DOCTOR OF NURSING PRACTICE AWARDS The Herzlinger Prize for DNP Project

Tanya M. Martel The Herzlinger Prize, awarded in memory of Rebecca Colvin, is awarded annually to a DNP student in the School of Nursing for the development of an exceptional DNP Project. The Project selected for this prize best exemplifies creativity and originality. Exceptional writing and scholarly integration of theory and research as well as application to advanced practice nursing will be recognized with this award Dr. Martel, also a certified wound/ostomy care nurse (WOCN) is currently the Nursing Program Director for the Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Program at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. Her DNP project focused on the increased incidence of device related pressure injuries in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) around endotracheal tube placements. With the increase in hospital census, particularly with COVID related illness, in April-May of 2020 there was a 275% increase in hospital acquired pressure injuries (HAPI) over the prior two-month period. Dr. Martel designed and implemented a best practice care model using Kotter’s 8-step change theory, that improved the process of assessment and management of patients with endotracheal tubes. One month following these process changes there were no documented device related pressure injuries in the MICU. She has already published the preliminary work that prompted this study.
