2014 MGS Primary History Conference 10.30am-3.30pm, 9 October 2014 After the success of the first ever MGS Primary History Conference in October 2013, we have decided to provide an even greater range of workshops for the 2014 Conference, and provide greater opportunities to meet other teachers and informally share experiences and good practice. Once again, there will be no charge for delegates attending the conference, with a light lunch and refreshments being provided during the day. The confirmed line-up includes: Keynote 1: Dr Michael Maddison (National Lead Inspector for History, Ofsted) The first fifty days of the new National Curriculum in history: how well are we doing? Keynote 2: Jerome Freeman (Chair, Historical Association Primary Committee) From Julius Caesar to the Twentieth Century: 2000 years in overview and depth. Creative ways to make the most of the new primary history curriculum. Workshops delivered by primary history teachers, university tutors, Manchester Art Gallery, Manchester Museum, and English Heritage on the following topics: •

St Richard's Belle Vue Heritage Project - fulfilling the local history aspect of the new curriculum through engaging cross-curricular activities and by utilising local contacts.

Imagining the Past - using art to encourage enquiry, understanding and empathy about changes in society under the rule of Queen Victoria.

Using iPads and iMovie to deliver effective history lessons

How to conduct Local History Studies, including case studies and resources. Learning through objects - Investigating and interpreting objects from Ancient Egypt. 'Only connect!' An exploration of possible approaches to making history meaningful to children. Integrating ICT into the primary history curriculum

Objects through time: How can different objects help teach History from the Stone Age to beyond 1066

In addition, there will be a brief presentation by Zoe Hodgkinson, Editor BBC Learning, about the many resources which BBC Learning provides for teachers of history in primary schools. During the course of lunch, it will also be possible to discuss opportunities for professional practice research with staff from Manchester Metropolitan University.
