KEYNOTE SPEAKER Julie Washington, PhD, CCC-SLP, is Department Chair and Professor in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Georgia State University. Dr. Washington’s work focuses on cultural dialect use in African American children with a specific emphasis on the impact of dialect on language assessment, literacy attainment, and academic performance. She is an affiliate faculty of the Research on the Challenges of Acquiring Language and Literacy Initiative and the Urban Child Study Center at Georgia State. Dr. Washington is currently a principal investigator on the Georgia Language Disabilities Research Innovation Hub. Her research aims to improve early identification of reading disabilities in elementary school aged African American children, and includes a focus on children, their families, teachers, and communities. She received the 2017 Outstanding Urban Education Research Award from Georgia State University and in 2019, Dr. Washington and her colleagues were awarded the ASHA Editor’s Award for their work in Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools.
STUDENT ADDRESS In her time at the institute, Jocelyn completed a thesis with Dr. Arbel in the Cognitive Neuroscience Group, and she participated in two international learning experiences. Among her extracurricular activities, she served as Treasurer of NSSLHA and helped to facilitate the IMPACT course as well as the Power, Privilege, and Positionality orientation events for incoming cohorts of students.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM STUDENT AWARDS Julie Atwood Award for Excellence Elise Hopkins Gallegos This award was established in 1997 in honor of Julie Atwood, former Director of the Speech-Language Pathology Department at Massachusetts General Hospital and Professor at the Institute since its inception. The award is given to a graduating student who possesses a strong base of academic knowledge, applies theory to the delivery of clinical service in an exemplary manner, and demonstrates the highest values and ethics, the ability to apply research findings to clinical practice, and the potential for professional excellence and leadership.
Kenneth N. Stevens Award for Research Stephanie Louise Gaglini This award honors a graduating student who has demonstrated superior performance in conducting research that produces new knowledge about normal or disordered communication.
Pamela E. Hook Award for Literacy Courtney Abigail Perrigo This award honors a graduating Certificate of Advanced Study in Literacy student or a Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology student who has shown dedication, curiosity, and exceptional performance working with individuals who have disorders of written language.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM FACULTY AWARDS Faculty Award for Excellence This award honors one current on-site or adjunct faculty member or term lecturer who excels at presenting material in a highly effective manner, fosters an atmosphere of individual inquiry, welcomes discussion and diverse points of view, and inspires students to apply and further their knowledge beyond the classroom, SLLC and external placement experiences.
Sofia Vallila Rohter, PhD, CCC-SLP Associate Professor, Co-Director of the Cognitive Neuroscience Group Award for Excellence in Clinical Supervision This award honors an external clinical supervisor(s) who have contributed significantly to the graduate student clinical experience by serving as an excellent role model, collaborating with other professionals at the external practicum site, providing opportunities to students that help to shape their ability to become critical thinkers and lifelong learners, and demonstrating evidenced-based practice principles in their practice.
