A Festival of Discovery One hot, dry, summer’s day 400 years ago, a farmer called Henry Wicker was the first person to taste magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) in the mineral water bubbling up from his field. It took a few years for word to spread about these so-named Epsom Salts, but the spread it did and Epsom became England’s first spa town. Celebrities of the day, including Samuel Pepys and Nell Gwynn, came to drink and bathe in the famous mineral waters. It became known as a cure-all and attracted medics, entrepreneurs and entertainers to Epsom. And 400 years on, Epsom Salts is still the beauty secret of pop stars, fashionistas and Oscar winners. A quick search on the internet reveals claims that it can relieve stress, boost tomato growth and even save lives. So in celebration of this anniversary of the world-renowned product that has endured so many generations, the theme of the 2018 MGSO4 Epsom & Ewell Arts Festival is DISCOVERY. As a charity, we believe that providing enriching creative opportunities makes us all feel a little happier in life, and so we have commissioned new music, art and theatre for everyone to enjoy, and arranged a host of exciting activities and performances. Take a few hours out of your routine, in this festival week, to experience something new from talented writers, artists, actors, dancers and musicians. Don’t miss the premiere performance of Greg Harradine’s new music composition (p19); watch the first-ever street performance of the seventeenth century play Epsom Wells (p21); and many fantastic other events. In schools, children get ever-fewer opportunities to draw, dance or make music, so do encourage the young people you know to make the most of what the festival has to offer too. Now that you have a copy of the festival programme, sit down, have a good look through, and choose something that takes your fancy. As Daniel Defoe (author of Robinson Crusoe) wrote in 1725, “this town is wholly adapted to pleasure…folks don’t come to Epsom to stay within doors.” Maria Reeves Festival Director Thank yous Putting on a week-long festival of such high quality is a huge task, and involves the combined efforts of many people. Thanks to the charity trustees: Kobbie Boafo, Mark Jarman, Eleanor McBrien, Patricia Pellizza, Aly Smith and Ali Waters. Thanks to numerous people who have helped to organise events or donated their professional services: Ben Tompsett, Richard Excell, Tamaryn Pitout, Russell Dawson, Carol Caiger, Audrey Ardern Jones, Jeremy Harte, David Brooks and Anne-Marie Goodwill, and others. Thanks to everyone else who has also volunteered their time, and to all of our generous sponsors and donors, listed on the next page.

Meet MGSO4 Festival’s Young Designers 2018
The eye-catching design featured on the cover of the programme and across all 2018 festival promotions, is the winning entry in our design competition in collaboration with Epsom’s University for the Creative Arts (UCA). The design was created by Nina Elstad, 22-year old student, who is just completing her first year in graphic design at UCA. She said: “For this design I wanted to incorporate elements related to the discovery theme, as well as sticking with the spirit of the festival. The floating island is supposed to resemble an Epsom Salt crystal with the festival on top, and the small astronaut is a symbol of discovery.” Nina, who is originally from Norway, previously also studied fine art, but hopes in the future to start her own business in illustration. “I’m very interested in branding and marketing,” she added, “and I feel like winning this competition is a step in the right direction.” Runners up were Bill Hards and Will Green.
Art and design students at NESCOT have also been working on festival posters for music, theatre and art events being held in the college. Designs from three short-listed students will be included in festival promotions. They are: Gererd Murphy, Pavlina Azova and Ashley Das. All of the young designers from both UCA and NESCOT will receive prize vouchers from online art materials retailer GreatArt, who said: “GreatArt are passionate about supporting art within local communities, celebrating the importance of creativity and championing opportunities for artists of all ages. We’re very pleased to be able to lend our support to the festival for a second year.”

EPSOM
The Lost Words of Epsom
Our creative competition for children and young people, was inspired by beautiful book The Lost Words by Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris, which pairs illustrations of nature words that have been removed from the Oxford Junior Dictionary, with short spell-style acrostic poems about them. But in Epsom & Ewell, we have lost some of our own words too. Bourne Hall Museum curator Jeremy Harte looked back into history, and uncovered eight ‘lost words’ from the seventeenth century, used at the height of Epsom’s popularity as a spa town. They describe the creatures and activities of Epsom Common where the original well was sited. • Beeskep, a hive or home for bees made from straw rope twisted and coiled into a dome. • Flittermouse, the Surrey dialect word for a bat. • Furzechat/Fuzzchat, a small heathland bird; also the local nickname for someone living on Epsom Common (Stamford Green). • Haycock, a small pile of hay raised after mowing to dry out before stacking. • Hedgepig, the Surrey dialect word for a hedgehog. • Kissing-gate, a swing-gate moving between the two arms of a curved fence. • Riphook, a tool with curved blade for cutting grass and sedge, similar to a sickle. • Plashing, the weaving of slashed tree branches between upright branches to create a hedge. Children can submit an illustration, poem or both, with winning entries published in a special book. The competition is being sponsored by Epsom Civic Society and The Arts Society Epsom. Closing date for entries is 4 June 2018. Visit the MGSO4 website for more information. Poems and illustrations of winners and selected entries will be exhibited at the festival. Epsom Civic Society is pleased to be sponsoring ‘The Lost Words’ competition and Epsom & Ewell Arts Festival project.
shaping the future, safeguarding the past
The Society is keen to see young people draw inspiration from the Borough’s rich heritage and rural history. Epsom Civic Society is for all who care about their Joi surroundings and wish to change them for the better Epso n the whilst protecting the heritage. The Society was founded mC Soci ivic in 1959, at a time when many historic and architecturally ety valuable buildings and houses in Epsom and Ewell were being threatened by developers. Its primary role was to halt the destruction of Epsom’s heritage and to ensure that new development was compatible with the traditional character of the town. Today our purpose is wider: we continue to work to protect the heritage of Epsom and to encourage high standards of new planning and building but we also aim to promote a sense of civic pride, help to safeguard the character of Epsom and its Conservation Areas and inspire progressive improvement in the quality of urban life for everyone. We want to make Epsom a better place to live and we need your help and support in this task. By becoming a member you will not only add weight to representations on local issues but also help to identify ways of improving the town. Epsom Wells By Matrix Theatre
Presenting the first-ever outdoor street performance of sketches from the famous seventeenth century play, Epsom Wells, directed by Sally McCormack.
At the height of its fame as a rural spa town, Epsom drew a party-loving crowd of celebrities from all over Europe. Inspired by these antics, Thomas Shadwell, a popular playwright of the day, wrote the play Epsom Wells. It was first performed in London in 1672 in the presence of King Charles II, who enjoyed it so much that he saw it again two days later. It is a bawdy comedy, whose characters are more interested in wine, ale and amorous adventures on and off the bowling green than in drinking Epsom’s mineral waters. The Justice, Clodpate, is made a fool of and tricked into a marriage with the seventeenthcentury version of a gold-digger. “Is it not better to let life go out in a blaze than a snuff?” “The freedom of Epsom allows almost nothing to be scandalous.” Plus family games and stalls. Come along with family or friends and enjoy the atmosphere. Dressing-up in seventeenth century wigs and costumes is encouraged. Epsom Square, KT19 8AG, 11am - 3pm FREE

Celebration Quarter Peal
From 4pm, listen out for the sound of a traditional ‘quarter peal’ being rung from the bells of Christ Church Epsom Common. The quarter peal is a performance of 45-50 minutes, to a specific composition, and with the same person ringing each bell throughout. The sound of bells may travel for several miles, so listen out wherever you are. Christ Church, Epsom Common, from 4pm FREE

The Horton Chapel Project: creating a new destination for the arts in Epsom Tucked away at the centre of Livingstone Park sits Epsom’s best-kept secret. Built in 1901, Horton Chapel was a central part of the cluster of psychiatric hospitals that transformed the town at the start of the twentieth century. It is a stunning building, inside and out. Yet this Grade II listed masterpiece has stood empty and unused since the mid 1990s. Now, a group of local residents is determined to bring it back to life, with a plan to restore and re-open the chapel as a vibrant arts and cultural centre. Planning permission has been granted to convert the building so that it can host performances, exhibitions and all sorts of creative learning opportunities. There will be space for community groups to hire, as well as a welcoming cafÊ-bar. A permanent exhibition will share the fascinating and at times controversial history of this important building and of the hospitals and people it served. The Horton Chapel Project team of volunteers has already won development funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), The Architectural Heritage Fund and the Power to Change programme. A successful bid for further funding from the HLF will be matched by ring-fenced funds that have been held by the council for many years. The group is hoping to be given the green light over the summer but there is still more work to do, and more funding will be needed to ensure this amazing building becomes a hub at the heart of the community. Find out how you can be part of this exciting project.
