Jackson Land & Cattle In the Heart of Jackson Hole

A remarkably beautiful 1,750-acre ranch literally on the edge of the town of Jackson, Wyoming. Jackson Hole is known as the premier resort community in the Rocky Mountain West for many reasons, not the least of which is the scenery. Jackson Land and Cattle Ranch

takes full advantage of the most magnificent views for which the area is so famous. With one of the country’s finest equestrian centers, three trout ponds, a spring creek, rolling timbered hillsides, lush aspen groves and broad native hay meadows, the ranch is literally minutes from downtown Jackson, but a world apart. The spectacular peaks of the Tetons provide the backdrop for this world-class cutting horse ranch, which boasts a tasteful and comfortable home and guesthouse to compliment its outstanding equestrian amenities. This is arguably Jackson’s most desirable ranch that remains essentially unencumbered by development restrictions. Contact John Pierce.

O

pen Fences recently traveled to England to attend the Country Land and Business Association’s (CLA) annual Game Fair held this year at Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire. Approximately 147,000 people attended the fair over a 3-day weekend at the end of July in the height of a perfectly balmy English summer. Blenheim Palace is located in a small hamlet outside Oxford and is home to the current Duke and Duchess of Marlborough. The fair itself spanned roughly 640 acres of the 2000acre Blenheim parklands. The quintessentially English backdrop set the final tone for the game fair, which was, by some attendees’ accounts “incredible by comparison to any event offered in the US…we (Mason & Morse Ranch Company) joined Open Fences alongside other Open Fences members, and hosted a selection of fine rural properties. To top it off, Aston Martin, (an Open Fences Marketing Partner) parked their shiny black 2012 convertible at the front of our display along with a cute British gal that knew which buttons to push. It was simply a great event to take part in as an exhibitor.” “The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) is a membership organization for owners of land, property and businesses in rural England and Wales…the CLA speaks for everyone who believes in a living and working countryside.” Over the course of the annual game fair weekend, visitors, competitors, vendors, family, friends, clients, land and real estate specialists and everyone in between enjoyed an explosion (literally, if one counts the thousands of shotgun reports marking the air every day) of field arts and the sporting best of Britain including, all things rural and related to land, land management, sales, hunting, shooting, guns, dogs, fishing, casting, retail outdoor clothing and more. Although Open Fences’ primary focus is the domestic rural real estate market, interest and expansion into the international market particularly in the search for qualified buyers is gaining momentum. Attending the CLA

Game Fair was a prime opportunity for the magazine and some of its members and advertisers to network with a qualified and relevant audience. Publisher David Light had this to say: “The CLA Game Fair is an unquestionably unique experience. It was an excellent opportunity to begin forging new bonds with our international counterparts, qualified buyers and new marketing partners. We had a fantastic time and we will definitely be attending more international events of this kind in the future.” Light was joined in the booth by some of Open Fences members and advertisers: Dan Duffey, Chairman and CEO of United Country Real Estate; Bart Miller, Managing Broker and John Stratman, Broker Associate, both at Mason & Morse Ranch Company, Glenwood Springs, CO; Emilio Panis of Compania Argentina De Tierras, Argentina; Leonard Logsdail of Logsdail Classic; Clint Orms, world renowned sliver engraver; Sean Finley of High Adventure and Josiah Allen Real Estate of Vermont. Open Fences also sponsored the Spey Casting Championship competition. Scott Mackenzie of Scotland won it this year. For those not in the know, spey casting is a specific technique used in fly fishing...and it was Mackenzie, who in the last seconds of the fair not only won the competition, but recorded a new world casting record with a cast of 70 meters (230 feet!). Leonard Logsdail from Logsdail Classic and the Duke of Marlborough presented the highly anticipated casting competition award before eager spectators. It was a dramatic finale to an amazing weekend packed beginning to end with good times, warm beer (to be expected), excellent food and much laughter and good conversation. The weekend allowed all the participants access to many new contacts including new marketing partners and a surprising number of qualified and enthusiastic buyers. Dan Duffy, Chairman and CEO of United Country Real Estate summed up the experience stating,

“everyone we met was a new connection. We had substantive conversations with well over one hundred attendees and exhibitors. While they all served to shape our understanding of the opportunities and needs for developing relationships with the premier real estate and estate planning organizations in the United Kingdom, several of these connections will be vital links to establishing a proper and professional engagement with the UK market. We look forward to furthering our discussions post event.”

excellent food and much laughter

Mason & Morse joined the discussion adding, “we met a lot of interesting people… dukes, duchesses, deputy ministers, farmers, investors, real estate sales people and so forth...I met a man named Ben Winsom, a sales associate with one of England’s large land and estate brokerages. He and his associates were very receptive to us and able to tell us a lot about their marketplace…”

opportunity for premier real estate professionals, the rich tapestry of countryside and camaraderie created an atmosphere more similar to a big country estate and an enormous family of interest as opposed to a business conference. Leonard Logsdail, Savile Row, London tailor and owner/proprietor of Logsdail Classic in New York, particularly enjoyed the evenings as the group would sit and chat by the side of the river. “The noise of the fair would have died down, the shadows lengthened and the songbirds could be heard, while the fisherman and Spey casters were silently practicing their art.” Emilio Paris, a partner with Compania Argentina de Tierras, a real estate company and the President of Emilio Paris & Co, outfitters agreed, adding, “On the real estate business, I understand that the globalization forces us to look for contacts and business outside our country. As an outfitter, I always focused in the US but now want to expand my net of agents to other

countries. The CLA was a surprise for me because I never expected it to be that big and important.” “Add to that,” from Mason & Morse’s vivid recollection, “gently rolling hillside farms, long sloping and ‘odd shaped’ fields with hedge rows in place of fences, separated by woodland copses and wooded draws; scattered hamlets, estates and castles, many of which have been owned by the same families for over one thousand years, [one is] provided a historical perspective and a great appreciation for Great Brittan and its citizens.” In particular, Bart Miller recalls meeting an “enjoyable English gentleman” who was simply put, a really great individual and a real pleasure to converse with laugh and tell stories with. I would go back to the CLA just for more of those experiences.” The CLA Game Fair had a profound effect on Open Fences and its members. It is an event that will long be remembered and often discussed. Every member of the Open Fences

group realized the growing importance of the European market place and the eagerness of certain individuals to take advantage of the very favorable exchange rate and head west! Having said that, just the process of enjoying a warm British ale with friends at the end of a perfect summer day in the shadow of Blenheim Palace was enough to leave all seriously considering attending the Game Fair next year, to be held at Belvoir Castle in Nottingham. Seeing as John Startman from Mason & Morse Ranch Company is now big pal's with the Duchess of Rutland who's family have owned Belvoir for many generations, we should have no problem finding a nice place to stay. The Fair is not only an unparalleled networking opportunity but is truly a unique experience, which graciously unfolds over an unassuming weekend every July. Mark calendars now for July 2012. ✫

An exceptional experience a conversation with Jonathan Sherrill, co-founder and President of Sporting Heritage Corp. By David Light

S

porting Heritage Corp and Beretta last year launched the Beretta Trident Program— the first program of its kind to apply a stringent evaluation process to rate hunting and shooting destinations for the very purpose of providing sportsmen and women with the ability to select a destination knowing they are choosing a place where they will have an exceptional experience. We had an opportunity to learn more about this unique program in a conversation with Jonathan Sherrill, co-founder and President of Sporting Heritage Corp., the field sports consultancy that manages the Beretta Trident Program and is responsible for conducting the evaluations, executing the brand qualification process, and ongoing quality assurance.

12 | O PEN F ENCES

Jonathan, What exactly is the Beretta Trident Program? In it’s simplest terms, The Beretta Trident Program is a collection of exceptional field sport venues. The concept for the program came from the need to provide a systematized and objective rating process for hunting and shooting venues so that a sportsman or sportswoman could select a destination and feel confident in their choice. Earning the distinction of a Beretta Trident rating means that the destination has been through an evaluation process and scored a rating that puts it among the top 5% of hunting and shooting destinations worldwide. Think of Beretta Tridents as being similar to Michelin® Stars except instead of being

awarded to fine dining establishments, they are awarded to hunting lodges or shooting ranges for their excellence in field sports. Why is it called the Beretta Trident Program? We partnered with Beretta on this unique program because of its heritage associated with field sports and the outdoor lifestyle. Beretta, as you may know is nearly 500 years old—one of the world’s oldest family owned companies and perhaps the world’s premier firearms manufacturer. So it’s not insignificant that Beretta lends its name to this Program. It goes beyond that however, members of the Beretta family review the evaluation report from every venue to reassure it meets the standards for brand affiliation. You know David, each Volume 2 ✫ Number 3

venue has its own unique personality but it also shares two things with the Beretta brand: a commitment to excellence and a genuine, authentic passion for the sporting life. Beretta recognizes the importance of growing their brand’s recognition among a wider group of consumers and what better way to do that than to foster a program where their products can be an integral part of a consumer’s experience, and an experience they know will be exceptional in the area of field sports. How are Beretta Trident Venues selected?

hunter) and anyone else out in the field or on a sporting clays course is qualified and has the proper skills to keep you safe and enjoy yourself. The most scrutinized area is habitat and game management. Here we look at everything and pick out details most guests never think about unless it registers with them as a negative. We’re looking at overall condition of the habitat from the start of the season to the end, from the number of trophy-worthy bucks on a property to average age-class—we have certified wildlife biologists to help with our assessments.

We get a lot of inquiries directly from interested venues that have heard about the Beretta Trident Program. They are believe their venue is of a standard to qualify for a Trident Rating and are interested in learning more about the program’s benefits.

In the end the evaluation provides a point and percentage assessment with specific scores corresponding to the final rating of One, Two or Three Tridents.

In some instances though, we are aware of venues that we think would be a good addition to the Program because of their outstanding reputation or because they meet a strategic need such as offering a particular game or being located in a geographic area where we believe the Beretta Trident Program should have a presence.

That’s a really good question. Today consumers have access to more information than ever before—that helps them make an informed decision—from purchasing a car to finding a plumber. They are used to looking for information to help them make the best choice based on their needs. We realized there was nothing in place that offered the sportsman similar information for making a decision about selecting a hunting lodge or a sporting clays course.

In either case, every venue is evaluated and it must earn its Trident rating. A venue cannot simply buy affiliation with the Beretta Trident Program. What does the evaluation cover? We designed the evaluation so that it covers every aspect of the guest’s experience at a lodge or shooting sports venue. That means it covers not just the lodge but the condition and quality of other structures on the property such as the condition of the kennels and trophy processing area. Of course we look closely at the lodging itself—the rooms, bathrooms, common areas, the dining room, cuisine, liquor and wine offering. The staff is a crucial component of the guest experience and in a hunting or shooting situation it is also a matter of safety. So beyond the normal areas of hospitality we want to make sure the field guides or PH (professional

Why did you create the Beretta Trident Program?

With the Beretta Trident Program we have instituted a rating system that evaluates those things that are important to them. Why should I care if a lodge is a BT rated lodge? You should really care because earning a Beretta Trident is not a small accomplishment. To do so, a venue has earned a place among the best of the best. We estimate that less than 5% of destinations worldwide would merit even one Beretta Trident. So when you select a Beretta Trident rated venue you can be assured you will have an exceptional experience. How many lodges are there in the Program and where are they located?

There are nine venues in the Beretta Trident Program. We have five destinations here in the United States, which all offer the finest in upland bird hunting—from pheasants to chukar, bobwhite quail or a mixed bag these lodges offer fantastic hunting a great accommodations. And we have expectations of adding waterfowl and big game as well as sporting clays venues to our U.S. destinations very soon. In Argentina we have three venues all in Cordoba and all with millions and millions of birds and shooting within minutes from the lodges. We’ve also just added a venue in South Africa for plans game, which we’re very excited about. The number of Trident—rated venues continues to grow—we have evaluations scheduled this fall in Europe and Nova Scotia. Where do I find more information about the BT lodges? You can see all the Beretta Trident venues on our website www.berettatrident.com Here you’ll find descriptions for each as well as photographs and videos from the property, its Trident rating, type of game, location of the property, and contact information. It sounds like you need to be a pretty experienced sportsman to appreciate the quality of a Beretta Trident lodge does any of the venues offer shooting for someone new to the sport? Absolutely, in fact if you’re just getting into hunting or shooting it’s probably even more import that you choose a place that where you can be assured of a great experience from the shooting to the lodging and dining. And if you’re unsure of where you want to go and are looking for help in putting your trip together, the Beretta Trident Concierge service is able to help you. How do I get in touch with your concierge? You can reach them by phone at 888-881-9818 or via email at btc@berettatrident.com Well this has certainly been enlightening Jonathan, thank you for your time today ✫

With over six miles of the Laramie River meandering through the property, the ranch boasts phenomenal fly fishing for brown, rainbow and brook trout. The river corridor offers a truly pastoral setting, with miles of old growth cottonwoods framing the river as it flows through the ranch. Because of the privacy created by the size of the Riverbend Ranch and surrounding properties, there is no public access and this section of the river gets virtually no pressure. Consequently, the fish are plentiful and our experience fishing the ranch indicates the fish average around 16” with the largest fish in the river over 25”. The ranch also boasts world class waterfowl hunting in the fall months along with excellent populations of whitetail deer, mule deer, moose, antelope and a small resident elk herd. With over 6,700± deeded acres and a proven agricultural operation—this ranch is the complete package.

3L Cattle Ranch Saskatchewan, Pleasantdale RM, Naicam, Canada / $37,460,000 CAN

This 36,000-acre offering represents one of the most balanced beef-and-grain

combinations available in North America today. Encompassing approximately 19,170 acres of deeded land and about 16,900 acres of private-provincial-tribal leased land, the 3L Cattle Ranch is currently carrying about 2,500 brood cows + the 2011 calf crop + yearlings born in 2010 + replacement heifers and 115 range bulls. Spring-born steer calves typically weigh about 650 pounds in October—yearling steers shipped in August and September go out at about 850 pounds. Additionally, the Ranch puts up all required winter feed and harvests about 1,700 acres in cash crops — canola, oats, barley. The growing season climate is remarkable — 61 millimeters or 2.40 inches of rainfall per month from May through August and plenty of warm sunshine produce average annual crop yields of 60-bushel wheat, 75-bushel barley, 40-bushel canola and 85-bushel oats—with no irrigation! Knowledgeable Prospective Buyers may choose to convert more land to cash crops and harvest the abundant grass pastures with yearling cattle. The 3L Ranch is situated in Saskatchewan’s renowned “black soil” region about 210 kilometers or 130 miles east of Saskatoon. Two fine smaller towns—Tisdale and Melfort—are within about 60 kilometers or 35 miles northeast and northwest of Headquarters. In the past five years Canada’s economy is most enviable and Saskatchewan’s future is especially bright. The Historic Horse Ranch Fergus, Lewistown, Montana / $15,000,000

The Historic Horse Ranch is nestled in the rolling hills of Central

Montana about 35 miles northeast of Lewistown. The Ranch is comprised of approximately 25,323 total acres including 22,812 deeded acres plus 2,371 acres of state lease and a small 140-acre federal permit. Positioned on the northern side of the Judith Mountain Range, the Ranch is a rare opportunity to own one of the premier blocked-up and contiguous grass ranches in the Big Sky State. The Ranch is ideally located in one of Central Montana’s most desirable and appealing areas. Lewistown and Fergus County afford all the resources required for successful ranching and personal enjoyment of a safe and quiet lifestyle away from the maddening crowds of metropolitan America. The Horse Ranch was first put together to supply remount horses for the U.S. Cavalry in forts throughout the vast Montana Territory in the 1860s and on into the 1890s. The Ranch was purchased by Vernon F. Taylor in 1947 and passed onto his son, James C. Taylor, in 1963. These visionary men have spent the last 64 years creatively shaping and improving this significant holding. This expansive operation contains sufficient hay meadows and summer pasture to comfortably run 700 to 750 head of brood cows on a year ’round basis plus a full complement of replacement heifers and bulls. Even to the untrained eye, it is apparent that the grazing resource has been managed conservatively. The remarkable condition of this historic ranch is the result of over six decades of masterful stewardship. The deep timbered draws and grassy plateaus also provide prime habitat for the resident elk herd, trophy mule deer, antelope, wild turkey and upland game birds including sharp-tailed grouse, pheasant and sage grouse. The Horse Ranch represents an unusual opportunity to acquire a true operating ranch with enough size and carrying capacity to make some business sense even in today’s tumultuous economic climate. Prospective Buyers in solid financial condition with an interest in portfolio diversification and a desire to own one of Montana’s true working outfits should seriously consider The Horse Ranch. It is rare to find a large contiguous land holding with such strong operating resources and sense of history. The Ranch is offered at $15,000,000 by one of Montana’s most respected ranching families. Southern Cross Ranch Catron County, Pie Town, New Mexico / $25,000,000

World-class is no exaggeration when describing the exceptional trophy elk hunting on

the renowned Southern Cross Ranch in west-central New Mexico. The Southern Cross has been superbly managed for years to maintain its status as one of America's premier hunting destinations. A spectacular 6,000 square-foot log lodge is the centerpiece of the ranch. With six bedrooms, five and one half baths, and wraparound deck, the lodge treats guests luxuriously. Straddling both sides of the Continental Divide, the Southern Cross Ranch ranges in elevation from 7,300 to 8,200 feet, which makes it ideally situated for supporting many square miles of pinion pine and alligator juniper forest, interspersed with grassy meadows. Parts of the eastern portion of the ranch adjoin the Cibola National Forest. With excellent year-round access, the "land of giants" is located only 2.5 hours from Albuquerque and 3.5 hours from Santa Fe.

RICE REDUCED! Hidden in the heart of one of Colorado’s last unspoiled mountain valleys, Beaver Valley Ranch is tailor-made for hunting and fishing of exceptional quality. Beaver Valley Ranch, accessible year round, lies less than an hour southwest of Steamboat Springs and nestles against Routt National Forest on the flanks of the Beaver Flat Tops. Blessed with a diverse mosaic of aspen and oak brush groves, heavy timber, mountain meadows, riverine woods, springs and lakes, the ranch has been managed specifically for high-quality big game and trout habitat. Herds of elk and mule deer have room to roam on its 2,665 acres, and plentiful rainbow and cutthroat trout to over 20 inches populate 4.5 miles of the East Fork of the Williams Fork River, an unsung trophy trout stream.

Moriah Ranch Albany County, Laramie, Wyoming / $11,700,000

N

EW LISTING! Situated in the heart of the rolling foothills and rich grasslands of the southern Laramie Mountains, the Moriah Ranch controls nearly 22 square miles of the choicest elk habitat in Wyoming. The ranch lies within Wyoming's Area 7, arguably the best trophy elk unit in the state, and herds of 300 or more elk are common on the property. Plentiful water on the ranch, including several lakes and one year-round stream, is key to its productivity for elk as well as for other game species of mule deer, antelope, mountain lion, bear, sage grouse and ducks. Uncommonly good hunting is complemented by uncommonly good stream and lake fishing here, especially on one large lake that grows monster brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout (some in excess of 30 inches). The approximately 13,853 total acres (nearly 13,000 deeded) of the ranch are nicely blocked, providing for ecological integrity and privacy in four directions. The Moriah Ranch is only an hour's drive from either Laramie or Wheatland, and is accessible year-round.

Sawtooth Shadows Ranch Catron County, Datil, New Mexico / $10,900,000

N

EW LISTING! Rugged scenery combined with trophy elk and mule deer herds makes the 21,700-deeded-acre Sawtooth Shadows Ranch a New Mexico dream ranch for sportsmen with a special appreciation for Southwestern culture, history and landscape. Located in northeastern Catron County near the fabled mesa-top pueblo of Acoma, and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation’s Double H Ranch, the territory around Sawtooth Shadows Ranch remains largely unchanged from when it was settled by the ancestors of the Acoma and Navajo tribes millennia ago, and hardy ranchers a century ago. Fortunately for hunters, the ranch shares a 14-mile boundary with the national forest and its elk (many bulls in the 400-plus class) freely range into the pinon/juniper and ponderosa forests of Sawtooth Shadows Ranch, as well. The fact that approximately 30 landowner bull elk tags come with the ranch and that it lies in Hunt Unit 13, a primitive weapons area for elk, makes this ranch perfectly situated as a trophy elk ranch with a distinctive Southwestern flavor. This ranch has year-round access and lies 20 miles from Datil, New Mexico.

Daymaker Ranch Larimer County, Loveland, Colorado / $12,950,000

NEW LISTING! Expansive tracts of true wilderness located within an hour's drive of

Situated only eight miles east of the resort town of Estes Park and ten miles southwest of Loveland, the Daymaker Ranch benefits from the large herds of elk and deer protected within the boundaries of Rocky Mountain National Park. The Daymaker occupies over six square miles (about 3,947 deeded acres) of prime Rocky Mountain foothill country, including a mix of ponderosa pines, grasslands, shrublands and three miles of the North Fork of the Little Thompson River. The Daymaker Ranch is very private (including a three-mile boundary shared with the Roosevelt National Forest), yet remarkably accessible. Year-round access to Loveland is a drive of only about 30 minutes via County Road, and Denver International Airport is only a little more than an hour away.

Bear Creek Ranch Inwood Valley, California / $3,800,000 This 670 Acre ranch is beautiful, productive, but secluded, nestled in one of the least populated regions in Northern California's most pristine little valleys. Currently being beautified this is an amazing piece of land which offers views of the valley and ranges, many fresh springs, a lazy winding creek and breathtaking waterfall. Bear Creek Ranch is located just above the Sacramento Valley, in the rolling hills of Inwood Valley, just a short 20 minutes drive time from the small bustling city of Redding; with its fine dining, golf, shopping, entertainment, excellent medical facilities and commercial air service. Only an hour away from excellent skiing and other winter activities. The Sacramento Valley is an agriculturally-oriented mountain valley. The Inwood Valley elevations range to approximately 2,600 feet allowing for mild winter weather and cooler summers. Snow capped views of the surrounding mountain ranges Mt. Shasta, Mt. Lassen, and the Trinity Range. Sacramento Valley is one of the few places in California that truly enjoy four distinct seasons. The county road running through the valley makes for easy access to the ranch, with restricted access to a oneof-a-kind homesite with privately owned 200' waterfall and 75 mile views. The ranch is unencroachable and protected by Bonnie Craig Ranch, BLM and Seven Hills, providing security and helicopter patrol, or taxi, by Seven Hills with FBI and MET. The Platinum Wine Club Membership at Anselmo Vineyards, of course offers the only world class winery in Northern California with Michelin class restaurant. For the outdoor enthusiast; miles of pristine riding trails, rafting, fishing, winter X-Country skiing, snow machining. The valley contains a community of ranches, with many classic old improvements reminiscent of the earlier California. Improvements include three capped wells, two harnessed springs, assistance with permits and inspection. Brand new perimeter fencing was installed in 2009, for security and livestock, and a sanctuary landscaped in stone creates the perfect outdoor entertaining area, with walkways, landings and staircase to enjoy the falls. The ranch has the potential use, as CFOF cattle ranch, with its improved irrigated pastures of 67 acres with

Hunting is excellent and exclusive, with a good gene pool of trophy blacktail deer, wild bronze turkey, and a good number of quail. Bears and pigs are also present at various times. " T HAT LUCKY OLD SUN" Back slightly more than a half century ago, recording artist Frankie Laine released a monster hit entitled: “That Lucky Old Sun.” The main theme of the song being that the center of our physical universe had a totally soft life “with nothing to do but roam around Heaven all day.”

Earth to the Sun: You have a new assignment. It is to provide massive amounts of solar heat to the United States of America and the rest of the so-called Developed World. This virtually untapped, potentially inexhaustible source of renewable energy of non-fossil fuel has zoomed into prominence in 2011 along with wind turbine construction. In both cases, there seems to be a touch of “wishful thinking” bordering upon desperation as everyone seeks to avoid killer fossil fuel bills. In general, average American homeowners do not want to confront themselves with the hard truths about the complete dominance of fossil fuel usage in this country for most energy needs. The U.S. Department of Energy now tells us that approximately 39% of our power usage comes from oil; 23% from natural gas; 24% from coal; 6% from hydropower dams; 7% from nuclear sources and only 1% from renewable energy sources such as solar energy and wind turbines. As to domestic energy production, coal accounts for 51% of the total; nuclear power accounts for 20%; natural gas accounts for 18% and petroleum accounts for 2%. This leaves all renewable fuels accounting for 9%, of which the vast majority is water for

hydropower. In this category, solar energy and wind turbines account for only about 0.18%. In 2010, solar energy sales exceeded 60 billion dollars worldwide, a staggering sum. The nations leading in this competition were China, Taiwan, and many of the larger European Economic Community countries. The United States was far behind both in production and usage of solar power. Traditionally, solar radiation has been used for heating residences and water supplies utilized by individuals, as well as for driving electrical generators by steam power. An alternate utilization is by constructing photovoltaic devices (aka: solar cells) for small manufacturing devices and on rooftops accessible to abundant sunshine for selected residential uses. Solar cells today provide perhaps 20% of its potential for electricity usage. Prospects for additional innovative usages are exceptional. As the solar manufacturing industry matured, it became clear that economies of scales were hugely important. The larger and more fully integrated was the operation, whether driven in a horizontal or vertical manner, the more likelihood for measurably high success. The smaller the operation, fiscally speaking, the more likely production costs would exceed consumer demand. In such Volume 2 ✫ Number 3
