Welcome to the first ever A celebration of what Epsom & Ewell has to offer creatively is long overdue. And what a way to do it; three days jam-packed with incredible arts events, exhibitions, activities and performances. Since the idea of a festival was first discussed just over a year ago, so many local artists, performers, creative professionals and volunteers have come forward to make this exciting and unique event a success - hence the theme of the festival: Our Town. The name MGSO4 has been inspired by the chemical formula for Epsom Salts, (magnesium sulphate) that made the town famous years ago. As a brand new charity, MGSO4 is committed to promoting the arts in Epsom & Ewell – music, theatre, literature, dance and visual arts – and developing opportunities for the whole community to participate and enjoy being creative. You’ll find dozens of fantastic events listed in this programme. There is something for everyone. The Festival would not be possible without the efforts of our passionate and committed trustees and organising committee, who have been working tirelessly for nearly a year to make it happen; the many local businesses and individuals who have supported us, and the willingness of local people to volunteer their time. We hope you enjoy the festival. Sarah Dewing, Festival Director Thank you to all those who have sponsored us, made a donation or offered their venue or services. They include: The Ebbisham Centre

Transforming audiences to build communities MGSO4 promotes participation and we want everyone to be included. Here, the chief executive of The Sunnybank Trust explains why the arts festival is so important to local community groups. “In our community there are many people on the edge and isolated simply for not managing to fit in or fully understand our society. Through the arts we can challenge and advocate for them – together we can open society’s eyes to a very different world of people. The Sunnybank drama group is known as ‘The Happy Kings and Queens’. They chose this name because they felt happy and special just like royalty. As a group, they have explored important things such as emotions, how standing in a certain way can make you feel stronger and how

everyone is equal and important. The group chose The Wizard of Oz as their MGSO4 Festival production. It is a story based on friendship, personal journey and triumph despite all the odds. The word drama is taken from the Greek meaning to take action. Through our production, we seek to build better communities and improve lives.” Dorothy Watson Chief Executive, The Sunnybank Trust The Wizard of Oz multi-sensory performance will take place at St. Barnabas Church, Epsom, Friday 24th June 2016, 8pm. Please call 01372 749871 for tickets and further details.

Inspired by ‘Our Town’ MGSO4 aims to bring the community together through the arts. Two of our children’s projects are doing just that, with creative responses captured in both words and pictures: Giant Borough Jigsaw Map Primary schools throughout Epsom & Ewell have each decorated a piece of a huge wooden jigsaw, made and designed by local artist Ruth Shepherd. When fitted together they form the shape of the borough map. The results are fantastic and the completed jigsaw will be revealed at the festival, as a long-term exhibit in Epsom Library, The Ebbisham Centre. Generously sponsored by Epsom Decorative & Fine Arts Society and Great Art. Our Town Poetry Competition Budding poets have responded to a call for entries to MGSO4 Festival’s Children’s and Young People’s Poetry Competition. The winning poems will be performed at a special

MGSO4: Alive with the Sound of Music The festival’s Young Musician of the Year Competition shines a light on the young people in Epsom & Ewell who are our future artists. Musicians aged 18 and under will be shortlisted in both classical and contemporary categories, and the talent of the winners will be clear to see, as they perform live on stage in Derby Square on Sunday 26th June. The competition has been generously sponsored by the UK’s biggest guitar store Guitar Guitar. A Festival Song Built to Last We have been lucky to have a brand new song written to celebrate the launch of MGSO4, by local songwriter and musician Ben Tompsett. Schools and children’s choirs across the borough have been learning the uplifting, pop ballad Built To Last, sung by 12-year old Beth Keens, from Epsom Downs.

Anyone who wants to learn or enjoy the song, can find the music, lyrics, and a piano score on the website www.mgso4festival.org/song Built To Last will have its debut public performance live on stage in Derby Square, Epsom on Saturday 25th June 11.30am
