THE ART HUB
Academic Work
Typology: Cultural
Location: Beirut, Lebanon
Year 2015
Decaying and derelict buildings are scattered around Beirut city. These spaces are being abandoned, neglected and threatened to be demolished. Where greed, money and the absence of the governments push developers to replace these buildings with towers, and by destroying these old buildings Beirut’s memory and culture heritage is being destroyed with them.
Beirut is being emptied out of nearly everything, and one of the things where I think Beirut’s potential lies is in its neighborhoods. ... I think this is the main lack that I will try to fill by actually inhabiting these spaces, which are standing empty, not with economy-driven residential towers with gated communities and ground-floor parking and all of that But through ART.
A very beautiful structure built in 1920 and extended in 1950 and 1980 with a traditional architecture, Arches, High Ceiling Rooms, Sand Stone, red tiles Roof, abandoned during the civil war. It was mentioned by the Ministry of Culture as a Historical Heritage site.
The project questions the nature of these empty forgotten spaces, and how we can re-appropriate them through architecture to include them within the fabric and life of the city, once again, to come to life in the form of a new artistic space in Beirut.
The project assembles this urban spot, taking the original house as a starting point rescuing it of its deterioration by means of a change of use and extension transforming it into art hub. A Place for artists to LIVE, WORK and EXHIBIT.
