought-after mountain locales. CLOVER CLIFF RANCH / AUCTION FEB. 13, 2014 /
Chase County, KANSAS
T he Clover Cliff Ranch is the epitome of the Kansas Flint Hills and embodies the pure quality and functionality this region offers. From its winding creek
bottoms, to the upper hills of big blue stem grasses and fine fences, the Clover Cliff is something to behold. Springs run through grass and timber draws that open to the excellent alfalfa and wheat ground below. Good watershed ponds offer excellent stock water with opportunities for fishing and waterfowl hunting. Very simply the ranch offers the best production; from 7 acres to the cow unit, to world class white-tailed deer hunting. Excellent cultivated land will augment the carrying capacity and offer excellent opportunities for spring turkey hunting or that fall bobwhite quail hunt you have always dreamt about. If you have not seen the new Flint Hills grasses after a burning in the spring, with its vibrant shade of green, then you truly must put this on your bucket list. The original limestone home is perched above the alfalfa fields and the Cottonwood River and surrounded by the Flint Hills. So, just as the land is productive and the location is excellent, the home has timeless potential. The Clover Cliff is centrally located just west of the city of Emporia in Chase County, Kansas. Manhattan, Wichita and Salina are all less than 75 miles and provide good air service. The ranch has a certified set of commercial scales for the hay and cattle business. Current operators are able to have great access to the strong hay market with the ranches location on Highway 50. Production wise, the Clover Cliff and the overall area of the Flint Hills Region, is world renowned for its quality grasses and excellent carrying capacity. Winters are generally mild and allow for good year around operations. The ranch is rated at 650 mother cows and offers excellent shelter from both winter and summer heat. Good water and excellent fences with good gates to each pasture make the ranch easy to operate. The working facilities and holding pens are in great condition and very well thought out. There is a good metal building with a good place to doctor calves in the winter time. The ranch has excellent hay storage and storage buildings. This 4,600 plus or minus acre property offers many hunting opportunities. Kansas is known for its world class white-tailed deer, and this ranch lies right in the middle of the very best hunting area. Traditional stand hunting may be done on the portion of the land on Cottonwood Creek with excellent opportunities for trophy deer. The rest of the ranch is very unique and offers excellent stand and spot and stalk opportunities for those same deer. Turkey hunting is excellent with good numbers of birds throughout the south and central part of the ranch. Bobwhite quail are on the rebound on the ranch and offer some of the very most “classic” chances of hunting this great game bird. Prairie Chickens are prevalent on the ranch and hunting them is a good pastime at the Clover Cliff. The fishing on the ranch is good with bass, catfish and sunfish in the ponds and some catfish in the Cottonwood River. Some of the ponds may require some stocking as they were low during this last drought. Moisture is good now and there is plenty of grass for wildlife and livestock! The ranch has the main historic rock home, a good and well located guest home, workers home and another quality home on the creek. It has excellent outbuildings and good hay storage with good working facilities. It has commercial scales with easy on/off access of Highway 50 and excellent hay storage adjacent to scales.
